In the first video, the battle that occurred and the emergence of the elder Primal Bahamut is what occurred at the end of the first release of FF14. The game initially was quite bad, and rather than just shut down the game, they rebooted the entire thing. Players who were subscribed at the time got to see the world almost end...and then when the game relaunched, they were among the survivors of five years ago. It was a great comeback for a failed game. If you haven't seen "Flames of Truth," it's a great video showing the Calamity.
Still think this is easily one of the most fascinating stories of redemption for a game. Solely because of how they worked that initial loss into both the promotion and actual story. Also amazing to see how strong the game is going considering how shaky its legs were initially!
@@theocan What makes it even more impressive is that it was assumed that the relaunch of the game was not going to be successful, so they were given the bare minimum budget to pull it off.....and they in fact, did just that. :)
@@HarukoZ001 Yeah, it's an absolute miracle that they not only managed to make an acceptable product with ARR (Because 'Acceptable' is the real term for it; It was AMAZING compared to 1.0, but still had a LOT of issues), but they managed to work through the issues and just constantly improve the game to it's current, massive state.

It's the 1.0 trailer the one where Derplander is a warrior is the 2.0 trailer that was shown when they took down the 1.0 servers before launching the 2.0 servers. Also you want "Answers", "Flames of Truth" shows what happens to a main 1.0 character and answers why that character isn't apart of 2.0 and beyond.

I once again appear to ramble in response to FFXIV content. Final Fantasy as a whole often tends to be a lot more technologically advanced than people might think looking from the outside, even in the very first game one of the dungeons was a full on space station, and airships have been part of the franchise's identity since if not the first game (my memory is foggy), than for sure the second onward. Blending magic and technology to create magitech is mostly in reference to FF6 and FF10, but the former is one of the most well known/well-regarded, so it makes sense they'd take inspiration from that. The story in Final Fantasy games are very self-contained, there's nods and references you won't get if you haven't played the earlier games in the series, but the world and lore is written to stand on its own two legs in spite of that, so you wouldn't miss anything really by not playing the older games if you ended up doing a Journey for this one. (General rule of thumb, actual sequels will have a title after the number, like Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, or Final Fantasy X-2) At the start of A Realm Reborn, things are kinda middle-ages tech-wise in Eorzea, the continent we start in, but other countries like the antagonist empire that you saw have advanced drastically to be close to a near-modern society thanks to what amounts to Magic Oil called Ceruleum that kicked off a technological revolution, and even Eorzea is starting to modernize when we begin the story. This bleeds over quite a bit as the story keeps going, by the time of Endwalker a lot of aspects of the game start feeling surprisingly technological and modern in contrast to the still very high-fantasy feeling world around it, even in said continent (my boyfriend owns a house in-game and it looks like a modern day home at this point with all the furniture they've released). The black and purple super high-tech society you saw in the Dawntrail one though... that's kind of a drastic extenuating circumstance and way too big a spoiler and way too recent to talk about freely. I know I've mentioned it before, but if you ever wanted to peek a bit more into FFXIV, one of the funnest videos to watch would be the Dawntrail Job Action trailer, which gives you the names of all of the playable combat jobs and gives a short demonstration of their abilities as-of Dawntrail.
There was definitely an airship in the first game. And robots. And lasers. And dragons. And elves. And magic. And pirates! And so many other things. A fun blend of high tech and magic (hence inventing the term Magitek) has always been the hallmark of the series.
One of my favorite things about this game is how much new lore they put into the game, along with drawing directly from all of the previous Final Fantasy games in the entire franchise (eg. Magitek refers to FF6's Magitek). The music, the stories, the characters, there's so much to take in, and it's no surprise how well its done since the game was remade from the ground up after 1.0
That's one of the worst parts, since they badly copy/paste things and distort them. Fitting, since the story is about some single person killing a whole planet and distorting it and you are forced to cheer and mass murder for that...
This game alone holds a decade worth of legacy. Played this throughout college all the way to my late 20's. Quit playing after endwalker but its an mmo experience I remember fondly. Floor tank best class.
You know, the game has an extremely generous free trial where you can play all the way to the end of Stormblood (so that means all of A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, and Stormblood content) with some social restrictions. It's a ton of reading but well worth it, especially for ftee
Garlemald was not out of nowhere, they developed it (with outside help), since their race was not capable of using magic, what led to them being oppressed, enslaved or murdered by the other races, until they were able to fight back. But of course FF14 writing is absolute garbage, so in the end you indeed just get technology everywhere, while Garlamald - a continent sized nations - just falls apart off screen, because Square is as lazy as greedy and just milks this game since Stormblood.
@@jamcalx it is definitely not out of nowhere, the games explains their origins. Even in FFXIV. It gives you an elaborate explanation on why there seems to be a generation gap between technology. Remember this game is multirace, multi world and multi universe.

