  • Today Luke is reviewing the NatureHike Vik 2 Tent; I DO NOT RECOMMEND this tent to anyone unless they plan to use it in a VERY DRY LOCATION....
Worst Condensation that I have EVER SEEN!

    NatureHike Vik 2 Tent -
    Agenda Free Link : www.amazon.com/Naturehike-VIK...
    Price : $189.
Colors : White - interestingly enough but for some reason on the NH web site, they call this gray.
    Versions : 3 Versions :
    A 1 person
    A 2 person
And a 1 person with a snow skit
    Includes :
    Fly
    Body
    Groundsheet
    11 stakes
    3 tie ropes
    Materials :
    Fly : 15D Nylon with 2000mm rating
Body : 20D Nylon floor with 4000mm rating.
    Mesh : b3 polyester
    150D Oxford with 3000mm rating
    Poles : 7001 Aluminum
    Stakes : 7001 Aluminum
    Zippers ?
    Weight :
    Tent and Groundsheet : 3lbs 8.0oz
    Full tent with no Groundsheet : 3lbs 1.1oz /
    Groundsheet : 7.9oz
    Measurements :
    Stored - 18” x 6” - can be smaller when compressed
Setup - Measure SIZE XXXX - consider length of tent and the walls - you will not want to touch the walls with your head or your sleeping bag or they could get wet.
Note : That is what is claimed on the NH web site but there are inconsistencies with the Amazon listing when it comes to the denier of the fly materials. Their web site says 15D and amazon says 20D. It is nylon but I don’t know which is accurate.
Also the waterproof ratings change multiple times on their web site, an example of this is the fly. It says in one place that it has a 2000mm rating, another states 4000mm.
Based on feel and my experiences, 2000mm seems more likely.
There are also varying statements concerning the pole material - in one place on the web site it states 7001 aluminum and in another 7075.
    Tent Style :
Single wall, freestanding 4 Season tent - only the doors have to be staked
    Review Pros :
Fairly lightweight for a 2 person tent
    Good materials
IMPRESSIVELY Waterproof - I am seriously impressed with this aspect but being waterproof doesn’t make a tent a good shelter.
Good amount of space for a lightweight tent.
    Easy setup
    Good form factor when stored
Good size for individuals XXXX and under. - Tall individuals may have a hard time getting into and out of the tent.
    Large enough to sit up
Can be completely freestanding if you aren’t staking out the doors.
    Review Cons :
Overall quality of the shelter is questionable. My tent features some very poor sewing and attached threads.
While this tent is waterproof, condensation is some of the worst I have ever experienced in certain situations. For an example, during a rain event, condensation will form on every inch of the inner tent fabric.
I can’t understate this, my experiences in this tent when sealed in above freezing situations is exceptionally bad - air flow is terrible with this tent & it will rain down moisture on you when rain hits the fly and in the wind.
I’ve been in situations where the moisture has soaked everything inside of the tent including me * my gear. So bad that I had to put on my rain jacket and pants.
In below freezing conditions, condensation is bad when fully sealed and will freeze to everything.
Keep in mind how condensation forms and whether this is a potential issue for you and where you can plan to camp.
Air temperature in the tent becomes warm & also humid from people, breathing & a lack of ventilation. When the warm air inside the tent hits the relatively cool fabric of the tent, moisture condenses into liquid form.
Warm and humid inside, cool weather outside and poor ventilation - you are going to be wet.
    Vents offer limited air flow
Drying this tent can take time
    Not 4 season rated
Condensation can still work even with the doors open but it will help.
Vents? Can they be opened from the inside?
    Summary :
Because condensation is so bad with this tent, my recommendation would be to use this shelter in dry climates only.
    Tips :
Make sure you have a towel with you.
Setup with wind coming through one of the doors, this is going to help you greatly with condensation.
With the Vik 1 person tent, condensation is just as bad and in some cases it will be even worse due to their being only one door.
This is not a tent that you will want to take on a thruhike….do so and you will be sorry; this tent unless you are in dry areas is going to be an exceptionally poor performer.
This is not going to be a good performer for cold trips or for snowy conditions.

Absolutely, the price of entry to overnight hiking can be insane.
In some ways, I'm almost glad that my severe spinal disability obliges me to be a car camper only; I have window-shopped hiking/backpacking gear (because hey, a girl can dream), & the price gap for mid-range gear is pretty dramatic, because the less technical requirements mean that it's just less expensive to produce , say, a Coleman than a Teton.
      I'd hate to be a cash-strapped would-be hiker.
(Sorry for all the de-posts, I kept spotting errors & my interface doesn't allow edits.)

