So I installed a pump in my creek. The pool I located the pump is 470 feet (distance) away from my house, and 90 feet of vertical rise. I did a ton of research. I decided to do what the well/water experts strongly advised me against doing. They recommended two or three pumps with the first pump down by the creek, but sitting up on the bank. It seemed complicated and prone to problems, and priming that type of system can be a pain. I installed an standard 10 stage, 230 volt vertical submersible pump, the same pump that is used in well holes. The experts told me the high flow from winter storms would drive boulders, rocks and logs into my pump and destroy it. They were right about the storms, logs, boulders and rocks. I had the wiring harness ripped out of the pump twice. I had the pump ripped off the 1" diameter steel pipe once and found the pump two pools down but still tethered to the steel cable (backup) I secured it with. The pump finally gave out, after 22 years! When I took the pump in to the well shop to get diagnosed, the service tech looked at the battered stainless housing and was amazed. He said in over 20 years he had never seen anything like it. The pump looked like it had been through a war. But for 22 years that trusty pump (3/4 horsepower) provided me and then my family with almost uninterrupted fresh water.
If I were in your situation, I would dig as deep a hole18" or so in diameter right where that little pool is. Get a length of 12" steel pipe one foot longer than your hole is deep. Drill holes in the pipe (perforate) to allow water to seep in. Wrap the pipe in stainless steel screen to help keep debris out but let the water in. Make a cap for it out of steel plate. Mount the pump to the cap using a 1" steel nipple welded half in/half out in the center of the cap. Get a spool of well pump wire (usually three strand red/yellow/black). All you will need is one pump, if you get a real well pump as 3/4 to 1hp, as well pumps can easily lift water 300' vertical.

@@Lobaby55 I ran federal and state child literacy programs including a First Five program. We worked with parents to teach them what the milestones are and ways to interact with their children to help them reach those milestones. Assessing children zero to five is what I did for seven years. Sadie is doing wonderfully. It's important to point out though that children go through phases. I've seen children at four that were blowing us away in how far out in front of their peers they were, and then by second or third grade, they had dropped back to very average. I would liken it to growth spurts on the social, emotional, cognitive level. The most promising sign I've observed in Sadie is that when she was around 8 months, she was very tuned into her environment and was very contemplative, calm, and didn't express signs of being over stimulated. You could see her observing her environment and taking it in. It is an aspect of being receptive to information and curious about one's world.

Craig McCredie - i agree 100% --- they could convert their current latrine (the toilet seat over a hole in the ground) into a dump site for the composting toilet. it will work out perfectly if they can find a local source for coconut core (without having to make it for themselves), which will work much better than dirt or whatever else they were using before. they just can’t support trying to USE their humanure, which really only happens in communities which create the infrastructure to support each other in that effort, such as in some tiny house communities/cooperatives in new zealand.

BEAUTIFUL BLANKET of STARS. You should go with the water source that is closer. This way you are not crossing lines with anyone else and in turn it becomes your OWN personal water source. More work and more cost, but close for any repairs and you don't have to worry about others messing with it. I would also monitor it with a few cameras just in case. Can't wait to see the Sauna.❤️🥰

Yeah, but they have water under their property. They just think that hiring someone to drill a well is too expensive & they would have to trust somebody to do it. There are some methods to drill wells very easy by hand, and he could do it himself. There’s a bunch of UA-cam videos about it. The water would be much cleaner too. They can definitely control bacteria a lot easier and reliably by putting in 2 wells. One hand pump, and then another one electric with a shed for the holding tank. They could then feed water to stock tanks in the field from the well out on their land. that’s a lot shorter than 3 miles of pipe on a waterway that can end up being a problem between local people and government. Hopefully they will research and find out. It’s a lot easier to put in a well then they think it is. People have been doing it by hand for thousands of yrs. This couple seems more than adequate to figure it out. 😁

