Oliver is also the sense of reason here. He also has courage to subtly point out how Dark Night is the “busy” movie. Kinda like Batman Forever but with Heath Ledger blowing shit up, and slashing people’s throats. For a generation of dimwits Heath became the benchmark for artistic greatness.
When I was a young boy I watched “Batman Begins” without first asking for permission from my parents. I was profoundly affected by the dark & gritty nature of the Heroism in the film. I have only grown more attracted to “Batman Begins” over the years. It is such a good film. “It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.” Is a Heroic Philosophy that will forever linger on in my mind.

I love THE DARK KNIGHT as much as the next person, however it kind of bugs me how, ever since that film came out, everyone seems to forget this one exists.
2005, I can't believe this movie is that old, feels like it came out yesterday, excellent review Oliver, reminded me how awesome this film was, it got me back into comics. I need to find my copy and watch it again.
I love this movie; I go back and forth on whether I prefer this over Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. They're both high caliber Batman adaptations to me. Also, this exchange between Gordon and Batman is very reflective of what this film did for Batman on the big screen. "I never said thank you." "Now you'll never have to."
13:13 Dawson's Creek And Teaching Mrs. Tingle’s Fan I recognize Her She’s played Josephine "Joey" Lynn Potter From Dawson’s Creek And as the Hero Leigh Ann Watson From Teaching Mrs. Tingle
Damn Oliver, your "trailers" before and after the retrospective keep getting better and better; this post-retrospective "trailer" (40:55 - end) kept juggling two narratives and it turned out great. Impressive stuff!
It took awhile to figure out how I was gonna do the end montage but after a few failed edits i got it how i wanted it, i love the dump of exposition that shane rimmer gives at the end, its proper trailer fodder dialogue and had to be used.
Love that the retrospectives seem to be getting longer. Despite what they teach you in marketing classes, the 'under 40 minutes' rule is such nonsense.
I think they're both equally attractive, but I do feel that Katie does an equally good job as Rachel as Maggie does. It's popular to bash on Katie nowadays because of the whole Dawson's Creek thing and the Scientology crap, but I honestly think she's a good actress and she really holds her own in Batman Begins, especially considering the talent she's surrounded by.
I felt Maggie offered no improvement over Katie. Yes, people like to make fun of Katie Holmes' performance for a variety of (undeserved) reasons, but it's not like Maggie provided a powerful performance herself. My only issue with Katie Holmes is that she has a very young-sounding voice, so it doesn't so intimidating enough for a no-nonsense ADA who's unafraid of standing up to corruption and the threats that go along with it, but at least she's easier on the eyes. In short, any problem you could say about Katie Holmes' performance could be said about Maggie G's.
What the hell do you smoke and where can I get some? Gotta be a hell of a drug to tell me this movie was the best of a trilogy that contains THE DARK FUCKING KNIGHT!!!
@@GopherChomper I know that on a technical level The Dark Knight is better but Batman Begins is my personal favorite in the trilogy. I really like the characterization of Bruce and Batman. (And maybe there's a little bit of bias because Scarecrow is my favorite Batman villain and I really liked Scarecrow in Begins, despite him having very little screen time)
The track playing around the 22:30 mark is the Batman theme.....and you can DEFINITELY hum along to it.....I love the soundtrack.....actually the whole trilogy’s soundtrack......they are definitely some of my favorite OST’s
I love how well you write these retrospective reviews, Oliver. Your voice goes down and the points are emphasized extremely well, the explanations flow and keep my interest. Good work, as always!
Great review. This was my favorite of all the trilogy films because of how much of the focus is on Batman and elements that reminded me of the earlier seasons of the 90s animated series.
The german dub really enhances all the voice acting performances. Especially David Nathan as the dubbing voice for Christian Bale does a terrific job. His Batman voice is legendary and much better than the original.
Yes it's Here great Job Oliver happy you did this movie for 2017, great Job as always for the first Batman movie i saw in theaters that made really love Batman as an Character. Thanks have nice weekend and looking forward to your commentary podcasts and reviews in your channel in nearest future bye now.
I remember seeing Batman Begins at the movie theater. Once I walked away from it and was in the car with my girlfriend, I was just quiet. I just count believe what I saw. It was the best Batman movie ever done at that time. It is incredibly epic, smart, realistic, it was just so incredible that they just took the story so serious, it was amazing.
