20 Animated Movie Changes In Other Countries

- One of the benefits of being in the 21st century is in majority of cases, no matter where you live in the world, you know you’ll be able to enjoy and have access to amazing animated movies like Lightyear and Encanto. Having that dependability, whether it be in Disney movies, Pixar movies, or even films from Dreamworks-we’re looking at you Shrek-we’re able to take our knowledge of these films worldwide. But what if that wasn’t exactly true? We’ve discovered that there have been animated movies that premiered with significant differences depending where the big screen was located.
If you think about it, it makes perfect sense for creators to alter their films in order to represent the country its showing in. After all, there are still barriers between countries when it comes to language and culture. Something that makes sense in America isn’t always going to translate properly in Poland. You’ll see what changes needed to be made to Shrek for this exact reason.
From title changes, scene changes, and even character changes, some of our favorite films become unrecognizable when we take a look at what the rest of the world knows these movies as.
What do you think of these changes? Do you think they were all necessary? Did we miss a change that maybe you caught? Let us know in the comment section below. And if you liked this video make sure to hit that like and subscribe button and we’ll catch you in another video. Thanks for watching TheThings Animated!

What country are you watching these animated movie from? 🥰
India
Indians are everywhere on the internet 🤡
Moana from Italy, of course i know it as Oceania.
@@raindorachannel It’s not!
australia 🇦🇺
All movies in turkey
One of my favorite animated changes I noticed when I was living in France and watched Shrek in French for the first time. In the American version, the skeezy, womanizing, Robin Hood is given a French accent, almost certainly due to US stereotypes about French men. So I was curious what the French version of Shrek was going to do. Well, make him Italian of course. lmao
lmao
It's funny cause in Italian it stayed as French djnddn
As an italian, I think that's right, but the french accent fits better for me ahahah
That's really funny, because in The Little Mermaid, France did the same thing with the crazy French chef guy - made him Italian lol
@Blackavar ahahah I never thought about The Little Mermaid. I mean, it makes sense after all...
No, Moana does not have light eyes and freckles in the Italian version. Thumbnail is a clickbait 🤷🏻♀️ just the title name changed to Oceania and her name to Vaiana.
Yep
I guess they just wanted to make a thumbnail that has to do w what the video is at and to attract more attention 🤷🏿♀️
Actually in Italy the title of the film changed to Oceania, but the name of the protagonist, as in the rest of Europe, was changed to Vaiana.
Not all of Europe!
It's still Moana in The UK
@@daisygirlmochi768 i was gonna say lol
UK is not Europe though
@@chuxhushuva457 yes it is.
@@s-t-a-r-r-y_n-i-g-h-t-s but... the brexit in 2020...
In Italy "Oceania" is just the title of the movie , but the name of the protagonist is Vaiana like in the rest of Europe
I come from Italy, the reason why the title was changed, is because it had the same name, of an Italian actress, who became famous in the eighties for dirty and sexual films she made, named Moano Pozzi
@@beatrixlight3715 weird, like in the US most people may know Mia kalifa but Mia is such a common name I hardly think it matters…also how does a pornstar have more PR than a Disney movie? If you Google search for “Moana movie” and that pornstar comes up I’ll give you a point but if you do that and the Disney movie pops up then goes my point Disney has better marketing than anyone 😂
I remember when they changed Zootopia to Zootropolis. I live in Canada, and everyone was so confused about why they changed it. I remember it was actually a whole thing 🤣 Anyways, I still wonder to this day, why???
They should just call the movie “Zoop” to confuse the audience even more
What’s a hoser?
They did the same with the last pirates of the Carribean that got the name changed in certain countries
For me it was always Zootropolis and then they changed the name to Zootopia.
i live in canidaa
I have a correction for #1: while Coco title was changed to 'Viva! A Vida é uma Festa' (Live! Life is a Party) in Brazil, grandma Coco name was adapted to Inês (baring no relation to the Brazilian movie title). All that to avoid similarities with our poop word, like stated in the video.
About Coco, in portuguese isn't there a diference between Coco (coconut), Cocô (shit)? As far as I know there is no reason for changing the name, it means a tropical fruit that children know and eat.