Any single skin tent will have severe condensation in a humid and wet climate, calling it trash because it did the obvious seems a bit odd. It's like buying a winter jacket when you live in Florida and saying it's too hot and makes you sweat. Well yea...no s**t.

I owned the Vik 1 , it just died in Iceland . Hey Guys im hiking Scandinavia each Summer . The Vik 1 lasted 4 years in heavy wind Trips in Norway , Sweden and this year Iceland . The Vik 1 is a good Budget Versatile and free standing sub 2 pounds tent that Served me Well. Condensation is an Issue as with every Single Wall tent but it didnt bother me . For 160usd i dont even care if it gets stolen . It survived many hikes in the North . But 2 weeks ago in iceland the Pole break . Luckily on the Day before finishing all my big hikes in iceland , did one night Cowboy camping . Just bought an tarptent double Rainbow li yesterday so a huge Upgrade. Still a NH vik i can buy for 120euro here and its ok for the 1-2 years weekend backpacking i think

I have tested the 9x times more expensive (1.099 €) tent 2P, winter and wind proof, designed for alpine climbers - weight only 1.2 Kg with carbon poles. I set a camp nearby the river and after a couple of hours I was literally floating in a pool inside the tend due the condensation.

Used the Vik1 for 7 days consecutively. On the nights where I camped on a ridge or knoll, and had some wind, I had no issues with condensation. Even with driving rain. If I camped by the water, where the morning dew would gather, I had big issues. So for me, it works as long as there is a draft. I wouldn't say it's any worse than other budget dome tents I've used.

Condensation reporting; I have slept in only a 100% mesh inner tent and woke up with dew/condensation dripping from the mesh all over me. Obviously I would not say dont buy this mesh because it is not well ventilated, it is 100% ventilated. It would give viewers a more scientific and objective analysis if you included inside humidity compared to outside humidity measurements before dismissing or recommending a tent. Include other data like, if there is morning dew all over the grass everywhere, then it is going to be all over the tent everywhere, and yes including the inside. Is it breezy, is it still etc..

Been using the Vik 1 for a year. In the dry winter desert it really shines. Light, simple and not too expensive. It does what it's designed for. Every design is a compromise. No tent does it all. This tent is no worse than any other single wall non breathable tent, tarptent, or even a low pitch tarp. Condensation is what you pay for other advantages.

Absolutely love the review. I've bought one before this vid came out and loved it so much during warm (w/o a sleeping bag) - cold (fairly dry) weather camping, that I bought one for a friend's birthday, mainly due to weight, decent quality & price. Unfortunately this 2nd one is very disappointing, after setting it up in the park. IDK if anyone's had the same issue I have, but the bottom of the tent body's comically small, length wise. The 72" long klymit static v sleeping pad don't fit in the tent, it bundles up about 2" on one side when inflated & in the tent. The footprint that comes with the tent folds up onto itself when fully constructed. I'm sure it's a manufacturing defect, but being around $150, this shocked me as none of any tents I've had/have has a size issue where it's 10" shorter than spec. Thank god amazon got a free returns service & I had a backup gift for my friend.

I have the Vik 1 w/ the snow skirts.
I only have about 10 nights in it as I predominantly use a hammock and only sleep on the ground when I absolutely HAVE to. ;-)
Been through a couple of fairly rainy nights in it and, honestly, my experience has been overwhelmingly positive.
I have found that as long as it’s guyed out properly and the vents are opened up, it breathes about as well as any other single-wall tent I’ve ever used...which is to say, nowhere near as good as a double wall, but still manageable...
The stitching on mine is top-notch, no frays or runs like you showed on yours.
I’ll wholeheartedly agree with you about rigidity under snow load though. Wouldn’t even want to try that.
I live in the Pac NW, where it does rain quite a bit, (most years anyway), but the relative humidity is usually pretty low, so maybe that’s a factor.
Overall, I’ve been pretty dang pleased with it.
I have been thinking about ordering one of the Lanshan 2 Pro models though to replace it. Mostly for weight considerations vs. living space increase. The Vik 1 is pretty small.
Good review as always, YMMV reigns supreme.