Hey guys, I'm a licensed plumber and a licensed electrician. My advice would be to adapt to the 300' option. A way to do that would be with a concrete holding tank built at the trickle water source (or a barrel collection arrangement). At the collection holding tank, install an electric water pump that sucks from the tank (or barrels). Fill your collection barrels at the house by manually turning the pump on (and, most importantly, OFF) with an electric switch at the house using electricity from your solar power setup. Increase your water storage barrels at the house to allow for 4-5 days of water usage volume (recalculating for showers, toilets, bathtubs, etcetera). Bury or semi-bury and box-in and cover the enhanced barrel storage system at the house (for aesthetics and protection while preserving serviceability). Run your water up to the house with black ABS tubing (1/2" ABS (or 3/8" ABS if it's available) will reduce the workload of the water pump). If the water pump is rated to work at max 20 AMPS, you would normally run #12 wire to power the water pump. But because of the distance (300'), run #8 wire so that the voltage drop doesn't burn out the water pump motor. I recommend running your electrical wire in a minimum of Schedule 40 PVC pipe for crush/tear/break protection from all the possible forms of traffic (under roadways use Schedule 40 PVC (grey) Conduit...OR Schedule 80 PVC (grey) Conduit if it's a shallow bury or if heavier equipment will ever pass over it). Protect your ABS waterline at traffic spots the same way you protect your electric lines (Conduit) at those traffic crossings. I'm sure you will address debris and dirt filtering before the source water enters the concrete holding tank (or barrels). Good luck. I know you'll find satisfaction however you end up doing it.

Bruce Angus, if he does the trickle water site he will have to either carry the water or put a pump in place. Where he runs a dedicated line from up above directly to the house with a line coming off for the bathroom and a line coming out of the botom of the house that goes down to Rodrigos house and any houses built. That way he won't have to worry about fixing pumps or for that matter, buy pumps to begin with. Since Rodrigos is the lowest of the property they could put a value so the system can be flushed out.

Hey Guys, I vote you go with this Pro. Another 3 pluses to the pump system, 1- the water source is on your property and stands a lesser chance of rights being contested in the future, and 2- the water from the spring has already been partially filtered and you have more control over it than the waterfall source, 3- it is infinitely scalable as others join you on the farm.

Team Nomadic! You guys are amazing. I've been silently following you for a while. Two years ago I retired and relocated from the USA to Boquete with my wife. What we've noticed is that during the dry season, many bodies of water run dry. So as you decide between the two water sources of your water supply, determine which source is affected the least by the dry season. We've observed many bodies of water totally dry up during the dry season.
I have a 3rd water source option I would like to present. In the video, you showed several pipes that your neighbors have already successfully installed to bring water down to their properties. Can you broker a deal with one of your neighbors to tap into their pipe in order to flow water over to your property? If the water pressure is predetermined to be a possible hindrance, a solar-powered water pump can be installed at the connecting point in order to enhance water pressure. I'm no expert! I simply wanted to offer my "dos centavos." 🤣

Here is my thoughts...you should consider if your new septic system drain field for the bathroom could possibly find its way to your lower elevation water source ?? If not, might be the easiest option. Probably the larger waterfall source has a better chance of being less polluted. Cost to run the pipe from the waterfall VS electric to run pumps to bring water to upper elevation is both a long and short term consideration. your best option for your own self reliance is to use what is on your property. There are several ways to get the water up from the bottom of your property to the top. One small solar powered pump can work as an intermediate method to get water uphill as far as it can to some sort of tank to hold as much water as it can....from there you can use a ram pump (or several) to go uphill in steps to some point above your bathroom ( so you can have some level of water pressure available. that should give you a more reliable and secure source of water than 4 kilometers of exposed PVC pipe.

My recommendation would be to have both water locations tested for purity. Then make a decision and use the second spot if purity was good as a back up.
I’d actually use the river waterfall first as the flow is much better.

Jordan, I recommend your own property for the water you need a well pump from the states, they can handle the 100 ft elevation lift no problem some people in the mountains of Virginia have 100 to 500 foot deep well’s. If you watch( wild wonderful off-grid) channel they just installed a well pump should give you ideas on what you need. Make sure the line has one way check valves installed. And try to damn up the pool area to make a deeper and larger pool of water. Much love from FL.

I would use the gravity fed supply. For multiple reasons. 1st being that its more plentiful, 2nd being its moving water. The water supply from down below can get get stagnate and might not have enough volume for your future needs. Remember, you have multiple homes on the farm and everyone has similar needs. Id pipe it to a central location like a pond. Then use the wind to your advantage and keep the pond aerated with a windmill. This will keep it fresh. As the farm changes and the demand for water increases, you can pipe it around from there.