Just found your channel, Oliver, and I'm loving your vids. One of the reasons I've always preferred Begins to Dark Knight and Rises, is that Gotham looks so dirty and seedy like it's portrayed in the comics. In the sequels, Gotham just looks too clean
There are two points here you ABSOLUTELY nailed on the head. One, you got the editing on the fight scenes spot-on. Batman's initial appearance indeed was correctly shown all choppy, where you don't see what he's doing: he's just this force. But as the film goes on, and he's facing the League of Shadows, and of course Ra's himself, the editing was far too close and quick. Impossible to know what the smeg was going on. Secondly, the film has just the right amount of stuff going on without being cluttered, as you said. Sometimes I like when a sequel has more plots and twists 'n' turns than the original (Shrek 2, for example), but The Dark Knight, for me, felt more like a miniseries. Honestly, when the Joker escapes GCPD and we see him with his head out the cop car, I thought that was the bloody ending. "Begins" is my favourite Batman film. The other films either too murdery (by that, I mean Batman kills - well, he does in this too, but not blatantly), not about Batman at all, or just too silly. As compared specifically to the other instalments in the DK Trilogy, I find "The Dark Knight" far too pretentious and up its own arse, with a dreadful ending, while "Rises" suffered from starting with mistakes made in the previous two. Anne Hathaway was arguably the sexiest-ever Catwoman though. And don't even get me started on Batfleck...
You're my favorite movie reviewer. Not only for the movies you choose, but it doesn't matter how they were received by audiences, you give it such a passion that proves how much of a film fanatic you are. Your editing is really great, your custom trailers are marvelous to watch and you've got a bit of everything for many film fans. I feel like I don't even need to buy the movies to hear the commentaries or watch behind the scenes, instead I can just be intrigued by what you have to say and how well executed everything is. Keep up the good work, man.
The music in this one is especially good and it feels deeper than the others. Really epic in places and Falcone is maybe the best mobster villain performance of the series. Liam Neeson crowns it and the Dr Crane drug scenes were a clever way to insert comic book horror scenes. The “evil Batman” is absolutely terrifying.
I loved the tie-in video game for this movie, it stands out as one of the best movie-to-video-game adaptation, even if as you say, the story veers off in slightly different directions. Whether it's a coincidence or not, I like how the fer factor in this game was a precursor to its larger presence in the Arkham games. Oh and by the way, top work Ollie, as always mate :)
100% agree, Batman Begins is my favourite Batman movie for the same reasons. I know Oliver is a fan of The Shadow, so I think he'd agree with me that Bruce's training with Ducard scenes should have formed the backstory for how Lamont Cranston's time in Tibet prepared him to be The Shadow.
Finally someone else who loves Batman Begins as much as I do. It gets overshadowed a lot by the Dark Knight, but I love it more. My personal favorite is Mask of the Phantasm, but this is a very close second.
I respectfully disagree with you in regard to the soundtrack you can't compare any soundtrack to this par inception to this one, hans zimmer did an awesome and is one of my favourite soundtracks
Same here. Great review of my 2nd favorite film of all time, but I disagree with you about the score. It's iconic and is better than all those that copied it. Also, the Elfman score just sounds like Beetlejuice to me.
The "problem" with Hans Zimmer regarding a good score is, that he's not a composer, but a damn good programmer of sequencers. The lack of composing skills shows a lot, imo. His music is very trivial. I love simplicity, but I'm not a fan of triviality.
Saw this in theater. Was an awesome time. At the time, I hadn't read comics in years and had actually forgotten that Professor Crane was the Scarecrow. So when he popped up as the Scarecrow for the first time it took me by surprise in a good way. He was always one of my favorite Batman villains so to actually see him onscreen (and be surprised by it thanks to my forgetting his alter-ego) was fantastic. I had to bite the side of my cheek to not shout *"Fuck YES!"* and disturb the other movie goers. And then he was handled the way he was in the other 2 flicks...
This video popped up on my feed earlier today and all I've done all day is binge watch/listen to your reviews. You're a class act and I cannot fathom why you've not got 10 times the subscribers you have. Keep it up Oliver! :D
Batman Begins is the best Batman film to me because it deeply explored the character of Bruce Wayne and not just Batman. No other live action Batman film to date has explored Bruce Wayne as well as BB. The animated films/TV shows have always done a great job of this and to see it done on film was refreshing to see for a change. When i first saw the trailers for BB, It totally turned me off because it looked bizarre for a Batman film. I was so used to seeing the campy cartoonish Batman that I didn't even recognize this as a Batman film from the trailers. I was hesitant to see BB when it came out but I'm glad I did because it was great film.
