So I'm an Audi mechanic. They took one of these in on trade a couple years ago with 56,220 miles for 16k. I bought it for $18,760. I welded new end tanks on a 4 inch thick mishimoto intercooler core. It was from my sn95 mustang drift car before I went n/a with a 400ci small block ford sprint car engine that makes 840hp. Put larger injectors in, upgraded pressure pump, fiddled with the waste gates, built my own aluminum charge piping and exhaust, tuned it on my buddies dyno with the help of one of my buddies in Deutschland, we got her up to 720 wheel hp and 1204 lb ft. It's a menace to society to be honest. I live in Reno, Nevada so whoever said we didn't get them here is just flat out incorrect. Another thing, I've obviously had the tcu flashed as well but I've got over 100,000 miles and haven't had a single problem.
The Volkswagen Group had the most varied lineup of engines back in the 2000s for both diesel and petrol cars: from inline 3, 4 and 5 cylinder engines to V6, V8, V10 and V12 engines to VR5 and VR6 engines to W8, W12 and W16 engines. There was even a secret prototype W10 engine that was tested in a BMW M5. The only engine configuration they didn't make was an inline 6 cylinder engine because it was not going to fit in their FWD and AWD cars due to the way they package their engines and their AWD systems that require a transaxle to sit directly between the two front wheels.
Except first gen Q7 for some odd reason, it has a bit different AWD system than the rest of the Audi lineup, that allowed them to place the engine the same way BMW and Mercedes do it, so that a V12 or Inline 6 could fit.
I own one. Drive it around 15k kms per year. Currently close to 300k kms. No major issues with it, however a lot of regular maintenance require dropping the engine, which is costly. I will never find another car that is as robust and agile in the same time. Also, the fuel economy is not that bad. Usually, cars with similar specs, but with petrol engines get at least 20-30% more fuel usage. Usually, highway fuel usage is around 12-14 liters/100 km (17-20 mpg).
I own a cayenne second generation model 92A that has the audi 4.2 V8 turbodiesel. And it is chipped to 455hp 950nm torq. 0-100 in 4.5sec. i drive it 4years now and no major mainenance costs. Verry reliable. Fuel consumption is 7-8 liters/100km. And 12liters/100km when you floor it all the time.
I had both the Audi A7 biTurbo Diesel and the Audi S7 petrol and after easily tuning the torque to 900nm in the biTDI I actually preferred the diesel. There was something about being able to cruise up a tall incline hill with very little throttle and it didn't even bother dropping down out of 8th gear most of the time, that just felt actually powerful. So I can only imagine what this V12 version was like 😂
Well tuning would be out of the question without beefing up the gearbox. Torque at the peak was limited from the factory to give the gearbox a fighting chance.

I remember my father getting a Q7 As a rental car for a work trip back around 2008 I think. He took me in it on the Autobahn to visit my grandmother who was in hospital in another town at that time. It felt very powerfull and went very fast on a mostly unrestricted Autobahn :) I was actually quite scared on the way back, because it was fast and my dad took full advantage of the car and the fuel payed for by the company
It’s too bad that the concept did not gain traction in the R8 - pun intended. It would have been nice to have a turbodiesel engine in the R8 while Audi were dominating Endurance Racing. Oh, well… 🤷🏽♂️
I remember the year 2009 a house being built in my neighborhood, once it was finished I rode by it in my bike and there I saw a white Q7 with the lettering V12 on its boot. I was in absolute shock and awe. Not by the fact that it was a diesel V12 but a V12 in an SUV...
We just imported a 2nd gen of the v12 TDI Q7 at our shop in Ontario. It was imported from Germany. With just a dpf, cat, EGR and scr delete it's been flawless. Over the summer we usually used our 2500 Ram high output 6.7 Cummins to tow our race trailer. While that was getting the "emissions" system worked on we used the Q7. It worked amazing!
I’m halfway in the video and no honourable mention to the 5.0 V10 diesel that was also in the Toureg/VW stable. (PS I know it’s not the best engine but it’s still an interesting engine and a V10)
This is what I was looking for also. Not sure which is more reliable, neither have the best reputation. Those Toureg torque numbers have made me want one since they came out, I just don't want to pay to maintain and repair a VW.