About Moana, how many children see pronography? How many parents believe that all names must be censored when there is a porno actor with that name? Only people who watch pornography can complain about a name, I think they are exposing themselves.
Japan has a problem with colorism (discrimination based on color), they eliminated the brown skin and replaced it with white skin and the typical asian stereotype (like a low quality cosplay)...It's clearly a decision made to earn more money.
Also, they haven't seen anime enough to know that brown skin anime characters aren't very rare.
@@DuskSunDawn Yes. "Coco", as spoken in the title means coconut, to mean poop, you have to heavy stress the second "o". It was just a dumb change for the sake of it.
I think they changed to Ines more because it’s a more common grandma name
Apesar de coco ser uma fruta, a primeira vista as pessoas leriam cocô, então foi bom eles terem evitado. Sem contar que as crianças não iriam perdoar esse nome, principalmente as da 5 série.
Fun fact: In Czech dubbing it is a common trope to use Czech folk heroes and/or historical figures when some English ones are referenced. I remember in Shrek, when he came to save Fiona from the tower, he told her, in Czech: You were expecting king Matej. (instead of the generic prince charming)
Haha, in polish translate you have almost same situation. Maybe not with prince... But for example, when Gingerbread Man is interrogated by Farquad he don;t speak about Muffin Man but about heroes from Czehoslovak fairytale "The Tales of Moss and Fern". They are a lot better known here that Muffin Man. ;)
And what about Inside Out? Do we have ice hokey or football in that one scene? 👀
@@adrianacernochova Oh shoot, believe me, I saw this animation, still I don;t remember. But it was probably football scene. If I recall good.
@@joannaostrowska548 Lol! He talks about “Vcelka Maja” instead of the Muffin Man in Czech if I remember correctly!
I'm from Poland and "Zootopia" was changed to "zwierzogród"
That's just translation, meaning is pretty much the same.
True, Moana Pozzi was an adult movie star in Italy back in the 80s and 90s, but she actually died young (from cancer) in the early 1990s, so the younger generations of Italian kids have no memory of her and don't associate the name "Moana" with her at all (unless their 40 and 50-something parents told them about her... which I very much doubt!). I actually think there was no need to change the Disney Moana's name into Vaiana in Italy and certain other countries, but hey - I didn't make that decision!
That's something I wondered too. Before that entire debate, I had no idea who Moana was supposed to be and none of my friends did, until we googled the name change of the movie to find out.
I believe that there are also trademarks in this woman's name, so it was also for copyright.
I don't think it has as much to do with children already knowing about her but rather *getting* to know about her. An assuming and unsupervised child could google "Moana" and get results relevant for their location, thus stumbling upon some R-rated links and content.
Disney’s localisation team is really stepping up their game with their years and it’s so cool!
The cover of the video shows Moana completely different from how it really is in Italy 😅
Actually the character design of Moana (Vaiana) in Italy is the same of the original version. I didn't understand why this cover suggests that there are differences.

It is Zootopia for me. It didn't change where I am in Canada. (BC)
In the theaters it was called Zootopia and when it came out in DVD/Blu-ray it was still called Zootopia.
Even renting/streaming it with online services it's still called Zootopia for me.
It was very bizarre when he said it changed. I was like "wut? No it isn't".
Same. I’m in the place where rats are banned.
@@veratheun1corn Is that Alberta? I don’t remember lol
@@Halovian_ yeah lol
It was Zootopia in Ontario Canada as well. I've never heard the title of Zootropolis for the Zootopia movie.
Well no zootropolis is Alberta too I guess
Yeap, Polish Shrek has many changes that are hilarious tu us. For example, there was old cartoon about two guys living in forest "Żwirek and Muchomorek". During interrogarion Gingerbread Man is telling that Żwirek is flirting with Muchomorek.
"Żwirek kręci z Muchomorkiem" became VERY popular catchphrase at some point
In Croatia they always include diferent dialects because we have many (3 main and a few mixed ones) and it’s always funny hearing them, plus I think it’s great for kids to get to know them a bit.