The Shaodwbringers and Endwalkers still give me chills. The song in the Endwalker one makes me cry every time. Those expansions were peak story telling. Would love to see you both react to the entire story.
You are right in that the lion lady in the last trailer is something not seen before in the other story trailers you have watched. Final Fantasy started with 5 playable races, each with two physically distinct subraces and male and female models for each. Hyur (human), Miqo'te (catfolk), Elezen (elves), Lalafell (halflings, sorta), and Roegadyn (half-giant, sorta). So players had 20 different options to pick from and then customize to their heart's content. The game has introduced new races as well as classes along with each expansion. Male and female Au'ra (half-dragonfolk) came in Stormblood, female Viera (bunny folk) and male Hrothgar (lion-people) came in Shadowbringers, male Viera came in Endwalker, and finally the long awaited female Hrothgar released in Dawntrail. The lion lady (Wuk Lamat) was the first female Hrothgar we had actually seen since the game started. The Dawntrail expansion introduced the ability to play as one, as well as having a number of them as NPCs in the new land we were exploring. While there are tons of other races in the game, and they regularly add NPC races each expansion, the devs have said they will likely not be making any additional playable ones. Every time they add a race, they have to add 4 versions of it (male and female in each of the two subraces) and make sure all the past and future equipment, fashion items, animations, emotes, mounts, and cutscenes work with the 4 new models. Each additional race just multiplies their workload whenever they need to add new things too. So we are probably not going to get any new ones for quite a while, if at all. But what is available now really covers a wide range of player preferences while making the world feel diverse and alive. Edit: Fixed the typos. Left the factual error.
Quick corretion, the Au'ra were introduced and playable in Heavensward. Stormblood is where we got to learn more about their culture as it wasn't really a focus point in Heavensward.
@@Scarabswarm They're also not really dragonfolk, just lizards, with male Raen even having blue tongues like skinks! Their appearance caused Au'ra refugees in and around Coerthas and Ishgard to be massacred on sight as they were *mistaken* for Dravanians.
@TwiceBornStar Oh, absolutely, but I am trying to relate the imagery to an unfamiliar audience rather than going in-depth into their lore. Edit: Calling them dragonfolk establishes the impression to the player that the game then purposefully takes time to correct. Sort of how the NPCs calling the neutral and hostile factions "Beast tribes" in ARR establishes the dehumanization that the game then slowly reforms over time. Unreliable narrators, prejudices that change, superstitions that get debunked; it all comes together to build a world that feels alive as it evolves over time.
Game is garbage. Square is miling it since Stormblood, the 2nd expansion. The story is disgusting, you are pretty much playing an as mind- as voiceless soldier who follows the orders of his or her Führer, who calls herself a godess, but is just a monster that not only committed planeater genocide, but after that distorted all life to make it what she wants it to be, dooming it to die (not that this will ever play any role), torturing it over 10.000 years with the plan that this will create that one supersoldier (the player char) with just random plot armor, not really actually powerful, to beat something that could have been easily beaten by the real people. And while this might even sound intersting: it's not, because this is not the story, the story is simply that you are the invincible plot armor Mary Sue who easily kills everything in its path, not because you are powerful, but because that everything is never ever doing anything to just stop you (what they could, without any problem). Since Stormblood they don't even care anymore to let the 'good guys' make up any kind of stupid plan, it's always just: we got there and beat the shit out of whatever is there, because we know we got plot armor, so we will win anyway, why waste time with anything else? Only halfway acceptable story was in HW - but in the end you still just solve it via killing the other sides leader, justified that while his anger was just, he of course went insane over it, so you just had to do it that way. And again: that was the good writing... everything after that was WAY worse. But FF14 got a fanatic fancrowd, who will defend this shit to the end.
@@MoltenUprisingMK ignore Miriam, they've had a bee in their bonnet on almost every positive comment. It is a genuinely great game and a fantastic MMO, hence why it's stood its own against WoW. Sure the story drops at times but overall, the writing is pretty damn good.
Id say give it a shot, ignoring the whole free trial copypasta, the free trial lets you get to the level 70 content. Currently the cap is 100 so you can basically see 2/3s of the game and 1/2 of the current full story. The only thing the free trial restrict is no friends list, no FC (guilds), no marketboard, and no Party Finder (but this is mainly used at endgame so its not really a hamper). With updates the game can basically be played as a solo adventure as well. It does start kinda slow though but one you hit level ~30 and get jobs it starts opening up bit by bit. I'd say give it a shot, its not everyones cup of tea, but hey since its free at most you just waste some hours.
You can play for free up to level 70, through the base game and the first two expansions. Squeenix is very generous with the free 'trial' in this game.
Believe y'all would thoroughly enjoy the journey through the game and story. Plus there are tons and tons of folks who'd happily walk along side you both to help guide and clarify when asked. I know you probably have full plates with other content, but just food for thought. Love y'alls vids and reactions. 💜
The lion people racre is called Hrothgar and was added in Shadowbringers but as a male only race, alongside a female only race called Viera. Players wanted male Viera and Female Hrothgar, so the devs started working on adding them and the male Viera were ready for Endwalker's launch, while the femal Hrothgar were still a work in progress and only appeared in Dawntrail. Viera are originally a race from Final Fantasy 12 and Hrothgar are based on the Ronso from Final Fantasy 10
love this series, love this game. Probably my 2nd or 3rd fav of the Final Fantasies😊 It's funny you mention Gaius to be final fantasy Darth Vader, because it reminded me how extremely Star Wars FFXII is in character tropes and music. There's really no good video to react for it, but i figured I'd mention it.

