I bought the first generation of this laptop last year to use for my senior year of high school and then into college. I have had no complaints as far as a student perspective for the laptop, other than the obvious fact that it won't be able to handle much gaming. But the keyboard has held up perfectly. I use this laptop every single day; taking it to school, work, using it for homework, on vacation, on the plane, etc. I am yet to clean it, and it still looks just as clean as the day I got it. Amazed with this laptop series, but salty that I bought the 1st generation and now a year later the 2nd generation came out...
Awesome to hear that the quality is good. And I feel the same way about buying the 2 since they might release the 3 or next version later this year, idk since no announcement
idk about the US but in Australia a lot of the people in classes around me fork out for macbook pro's, I think the whole students have no money thing is more of a US problem than an everyone problem
Students with money may be Macbooks, but not everyone can afford that sort of money for a computer. Macs are expensive, and so is this laptop.... If you have the money though then i would suggest both this machine and also Macbooks are both great.
Hey I don’t know if you’ll read this now, considering I’m many hours late, but I’ll go for a shot. I’ve been watching you since 2015. I was 9. I was so fascinated in gaming setups at the time and your videos had to do with.. Well.. Lots of gaming setups, so I had subscribed and you’ve been my favorite tech UA-camr since. Now I’ve grown to watch you for your video quality, (it’s incredible btw) and your personality + the setups obviously. I am 12 now. - A fan of you for 3 years about now.
I reckon it's unfair to call it out on video editing ability, this isn't really a machine designed for that, and if you wanted to do that you could glean more power by getting the i7 variant. However I own this device and for what I want it for it's great, I bring it everywhere with me and the battery lasts all day. I'm sometimes using it for 7 hour stints in the laboratory and it's still got charge after that. PDF annotation works well (especially with the pen) and it handles general office great and with uncompromising speed. The criticism of the cover fabric is both valid and incorrect. I've already spilled chemicals on it in the lab, water runs off it just fine with no stains (must be hydrophobic), but oil I think wouldn't fare the same, but when are you sitting there with a pot of grease.
No lie, I got mine yesterday from Best Buy. Open box with one little ding from the box falling 😂 that you couldn’t find in 3 minutes. 8gigs ram and 256 ssd in this black for $699
Tyger Voods depends on what you’ll use it for, if you’re not a specialist running apps that are very demanding then you should do just great! I’m in love with mine so far.
They normal do discounts for students. The base models are normally slashed by about $100-200 from their original price if you can confirm you are a college student. It's actually all not that bad. Same thing with Apple, and hence is why most college students use Apple laptops.
maybe not you, but there are all kinds of people in the world, some have money either theirs or their parents, we all need to respect and value when we can afford things AND when other people can afford them. Be nice and spread positive vibes
I like that you’re basically the only UA-cam product reviewer that actually talks about video editing? (Thank you for doing so, since I have to do that a lot) Currently, I am looking for a new laptop and I was considering this, but thanks to your in-depth review, I won’t be buying this device, due to the poor gaming performance.
I love the Surface Laptop. I have V1 and it's great so sure V2 would be good too. I have 512GB 16GB RAM i7. I am always running One Note, Skype, Teams, Edge, Chrome, Visual Studio, VS Code and Office stuff. Chrome is what eats my memory the most and can slow down but still all great :P
I just bought this laptop, and the one thing that is bothering me is the screen reflection. I find it slightly annoying to see my reflection in the screen when I'm trying to stream video. Not sure if anyone else is bothered by this?
Gaming? Video editing? It is comparable to a MacBook Air and marketed to the student market or highly mobile professional. I see numerous videos of people dinging performance of PCs/Macs when they are using them for things they are not intended. As to the fabric, my son has used his 1st Gen for two years in college and it looks nearly new.
Students love to complain about how they're always broke or don't have money for a decent laptop. Yet, they rack up massive amounts of debt because they don't want to work + go to school and spend their money on other needless BS. BTW - this laptop is legit. Sleek black, I think I will buy it as my main Windows laptop!
useless review. Guy gets a laptop that is designed for portability and lightness, then goes on half the review testing it for gaming and high-end processing which it was not designed for.
I used a Toshiba laptop for 4 years in college that I bought at Walmart on 2014. I didn't have a lot of money at the time. It was ok at first but now it is slow as shit. It only has 4 GB Ram. I'm going to grad school now, so I need this laptop. I am willing to invest the money.
