If they are reading the comments here are my suggestions.
    1) 6M and or 10M HT. With SSB would be a big bonus. There are several 6M and 10M repeaters around here.
    2) HT's that have 1.25M (220), 33cm (900), 23cm (1296).
    3) Add HF/SW receive to VHF/UHF radios.
    4) An actual receive signal strength display, not just a meaningless bar graph.
    5) Support the M17 digital mode protocol.
    6) Radios that actually meet/exceed FCC compliance standards.
    7) For VHF/UHF radios make sure they have a fast scan speed. Most of the cheap HT's have painfully slow scan speed.
    8) Memory banks so different groups of favorite channels can be grouped together and scanned.
    9) Full duplex dual band VHF/UHF for satellite operation. Must have good filtering to prevent TX band from effecting RX band.
    10) Possibly a dual band modular radio. A radio that has the capability to do all bands 6M and above by swapping out a module for each band.

Those cheap radios exist mainly because the RF1846 and the BK4819 chips exist. Developping this chips took a lot of time and money. Ham market is way too tight to deserve spending a lot of time and money to develop a chip that allow all what you are dreaming of.
      It won't happen.

@@superpieton you can make SDRs from arduios. You don't need a special chip to make it happen. For example the trusdx is basically an Arduino with some clocks filters and amps.

Our lowest license allows the use of that band and I'll bet a lot of people unsure if they want to go further in the hobby would buy them up. Agreed. APRS location beacons are the least useful and fun part of this mode in my humble opinion, but that's the use case that seems to get all the attention from manufacturers. Even if the messaging relied on an app and Bluetooth, it would be a move in the right direction.

      @GeordonVanTassleMOD 6 днів тому

@@SamuelBradstreet Location beaconing is VERY useful for weather spotting/SkyWarn in the US, mostly due to making it dead-simple to know where the spotter is in relation to weather reporting. speaking as a trained spotter AND trained emergency manager (since retired, due to medical reasons), being able to track the location of spotters during a severe weather event with minor effort is EXTREMELY good both for the spotter safety AND for reallocation of spotters in the field as weather events unfold.
But adding APRS messaging via BT would be an incredible value-add.

I own one of the only SSB 2m handhelds ever made - the Santec LS202 from the early 1980s. I'd LOVE to replace that as it barely functions. I have used it as an IF radio for microwave transverters and there are very few alternatives in the form factor. Proper USB-C PD charging would be great, so that you might charge a radio in 30 minutes. Also, radios should be programmed over USB-C and not require any additional slow audio cables. Bluetooth would be good too - not just for speaker/mics, but also programming, and heck if you've got SSB capability, now you can run FT-8 or Q65 without a wired connection. And to that end, a decent TCXO, and possibly an external 10 MHz input as long as we are dreaming. A simple built-in SWR bridge might be handy for verifying antennas are functional. If you've got SSB and you are doing weak signal, then you might also do a spectrum display. Or maybe sell an add-on device that is a dedicated display. All of these features will require development budgets that exceed existing business models I'm afraid. The availability of dirt-cheap dedicated FM two-way radio chips that do the bulk of the work is what makes these radios cheap, and many of these features will require substantial extra circuitry that is not commodified in the same way. The ham market is likely not big enough to support this work unless one company wants to really scale and become a proper competitor to the big 3.

"Heterodyne" frontend instead of "Direct-Conversion" ... all these current radios suffer from: Overloading /Deafening by strong out-of-band signals ... the filtering is (too) minimal ... heterodyne or superheterodyne will improve this ... and make them more sensitive also ... you get more coverage and less interference ... etc ... etc ... No problem to pay 30$ more for that.

After your other video I noticed Radioddity has a 10 meter radio available. I've owned two G-90's and have the XPA125B amp in a setup with one just for digital. I would like to see Xiegu develop a 100 watt version of the G-90 and any other of the Chinese producers develop HF radios to compete with the ICOM's and Yaesu's. I think that's a pretty tall order and the Chinese would have to have much better engineering and quality control than in the past, but it's doable.

SSB on 2m and 70cm, 23 cm as well would be very interesting. Most of the handhelds that can do 23cm are FM only, I have avoided them because of this. 220 MHz would be of interest as well as 33cm, but for me a 23 cm radio with SSB would be of the most interest. Proper SSB on 2m and 70cm would make a radio much more useful adding 23cm, 33cm or 1.5m would be even better and command more of a premium but single band radios would also be interesting as those bands are less popular and therefor might not be a good fit for everyone.

ssb on vhf/uhf would be cool but the feature that cheaper radios lack for me is aprs. if someone can make a vhf/uhf radio with aprs (both rx/tx) under 100usd i think it would be amazing

I use my Lime Talkpod everyday for 220MHz. It really works great on 2//440 bands as well.
I would love a 23/900/6 meter set of handi talkies from Talkpod as well.
    I hope they follow through.

True USB-C charging, not needing a USB-A charger with an A to C cable. The standard is different per KK7LXU who works in the industry and helped to write that standard.

33cm (902-928mhz). Most underused band. Only one HT was ever made for 33cm. All the rest of us run Motorolas.

Semi related, I picked up a GA5WB for APRS but I have barely gotten it to work for APRS, it ends up sending corrupted packets and then I need to factory reset it to get it sending reasonable packets. Did you have any success or do you know if they'll maybe put out a firmware update at some point (I think the current firmware is less than 1.0 so does that mean unfinished?)

Maybe a 2m, 70cm, 33cm tribanders that have FM and SSB capability. Maybe then 70cm, 33cm and 23cm tribanders with FM/SSB capability. Integrated TNCs on 6m, 2m, 70cm could also be a big thing, now that packet is doing a great comeback for EMCOMM.

I have also had Mizuho and Nishi-Musen HF and VHF SSB handhelds. I don't know why no one makes a SSB HT, and now it should have WSJT. It's 2024!

Absolutely 23cm. I did send a message to Anytone some months ago asking them why they and most Chinese Radio Manufacturing facilities had not bought a 23cm Radio to the market as I believe it is a market worth chasing, ICOM with their 9700 seem to be the only manufacturer in that market place at the moment. I have a 9700 but not everyone can afford one and it is a band that is very vulnerable and could be swiped from the Amateur community at the drop of the hat. "They old saying if you build it they will come."

Definitely the 10 meter band 28.000 - 29.600 MHz and/or the 6 meter band. With good propagation, you can work around the world on 10 meters, even with a low power handheld. With a sound card built in - world wide FT8 digital

One can do good things even with 23cm at 2W and a home built aerial such as 10 element Yagi or the use of a old Satellite TV dish. Rob VK2XIC.

A basic, straightforward, 23cm FM monoband ... hand-held, mobile or both. This neglected band is right at the top of the "use it or lose it" list and we really need to justify the 60 MHz of spectrum allocated. Availability of budget equipment is the key.
Our club would almost certainly seek to establish a repeater if there was inexpensive gear available allowing people to use it.
