- Making a waterproof long-lasting roof with only Natural Materials! We dive into the beautiful craftsmanship of traditional thatching, without cordage, screws and wire, just willow and reed.
Our friction-fit bushcraft Shelter / shed made just with Axe, Saw and Knife gets a proper natural roof from water reed. It's also a great practice project before starting the real deal: the roundhouse roof!

@@matlafragga29 just search for hand augers. There are different styles/brands but they are easy to find.
How do you spell that name you call each other? Ahweh?
Your time is very appreciated my good man. In my eyes, you make the best historical bushcraft video as well as your survival videos as well. I mean you found a cave with beer in it. Truly awesome my friend and thank you for all your very hard work you do and sharing it all with us. Cheers to you guys!!!
@@matlafragga29 hey there is a man by the name of John O Neil, Lismore, Co. Waterford. Check on adverts.ie type in his name and old auger, there on there. I get old hand tools off him, he posts all over the world. Best of luck🇮🇪
Your production value is better than most TV shows. Awesome thanks for sharing.
Julius, I appreciate ALL your hard work.
Not just the building,
but the filming, editing, narration, tool making...
WOW! You are awesome!
Thanks man, aprreciated! :)
Tell us more about your apprentice! Is he family? A local boy who refuses to not help? He's great, and a heck of a hard worker!
Kenneth, local buy! I'm sure he will be back some time for a proper introduction;)
Finally. The long wait was worth the while. The editing just keeps getting better.
Thanks to the local Thatcher Lady. Does she have a name, we might hear?
"Fair play to you, boy" Julius is talking like a master craftsman already ;)
That’s truly amazing that a roof like this, if done with proper material can last 30 years!!! That’s more than most traditional roofs on modern homes nowadays
The guy who dislikes this video hates himself. I hope he finds his path
Nice one lads that boy can use an axe. M y Uncle was a thatcher had a big wood yard and farm contractor. I used to go and help in the summer holidays best days of my life. It was 40 year ago. Love what your doing.
Cheers.
Always a like lads.
The process of thatching a roof is fascinating.
I realised that too! only when in the middle of the project
I just came back from tea time and I saw that you posted a video I actually squealed with delight
I really love your channel and videos, I’ve been subscribed for almost 2 years or more keep up the great content and work ❤️
Smooth gethatched Julius. Mooi werk man.
THanks kribbeltje krabbel!
Julius, you are such an amazingly talented young man. Not only your bush craft and carpentry skills, but your filmmaking and post production work is exceptional. You should be proud of these things, truly they are art. Lovely video. I look forward to Fridays!
smart thinking , practise on the smaller hut roof before tackling the roundhouse .. and nice to see an apprentice / next generation bush-crafter
Whoever is doing the cinematography / video editing....Kudos! Awesome episode as usual!
Each one of these videos is such a great production, the time and effort into all of it is astounding.
the dog is happy as larry thats a plus big respect to you for thatching that roof lots of work that was well done men
There is nothing more relaxing then getting outdoors and working on projects like these
Thatched roof was so.meticulously & patiently done
Admiring your patience 👍
Awesome work Julius! This Roundhouse series is the single best thing I have ever seen on UA-cam. You guys are GREAT!!!
This is literally the best thing on UA-cam! Love your videos lube your positive attitude and care for nature! ... Take care about nature!!!
The amount of soil that's been built up right outside that little shack is amazing! from all the carving, debarking, and sawing of wood. To the reed scraps and cattails, you guys could grow your own food from the soils you've made!
How on earth did you put you camera back in exactly the same spot and frame it so well with a seamless transition after one year? Now that is skill! :)
Thanks for this video Julius, it was mellow and relaxing. You and Dillan brought a smile to my face, so thank you.
like n coment for that algo love ya work lads keep it up always amazing content
Grand as always keep entertaining and educating and helping everyone to understand why Ireland is so green(RAIN)
Wowwww, what a super cool video!! Bravo!!
Damn, that kid sure knows how to split wood!
im so glad your back to the build again, ive missed watching progress every friday :)
a very beautiful project and a nice video to show and explain the process. Thanks for putting this together. Keep up the great job.
This is it folks after more than 2000 years we go back to learning how to walk again, the question remains what is the best path for humanity? Plastic or paper?
we harvested ALL the reed ourselves, we were GIFTED Cured reed thanks to X. We stored it in PRE BUILT locations to keep it safe. X_x
I admire all the hard work. dont fool yourselves by missing the labeled shortcuts. as im sure many many do.
UA-cam life and the way we do things is very challenging...
You two have mad skills and a great work ethic! Love watching!
The return of Thomas!!!
you have an eye for the beauty of the mundane in your camera work and bushcraft nicely done
watching from West Virginia, USA. when you mentioned the rain i had to tell you that we were in Ireland (south only) in 2018. not one drop of rain for 2 weeks. we were told it was the hottest, driest june/july in almost 100 years. were you in Ireland at the time? we loved your country(my husband and i both have distant ties there), and met some amazing people. one old guy in Quilty was so knowledgeable about his property. as we are history freaks it was amazing to hear that his family had lived on the property for a long, LONG time. his grand dad bought it(this guy was past 80) and when i asked him who it was purchased from he said 'the Whites'. i asked how long they had had the place, and he said, now get this...............'400 YEARS!!'. i was delighted to hear that. what about your families? where are they from in Ireland? how long were they there?
Thanks for sharing your story! No deep roots here. My aunty imigrated here some 45 years ago from the Netherlands. She lives in county Galway, where me (and Dylan) kind of ended up aswell nowadays;)
That transition to "1 year later" was beautiful. You're doing a great job and the new roof looks amazing!
Can't get enough of your content! Well done and much love from Tennessee USA😊🐝❤
A beautiful video, as always. I definitely am learning a different approach to thatching from the one I've seen in an older series. Thank you!
I love your videos. You can really see how much work it is to build something and how much effort you give in making and editing the video.
A joy to watch you work, your skills always amaze me
Great to see you back making fantastic videos 👍
Also, yay, heather thatching, I'm excited to see it :-)
Nice to have you back🙂
Awesome work my young friend, you are teaching this old dog new tricks.....or should I say old forgotten tricks.
Thank you for caring and sharing this great knowledge
Sooo glad to see you guys back at it!
Those water reeds have become an invasive species here in southern Ontario Canada. People brought them here to use in garden displays on their front lawns. Unfortunately they grow faster than our native bull rush and choke them out in our water systems. But they do make one helluva good duck blind for hunting. Love your content guys. Keep at er.
Yay you got an assistant!
I am especially fond of thatched rooves, you've done a great job there.
Really good video. Love the editing
Just amazing hand crafted work
Looking forward to more
Enjoying the ride to the end
Thank you guys, lovely video editing and Julius your woodworking skills keep getting sharper. I built a ladder with power tools and a workbench which is less symmetrical than that! You made lock down bearable and helped so many of us stay sane, I hope you are both feeling the love.
The roundhouse will look amazing with a fully thatched roof. It will be such a proud moment for you both!! Cant wait to see the upcoming videos.great to have you back
Those first 2 minutes were fantastic. Great cinematography! Good job!