I'm not a homesteader myself, but am obsessed with it. If I was to do it all again, it's most definitely how I would live. As to the water supply, I would eventually do both so there is always a backup system. The first one I would devote my time to is the fast flowing creek 5 miles away. That would be your main water source & then supported by the rainwater & the small pool on your property. With the amount of water consumption & any future endeavors that will make use of water; the creek is the most dependable in my opinion. Are you familiar with Tyler & Todd? They have a homestead in Canada. You guys & them are my favorite channels to watch on youtube. I think talking to them & getting their opinion would be invaluable to you. They have done some incredible & smart things on their property.

I think you have overlooked another solution and that is to make better use of the water you already have. On the farm you are only utilizing a small part of your rainfall. Extra water tanks would help and you could use some of that water to generate power.
As for getting a new water source. It might be easier to start with the spring on your land and use that to fill your tanks.
A micro turbine could generate power to offset some of the power use for moving water around.
An alternative might be to build a holding pond lower in your property to catch rainfall

Love the show, I've done both of these scenarios, off grid, in the mountains! If you have access to 500' rolls of Polyethylene Pipe it works like a charm for the gravity feed. Also, you could use 1" in diameter instead of all that 2" PVC that the others used . Just split it to the 4 tanks with float valves so they constantly stay full. You could also split it to have on demand water around the farm. That 2'' PVC flows with some serious pressure. By the time it gets to your location it would have the force of a fire hose. With 2'' I was constantly battling over 100psi. It was just too hard on valves and water heaters and such and I had to install pressure reducers at every sink/shower/spigot/float valves for tanks etc. Again the Poly Pipe is the way to go for long distance.
Secondly I highly recommend against the pumping up hill. First of all powering them is the main obstacle. When pumping up hill those motors don't like to turn off and on frequently. I've used submersible pumps but they absolutely cannot run dry. The distance uphill you mentioned would require a serious pump and they send a lot of water so in other words you have to have a flowing stream not just a trickle because you will pump out all the water faster than it can replenish. The other pumps I've used are the GT30 which are above ground but again these don't want to be turned off and on a frequent basis. Having them on float valves for instance would burn the pump out pretty quick. You would have to empty your tanks, go turn on the pump (presumably with a generator) until the tanks were full then wash, rinse, repeat. Also they have to stay primed when turned on. Like how we use straw's in a drink, when the motor turns on it can only pull water up like 15' before it can start sending it uphill and again if that source empties and you start sucking air that motor will burn out in hours. So for above ground pumps when you go turn your pump on you have to fill the pump up first unless you just want to trust that it will draw the water up. Compared to gravity feed, pumps are a HUGE pain when you rely on water for off grid living. Especially if the task is getting it uphill. Moving water from pond to pond is one thing but homestead water source being pumped uphill is not fun, easy, or cheap.
Lastly, be conscientious about the water usage if going gravity feed when it comes to leaks and unnecessary usage. I know you have a lot of rain there but that 2'' pipe has the potential to change the course of 100's of thousands of gallons of water if not constantly maintained which could alter your surrounding ecosystem dramatically. I imagine there's plenty of water there but just something to think about. Have fun! The gravity feed was truly a fun process the whole way through. Thanks for sharing your farm life!

Fun fact - you cannot "suck" water more than 33.9 feet. Even in space. It would boil. The good news is elevation is irrelevant under "pressure" - well almost irrelevant. You will need to put the well pump at the bottom of the hill at the source, but once it's pressurized anything above is is fine. You will also have control of it as it's on your land and the cost would be less vs 4km of pvc pipe.
Glad to see you back on the homestead!

If you can get a 1/2 HP to 1 HP heavy duty sump pump, then you could pump that elevation with 1 or 2 pumps. You just have to get electricity to the pump there by the river. It would most likely be the cheaper option since you have much less pipe to run from the river and it would be a lot closer for troubleshooting.

I would say pump it from your spring on your land. You should only need one pump, the power draw is a bummer, but I think you can work around it. That way, if there ever is a problem, its on your land and close by. If you went the long pipe route, there are just a ton of opportunities for damage to that pipe. I feel like you'd have to add pipe repair to your chore list. Not sure what costs are in that area, but that much pipe may be more costly than short amount of pipe and a submersible pump. It is nice that you have those two options, though! Keep up the good work and good luck!