Oh yes, in Poland many Disney, DreamWorks, Blue Sky (etc.)
animations have 'inside jokes' that only Polish people can handle with it and relate to it. Sometimes they change many scenes, meanings and the whole concept of animations. There are lot of inside jokes from our polish films, our culture and quotes that are legendary for us 👍
I would say kudos to the translators to take cultural specialties into account instead of sometimes translating literally and killing the gags.
In Atlantis The Lost Empire the character of Vincenzo Santorini is Italian for most of the world. In Poland he is Russian and his name was changed to Wołodia. In Russian version of the movie, however, Vincenzo is a son of Georgian immigrants and his name is Vano Santouri.
The movie Coco keeps the name in Portugal. We have the word cocó means poop in portuguese. And we have the word côco too, means coconut. We pronounce in diferent ways.
Brazil is so stupid they only can pronounce it in only one way 😂
In fact in Brazil the name of Mama Coco became Mama Inês. The name of the film changed to "Viva! Life is a party!"
Em Português brasileiro pode-se pronunciar "Côucou". Mas o nome dado "Viva! A vida é uma festa!" tem um apelo comercial muito bom.
@@lucapellari5985 É mesmo!
Zootopia is titled Zootropolis in most of european countries, actually, not just in UK.
And btw, the thumbnail is pure clickbait. Moana wasn’t redesigned to have freckles nor blue eyes in Italy.
Well most youtube channels forget that Europe exists.
@@PikaLink91 No kidding. It’s kind of annoying at times.
Cars 1 in ukrainian translation is just another level.
They changed names of Mater (to Сирник (curd fritter) because Tow truck in ukrainian is буксирник).
They also gave a name to that huge red combine Валєра it's just a name but it gives you the "don't mess with my field kind of vibe".
Honestly, that translation is still masterpiece to me and raised my standarts pretty high.
The reason why it was changed in Italy is , as you said, because of a famous adult "movies" actress called Moana Pozzi...
I loved the movie Coco & I decided to watch it w my Brazilian mom & I set the language to Portuguese & was SO confused as to why they were calling her Mama Inês 😂
Should'a maybe done a preview xD I have a friend who is so obsessed with this movie that she's watched it in numerous different languages.
I'm Italian and Moana it's called Oceania only for the title, in the movie was called Vaiana.
I’m Canadian too, but have Italian background on my mom’s side and I heard that to be NOT only the UK title, but the rest of Europe too!
By the way, I own SEVERAL Italian versions of Disney movies, including Classic Disney Animated features such as:
Lady and the Tramp
Cinderella (2012 edition!)
The Sword in the Stone
All three Lion King films (they were all in one box which I found for quite the bargain on Amazon!)
Lilo and Stitch
Finding Nemo
101 Dalmatians (Ok, it’s the UK edition, but it has Italian as a language option, so this is why it’s on this list!)
And a few other tiles! What’s strange is that I’ve NEVER EVEN BEEN to Italy, and yet, a third of my foreign language (yes, I have some from other European countries AND their respective colonies too!), Disney dvd and Blu Ray collection, are from there!
Cenerentola (edizione 2012!)
@@laurakruk4692 It's actually still Moana in The UK!
My biggest beef is Encanto. In English Isabella sings "What else can I do" while in Spanish it's "It'll be inspiration". Changes the characters trauma from repressing her emotions/gift to "I'm not creative, I guess I'll give other plants a try"
The voice of "harv" in cars uk version was voiced by Jeremy Clarkson - one of the 3 presenters of the popular car tv show "Top Gear".
In Germany Zootopia is called Zoomania. I believe they changed it to Zoomania because there was already something that was called Zootopia
One that I have always be wondering about was in Robin Hood of Disney. In our version when Robin asks Marion where does she wants to go for honeymoon she answers Greece. So for years I had been wondering what was her original answer. Turns out it was "sunny Spain". Well, close enough XD
In Italy we change the title with Oceania, but the name of the princess is Vaiana
I’m from Canada and watched zootopia in Canada and we never called zootopia, zootropolis
Amazing video 👌
Zootropolis was the name in Denmark as well. Also, while words and text etc does sometimes get translated to Danish in the theatrical version, like with the Bimbo scene in Inside Out, in the DVD release, which has to cater to all of Scandinavia, these changes are unfortunately reverted back to their English origin, in order to work with all four languages (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Polish).