10 hours battery life doing video editing and streaming videos? Really? With 15-30 W consumption while doing that this laptop wouldn't last more than 2 to 4 hours with its 45 Wh battery.
I'm done with school, but if I was I'd go with an Acer or Dell to get the most bang for my buck. The Surface 2 is aesthetically pleasing and light for mobility, but the price is not geared to students IMO.
I have a surface pro 4 and they also use the fabric keyboard and I've had it for at least a year. It doesn't wear down as much as you are thinking, I understand why you would think that but it just gets a little darker, not so much as staining or unsightly. Just if anyone was wondering about the keyboard.
Microsoft surface laptop is what am planning to buy as there is discount instead of surface 2 But I doubt if am gonna regret not buying the latest one please suggest
They won't remove the touch screen, its one of the defining features of Surface products, the battery life is still really good, quite a bit more than my XPS 15. Alcantara is also really good. I recently got the laptop, the Alcantara makes the laptop feel more premium. I agree with you on the SD card port though. I would get this if the SD card isn't a necessity.
You forgot to mention the front facing camera. Surface line has yummy camera so you know, it's kind of helpful when skyping or conferecing with my professor
one of the best reviews done ever for a laptop. Just one question, I am confused between surface laptop 3 256GB for $1300 or razer blade stealth for $1100. I mainly use the laptop for watching videos, browsing, games like counter strike, also work on excel. Can anyone suggest which to buy?
What an awesome UA-camr. Could have easily just made a cookie cutter review, didn't. Could have easily stretched the video to 10 minutes, Didn't. What a guy. Keep being awesome Frank
I realize I'm super late to the party here, but how can anyone justify the price when you consider the fact that you can't upgrade storage and there are almost no IO ports...
A lot of students use Apple devices which are even more expensive. Anyway, 1 usb A port on the device that's supposed to be used on the go? C'mon, I'm not gonna carry surface dock with me everywhere
It should be noted that Microsoft does offer student deals, where they do slash the price by about $100-200 on the devices. With bundles, you can save much more. Plus, they are still selling the previous generation new and with huge discounts, so, I'd say it's pretty affordable actually. Plus, these kinds of costs go into their debt anyways, so, they might as well stay spend the money for a quality laptop as opposed to crappy one. Also, the Surface Go is always available for people on a budget.
>$1000 >For students Yeah, for starbucks soy latte sipping cosmopolitan socialist types with hipster glasses and rich mummy and daddy. Oh right, those use macbooks. Whoops.
It's called greentexting if you're referring to the chans. If not, it's called quoting. It is widely used on forums such as Stack Exchange Mathematics... Either way referring to them as meme arrows is kind of funny and weird...
I love how you use socialist as derogatory AND inherently equate socialist with person who has nice things. I'm not a socialist or anything, but damn that's self defeating. "They're rich, you really wanna live like them?!?!"
This is not an expensive laptop by any means. However, the price to performance ratio is trash. I got a laptop for $1099 with an i7 8550U, Nvidia MX150, 16gb DDR4, and a 512gb SSD. It's also a two in one, 4K display, and amazing quality. Again, an i5/8gb for a Surface $1k is not worth it.
Thanks for the good review, you mentioned nearly all points. I would like to know more about noise and fans. Does the fans kick in during casual work like web browsing, watching movies, word, excel or do they stay off until the cup reach 90% of load as Microsoft said. Is this the case with you Surface Laptop 2. Thanks
all reviewers are very similiar, do not tell me it will lag with after effects, no one in their right mind would get anything less than a nice i7 and 16 or 32 gigs of ram to get pro work done
At least the base model for the core i5 8gb ram and 256gb ssd is just under a $1,000 which is awesome compared to most "BUDGET Laptops" of the same price and sooo much better than the Macbook for a hell of a lot less. So i effeminately will be gettin it over the summer or early fall. Although I wish it had a SD Card slot or even a MicroSD card slot to transfer over standard photos and videos but otherwise I love this laptop.
You guys think this would be good for someone doing computer science? The most intensive tasks I'm going to be running are Visual Studio and Unity. (C#/C++ and Python are my main languages). If not - what portable laptops would you guys recommend?