Tested this naturehike tent now 3x in different circumstances (plains, mountains, forest, hot temperatures, chilly and rainy, breezy, warm but morning dew...) ... And yes, it definitely has a condensation problem. It's is quick to build up, it's lightweight, and it's also well ventilated. But it's definitely completely wet on the inner sides so that your hair and your clothes and sleeping bag really get wet once you touch the walls, especially at night.

I have the less common Naturehike Nebula and wild camped in all weathers in the UK and its been great ... it too suffers from some condensation but only ever on the outer and never affected the inner tent at all ... bone dry. Doesnt matter how dry the conditions outside, the outer skin is always wet in the morning, especially the door flaps and I have to light sponge the fabric if I am packing away early ... if not then it drys out pretty quicky in the sun.

I have this tent. The first time was fine. It was warm (10ºC and dry) No issues. However, the second time the condensation was really bad. There was high humidity and the wind stopped just before sunset. There seems to be something about the material which attracts humidity. My friend's 25€ tent was much drier, both inside and out. The material was soaking wet on both sides, but I did not get wet since it seemed to direct the humidity towards the vents and the corners and it did not rain. There was no strong wind to shake it off and rain inside the tent, but there was no wind to dry it out either.

I have the Vik 1 with the snow skirt. It has has little straps to tie them up so they aren't a problem but do add a bit of extra weight. I wanted the standard and somehow ordered the one with the snow skirt. I was leaving on a trip so I just kept it. The Vik is very much a Jekyll and Hyde tent. Unlike yours, the build quality on mine is excellent. It's easy and quick to set up. It pitches tight and has plenty of space for me.....But when the temp drops, the condensation is a real problem. I just used it on a 2 night trip and it was great but it only got down to about 50 F. I can't see ever using it in the winter again but in nice conditions, I love it. If it's cold or rainy, noooooooo

Use the Lanshan2 since 2 years. Tested in all coditions. Extremly hard winds on the GR20. Great tent but you have to seamseal it by your own.
Enough space for a couple and gear in the vestibules (2 weeks of hiking).
      One thing:
My gray version dries very slowly. The pro version should absorb less moisture.

Keep it light and simple for your first camp and don't trust Amazon reviews. I'd go through Luke's backlog of videos for a tent but remember, no tent is perfect, so pick tradeoffs that aren't as relevant to your situation/location. Camp in your backyard or close to home and see what you really need when you do go away. Hope that helps 🙂

    • @Im_With_Stupid
      @Im_With_Stupid 11 місяців тому +1

A truly ultralight 2 person tent under $200 is a hard thing to find. Finding one that doesn't have condensation issues, even harder. You could check out the 3F UL Lanshan 2 or something like the Naturehike Cloud Up 2. When it comes to the Lanshans they have two versions - standard and pro. The standard is a double wall and you can choose either a mesh or solid inner. The pro is a single wall available with either mesh or solid side panels. It's lighter than the standard version, but has the same condensation issues as the Vik and you MUST seam seal it yourself because they don't do it unless you buy it from their site and pay them to seal it.

  • @IceDaemon

This review is complete BS based on my own experience with the exact model. This is a very good tent. The stitching and quality on my tent is absolutely fine. It is a single wall tent. They all have condensation to some extent. I have not noticed condensation any worse than any other single wall tent.

My brother has one of these and on fall nights it's great.. If it's hot and humid it can get a little wet inside, but it's basically single wall so you get what you get. He carries a power brick and uses a 140mm usb fan in the top and it's usually ok.
LOL, It's funny really, there are UL snobs that sleep in survival bivvys and wake up in pools of 'moisture'...
Exoskeleton tents are awesome, I love the vestibule design that can be staked out to make a canopy. It's really nice in the rain when using a camp stove. Specially a wood burning camp stove..
For the same 150 bucks, look at a 3fUL taji 2 if you want a Chinese exoskeleton.

If you are worried about airflow take a dryer vent hose yes the type of metal hoses they use on the back of the dryer ..when you get into the tent take the dryer holes and put it in the corner and zip the door of the tent around the dryer hose.. you will have fresh air coming in through the hose.. I've done that before it works..

A very nice review. I notice the poles are outside the covering. Did you have trouble with ice build-up like you've had on other tents of similar design? Having a white tent is not a good idea in situations of heavy snow. I can just see someone using that in such a situation. They go out and do something, then find their tent buried in snow, lost until the snow melts.
