      I bought the Alinco 220/900 MHz handheld when it finally came out because we had linked 900 MHz repeaters in Southern Cal., and I was tired of buying Motorola stuff you needed a master's degree in programming to get on 900 MHZ. The radio was a miserable failure because it had too many technical problems.

    I think the reason the features being so similar on most Chinese HTs is because the available radio chips define what is possible. Selling these radios to the commercial (eg building sites) customers they make them as cheaply as possible using standard chips. So more assembly than individual design. 73 Ed.

    A budget single band hand held on 23cm would surely sell bucket loads ... and would be a huge benefit in justifying the 60 MHz of spectrum we have.

    I got my license in 1999, and yes, the market has changed. My first radio was the ic t8a, a ht with 6m as well as 2m and 70cm. And the Yaesu vx5r was also out. Shortly after that Icom brought over a 23cm FM and dstar mobile rig, and Icom put 23cm fm into the t81a.
    But they didn't sell that well. Instead we bought the Baofengs that came out in the 2000s.
    What does excit me is what all is being hacked in the uv k5. And I am relatively pleased that TIDRADIO seems to be going there own way instead of just another Baofeng clone.
    That said, I am interested in seeing something new and interesting.

    When the Quansheng came out it immediately caught my interest because it was hackable. I'm still waiting for Quansheng to come out with something new and better but they may just rest of the success of the models they have. Xeigu had the right idea. I use a G90 and I love that radio. I have been able to make contacts from California to Hungary, which is 6,100 miles away. There is a large population of amateur radios folks who would buy a handheld that did something different in terms of bands. The Baofeng was my first radio so it holds a special place in my heart. However, unless they expand the bands, I'm probably not buying another one. Great video. Thanks...73...KN6KNB

  • @Eric10179

    Man, baofeng could completely change their entire business model and dominate the VHF+ space.
    Make 2 radios; one, a triband for 2m,1.25m,70cm, and the other, a triband for 33cm,23cm,13cm.
    That would be super cool. You’d have all the best bands above 2m in 2 radios. Just pack them with all the features you already make in the 100+ different models you have. Simplify and dominate the market. The consumer would win too!

    I see articles and comments here in the States about not losing our bands but few using the ones we have gear for, like 220, 902 and 1.2 Ghz. I agree with you wholeheartedly , Hayden . We need more affordable radios on bands that are less utilized and need our support. Alinco needs to get back in the game and make those HT's that had dual band 220/900 and a tri band 2/70/1.2 at the $300 level like before . Or...Chinese companies...you can tackle this ! N7MYW

    Chinese manufacturers will probably never start creating new radios that are not VHF/UHF or Poc radios (if they can be called like radios).
    Reason being is they (companies) only create income if they sell huge amounts of them. UV-5R is super popular and has gained such popularity because it is cheap and fits in license free frequency range. And among all those millions of them that have been manufactured, about 90% of them are used by non-licensed operators. In many foreign and smaller countries they are used as EMS/Police/Security even military radios, and people using them don't care if they are on 2m, 220Mhz or 10m band. That leads us to the next point, VHF/UHF frequencies are usually the "legal" ones in most countries, like every country have PMR446, Hunting frequencies, Hiking frequencies or similar that are open to anyone. There are no 220Mhz, 10m or 6m frequencies that are open to non-licensed radio amateurs.
    Also a huge thing that is selling other radios apart from UV-5R, are that specific radio features, like waterproofing, transmit power, how many batteries and antennas it comes with. Because for 90% of people who are going to use those radios, that's what matters. Getting the biggest bang for buck.

    I can't wait to see a UV-5R type hand held with SSB which operates on 12 / 11 / 10m it would be the next big thing. Also once that technology is available it could then go into other bands like 6m, 2m, 70cm & 1.2G. I think the hobby would go massive if people could get there hands on these type of cheap hand helds and get on air!

  • @mosmix6680
    @mosmix6680 5 днів тому

    I agree, but you should note that literally all of cheap vhf/uhf radios are based on inexpensive chips ( bk4815, bk4819 ) . Yes, in more expensive models they may use some more filters and amplifier cascade, which helps to reduce these spurious emissions. I think that is the only problem. With their structure so well worked out and those chips being so cheap, it would be hard and expensive for those companies to develop something new. And it would have much higher price.

    There was, of course, the Icom IC-T81, which did 6, 2, 440, and 1.2. I had one for a little while, but due to being pretty eyes-free hostile, I sold it. I could almost get around some of it, anyway.
    Things I'd like to see:
    * More eyes-free accessibility across the board. If not spoken menus, frequency and memory channel readouts (which I'd love), at least put in different pitched beep tones to denote toggling on and off, default settings, menus wrapping, etc. But full spoken readouts such as available in OpenGD77, or the Kenwood TH-D75, would be great.
    * An SSB handheld: Santek made the LS-202 back a long while ago. The couple times I saw one for sale, I wasn't in a position to buy, but it was FM and SSB. I know the Quansheng UV-K5 can do this, but at the expense of the spoken menus, apparently, see my first want.
    * Hf handhelds: Even a 10m one that did SSB. Yes, I understand the antenna limitations. But a few manufacturers made single band handhelds that covered parts of 80, 40, 15, 10, and 6m. Actually, probably all rebadged versions of the same radio. Closest I know of would be the Elecraft KX2.

    Even on the UHF CB I want something like the icom stuff which is programmable but can be locked down so it's easy to use for ordinary users. $400 for a ic-f2000 or $300 for a ic-41pro is a lot when you need >100 of them for an event.