I was wondering too but i7 core version will work fine. My work computer runs i5 core and it's a Dell and it does all of my work fine only one time it had problems and needed it replaced but it was for other stuff, but I am on that one for 40 hours a week. (I am a almost 1 year software Developer) I know its 7 months so this is old .
can i edit photos on this laptop? and can i play some games? like sims 3 lol i get confused by its graphic card, i have heard, that dedicated card is better than integrated
The only problem is that bloody fabric it looks nice but it stains easily and its hard to remove those stains, beautiful laptop but that fabric puts me off I'd prefer metal that would probably be more durable.
2:57 Why are you concerned about the long term quality? This is the same material as last year. Shouldn't there be data already, from you or a different reviewer?
Microsoft is obviously trying to compete with premium laptops like the Macbook Pro and so far they have failed - The fact they were offering 4GB of RAM on a 2017 model is a slap in the face to anyone buying a laptop, praising the bump to 8GB is laughable at best - The trackpad is super small forcing you to use a wireless mouse, sorry im not spending $1000 and being forced to use a mouse bc it's too small - Speakers under the keyboard is another design flaw, if other manufacturers can manage premium sounding speakers so can Microsoft - And by far the dumbest decision of all is the fabric covering on the laptop, like you mentioned once it stains your $1000 is now a stained mess Microsoft is on the right path but right now at this price point it is a dud
I have hyperhydrosis (I sweat in my palms and feet often) that alcantara leather wont work for me :/. Maybe the Surface Book 3 or the Surface Laptop 3 with gloves whenever those come out.
I dont understand people freaking out about the price. Its cheaper compared to apple computers. Literally all college students have macs. I cant afford a mac, but this I can afford.
So3:2= 13.5:9 How can 13.5:9 be more screen compared to 16:9 when you already once said that 21:9 is more screen. Is this screen stretched vertically or is it squeezed horizontally? If it's the first one then it means that 21:9 is squeezed vertically so you are loosing some screen and vice versa. Different aspect ratio doesn't mean more/less screen, its just different aspect ration and nothing else.
No, aspect ratio affects size. Take phones for example. The new 2:1 trend allows for phones to get bigger, but still remain comparable to smaller sized 16:9 phones. Compare the Nexus 6 to an iPhone XR. They both have 6in displays on paper, but the Nexus is way bigger due to the aspect ratio.
Why do people say its too expensive when almost half of students these days buy macbooks?
1 Because people are stupid and 2 I doubt it's anywhere near half buying Macbooks
Only 15” MacBook Pro’s are overpriced, the 13” pro is pretty good for its price.
idk you'd be surprised, in my experience it's at least a third. I know like 6 people with MacBook airs.
The macbook air is really old and relatively cheap (terrible value, but cheap)
Jake Townend they updated the line, and can pre-ordered currently

2:57 Why are you concerned about the long term quality? This is the same material as last year. Shouldn't there be data already, from you or a different reviewer?
Wop wop tbh I've been looking for surface laptop one reviews and there are not many from the off the brain tech youtubers
Microsoft is obviously trying to compete with premium laptops like the Macbook Pro and so far they have failed
- The fact they were offering 4GB of RAM on a 2017 model is a slap in the face to anyone buying a laptop, praising the bump to 8GB is laughable at best
- The trackpad is super small forcing you to use a wireless mouse, sorry im not spending $1000 and being forced to use a mouse bc it's too small
- Speakers under the keyboard is another design flaw, if other manufacturers can manage premium sounding speakers so can Microsoft
- And by far the dumbest decision of all is the fabric covering on the laptop, like you mentioned once it stains your $1000 is now a stained mess
Microsoft is on the right path but right now at this price point it is a dud
how bad do you think the laptop will perform if I play sims on it?
Mate for that price vs specs i will go for Lenovo X1
Jack nickolson in the background 😁
At 1:45 , can someone tell me what is that under the laptop ? A case ? I would love to know
Great review but looking at the price....I can't afford it so I'll just look at it :/
It looks lovely on that end though
I have hyperhydrosis (I sweat in my palms and feet often) that alcantara leather wont work for me :/. Maybe the Surface Book 3 or the Surface Laptop 3 with gloves whenever those come out.
I actually have hyperhydrosis too, and trust me its way better than any matte, plastic, or metal laptop rest
I dont understand people freaking out about the price. Its cheaper compared to apple computers. Literally all college students have macs. I cant afford a mac, but this I can afford.
So3:2= 13.5:9
How can 13.5:9 be more screen compared to 16:9 when you already once said that 21:9 is more screen.