Imagine how the game would be with that CGI-tech in all the in-game cutscenes as well. :D But of course...that would be not just too expensive, but also too difficult to do, not to mention the ammount of data-power it would require. The cinematics alone are good enough. :)
I would say if you ever want to get into 14, start with the free trial. It is very generous. If you are a avid novel readers, treat 14 just like that with treating each expansion as another book in a series that is Final Fantasy 14.
Not sure if anyone's mentioned it, but you guys were wondering how the world recovered quickly after only a five year period. The world and all things, living and not living, are made from the lifeforce (what they call aether) of the star (what we would call the planet). Bahamut in particular was created by the prayers of the Dragon race in revenge for what happened to them a long time ago. He was made of a *massive* amount of aether. Upon his destruction, all of that aether was returned to the land, reforming it. Hence the name A Realm Reborn for the rerelease of the game.
Good call using Captions (the music was indeed overflowing the speech-audio). The Auto-Generated type is a good secondary option, if the best one ("Captions: English or USA/American") is not available for a vid. Because the former strives keeping up when the speech goes too fast or sounds unclear, resulting in some words being subtitled wrong or even missed completely. The latter makes the script in finished lines, approx. two-three rows per time displayed, and is much more accurate if not 100%. The Caption-link on the vid might just choose between those two by random, so it's best going to the Settings one and pick the type there. ^_^
"Final Fantasy's Darth Vader" was actually in FFIV, where main villain Golbez is revealed at the end to be main character Cecil's older brother under the control of a monster of hate and Darkness.
"That one was pretty heavy" - Square Enix is so good in hyping up an expansion and the story even for ppl who never played it xD The Expansion you called "pretty heavy" was quite literally about the end of the world, the universe and anything we know...so yeah it was pretty heavy but so sooo good!
FFXIV is like a serial novel/ television/ anime series story all in one package represented in a video game format . It pays homage to the various games in the franchise but isn't beholden to them narratively speaking nor does it rip off them . You mentioned how out of place the tech is particularly in the last one , well despite the reputation of being high fantasy and often steampunk-ish , the franchise has on whole , believe it or not is not entirely accurate, with the some having a very cyberpunk or high tech aesthetic or settings , with FF7 , FF15 and even the very first entry FF1 having a heavy technological setting. I've said before to you guys that these cinematic and launch trailers will never give you the clarity about the story as a whole that you seem to want, especially when you don't watch the 5 patch trailers in between the expansions, you will only be confused and get one-third of the context of the events on screen, if you really are interested, play the free trial which goes up to Stormblood expansion now and no restrictions on play up to level 70 . Cause believe me there is a market for watch people play FFXIV for the first time, watched plenty of people make reaction videos about the game

I really enjoyed the vid peeps!! I feel to get even somewhat better context of this series world and locations, you should also watch the update trailers as well. For example, A Realm Reborn is 2.0, you should also watch 2.1,2.2,2.3,2.4,2.5 which all leads to the next big expansion, Heavensward labled, 3.0 and then so on. It will give you guys a somewhat better appreciation. Of course, always do what you can.😁👍 Also, if you guys want to know how everyone survived that first cataclysmic event during A REALM REBORN, you guys should DEFINITELY watch, FFXIV- FLAMES of TRUTH. If you can, since I doubt you both have the time or energy to devote to a playthrough of FF14, I'd recommend you try and find someone doing a playthrough. The overall story for FF14 is just... So good. Some of the best writing I've seen in a videogame, and appropriate for one of the most influential and important franchises in gaming history.