I had one of those v10s touareg. Everything broke on it. I had to drop the engine to replace power steering pump, later I had to drop the engine again to replace leaking turbos, half if the engine had to be reisembled to replace glow plugs which failed within a year, carbon buildup was crazy on in in 40k, water pump faild within 50k. I broke driveshaft, probably 4x, and of course, airbag shocks failed multiple times. The times it worked, it was a great car, but it was in the garage on a hoist, probably 1/3 of the time
16:53 The 120 degree engine angle greatly helps balancing, allowing you to rev higher. The “Hot V” set up he mentions shortens the exhaust length into the turbo allowing for increased responsiveness and easier packaging.
R8 was supposed to have that engine but was too big and no gearbox could support it. Darkside Development is putting a v12 TDI in a VW Amarok with a manual.
Audi have made some amazing diesels. Last week I was up and down the country twice in a 4wd DSG 184hp torque monster and at "fast road " speed it returned 50mpg. What a machine!
@@laikiuxcs2servers I hear you. My other vehicle is a 6 speed manual 2.5Tdi 5 cylinder VW Transporter Shuttle with 120,00 miles on the clock and it's still on its original clutch!
I live in Brazil and Q7s here are very rare. The few old ones remaining are sold for like 4-digit amounts (in dollars). I own a 2013 VW Touareg 4.2 V8, which has a petrol engine by Audi btw, and that thing is so cool that I can only imagine how a V12 TDi must be!
Audi South Africa only brought in 30x of the Q7 V12 TDI's. I worked for Audi in sales for many years, and have only seen 2x of them ever. (One at the dealer, another on the road)
I was at all of the Le Mans 24hr the R18 entered and 2 or 3 or the Spa 6hr races. Those things cornered like they were on rails. Stuck to the road so much better than anything else on the track at the time. And they were so quiet it was like a gust of wind fizzing by. If you weren't paying attention you'd miss them and have to wait for them to come around again. They were incredible race cars
I always said, back before I was a builder and was a lowly vw mechanic, that diesel, with its insane torque, only needed to be paired with the right gearbox and turbo and they could be unbelievably quick. Maybe not 0 to 60 amazing but having relentless pull, you could have a car that goes from 50 to 90 in 2 seconds! Diesel's should be providing far more smiles than they currently do!
The Q7 and Touareg big TDIs were insane. I'd love to have the Touareg since the Q7 didn't make it here, but I already have enough old German cars fighting for the pennies in my bank account.
The same here in Brazil, but V10 TDi are so rare that I guess less than 5 cars were brought here. I have a VW Touareg 4.2 V8 petrol engine that is 1 of 500 in the country
Ive got a Bi turbo a6 and nothing for 10k can match how much fun the pure pace, and versatility that a 4wd car can give you for the price range, 0-60 in 5 seconds for an estate car is just mental, it was peak engineering, will never get that anymore
I had the single turbo 3.0 V6 with the DSG gearbox, it's a much nicer drive than the BiTurbo, which my partner has. When you get out of one and straight in the other you realise just how much better the 7speed twin clutch is. The BiTurbo sounds better though, that's undeniable.
I had an A6 C7 allroad BiTdi for 5 or 6 years. Fantastic car. As you say 0 - 60 was 5ish (or sligtly less) and the overtaking pace was brilliant -say 40 - 70. All of that performance and a great sound (always had my exhaust set to dynamic / sports mode) and 45MPG +
Really interesting vehicle, especially since the new Q7 55 does 0-60 in the same time, and that the new SQ7 does it in 4 seconds. Also really interesting how the 1st gen Touareg had a V10, which Fifth Gear used to tow a 747 with
This is why i used to love Audi - they used to desing and put insane engines in cars which shouldn't be having such engines. V12 diesel in a SUV, twin-turbo V10 in a family estate... You simply won't see anything like that again. I loved the philosphy Audi had from the 1980s up until 2009. They took big risks and made unassuming cars with exciting engines. Now they are just like a design house and haven't put a proper engine in a car for 15 years (with the exception of the 3.0TFSI, which also dates back to 2009).
Ther was a limited edition too. Patrick Hellman 111 ever made. Back in the day it was something like 250k in dollars. It had such features like crocodile lether... Creazy money.

This car was the highlight of my driving years to Clarkson and one and all. I actually delivered this very press car to EVO , back in the day. It was actually for Jethro , If I'm not mistaken.
Absolutely stonking SUV. The race cars were incredible too. Such a shame they never made the R8 diesel. That would have been an absolute monster for the road
We like those cars with some better specifications than a usual neighbor car. Thankfully your arena does some monster trucking 1:45 for you to be haunted by a memory of Moterų Ralis. Some public transport traffic is too difficult 6:30.