Great retrospective Oliver,I personally find this film to be streets ahead of Rises and is my favourite of the trilogy.Dark Knight is great but as you said the ending drags on.
Just realized the Fugitive Doctor is in this movie (at 12:51). That is Jo Martin, whose surprise revelation as a forgotten past incarnation of the Doctor in the BBC program _Doctor Who_ caused such a stir.
Only a casual Batman fan, and yet this is my favorite film of all time. I'm not arguing it's critically the BEST film ever made, but it gets so much right with regard to the craft of making film. I can't find anything that's really flawed, other than very minor nitpicks that every film has. I think maybe the martial arts choreography has its moments where it should have been done better, but I love the sword fight against Ken Watanabe and the final fight in the L-Train, which are the most important set pieces anyway.
I was totally surprised by this movie. Totally unexpected. I wasn't even expecting a Batman movie. I never even saw any marketing or trailers for this movie at the time and there was no hype, hence the $300 mil box office. I just went in expecting a Batman origin story due to the title, Batman Begins. I didn't even know the cast. I have to tell you, coming out of the theater, I was totally blown away. I had to see this movie again and again because the first time I went to see it I went in late, cause I didn't care for another Batman movie, and really regretted it. Came out of this movie telling all my friends that they need to see this movie. Totally stunning and truly rebooted the franchise.
Very nicely done Oliver, Batman Begins is my favourite Batman film too. I really like the content of this retrospective, with things I've never seen before. Great work.

I love THE DARK KNIGHT as much as the next person, however it kind of bugs me how, ever since that film came out, everyone seems to forget this one exists.
I have just recently discovered your Retrospective Reviews and I greatly enjoy them, thanks!
This is still 1 of my favorites! The hallucinations scenes are great.
2005, I can't believe this movie is that old, feels like it came out yesterday, excellent review Oliver, reminded me how awesome this film was, it got me back into comics. I need to find my copy and watch it again.
Theron Mitchell Yeah it's still a great film.
Deric James indeed
I love this movie; I go back and forth on whether I prefer this over Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. They're both high caliber Batman adaptations to me. Also, this exchange between Gordon and Batman is very reflective of what this film did for Batman on the big screen.
"I never said thank you."
"Now you'll never have to."

Dawson's Creek And Teaching Mrs. Tingle’s Fan I recognize Her She’s played Josephine "Joey" Lynn Potter From Dawson’s Creek And as the Hero Leigh Ann Watson From Teaching Mrs. Tingle
As always, great review, mate. Thorough, informative, well-structured, and entertaining.
Crazy to think there is just 8 years between Batman & Robin and Batman Begins. The cinematic change in that time is incredible.
I love your reviews mate you give such a good analytical take
Love that the retrospectives seem to be getting longer. Despite what they teach you in marketing classes, the 'under 40 minutes' rule is such nonsense.
Andrew Deen The more Oliver the better! He could make hour long reviews/retrospectives and I'd watch every second. :)
IMO, my favourite installment of the Nolan Trilogy
Same
I'll go one step further, and state that it's a FACT that you consider this to be your favourite installment.
Best of the 3 👌
Homework Radio agreed
What the hell do you smoke and where can I get some? Gotta be a hell of a drug to tell me this movie was the best of a trilogy that contains THE DARK FUCKING KNIGHT!!!
@@GopherChomper no.. The dark knight rises and batman begins are better. And I didn't smoke shit.
Begins was amazing. I was floored seeing it in 2005 before The Dark Knight came out. It put Nolan on the map for me for movies.
I love this film more than anything music, acting cinematography it's a spectacular masterpiece. I thank you Oliver for reviewing this film.
You do a marvelous job with these Oliver.
What, the Music is super easy to hum along with. One of the best film scores of this decade!
VandergriftMoefies its super easy barely a inconvenience get with the programm mate
Agreed. I don't know what this guy is talking about with the Hans and James bashing.
I absolutely love your channel. I've been down the Oliver Harper Retrospectives rabbit hole for a few days now. Keep up the great work my dude.