The dev team actually released some interesting tidbits of information back in April, including: 159 hours of Cutscenes 4917 minutes of Music (And Soken is both a genius and a madman with his talent) These numbers don't include the most-recent expansion, which added something like 21 hours of cutscenes, and I have no clue how much more music.
Endwalker ended the Zodiark Hydaelyn Era. The lion lady is a new playable race. In Dawntrail we visit Tural/The New World after spending the last 10 years in the three great continent and adjacent islands and that’s where they live. If you liked the dragons there’s a good chance (it has been hinted and it is the final large continent that we have yet to visit) the next expansion will take us to Merycidia, the home of the dragons in our world. This new saga looks like it will take us to the reflections of our planet (think of them as parallel realities created as a result of the Zodiark/Hydelyn conflict). Many of them have not suffered the relentless attacks and resets our planet has and are therefore much more magically and technologically advanced than we are so it should be a fun (hopefully) next 10 Years.

People that don't play FF games, let alone FF-XIV, will often have a bit of a... confusion, because there's a bit of a generalized cultural concept surrounding the definition of the word "Fantasy" in English. When most people in the west hear "Fantasy", they automatically think: "Oh, so like Lord of the Rings"? It (I'm generalizing here!) tends to be very cut & dry: Fantasy = Knights, castles, dragons, wizards, etc. However, In the case of many Japanese RPG's, and specifically Final Fantasy meta-franchise; there has ALWAYS been an element of sci-fi mixed with fantasy, going all the way back the very first game. Robots, airships, lost civilizations, technology so advanced as to appear to be magic; these are all long-running staples of the FF series of games. XIV in particular takes this a step further: On the outset it seems to be a more "traditional" western fantasy game. But it's a bait & switch: as you play through the story, it very clearly becomes apparent that XIV is closer to a post-apocalyptic science-fantasy with some high-gothic elements. Technology & magic exist comfortably side by side: computers, guns, trains, & cars share space with alchemy, wizards, & talking bird people. Even the Dragons in XIV are different: they don't horde treasure or eat dwarves: they're actually ALIENS, refugees from across the gulf of space who are so long-lived as to have a completely different concept of time. XIV itself is a melting-pot of the greater meta-series: most of it's content is a remix of things from other games, a huge love-letter to the franchise as a whole. For example Dawntrail, the newest expansion, pulls the majority of it's references from FF-6, and FF-9, as well as FF-11's 2nd expansion. Absolutely nobody can blame you both for being a little lost when watching these: they're not really created with the general public in mind. They're there for people that have all the story-beats and context. Without that, it becomes the equivalent of walking into the last 10 minutes of a two-part film series and asking "what's the vibe here?"

Magitek is a development of the Garleans, as they are... not 'human', per se. They have a distinct lack of connection with aether, the magical energy that suffuses the world and that all other races on the planet can access, and thus, they have no mages. They have a third eye (it doesn't look like an ACTUAL eye, it's more like a pearl in the middle of their forehead) that grants them superior spatial awareness, so they're VERY good at aiming and precision work, and it also allows them to detect magic. So they put their craftsmen to work creating magitek devices that use Aether crystals to create magic-like effects, and since they can mass produce these things (rather than training magic wielders over time like others do), they became very powerful very quickly and set out to conquer the world.
These were so good, apart from the little.....blunder...SE did in the S.bringer one, spoiling a major plot revealed in that story-patch, in the trailer itself. :)
Whats crazy, originally FF14 gameplay was so bad thst they did a huge reset on it, changing the mechanics, restarting the game to a new point so everything that was in the base is now in the data log. Game got better but imagine someone who spent weeks getting all the best gear in 1.0
if guys ever want to play FFXIV. we always tell new players. the Reborn is bit slow and kinda boring on the story line. because they were trying to make up from the messy story line. they had for 1.0 but once get past reborn. the story really starts take off.
The individuals calling people mortals are not gods, they are fragments of the people that used to inhabit the planet. In their original forms they were immortal and could not die of age. They're goal is to bring back their old world at all costs and have 0 qualms killing everyone else to do it. 15:50 he calls her Kin Slayer which is basically "You're a murder of your people."
The old world is the real world. What exists now is the distorting of this world, done by a single, ultra fascistic super N@zi, who genocide the whole planet for no reason and cut it in to pieces (however this shall even be possible). All those fragments were of course bleeding out and falling apart, while the distorted life was ill, driven by violence, constantly dying just to be reborn, all for the goal of that one person to create one super soldier (the player char - even thoug the player car does not really have any kind of power, it's just random plot armor with no explanation, Echo and Blessing of Light do pretty much shit, nor do the ever waste a single sentence on the player char at least trying to learn about or master it somehow, it's lazy as f) to beat a being the real life could have easily defeated without much problems. The game is simply so absolutel disgusting to whitewash all that. It's like playing Wolfenstein, but you have to play as a loyal to the Reich soldier and the whole story is about, how those who oppose the Reich are the bad guys and just have to kill them, else your glorious Reich would be gone. "Killing everyone" isn't even true, since that fascistic Führer you follow is constanlty killing everyone all the time and the shards are doome to fail anyway. What those fighting against this and you are doing is to save people and unite them back with the source and heal their souls - what is by the way the actual reason the player char got more powerful here and there, because the "bad guys" healed the planet by reuniting the fragments with it. Hell, plan B of your genocide goddess was to just run away and let everyone die and all those 10.000 years it was the "oh so evil bad god" that actually protected everyone, even after also being distorted. And while you COULD write such a sick story, they didn't. In the whole story, the player char = the tool of that absolute evil 'goddes' are sold as the good one, just as your absolute evil 'goddess'.