I was younger back then and glanced at these crazy VAG projects initiated by Piech that blew everything away. Only years later I learned how expensive everyone of these projects had to be. Today a VW car with more than three engine choices and more than four real buttons per vehicle seems to be forbidden, costsaving for the race to the bottom... Dont even get me started on the UX hell they created for themselfs since the MK8 Golf.... On one hand, a diesel seems to be the logical choice for a big euro SUV, On the other hand, there was no way these big TDI´s would have met modern emissions, the 2.0 TDI had problems with that and got stopped by Dieselgate. Even the A8 lost its V8TDI option in 2020...
Someone once said: "you dont race the opponents, you race the regulations" The only reason diesel audi was winning were the regulations of ammount of fuel in a tank and not ammount of energy in the tank. . Nontheless, I love diesel.
This example was fitted with the 'exclusive' options package (Totalling 45k itself apparently) and was a concept car to show it off. That's why I think it's in Audi UK's press office. I even think it's one of one.
lawd I wish my old boss had more patience, he ended up getting the V8 and not waiting the 4-5 months it would have took to get the V12. but the V8 he got was decked out and I always remember it driving like a cloud and watching top gear and sky sports on freeview that was the best media center they ever did. thing was a absolute weapon though and he drove it like it was a 1987 land rover
They should have released the R8 with this engine, the prototype was amazing. Technology moves fast though, and the current 4.0 TDI is actually faster in the Tuareg with a 0-62 of 4.9 seconds
The Q7 V12 never would have caught on here in the US because we have crew cab HD trucks. The equivalent of this Q7 in 2024 is the Ford F250 h.o. Platinum. With 500hp and 1200 lb/ft of torque (1600 nm), it’s very nearly as fast as this Q7 from 0-60. It costs $100,000. And on massive US roads it probably feels about the same size as the Q7 feels on tiny British roads. Plenty of luxury, tech, and space for your whole family.
I would like to see this v12 in the audi a5 of the same year, really! my dad`s a5 3.0 tdi its already very fun with a repro, almost 300hp and 600 of torque...
I've had two TDI's here in the us. An A8 TDI and my current A6 TDI. Not much like the new eTron or petrol powered versions. Too much piano black, and especially now no wood trim. Seem cheap to me and I HATE touch screens. The I love my MMI interface, don't have to look away from the road at all.
While talking engines, since you mentioned Mercedes, they had those crazy torque limited engines too. But I actually wonder what the status is of the supposed Diesotto engine, a petrol engine without spark plugs. Perhaps you could do a deep dive in that one day.
If they had put the V12 Diesel into an R8, it would have been funny. I´ve never driven a Q7, but I have driven a 5 cylinder 2.4 JTDm Alfa Romeo and a 2.0TDI VW and the funny thing about those diesel engines, is how the boost kicks in! You suddenly have this massive amount of power making you leap forward, even with just 175/140 hp. So I can only imagine what that V12 is doing, when you floor it.
My 2017 All Wheel Drive Diesel Jaguar is great. i can get 50 MPG and go almost 600 miles on a tank. normal about 47 and 550. its beautiful and drives like a dream and IT IS able to run on renewable BIODIESEL. sadly no more diesels are on offer in the Land of the free outside of a few pick up trucks and SUV's
When Jeremy Clarkson reviewed this thing, he said it completely defeated the purpose of diesel because it was "like turning your central heating off to save money, and then keeping warm... by burning Rembrandts" 🤣

@@northernirishviking7283Shame its not an Audi engine, you just have a Passat with lipstick.
Lololol this day and age are we surprised haha, still great motors though
Amazing that this is free. Thanks!
This car was the highlight of my driving years to Clarkson and one and all. I actually delivered this very press car to EVO , back in the day. It was actually for Jethro , If I'm not mistaken.
I work in Surrey, so I saw a few of these on the school run, sometimes with up to 2 children.
So, you know, can't knock the practicality.
Loving these videos
Absolutely stonking SUV. The race cars were incredible too. Such a shame they never made the R8 diesel. That would have been an absolute monster for the road
We like those cars with some better specifications than a usual neighbor car. Thankfully your arena does some monster trucking 1:45 for you to be haunted by a memory of Moterų Ralis. Some public transport traffic is too difficult 6:30.
This is the diesel everyone should talk about
Loved that - thanks
Someone once said: "you dont race the opponents, you race the regulations"
The only reason diesel audi was winning were the regulations of ammount of fuel in a tank and not ammount of energy in the tank.
.
Nontheless, I love diesel.
That wood option was INSANELY expensive!!+
Why is there a caterpillar on your upper lip?
