      Afro Puerto Rican ?. In the video her mom looked mixed like the typical Puerto Rican is European, Native and African mix. Some have more African, Native American or European. I can see her calling her mom Afro Puerto Rican is she was like65, 70/ 80 percent African and a dash of Euro and/ or Native. For example if Joyce was Puerto Rican she would be an Afro Puerto Rican

    • @SophieJackson1993

      Doesn’t matter what you are y’all. Be happy being yourself. No need to announce your heritage and do nothing but that. It isn’t a personality unfortunately ladies. Okay we’re mixed. Soon everyone will be mixed. It’s all good. I get that with especially food people want to talk at great length about how their parents are from a country they haven’t ever even been to. That’s fine but again it isn’t a personality. You haven’t even been to that place. You’re as much that thing as everyone else who isn’t from there. Allow things to mix together happily and we won’t have these weird problems hundreds of years into the future.

    It shouldn't be on us to shoulder the zero waste initiative. We need to be pushing it to companies to change how packaging is made and handled... Sustainably the only route is to make better more widely available biodegradeable packaging and work to enforce its use.

    • @daniv954
      @daniv954 5 років тому +121

      Well that’s the thing if more people make it their responsibility to seek out zero waste packaging then companies are forced to change. Although I do agree that large companies need to take more responsibility bc they are part of the main cause of this planet deteriorating.

    • @madiroof6894
      @madiroof6894 5 років тому +37

      totally agree, i think for this to happen though we literally need to destroy capitalism lol. it’s not profitable for companies to be sustainable, companies are literally already making money off climate change and the world burning. we need a revolution tbh

    • @arpita.patnaik
      @arpita.patnaik 5 років тому +27

      I agree but when consumer's habits change, companies automatically change their ways.

    • @soplv605
      @soplv605 5 років тому +19

      This is exactly why people in the zero-waste community try to "vote with their dollars". In many places at this point, buying zero-waste is more taxing on the environment, as well as more costly, because of the smaller sizes of the stores and the extra transport required for sometimes smaller quantities. However, the more people choose zero-waste alternatives, the more plastic-free products can be transported in bulk, reducing both the cost and environmental impact. Once bigger chains notice a loss in customers to zero-waste stores, they will have to adapt.

      Question!
      I'm puertorican as well and her way of making sofrito is different to how I was taught. I would like to know your thoughts about it?

    • @kevinsievens1129
      @kevinsievens1129 5 років тому +1

      @@GlazedBunny Sofrito is just a mixture of veggies and spices that create a delicious flavor staple for us puertorricans. As long as it has the main ingredients of sofrito, you can alter your recipe for optimum flavor. So you're recipe can be different, but that doesn't mean it's sofrito. In her recipe she used oregano and cilantro instead of culantro, but the way I was taught is using either. My recipe uses peppers, aji dulce, garlic, recao, rosemary and achiote. Maybe yours it's different. What counts here it's the flavor outcome.

    Afro Puerto Rican are people that are Puerto Rican with African features - even if they do not speak Spanish . My dad cooked so well - stewed chicken and so many delicous dishes and he was an excellent cook .He passed away and I miss it so much . I'm the youngest girl in my family and my older sis was tasked with a lot of the cooking . My sis learned so much from my dad and she is an excellent cook. He made his own Sofrito but not in the way in this vid (but of course it wasn't zero waste or even close ). He used vegetables in his garden and of course never used a recipe - he just used love and intuition 😂

    A note on avoiding stickers and packaging by going to farmers markets: Unless the fruit or vegetable is in season where you are, it IS being transported from other countries and (sadly) often people will just remove the stickers and then place the items out for sale at a higher mark-up knowing people will just assume it must have been grown locally.

    I love this video!! I'm always thinking of the ways zero waste is not always attainable in the US because of a weird lack in acknowledgment of other cultures. Like in Mexico most spices are easy to buy in bulk without excessive packaging. But here in the US other non traditional spices are only sold in packaging

    I think for a lot of people, me especially, when it comes to cooking foods that are considered "ethnic" to Americans, I'm ALWAYS worried about flavor differences between brands especially if you grew up only using certain brand(s). Like soy sauce... different brands can dramatically change the flavor profile (I'm looking at you La Choy 👀) while other brand swaps are more or less changes in saltiness (Kikkoman vs Aloha). So, I'm living for this cultural zero waste portion of the journey!!
