Hi Pete! I've been a pro photographer/videographer and Photography professor in Sac area for 40 years and I'd just like to say that your editing is great. Slo mo, different cuts, B-roll, wide, medium and close shots, smooth transitions and more. Makes it very pleasant to watch. I'm a fly fisher as well (mostly small water in the high Sierrs) and have been considering catch and release for trout in the American but now you've inspired me to give it a try.
Hey ...how was the fishing when you were a kid...I was in two rivers as a kid...one in So.Cal ( San Gabriel) and I'd spend my summers on the Feather...Green Bridge by the Hatchery...The Steelhead were 3 feet long in the 70s!
@@PalmCirclePete PC Pete... Been watching a couple of your steelie vids. You do really well... Back in the day, we used to fish for shad at Sailor Bar from the north side. Can you still enter from the north side at a little park?
Love your channel man, I found it yesterday when I was looking for ppl who've fished out of an Intex kayak, and saw your King salmon catch which was dope. The editing and music effort you put into your videos is insane man keep it up
Thank you! Not too much camping along the American River in the Metro area...But if you follow it up into the sierras Emigrant Gap is a great spot. You can also check out the North fork of the North Fork of the American, apparently that is great.
Can you catch trout with spinners or bait on the American River? Any advice as to tackle or location as I'd like to take my 12 year old niece out there to try (she lives near Folsom). Thanks!
Yes definitely man. My buddy and I when out on a boat for steelhead or salmon throw little spinners and hook up a lot on trout. My favorite trout lure for the American fishing from shore is a plain silver spoon. Hit up Fishermen’s where house on Folsom!
To stay out of trouble when fishing the American, check the regulations first. The lower American is an anadromous fishery. You need a Steelhead report card to fish it legally now. Cal DFW has the info on their website. I fished it when I lived there from' 62 to '90. Good luck!
Love the content man! As a fellow fly fisherman I love seeing quality videos of fishing posted on popular platforms like this. I noticed you didn’t wet your hands for a number of the fish you caught. It’d be awesome to see you wet your hands before handling these fish. Reason being: Trout are considered very sensitive fish and handling them with dry hands takes off the coat of slime around them. Ultimately it increases their chances dying to skin infections and vulnerable to abrasion. I’m sure you care about the trout population as much as any other fisherman, so make sure to dip your whole hand into the water if you plan to handle a trout. With so many people watching, they’re going to mirror you, so emphasizing this would also be really good as well (ie. commenting on this practice while doing so to spread awareness). Great video man! Keep posting!
Pete! Just moved to the sacramento area ( Watt Avenue River Access is pretty much my backyard). Love fly fishing even though im relatively new. Where should I go for some good access? Youre the man!
Nice! You’re in a great spot, a lot of this video was filmed right in this area. Trout in the American are picky and technical, but if you put in the time and research you should get lucky.
Not my favorite to be honest. The material gets flies stuck in it a lot, the measuring tape is a cool feature, but honestly I’ve never lined up a trout to see how long it was in the net anyway.
Try Bass Pro Shop. They have free fishing lessons that you should be able to sign up for online. Not sure they are scheduling classes during covid. Good luck!
Andrew Vang there isn’t a size regulation on these trout, but you have to make sure they’re hatchery! Can’t keep any wild trout/steelhead in the American. You can identify them as hatchery fish by their cut adipose fin, sometimes it has healed over with a scar. I try to not keep fish this small though. If I’m going to harvest a fish, I shoot for 12+ inches for trout, that’s a regulation in other places.
Ronald McDonald I’m not sure to be honest. I’ve heard both, and I bet there’s a good case for each, but I’m not experienced enough to identify the difference at this point 🤷♂️ I’ve heard veterans who fish the American say that at all trout in the American are steelhead. Obviously that’s an exaggeration, I’ll do some research!
Someone at nimbus showed me a picture of a fish that he caught by the wall. It was the size of an average steelhead but with large spots and slightly brownish color, I think he caught a sea run brown
@@Sam-zv9fi I know what a chinook salmon looks like it wasn't a salmon it looked like a large trout but not as silvery as a steelhead the spots were large and well spaced. There has also been a few chum salmon caught there and one time a sockeye salmon was reported in the American so it's amazing where fish can end up sometimes
I read about this, supposedly at some hatchery in the folsom area there were some huge brown trout that they had when they closed it down or moved operation or something. They ended up releasing the browns into the american supposedly, i saw a picture of someone catching a brown on the american, and the yuba as well, the leading theory on the kienes fly fishing forums for these fish was either one of those fish from that hatchery, or these happen to be big browns that survive getting swept over the dam at folsom lake. You are not crazy for thinking it was a brown on the american river, i assure you, ive seen pictures of them caught in the sac river watersheds

No problem, thanks for watching!
Sweet action on a fly rod in my backyard. 👍🙏🎣⚒
thanks man! this was actually my backyard for two years too. Lived right there in the River Blu apartments
This video is very entertaining . thank you
I think your video is better than fisherman's life cuz you share your viewers location for fishing 👍👌
Wow, thanks
Natural fishing is so beautiful thank you for sharing
East side of the Watt Avenue Bridge, I spend my childhood in that river and grew up about a mile or two from there.

Great video! Decided to pick up fly fishing and live pretty close to American River. Glad to see there's trout to be caught this time of year.
jjcj123 thanks! Yes sir, there are a lot of trout in there, let me know how it goes for you!
Amazing... 👍👍👍 Suksesss...
😎😎😎😎
how many are you allowed to bag per day? are you allowed to keep wild or only hatchery trout?
Do not keep wild fish!
2 hatchery steelhead or trout a day.
If you don't me me asking, is this right under the Watt bridge?
Yes 😎. Thanks for watching
Nice video, Pete. You inspired me. Any idea if there's a place to camp free and fish up that way?

What part of the American?
Why do fly poles work so well for fly fishing? What about them makes it work?
Where were you in this video in sacramento? Nearest access point?
Use google maps to look at the river and pick out some good looking riffles. Check out along some of the roads/bridges that cross the river.
Great video. Someone in nor cal. Thank you!
Thanks, glad you liked it!
They got to be stocked rainbows right?
I think they were all hatchery steelhead
Was that a lamprey eel you recorded?
I think so!
@2:25 what bridge is that?
Are the rainbows still there, and will they bite spinners or drift fishing worms/powerbait? If so, any spots you would recommend?
Was just at this spot fly fishing. Just caught a few pike minnows only. Lol
I went out a week ago and didn't hook up :(
I've caught them there with spinners this time of year, so you should have luck! lmk how you do
Hey man how long will these be in the river ??? Can I catch the trout year round ???
Trash can collector joe Leaves pretty much dude!
Palm Circle Pete great to hear man!
@@PalmCirclePete Heyo
These fish still there? Is the “spring half pound steelhead” run I’ve read about?
Yes sir, these trout are pretty much in here year round
Palm Circle Pete right on!, tried the spot just below this under the bridge and got 3 swinging the Caddis pupa
Fishing & Beyond nice man! I’ll be out there soon again :)
Hi pete im new to fly fishing and i have had trouble looking for places to fish in the American river any help?
A good spot to start out is around the riffles by the watt or fair oaks overpass
Awesome day of fishing. What are the regulations for this section of the American? Is it barbless flies only?
jason thanks! no not on this section. You can check it out online though, there’s is a barbless section only west of the hatchery.

Hey man, I don't want to give the exact location but this is between Watt and River Bend Park!
just upstream of watt ave bridge, maybe 75 meters