  • @vk3crg
    @vk3crg 8 днів тому +1

    Yep! Totally agree Hayden. I bought a G90 and to be honest I didn't expect much. I was wrong. It's well-made and works so well on transmit and receive. I did have a problem with the local AM station (which came back on air recently after 30 years off air!) and it was overloading the front end. I couldn't really complain as the station was bought back to life by the company I work for! 🤣 I bought a cheap inline filter which killed the AM broadcast interference and the receive capability of the G90 was then really on show. Then, on a Mad Dog Coil from my backyard in Geelong, I'm chatting to a bloke in The Netherlands using 20w on the G90. Xiegu seem to be one of the only budget radio manufacturers who are thinking outside the box and not afraid to try new things. Having a cheaper lot of radios without all the bells and whistles (and price!) of an Icom or Yaesu etc would be a great way for amateurs to try different modes and bands etc without having to fork out a fortune. I'd love someone to make a cheap, simple to use low power DATV transmitter to which you could add optional power amps etc. Something like that would really make DATV far more popular. DATV is an area that can be fiddly and complicated to get into if you're only new to all the terms and technology. 73, Craig VK3CRG

    • @HamRadioDX
      @HamRadioDX  8 днів тому

      DATV would be awesome - and you're right it can be a little complicated to get into - I haven't even looked at it for that reason. Awesome on the G90! You guys still broadcasting AM there? I assume you also go out on FM too?

    G'day Hayden
    I think the reason why we are not seeing anything other than VHF/UHF handhelds out of China, and anything specifically for ham radio is because of what you mentioned early in your video....mass production, cookie cutter stuff which will work in the ham, gmrs and cb segments across US, Asia and EU markets. Development of a 10m or 6m handheld would be seeking support from the ham market only....and frankly, that isn't enough. Some of the major Japanese manufacturers are drawing away from manufacturing for the ham market...Kenwood/Alinco the most obvious examples. While I agree it would be nice to be able to access a cut price HH for 10 or 6 in the same way we can for 2 and 70, I don't think they would sell enough to justify the R&D and ramp up.

  • @baronedipiemonte3990
    @baronedipiemonte3990 8 днів тому

    Here in the US the 33cm/900mhz band is strictly for the financially "well to do" ... because the ONLY 900mhz gear is new or used ($1k plus) Motorola or Kenwood public safety gear that has been modified. The ONLY dedicated amateur 900/33cm gear that ever was, was a single Handheld by Alinco. It was a dual band 220/902 and was only on the market for about 2 years. 900 has quite excellent signal properties that are like a combo of the best of 2m & 70cm. I have a pair of the now defunct TriSquare Exrs handies, 1 watt (advertised) probably less... and I was able to get great range out of them... through the dense pine woods - almost 2 miles. 900 also has better signal penetration in the urban environment than 70cm.

  • @AdamSWL
    @AdamSWL 8 днів тому

    100% this!!
    It seems that the radios being churned out are just the same thing but in a different case/style.
    No remote display mics like the brilliant Yaesu FT-530 or removable face like the Icom IC-Z1A.
    I still have my tri band Icom IC-Delta 1A and an Alinco DJ-G7 for 23cm but no Chinese manufacturer has dared try to go above 440Mhz in a handheld.
    Not to mention the lack of any Chinese manufactured wide band receiver in a hand held, with digital modes supported.
    China can produce really good quality items (some audio gear I own is excellent) and just need to move beyond the same dual band format. As Hayden says, they will sell well due to the lack of any other current offerings.

    It's the same with Android car head units. Small number of platform factories that design/copy/duplicate, with a large number of assemblers & marketers all selling the same reference hardware, that then attach their logo. Complete with copied bugs and design flaws. The confusion happens when comparing the Chinese origin design - multi-asssembly model to traditional all in one design thru sell model such as icom.

    While I don't know of any Chinese HTs that operate outside of the two normal 2m and 70cm bands, if you pay a bit more money you can get some with pretty cool features. There are OpenGD77-compatable HTs that make great radios for working satellites not to mention DMR, there's one that has an internal KISS TNC for APRS, GPS, Bluetooth and USB quick charging (LANCHONLH HG-UV98), and there may be others that can do some neat stuff. What the Chinese companies are known for besides cheap dual-banders is taking popular innovations created by hams and incorporating them into radios and gear that anyone can buy instead of having to build.

    I think, in general, we need to support the lowering of prices of radios. I may be a bit innocent, but it seems to me that a lot of the big companies like Icom, Kenwood etc. sell stuff that can be reproduced with available electronics for waaaaay cheaper. I think the Chinese manufacturers have the potential to make the entire market way more affordable (I mean slashing prices by half), and a way more competitive market. If not them, I'm probably gonna go learn RF/Electrical engineering to make that possible. It's insane that an HF radio costs more than a phone (And I'm saying this as Gen Z).

      Three things: Quality, Features, and Brand Name.
      Quality is insanely superior on the Japanese radios compared to Chinese.
      The Japanese radios also have a lot more features that I couldn’t even list them all
      And, like any higher end businesses, you will pay more for the brand name. how much? I dunno but it will be some amount.
      But, if you don’t care about the name, the quality, or the extra features, Baofengs and Chinese radios in general just work, and there’s nothing wrong with that!

    • @stargazer7644
      @stargazer7644 3 дні тому

      The Japanese radios are legal to use. The Chinese ones often are not. Ham radio has spectral purity requirements that put limits on how many spurious signals a transmitter can emit and at what levels. The Chinese radios save money by leaving out filtering, and their output doesn't comply with the law. When you transmit on 146 MHz with your chinesium radio, you're also transmitting on 292 MHz, 438 MHz, 584 MHz, 730 MHz, 874 MHz....etc They spray interference across the bands. My Baofeng 2m HT can be heard on 10 GHz.