In Germany its: Zoomania
The Racoon Dog in the Japanese version of Zootopia is actually called "Tanooki"
NOOK
That's because a tanuki is a real Japanese animal and it gets translated to "racoon dog" in English countries rather than keeping the actual name for the animal 🤷♀️
Not an animated movie, but the Terminator says "Sayonara, baby" in the Spanish version, instead of "Hasta la vista, baby".
it's so interesting I decided to use my presentation as one of references! Thank you
I remember watching Shera in my language as a kid in the early 90s. I never noticed or thought about her race or ethnicity because she was speaking my language. These dubs/translations/contextualisations make a massive difference, especially for the kids because we couldn't understand English at all.
In Ralph Breaks the Internet, Eboy's voiceactor changed in the UK. In the USA version, he was voiced by Sean Giambrone and in the UK version, he was voiced by Daniel Middleton (DanTDM).
1:17 It's not a leopard, it's a jaguar
In the uk its still called Moana
Cocô -> Poop
Coco -> Coconut
Still makes no sense! Lol
Actually, Polish version makes almost new movie, wich wasn't unpopular in 2000's movies. Thy used to put a lot of heart into dubbing, wich resulted in many movies becoming iconic.
I’m in Canada and I’ve never seen Zootropolis. Only Zootopia
i am in africa and its zootropolis for me
In Germany Zootopia was changed to Zoomania
In cars: in the English version, guido speaks italian but in the already italian version he speaks in dialect
Speaking of changing the title of _Coco,_ in Japan, it's "Remember Me". Personally, I think this is a better name. For starters, it breaks from the dull "single word movie title" trend. But it's also a title that works on multiple levels. The main theme of the movie is being remembered, and it's also the title of the song that ends up playing a big role in the plot. I dunno, naming it after the grandma in the English version seems a bit boring by comparison.
Normally im not a fan of changes, ESPECIALLY the ones on Pokemon & Yu-Gi-Oh, but i do like that they replaced the american flag to the WHOLE world globe. Showing that Buzz stands for EVERYBODY than the US, that he sees ALL as equals.
I actually changes make each version unique.
I will say we all hated dubs of anime that where ruined by 4kids entertainment and they dubed Pokémon
@@scottriddell3514 EXACTLY! 4kids are a known example of ruined animes.
@@dennisjansson6239 they changed stuff that was never known much outside Japan and to be fair the background music was the worst!
@@scottriddell3514 Yeah its sad that we didnt got to be presented to japanese cuisine & more things from that country. And yeah, most of the music that we heard wasnt so great, especially those that were added in some scenes that didnt have any music in the original version. The japanese music & intro is BETTER. WISH we got english, swedish & ALL the other languages versions of the jaoanese intros & credits.
Thumbnail is deceiving. Dislike.
Dang, this is cool!
5:52 I live in Poland and here Rochelle looks like in USA
I love what you do
In the Italian version of Cars Luigi and his assistant spoke in some strange gibberish instead of ... well ... the same language everyone else in the movie uses
Lol 😂
No, in realtà Luigi parla Romagnolo, perché lui viene dalla Romagna, difatti ha anche il negozio con tutte gomme della Ferrari. Marca fondata in Emilia-Romagna.
@@Samah_Morph_exe Yes, but in the original Luigi talks in English with a heavy italian accent, while Guido talks only in Italian. To translate the same level of understanding for Italian audience, they make Luigi talk in Italian with a heavy emilian accent, while Guido talks only in emilian dialect (BTW, Maranello is in Emilia, not in Romagna).
In Canada it was Zootopia at first and it was when I saw it in theaters, but they changed it. We still call it Zootopia though, otherwise it just sounds weird. But yeah here it's not commonly known as Zootropalis
2:26 OCEANIA WHAT IS THAT?!
I’m in nz but there’s no koalas here for news reporters
Same
I actually noticed the last one since I’m polish and have seen the polish version of shriek multiple times
The lyrics of "let it go" in german and english are, translated, a little bit different. We all probably know the english version, but if you translate the german lyrics into english, you get something this:
The snow glistens white on the mountains tonight
No traces can be seen
A lonely kingdom
And I'm the queen
The wind howls like the storm deep inside me
To control myself, I've tried
Don't let them in! don't let them see
who you are, no! That must never happen
You mustn't feel anything, don't show them
Your true self!