The story in Final Fantasy games are very self-contained, there's nods and references you won't get if you haven't played the earlier games in the series, but the world and lore is written to stand on its own two legs in spite of that, so you wouldn't miss anything really by not playing the older games if you ended up doing a Journey for this one. (General rule of thumb, actual sequels will have a title after the number, like Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, or Final Fantasy X-2)
At the start of A Realm Reborn, things are kinda middle-ages tech-wise in Eorzea, the continent we start in, but other countries like the antagonist empire that you saw have advanced drastically to be close to a near-modern society thanks to what amounts to Magic Oil called Ceruleum that kicked off a technological revolution, and even Eorzea is starting to modernize when we begin the story. This bleeds over quite a bit as the story keeps going, by the time of Endwalker a lot of aspects of the game start feeling surprisingly technological and modern in contrast to the still very high-fantasy feeling world around it, even in said continent (my boyfriend owns a house in-game and it looks like a modern day home at this point with all the furniture they've released). The black and purple super high-tech society you saw in the Dawntrail one though... that's kind of a drastic extenuating circumstance and way too big a spoiler and way too recent to talk about freely.
I know I've mentioned it before, but if you ever wanted to peek a bit more into FFXIV, one of the funnest videos to watch would be the Dawntrail Job Action trailer, which gives you the names of all of the playable combat jobs and gives a short demonstration of their abilities as-of Dawntrail.

There was definitely an airship in the first game. And robots. And lasers. And dragons. And elves. And magic. And pirates! And so many other things. A fun blend of high tech and magic (hence inventing the term Magitek) has always been the hallmark of the series.

One of my favorite things about this game is how much new lore they put into the game, along with drawing directly from all of the previous Final Fantasy games in the entire franchise (eg. Magitek refers to FF6's Magitek). The music, the stories, the characters, there's so much to take in, and it's no surprise how well its done since the game was remade from the ground up after 1.0
That's one of the worst parts, since they badly copy/paste things and distort them. Fitting, since the story is about some single person killing a whole planet and distorting it and you are forced to cheer and mass murder for that...

This game alone holds a decade worth of legacy. Played this throughout college all the way to my late 20's. Quit playing after endwalker but its an mmo experience I remember fondly. Floor tank best class.

You know, the game has an extremely generous free trial where you can play all the way to the end of Stormblood (so that means all of A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, and Stormblood content) with some social restrictions. It's a ton of reading but well worth it, especially for ftee
Final Fantasy ALWAYS has advanced technology out of nowhere. 😂 They throw the kitchen sink in often.
Garlemald was not out of nowhere, they developed it (with outside help), since their race was not capable of using magic, what led to them being oppressed, enslaved or murdered by the other races, until they were able to fight back.
But of course FF14 writing is absolute garbage, so in the end you indeed just get technology everywhere, while Garlamald - a continent sized nations - just falls apart off screen, because Square is as lazy as greedy and just milks this game since Stormblood.
Aye, it always amuses me when people think FF has always been a LOTR-style of fantasy.