41:51 Perfect Batman voice right there. Why the f*ck they altered it in the sequels I'll never know
I guess he couldn't scream using this one, but you're right.
Bale kept upping the intensity of the voice as the trilogy went along, eventually turning it into a caricature
Thank you very much Stephen for your great feedback and support!
No problem, man. You just keep doing what you do and I'll be totally entertained.
Another golden retrospective, Oliver!
Your editing skills are top notch. Every time I see the behinning bits of these overviews it makes me want to watch the films on display.
I remember like it was yesterday, seeing this at midnight and not being able to contain my excitement . Great job O
Great work as per. Thanks a million, me and the lads love your vids!
Thanks Joe!
This is THE OG Hero Origin story! Amazing movie
These are the best reviews on UA-cam. Fine work.
Thanks Marcus!
Fun fact: In Hanz Zimmer's score, tracks 4 through to 9 spell out 'BATMAN' in the first letter, and are also species of Bats. Very intuitive!!
Remember going to see this 3 times in the theater back in the summer of 2005! Great Movie...
How do you not have 20 mil subs?? These are some of the best vids on UA-cam..
Finally someone else who loves Batman Begins as much as I do. It gets overshadowed a lot by the Dark Knight, but I love it more. My personal favorite is Mask of the Phantasm, but this is a very close second.
Very underrated channel and great reviews, you somehow manage to toe the line of reviewing without inflicting personal opinions
Alex Ranarivelo what’s the 1st favorite film then?
The "problem" with Hans Zimmer regarding a good score is, that he's not a composer, but a damn good programmer of sequencers. The lack of composing skills shows a lot, imo. His music is very trivial. I love simplicity, but I'm not a fan of triviality.
@@samembaye7077 Exactly! Zimmer is no composer at all!
@@M0butu Right? Very overrated guy...
I've been watching a lot of your videos, really good content
Saw this in theater. Was an awesome time. At the time, I hadn't read comics in years and had actually forgotten that Professor Crane was the Scarecrow. So when he popped up as the Scarecrow for the first time it took me by surprise in a good way. He was always one of my favorite Batman villains so to actually see him onscreen (and be surprised by it thanks to my forgetting his alter-ego) was fantastic. I had to bite the side of my cheek to not shout *"Fuck YES!"* and disturb the other movie goers.
And then he was handled the way he was in the other 2 flicks...
Oliver, you do wonderful work, but this one is one of the best of yours I've seen so far.
Looking forward to discover more
1:18 "Don't come down here with your ANGA!"
This video popped up on my feed earlier today and all I've done all day is binge watch/listen to your reviews. You're a class act and I cannot fathom why you've not got 10 times the subscribers you have. Keep it up Oliver! :D
YES! Been waiting for this review from you, Oliver! Brilliant job as always :)
Thanks Chris!
I appreciate your high-fidelity reviews. These are all fantastic.
Oliver.... I love these reviews mate. Keep up the good work
Thanks Nicholas!
Great retrospective/ review mate.
Batman Begins is the best Batman movie
I like these retrospective reviews. They are done very well. very information.
Batman v Superman ultimate xut is equal to BB in that dept imo
Great editing!!! The intro/outro segments for this one are some of the best I've seen on this channel!
"And Why Do We Fall, Bruce?"
RedSon Because gravity is a force of nature and nature is not to be trifled with
Flush Fries and any force of nature, is not to be trifled with, Master Wayne
RedSon to pick ourselves up I love this film
so we can learn to pick us ourselves up. and i love this movie i will watch your videos you rock.
DavyDevilution Chokes me up every time. 😢
I've seen this movie I don't know how many times and that intro to your retrospective made me hyped to see it again. Great work, Oliver.
Brilliant review Oliver I also liked your review of the game also I used to love playing the game a lot.
this video was excellent and very detailed i can't believe i haven't seen it sooner
Awesome retrospective for an awesome movie. Good going. I can't wait to see that Dark Knight retrospective.
Man, Oliver's trailers make these movies seem way better than they actually were.
I prefer Batman Begins as well - its sequels are excellent, with 2nd overhyped and the 3rd one a bit misunderstood.
"Barman"? I guess his alter ego would be "Booze Wayne" eh. :D
@@davidanderson_surrey_bc Oops, now I see. >)
Very nicely done Oliver, Batman Begins is my favourite Batman film too. I really like the content of this retrospective, with things I've never seen before. Great work.