I let go, let go now
The power is limitless
I let go, let go now
And I slam the doors
It's time, now I am ready!
And a storm is coming
The cold is a part of me now
It's strange how small everything seems now
And the fears that were inside me
Don't come near me anymore
What I can all do
The strength within me drives me forward
What lies behind me is over, free at last!
I let go, let go now.
Now I'm finally ready!
I let go, let go now
But you don't see tears!
Here am I and I will stay here!
And a storm is coming
I feel this power, it is a part of me
It flows into my soul and into all the beauty here
Just one thought and the world will be made entirely of ice
I'm never going back, that's in the past!
I'm free, free at last
And feel reborn
I'm free, free at last
What happened is now over
Here I am in the bright light
And a storm is coming
The cold is a part of me now
I did that too for the swedish version
Snow has covered mountains and glaciers
It sparkles in its solitude no soul passes here
The storm brewing inside me seems to have turned
An isolated country and I am its regent
No one can see deep inside you
Don't let them see you through
Show nothing whatever you do
Everything is ruined
Break loose, break free
That time is over
Break loose, break free
Turn around if it's your lot
And never again should anyone say no
Release the storm you carry
A little snow has never bothered me
Yes, thought how a little distance makes everything seem small
And the fears that have ruled me are a fleeting memory
Now let's see how useful is the power that I have
Right or wrong, I decide
I am free
Break loose, break free
Now I see everything and understand
Break loose, break free
Not killing a single sheep
Here I stand and shall remain
Release the storm you carry
My power it flows through air and through ground
My soul the budding power wells up and makes me strong
My thought crystallizes imagination into ice
I leave everything that was reject directive
Break loose, break free
Paving the way let what happens happen
Break loose, break free
She who was here is no more
And here I stand a changed soul
Release the storm you carry
Snow has never bothered me
🤣🤣🤣
The Danish version is also very different from the english
The glistening snow covers the mountain tonight
No footprints show the way
A completely isolated rig
And its queen, it' me
And the howl of the wind mirrors the storm within
I have lost everything to an evil spell
Lock no one in, let no one see
Keep up the facade that you are committed to
Close each day, put the lid on
Now they have to get
Let it happen let them see
I show myself as I am
Let it happen let them see
I will never hide again'
Never again will I listen to them
Yes, it's storming, but
The icy mountain is my true home
When you are at a distance, everything becomes so small
And my life in the chains of fear is over, they must understand
It will be my big breakthrough
Now I let go, the line goes out
Farewell to the tyranny of duty
I'm free
Let it happen let them see
The powers that I have been given
Let it happen, it' over
With shame and bitter weeping
When I become who I am
Breaking the storm
I shake earth and sky as easily as nothing
Ice flowers spring out and gather into a closed ring
And like crystals a thought stands quite clear'
Can never return home, goodbye to what was
Let it happen let them see
Now the gloves are off
You will see ice and snow
I'm ready for a brand new day
And suddenly the light breaks out
Winter storm, come on
The icy mountain is my true home

I think it's very sweet of Disney to do little changes to make the tiny details hit closer to home with their international audiences. ♥
In Finland, it's common that characters' names may be changed, especially if a tale is old and has been translated long before Disney's version of the story (like Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty.) However, even if the story was Disney's original, names might be changed to better fit Finnish pronunciation. Princess Eilonwy from Black Cauldron is changed into Elena. Basically the whole cast from Micky Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy series have Finnish variants, the same goes for The Incredibles and Monsters Inc....
In Finnish dub, when it comes to stories or characters based in France, usually at least one character is imitating French accent. Examples of such characters are Finnish Colette (Ratatouille), Featherduster and Angelique (Beauty and the Beast + the Enchanted Christmas), Mole (Atlantis: the Lost Empire) and Charles de Girl (Valiant.) The French imitation may sound terrible to French ears though (our R's seriously don't run smoothly and it might sound closer to German than French R.) :D
In Denmark we have a polar bear…no idea why it’s not even related to our country
I live in Canada, I don't remember the zootropolis change at all.