You are right in that the lion lady in the last trailer is something not seen before in the other story trailers you have watched.
Final Fantasy started with 5 playable races, each with two physically distinct subraces and male and female models for each. Hyur (human), Miqo'te (catfolk), Elezen (elves), Lalafell (halflings, sorta), and Roegadyn (half-giant, sorta). So players had 20 different options to pick from and then customize to their heart's content.
The game has introduced new races as well as classes along with each expansion. Male and female Au'ra (half-dragonfolk) came in Stormblood, female Viera (bunny folk) and male Hrothgar (lion-people) came in Shadowbringers, male Viera came in Endwalker, and finally the long awaited female Hrothgar released in Dawntrail.
The lion lady (Wuk Lamat) was the first female Hrothgar we had actually seen since the game started. The Dawntrail expansion introduced the ability to play as one, as well as having a number of them as NPCs in the new land we were exploring.
While there are tons of other races in the game, and they regularly add NPC races each expansion, the devs have said they will likely not be making any additional playable ones. Every time they add a race, they have to add 4 versions of it (male and female in each of the two subraces) and make sure all the past and future equipment, fashion items, animations, emotes, mounts, and cutscenes work with the 4 new models. Each additional race just multiplies their workload whenever they need to add new things too. So we are probably not going to get any new ones for quite a while, if at all. But what is available now really covers a wide range of player preferences while making the world feel diverse and alive.

Quick corretion, the Au'ra were introduced and playable in Heavensward. Stormblood is where we got to learn more about their culture as it wasn't really a focus point in Heavensward.

Edit: Calling them dragonfolk establishes the impression to the player that the game then purposefully takes time to correct.
Sort of how the NPCs calling the neutral and hostile factions "Beast tribes" in ARR establishes the dehumanization that the game then slowly reforms over time. Unreliable narrators, prejudices that change, superstitions that get debunked; it all comes together to build a world that feels alive as it evolves over time.

While I'm not really an FF player, I'll admit this game looks fucking sweet. I feel an overwhelming urge to give it a try.

Unlike most mmo’s this game gives you plenty of breathing room to take your time. It’s designed for breaks.
Game is garbage. Square is miling it since Stormblood, the 2nd expansion.
The story is disgusting, you are pretty much playing an as mind- as voiceless soldier who follows the orders of his or her Führer, who calls herself a godess, but is just a monster that not only committed planeater genocide, but after that distorted all life to make it what she wants it to be, dooming it to die (not that this will ever play any role), torturing it over 10.000 years with the plan that this will create that one supersoldier (the player char) with just random plot armor, not really actually powerful, to beat something that could have been easily beaten by the real people.
And while this might even sound intersting: it's not, because this is not the story, the story is simply that you are the invincible plot armor Mary Sue who easily kills everything in its path, not because you are powerful, but because that everything is never ever doing anything to just stop you (what they could, without any problem).
Since Stormblood they don't even care anymore to let the 'good guys' make up any kind of stupid plan, it's always just: we got there and beat the shit out of whatever is there, because we know we got plot armor, so we will win anyway, why waste time with anything else?
Only halfway acceptable story was in HW - but in the end you still just solve it via killing the other sides leader, justified that while his anger was just, he of course went insane over it, so you just had to do it that way.
And again: that was the good writing... everything after that was WAY worse.
But FF14 got a fanatic fancrowd, who will defend this shit to the end.

It is a genuinely great game and a fantastic MMO, hence why it's stood its own against WoW. Sure the story drops at times but overall, the writing is pretty damn good.
Id say give it a shot, ignoring the whole free trial copypasta, the free trial lets you get to the level 70 content. Currently the cap is 100 so you can basically see 2/3s of the game and 1/2 of the current full story. The only thing the free trial restrict is no friends list, no FC (guilds), no marketboard, and no Party Finder (but this is mainly used at endgame so its not really a hamper). With updates the game can basically be played as a solo adventure as well. It does start kinda slow though but one you hit level ~30 and get jobs it starts opening up bit by bit.
I'd say give it a shot, its not everyones cup of tea, but hey since its free at most you just waste some hours.
If you guys ever end up trying the free trial of this game, I'd absolutely watch it!

You can play for free up to level 70, through the base game and the first two expansions. Squeenix is very generous with the free 'trial' in this game.

The lion people racre is called Hrothgar and was added in Shadowbringers but as a male only race, alongside a female only race called Viera.
Players wanted male Viera and Female Hrothgar, so the devs started working on adding them and the male Viera were ready for Endwalker's launch, while the femal Hrothgar were still a work in progress and only appeared in Dawntrail. Viera are originally a race from Final Fantasy 12 and Hrothgar are based on the Ronso from Final Fantasy 10

It's funny you mention Gaius to be final fantasy Darth Vader, because it reminded me how extremely Star Wars FFXII is in character tropes and music. There's really no good video to react for it, but i figured I'd mention it.