It's been so long, great to see you again. Very interesting method and the Thatch style gives a very warm sense. All the best from here in West Australia

Great skill in the knowledge of thatching, thanks for your video, well done
Wow that was great story.
Excellent video as always. Loved it. Very educational. I had no idea how one would go about thatching a roof, but you Gefixt that. (:>
Hi Julius. Great video as always. Excellent choices with the music, too.
More please :) your content is amazing, and your editing is too, great stuff guys
It's really coming along guys. Excited for you to start on the round house roof!
All the best
That “one year later” intro & transition was epic, felt like it was straight out of a scene from the lord of the rings. Just out of curiosity though, is there no chance that leaving the old moss roof underneath the new thatching will cause it to rot?
Amazing work.
He sure is on it!
Very cool again Julius! That sheds coming up nicely and also, oh my goodness the days of work it takes to make it, Incredible!
And to condense it down into a, not even half an hour film takes some very good filmmaking and editing work so clap clap to you my friend!
Keep it up, can't wait for the next one!
Very nice words! Thanks a lot for the great support!
@@SmoothGefixt You're absolutely welcome :)

Recently found your channel. Thank y'all for sharing your hard work with us. Haven't been able to stop watching. Don't understand why anyone would give these videos a thumbs down. They must have big dumb sausage fingers and accidentally hit it😂