I came from St. Louis and I’m speaking English and my actor Kenneth Branagh is British accent from another country in United Kingdom and that will be a another Disney movie
I live in au and rileys dad was still thinking about hockey.
In Portugal is still "COCO"
2:03 in Spain is hockey
In BR, the Zootopia anchor was actually a jaguar (onça pintada), although both animals have a very few similarities.
Chris Prat's Mario "Wahoo" vs the French & German version
“ caca “ 😂😂💀
It was so weird seeing "Moana" in pictures etc. instead of Vaiana.
Makes you almost want to go out and collect all country versions of 'Zootopia' for animated changes.
1:39 as a kid I thought that flag behind buzz was more a joke.
In Brazil, Mama Coco’s name is Ines.. Viva is a festiva expression like “hurray” and apears only in the title.
Not vay-ana. It's Vai-ana. Like a v-eye-ana
Finally I know why it’s called Vaiana Thank you
I'm from Latam, the brazil news reporter from Zootopia was for all countries (i think)
Honestly in many ways it's a good thing they changes some things to their country. However, it also makes me realise how easy things can be manipulated without even knowing.
I live in England and Moana has always been Moano aswell as the cars one I've always seen it just in the the American version!? Also i thought Zootopia and Zootropilous (or however you spell it) were different things! Only me!? 😢😂

I’m Canadian and I definitely remember seeing Zootopia in theatres, not Zootropolis.
In _Cars_ it’s a completely different actor, Jeremy Clarkson, the man behind _Top Gear_ and it’s awesome successor _The Grand Tour_ who recorded his lines in secret to make it a surprise for UK audiences.
I live on UK and have never heard of Zootropolis 🤷♂️ Zootopia is what I heard 👍
It was released as Zootropolis in the cinema in The UK and it's also called Zootropolis on The UK version of Disney+!
I still call it Zootopia though as I personally think it sounds much better 🙈🙈
Same in Canada. I've never heard of Zootropolis until this year, and it's called Zootopia on Disney+

Ok but why the fake thumbnail tho? Talk about clickbait!
That happens a lot CBR made a video about this topic and made a fake thumbnail showing an Italian version of Bo Peep where her hair is brown instead blonde despite the fact that she didn’t change in Italy.
IS THERE DRY BREAD FOR HORSE?
in Poland we also don't have "THE MUFFIN MEN"
Instead we have a joke about Czechoslovak animated series or maybe it was a movie.. where 2 men or well sprites live together ( I won't translate they're names allthough it can be translated as Gravel and Toadstool?? I guess) :
"Did you hear about the Muchomorek ?
Muchomorek ?
Yes ! Muchomorek
Ye Ye I know Muchomorek, the one from Żwirek right?
Żwirek flirts with Muchomorek
WITH MUCHOMOREK ?!
YES WITH MUCHOMOREK !
Żwirek flirts with Muchomorek..."
Also we changed "I bet you never seen a Donkey-fly" line with a old popular song in Poland "śpiewać każdy może" (anyone can sing)
"Anyone can Fly, sometimes bit better sometimes bit worse, BUT UNFORTUNETLY I HAVE TALENT !"
and It honestly became very popular line in Poland people from what I saw ( including me) quotes this fairly often and not just that
"siarką mi tu nie mydlij ! Siarka to przy tym perfuma" ( it can't rlly be translated but it baiscly means: Don't hide behind (or "lie about") "it beeing" a brimstone, compared to this brimstone is perfume) and honestly I can say for a lot of people that it became a saying that we quote regulary
safe to say Shrek had huge impact on Polish audience ^^
We have shrek 2 on dvd and we have the version where Jonathan Ross Voices Doris, the ugly stepsister
In Italy the kittens from the aristocrats are called Matisse, Minù and Bizet instead of Toulouse, Marie and Berlioz. Also J. Thomas O'Malley is called Romeo er mejo der colosseo (Romeo the best cat of the colosseum )
The only change I can think of is in Open Season, they changed the use of golf clubs for the Japanese.
For the harv bit im pretty sure clarkson voiced it
For me in my country we know and love Vaiana (Greece)
Ya sou andropos Elladas, Vaiana means flip-flops in my Portuguese language and it means Green Beans in my Spanish language.