Imagine how the game would be with that CGI-tech in all the in-game cutscenes as well. :D But of course...that would be not just too expensive, but also too difficult to do, not to mention the ammount of data-power it would require. The cinematics alone are good enough. :)

I would say if you ever want to get into 14, start with the free trial. It is very generous. If you are a avid novel readers, treat 14 just like that with treating each expansion as another book in a series that is Final Fantasy 14.
Not sure if anyone's mentioned it, but you guys were wondering how the world recovered quickly after only a five year period.
The world and all things, living and not living, are made from the lifeforce (what they call aether) of the star (what we would call the planet). Bahamut in particular was created by the prayers of the Dragon race in revenge for what happened to them a long time ago. He was made of a *massive* amount of aether. Upon his destruction, all of that aether was returned to the land, reforming it. Hence the name A Realm Reborn for the rerelease of the game.
So uh...having finished DT msq, i can safely say that the "Bitch, please," at the end was very apt.

Good call using Captions (the music was indeed overflowing the speech-audio). The Auto-Generated type is a good secondary option, if the best one ("Captions: English or USA/American") is not available for a vid. Because the former strives keeping up when the speech goes too fast or sounds unclear, resulting in some words being subtitled wrong or even missed completely. The latter makes the script in finished lines, approx. two-three rows per time displayed, and is much more accurate if not 100%. The Caption-link on the vid might just choose between those two by random, so it's best going to the Settings one and pick the type there. ^_^
"Final Fantasy's Darth Vader" was actually in FFIV, where main villain Golbez is revealed at the end to be main character Cecil's older brother under the control of a monster of hate and Darkness.
"That one was pretty heavy" - Square Enix is so good in hyping up an expansion and the story even for ppl who never played it xD The Expansion you called "pretty heavy" was quite literally about the end of the world, the universe and anything we know...so yeah it was pretty heavy but so sooo good!

FFXIV is like a serial novel/ television/ anime series story all in one package represented in a video game format .
It pays homage to the various games in the franchise but isn't beholden to them narratively speaking nor does it rip off them .
You mentioned how out of place the tech is particularly in the last one , well despite the reputation of being high fantasy and often steampunk-ish , the franchise has on whole , believe it or not is not entirely accurate, with the some having a very cyberpunk or high tech aesthetic or settings , with FF7 , FF15 and even the very first entry FF1 having a heavy technological setting.
I've said before to you guys that these cinematic and launch trailers will never give you the clarity about the story as a whole that you seem to want, especially when you don't watch the 5 patch trailers in between the expansions, you will only be confused and get one-third of the context of the events on screen, if you really are interested, play the free trial which goes up to Stormblood expansion now and no restrictions on play up to level 70 .
Cause believe me there is a market for watch people play FFXIV for the first time, watched plenty of people make reaction videos about the game

I really enjoyed the vid peeps!! I feel to get even somewhat better context of this series world and locations, you should also watch the update trailers as well. For example, A Realm Reborn is 2.0, you should also watch 2.1,2.2,2.3,2.4,2.5 which all leads to the next big expansion, Heavensward labled, 3.0 and then so on. It will give you guys a somewhat better appreciation. Of course, always do what you can.😁👍 Also, if you guys want to know how everyone survived that first cataclysmic event during A REALM REBORN, you guys should DEFINITELY watch, FFXIV- FLAMES of TRUTH. It's 8 minutes long.

If you can, since I doubt you both have the time or energy to devote to a playthrough of FF14, I'd recommend you try and find someone doing a playthrough. The overall story for FF14 is just... So good. Some of the best writing I've seen in a videogame, and appropriate for one of the most influential and important franchises in gaming history.

159 hours of Cutscenes
4917 minutes of Music (And Soken is both a genius and a madman with his talent)
These numbers don't include the most-recent expansion, which added something like 21 hours of cutscenes, and I have no clue how much more music.
Endwalker ended the Zodiark Hydaelyn Era. The lion lady is a new playable race. In Dawntrail we visit Tural/The New World after spending the last 10 years in the three great continent and adjacent islands and that’s where they live.
If you liked the dragons there’s a good chance (it has been hinted and it is the final large continent that we have yet to visit) the next expansion will take us to Merycidia, the home of the dragons in our world. This new saga looks like it will take us to the reflections of our planet (think of them as parallel realities created as a result of the Zodiark/Hydelyn conflict). Many of them have not suffered the relentless attacks and resets our planet has and are therefore much more magically and technologically advanced than we are so it should be a fun (hopefully) next 10
Years.

