Hey Simon, thanks for the offer but I'd rather you figured out how to keep your fish so you can continue to learn, grow, and love this hobby! Have you tried to negotiate? 😊 Ask for just one 10 gallon 💪
I would ask for 1 fish tank. Honestly tanks should be 30 gallons I think for the best performance. I would try to hardline for at least 20 gallon mention dimensions. It's easier to screw up your tank water chemistry with smaller volumes, what I really mean is that it's easier for the poop and food waste to take over. I think also larger tanks are easier to maintain and cycle in a way. Fish are probably a lot less less stressed in bigger environments with larger quantities of the water there used too , and at the same time your reducing a lot of nitritates with all that water change. Plus if you have to change water like 50 percent, I think fish people agree larger the tank the safer it is for 50 percent water change.
@Kev, I was just about to start massive research on backup batteries, and I thought, "I wonder if Kev has already done this?" And look what I've found!!! You are just plain AWESOME.
@@KaveManAquatics will the Vortech backup work with other wave makers such as the Uniclife 2100 GPH Aquarium Wave Maker for 60-120 Gallon Fish Tanks (Very similar to the wave maker you suggested in your links to Amazon except for a 115 gallon tank.) I’m so glad that you have a link for me to get this. Grandma has a 40 gallon and a 36 gallon bow front tank. I can’t imagine looking into my tanks and my babies are dead.
I was thinking of getting a PC UPS to connect to my air stones. Never heard of the B-11 before. I may consider that for my smaller isolation tank. Thanks!
Sorry about the Fish kevin! Unfortunately i went the exact same thing as the same time, my country had power shortage due to the heatwave.. and i had no battery powered pump, i just kept waiting.. we all learn from our mistakes ! Lets hope we see your 450 full very soon !
Sorry about the Rays, Kev!!! You sharing about that though is such a huge help to the community!!! Any other tips that would be comparable to having something like the Echo Tech in lieu of a whole home generator?
What might come in handy is to use a computer battery backup. I have a few high-end backups that I use to put a few towers and big monitors. They can be used to power Ware makers and Airstones and depending on the filters, take that load on as well. I have a home generac for the home that kicks in after 45 seconds of lost power. the battery backup keeps the power courage to zero. Just a thought
Another good option Kev for air pumps is Aquarium Coop sells a single port and a dual port lithium battery/ ac powered air pumps while plugged in it charges the lithium battery and when power fails it just keeps running. Also they are variable output as well. I have them on all my tanks I love them and they are quiet and work very well. Also as you mentioned lot of different backup power methods that is an essential tool needed for the fish keeper.
@@bksmotherman yes sir that is correct I'm running sponge filters in each of my tanks using the aquarium coop pumps except in my big tank I'm running a 4 inch air stone with one of those pumps. It's just a matter of preference some folk like air and some folks don't.
Good advice, i think a lot of people probably don't think of these things until its too late.. so always good for a reminder. Id recommend with those cheaper B11 bubblers to double check they work like shown here, simulate the power outtage. Ive had one before that was defective from a wire not connected properly when manufactured... Didn't realize it until there was a power outtage.. had other backups so was fine.. but gotta check periodically that your backups are in good working order.
I saw the footage on the lost your stingrays, I'm glad you're getting giving up. I'm currently purchasing power backups for my tank, thank you for sharing
This is all such good advice! I live in a town prone to power outages when it gets too windy and i was thinking of getting a small battery backup for my tank and desktop computer for a while. I do have a battery-powered air pump, not the one that you showed though, but it helped me out during one of the power outages that lasted 3 hours
Aquarium Coop battery backup is the best way to go I feel. I have it providing tons of oxygenation to a 90, and it will keep going if power goes out. You can’t have enough bubbles imo.
I am planning on moving soon. Before I bring my fish to their new expanded basement fish room I'm going to spend the big bucks to get a whole house backup generator or more likely solar with battery back up. I know that's not in everyone's budget but I wouldn't feel comfortable setting up my dream fish room without it.
Have you looked into Computer Battery Backup connections? They are designed to provide continuous power but I do not know the length of runtime. It could possibly be an option that is less pricey since they have been used for decades.
Hi Thanks for your helpful information on this hobby, and my condolences for your 3 beautiful fish you lost, I sat up my fish tank with the help of your information, and so far, it was good, but I have a question that I couldn't find answers from local fish stores, My african cichlids' side fins base (fins joints to the body) turned bloddy red, until the last week it was only one fish, but now almost all of them have it. And some of their mouth turned reddish, too What can I do about that? Should I worry? Am I losing my tank? Thanks.
Kev, I almost got the Eco Tech Battery backup but I ended up getting a 1000 Watt UPS from my local Best Buy. Why? Because it is also powerful enough to keep the FX6 going for at least a couple of hours. If I only choose it to power the wave maker, it will keep it going for HOURS! (Our power outages usually last under two hours.) You just have to make sure that you plug in your emergency items into the "Surge with Battery backup" side of the UPS. The price was the same as the Eco Tech Battery Backup. This is just another option for the folks that want to consider battery backup. The tech at Best Buy loved that I was going to dedicate the UPS to an aquarium. He was also a fan of my "Total Reef" store. -Lady Tank Boss
A dedicated UPS is always the better option if you can keep it connected at all times. Remember, the ecotech battery backups main function is to operate on its own when power fails, like when you're away from home or asleep at night. If you can connect right to your UPS and have it do that too...excellent!
@@KaveManAquatics The UPS kicks on when the power fails, just like keeping your computer running when the power goes out, and lets you gracefully save your work and shut down. My concern is the air stone on the backup pump. If it's not used in months or longer but the air stone is sitting in the tank the whole time, won't the pores be clogged when the emergency hits?
I tried to buy but is not available for some time now... so, i bought and planted nice and strong oxigenators like Ceratophyllum Demersum... they buy me a couple of hours if...
Thats because it's hard to pin point a specific time. Some say after a few hours without oxygen the bacteria inside will die off. BUT, I've accidentally left my valves closed for over 12 hours and it had no effect when reopening the filters. No ammonia spike or bacterial bloom, which leads me to believe I had little to no beneficial bacteria loss. But thats all speculation 🤷♂️
From personal research, I've heard that after 8 hours you should add the canister filter media into the tank. But probably have a battery backup air pump on the tank at all times (like an aquarium co op one) hope this was helpful to you!
