What I found that helps with staying on the treadmill physically is a basic breathing technique. I make sure to take a deep breath at the start, and then shallow-quick breaths in between. After I start to get a little tired, I take a deep breath again. I can't explain it perfectly but usually when you take a deep breath, you will find that sometimes- you can inhale completely- but sometimes you won't be able to. At times you fully inhale it boosts your indurance, and as you practice, it will allow you to stay at longer durations. I'm not sure if it works for everyone, but I find it really helps for longer runs.
Great tips......as we've come to expect 👏👏. I've run 20kms on the tready in a session & find it to be great brain training for observing ones thinking as we fatigue. I've also used it to progressively push myself to a 19 minute 5km @ age 64. I do much of what you advise Nate but will do more. Thanks heaps 👍
Thanks for the advice and information. I just cut 2 minutes and 12 seconds off my 5K time. I think my posture is much better, and my calves don't cramp as much on longer training runs.
Sounds very sensible - you do not need to follow exactly what is suggested but the thought behind this was great - break it up and build gradually. Thanks!!!
I'm so glad I found you guys. You're so creative and definitely help keep the running game interesting. I really wish you guys had a group in Los Angeles, but if you ever decide to expand down here I would love to volunteer for such a positive and encouraging group.
I am new to workout and gyms, when I go on the treadmill, I get bored to death, I get so bored that 15 minutes feel like 15 hours. I wonder if this is normal, or that I just have not learned to be patient. Also I get very irritated. I think I don't like not occupying my mind with something.

Tell you what Nate, I dropped in here because I'm 55, have lost 83 lbs jogging on the treadmill with outdoor walking mixed in and considering I'm still 55lbs overweight and insist on reaching my target weight of 199lbs, I'd like to suggest you might do a video that includes us big folks. I put books on tape on the laptop and listen, I have 300+ songs on my playlist, I run in the electric WRRRRRRRRR of my #2 adjustable-fans for deeper thoughts and meditative running. Some folks like the interactive laptop video of running outside for a distraction. I jog between 3mph- 4mph for up to 2 hrs on my long runs. . the speeds you mention are far out of reach as yet. I inspire myself with videos from you and other real runners and hope to slim down to the ''Clydesdale" class of distance runner plodding along on the treadmill before I do any road training in order to save my knees and lower back. Please know that you inspire me and I hope to be out there on the road someday as well. Thanks.
The thought of running 5 minutes at 8% grade makes me want to cry. :-0 Spoken like a true flatlander from NE Texas. My upcoming half marathon has a few long steady hills and I want to OWN them. I'll definitely be incorporating this workout into my repertoire of dreadmill sessions.
I used to hate the thought of using a treadmill...until i had a day that was too icy to run on the road for a long run and just went for it and completed 2.5 hours and have loved all subsequent runs on there.
Just started jogging/running recently after a 40 pound weight loss. Is a 12 minute mile alright for a beginner? And what ways should I improve my workout?
Definitely! Don't be so focused on the time - just keep moving, and moving WELL! Check out our 30 Day Challenge program, if you like. Might be just what you need: therunexperience.com/training-plans/30-day-challenge
Brandon R literally just getting more miles in that’s all man you will drastically improve by just getting more mileage in wether it in one session of per day or week.
I'm a 77 year-old runner who runs outdoors 3 days a well and 4 on the treadmill at the gym. My gym run is a "butter-burner" - one minute run, one minute walk. I progressively raise the pace until I'm at about 65% at the end of my run minute. My question is: am I doing myself any good, in the spirit of 80/20 running, with this workout since I'm not holding 60% for an extended time? Outdoors, my usual runs are between 60%-75%.
Great video.. what about do a video where you do this full workout and we can watch while we run on the treadmill? Maybe some music in the background? How many would like to see this?
Can you please write this out for us - the graphics were moving so fast I couldnt screenshot all the instructions .. once again you were brilliant to watch/listen too 🤩
You didn't do the math in your head too well - 5 mph is a 12 minute mile. Other than that, a great video. I never thought to do dynamic warm-ups on a treadmill, but it's a perfect addition.
You can certainly use a treadmill for your running for both speed and endurance work. For many it's the only option at times and you can do your workouts just as successfully on a treadmill as you can outdoors.
I have a really good quality nordic track .. but as soon as I go past about an hour and a half walking/running incline and flat the machine stops dead. I was told by a technician I’m asking way too much of this machine .. cost me thousands. Any advice or feedback? When I get on a treadmill I listen to albums etc and get completely lost in the music raking up long sessions.
I do many different types of workouts per week and I do jogging on TM 2 or 3 times a week. I am still a bit overweight. So I am trying to add the running because I know I burn more calories and it is fun to me to run. I wonder if u have any ideas how to get my knees and feet to not get sore since I do lots of other exercise through the week. I lift weights, HIIT, and aerobics, step, and bootcamp. I find the running is not as hard on my knees and feet as the other things. Can’t I do the jog and still lose weight if I do the steady state for 30 minutes? Because I do go a bit faster here and there. But for now I can only do 4.0 up to 6.0 for now but wondered if that is okay for now?
Hey there! Sounds like you're doing a great job with getting in a mix of cardio and strength and staying very active. With all of that hard work, though, you need to prioritize mobility and foam rolling, as well! Using a lacrosse ball to roll out your feet, foam rolling your quads, etc. will help with the soreness and pains. Here's a video to give you all the basics! --> ua-cam.com/video/4sRaEp6xND8/v-deo.html And yes, adding some running in (doesn't have to be long or fast) can definitely help with a weight loss goal!

One of the greatest benefits to the treadmill is that it has low impact. Consequently it gives your legs time for recovery from the road.

So do I. But I've noticed intervai work. Walk for 2 mins, run for 1 or 30 seconds. Whatever works for you.
Easy. Do a slow version of HIIT. Walk for a minute or two to rest, then run/jog.
I get tired after 2 mins im 250 pounds tho