People that don't play FF games, let alone FF-XIV, will often have a bit of a... confusion, because there's a bit of a generalized cultural concept surrounding the definition of the word "Fantasy" in English. When most people in the west hear "Fantasy", they automatically think: "Oh, so like Lord of the Rings"?
It (I'm generalizing here!) tends to be very cut & dry: Fantasy = Knights, castles, dragons, wizards, etc.
However, In the case of many Japanese RPG's, and specifically Final Fantasy meta-franchise; there has ALWAYS been an element of sci-fi mixed with fantasy, going all the way back the very first game. Robots, airships, lost civilizations, technology so advanced as to appear to be magic; these are all long-running staples of the FF series of games. XIV in particular takes this a step further: On the outset it seems to be a more "traditional" western fantasy game. But it's a bait & switch: as you play through the story, it very clearly becomes apparent that XIV is closer to a post-apocalyptic science-fantasy with some high-gothic elements.
Technology & magic exist comfortably side by side: computers, guns, trains, & cars share space with alchemy, wizards, & talking bird people. Even the Dragons in XIV are different: they don't horde treasure or eat dwarves: they're actually ALIENS, refugees from across the gulf of space who are so long-lived as to have a completely different concept of time. XIV itself is a melting-pot of the greater meta-series: most of it's content is a remix of things from other games, a huge love-letter to the franchise as a whole. For example Dawntrail, the newest expansion, pulls the majority of it's references from FF-6, and FF-9, as well as FF-11's 2nd expansion.
Absolutely nobody can blame you both for being a little lost when watching these: they're not really created with the general public in mind. They're there for people that have all the story-beats and context. Without that, it becomes the equivalent of walking into the last 10 minutes of a two-part film series and asking "what's the vibe here?"

Magitek is a development of the Garleans, as they are... not 'human', per se. They have a distinct lack of connection with aether, the magical energy that suffuses the world and that all other races on the planet can access, and thus, they have no mages. They have a third eye (it doesn't look like an ACTUAL eye, it's more like a pearl in the middle of their forehead) that grants them superior spatial awareness, so they're VERY good at aiming and precision work, and it also allows them to detect magic.
So they put their craftsmen to work creating magitek devices that use Aether crystals to create magic-like effects, and since they can mass produce these things (rather than training magic wielders over time like others do), they became very powerful very quickly and set out to conquer the world.
'another dickhead god' sums up final fantasy as a series pretty well haha

Whats crazy, originally FF14 gameplay was so bad thst they did a huge reset on it, changing the mechanics, restarting the game to a new point so everything that was in the base is now in the data log. Game got better but imagine someone who spent weeks getting all the best gear in 1.0

if guys ever want to play FFXIV. we always tell new players. the Reborn is bit slow and kinda boring on the story line. because they were trying to make up from the messy story line. they had for 1.0 but once get past reborn. the story really starts take off.
The individuals calling people mortals are not gods, they are fragments of the people that used to inhabit the planet. In their original forms they were immortal and could not die of age. They're goal is to bring back their old world at all costs and have 0 qualms killing everyone else to do it.

The old world is the real world.
What exists now is the distorting of this world, done by a single, ultra fascistic super N@zi, who genocide the whole planet for no reason and cut it in to pieces (however this shall even be possible).
All those fragments were of course bleeding out and falling apart, while the distorted life was ill, driven by violence, constantly dying just to be reborn, all for the goal of that one person to create one super soldier (the player char - even thoug the player car does not really have any kind of power, it's just random plot armor with no explanation, Echo and Blessing of Light do pretty much shit, nor do the ever waste a single sentence on the player char at least trying to learn about or master it somehow, it's lazy as f) to beat a being the real life could have easily defeated without much problems.
The game is simply so absolutel disgusting to whitewash all that.
It's like playing Wolfenstein, but you have to play as a loyal to the Reich soldier and the whole story is about, how those who oppose the Reich are the bad guys and just have to kill them, else your glorious Reich would be gone.
"Killing everyone" isn't even true, since that fascistic Führer you follow is constanlty killing everyone all the time and the shards are doome to fail anyway. What those fighting against this and you are doing is to save people and unite them back with the source and heal their souls - what is by the way the actual reason the player char got more powerful here and there, because the "bad guys" healed the planet by reuniting the fragments with it.
Hell, plan B of your genocide goddess was to just run away and let everyone die and all those 10.000 years it was the "oh so evil bad god" that actually protected everyone, even after also being distorted.
And while you COULD write such a sick story, they didn't. In the whole story, the player char = the tool of that absolute evil 'goddes' are sold as the good one, just as your absolute evil 'goddess'.