Movember coming up
I was thinking something similar
This example was fitted with the 'exclusive' options package (Totalling 45k itself apparently) and was a concept car to show it off. That's why I think it's in Audi UK's press office. I even think it's one of one.
You guys have really picked up the torch from the TG lads for UK driving entertainment. Top stuff, mate. Love Audis me.
There’s a Q7 V12 that lives in my village, has such a road presence
Love these vids on unusual engines.
You gonna do one on the VW VR5 engines?
Ive had two both in SEAT toledos one a 10v the second a 20v.
Super video 👌🏻 I❤️LeMans🏁😎
Audi should make a diesel road going supercar, or better yet, hyper car. Diesel is world beating, right.
This is one of y'alls best vids. Awesome some.
Imma need that Fuel of Satan graphic as a sticker. It needs to adorn my Porsche Cayenne diesel.
Have a Luke at it. Just Luke at it.
lawd I wish my old boss had more patience, he ended up getting the V8 and not waiting the 4-5 months it would have took to get the V12.
but the V8 he got was decked out and I always remember it driving like a cloud and watching top gear and sky sports on freeview that was the best media center they ever did.
thing was a absolute weapon though and he drove it like it was a 1987 land rover
Love my 2009 Q7 4.2 tdi , so far 74,000 miles always towing a 3 ton trailer
I drove one a few times , and couldn’t resist doing a standing 0-100 kph blast, it was brutal and put my back out . 😂
They should have released the R8 with this engine, the prototype was amazing. Technology moves fast though, and the current 4.0 TDI is actually faster in the Tuareg with a 0-62 of 4.9 seconds
The R8 diesel would have been so cool
The sound mixing on drivetribe's last few videos have been really lacking lately... Sometimes i can't even continue watching
Did you lose a bet mike ? Shave the soup strainer ! :D Good vid :)
Movember is right around the corner. Mike's already set.
@@TheJohn8765 Looks like he's off to the Blue Oyster bar...
Thanks. I've never seen the v12 just the v10. It's a shame neither of those engines are no longer produced.
You never seen a V10 Q7 because they never made one.
Wish I could give two thumbs up!
The irony is that diesel is and continues to be cool in the USA. Diesel trucks are tremendously popular in the USA.
Q7 is more car-like: better handling and comfort
@@johnnyj3498Its also a useless SUV.
If you were in an Audi executive back in 2006, you’d be hoping that you weren’t gonna get caught for their new “cheating on emissions” technology lol
I would like to see this v12 in the audi a5 of the same year, really! my dad`s a5 3.0 tdi its already very fun with a repro, almost 300hp and 600 of torque...
Ironically this car failed to make it to the US and the EPA banned diesel engines a decade later.
Let's play spot the caterpillar..😂
I love my TDI but after 5 DPFs in 30k miles the pothole technology look so much better
Got a Peugeot hdi and the EGR / pdf annoyed me at 300 k km
Just delete and tune.
I’d love to see content with the R8 that had this V12 diesel engine … not sure if it was only stateside..
Fantastic!
AutoAlex recently bought a Macan for his Daily driver, I choose this above the Porsche
While talking engines, since you mentioned Mercedes, they had those crazy torque limited engines too. But I actually wonder what the status is of the supposed Diesotto engine, a petrol engine without spark plugs. Perhaps you could do a deep dive in that one day.
before watching: volumetric efficiency and keeping piston speed below combustion speed
Mike mustache is coming in nicely 😂
He's in a Village People tribute band!
I had an A6 station with the 3L Bi-Turbo diesel...
Chip tuned and it was a beast.
RS8 doesnt exist.
@@hexagonosaurus5848 Oh lol, I meant R8 xD
Definitely aimed at the full size L322 Range Rover Vogue/Westminster of the day.
They really should have gone with the Diesel Supercar concept.
Wow 😮 cool engine for a build 🤔
I'm using the mercedes m120 V12 for my supercar project 😎
M120 is my favourite engine. What you building?
@pearsy85 Hey, I am building my own one off V12 supercar that I designed 👍 Im building a car to give me the Zonda driving experience 😎
Audi should've put it in a 2500 Truck chassis to compete in the US. Ram is getting that much torque out of a straight 6 and its usable as a truck.
Just checked out that Carly Universal Adapter on UA-cam… 😮
When Jeremy Clarkson reviewed this thing, he said it completely defeated the purpose of diesel because it was "like turning your central heating off to save money, and then keeping warm... by burning Rembrandts"
🤣
