DuoReview My main reason why I still can't watch it at all is how much a mindfuck it is. Don't get me wrong I love real horror but not up to David Lynch levels get what im saying?
DuoReview can I be honest with you I don't agree with you when it comes to another yes there are some jump-scares in another but it also one of those anime that has a lot of psychological fear to it so it does have build up I don't agree with you on that but that's cool we all have different opinions cuz I'm only saying something cuz I saw it on the video is a example of things that have jump-scares but actually there's a lot of psychological fear in that anime if you pay attention to it in my opinion I think anime actually is the only thing that actually has true horror in it most animes are good at catching free old school horror like you used to seeing some horror movies shiki is also a anime that that reminded me of a true genuine horror because it played just like a traditional vampire movie and sometimes I wonder though if maybe if a person says about Higurashi that it's boring maybe they just don't understand anime something tells me they would watch any other thing but that I see a lot of people that are biased towards anime and it doesn't even have to be bad at all it just has to be anime I love anime it could play out just like a movie and I seen some people be like it's bad it's just cartoons that's for children so I think people that usually hate on anime are people that don't even really watch it so anyone hate on Higurashi I would ask them have you seen it I'm just saying I don't think anyone who can sit there and just go always boring probably don't even know because they probably don't even try to watch it no offense to anyone who thinks a show is boring but I don't think that a lot of those people are just people that went and not liking anime from the beginning and had it in their mind it's going to be stupid even though they didn't really check it out they just said it was because I just didn't want to find out but I could be wrong that's just my opinion on the fact
your video was good , it help Me understand the plot of this anime , but I was disappointed at the ending of season 1 , I guest you are right , I am already conditioned to see horror movies now days a lot of jump scares is more entertaining than a slow process horror it get's boring , I lost the old fashion horror feelings but what can I say every person has there taste .
I found it scary the first time, enthralling the second time i watch it since i was finding out so many answers and everything fitting together, and so sad the third time.. especially when i played first arc of the game, this show is heartbreaking once you understand what's going on. :( Like Rena sees he's getting under the weather and he's drifting away from her, so she goes out of her way to be really nice to him and make him food when his mom is out of town and other stuff only to be continually lied to and rejected in worse and worse ways... D: Ow..
I prefer psychological horror over jumpscares because while jumpscares do actually scare me (It's the build up to me thinking they are going to be worse than they actually are not really the jumpscare itself) gore just makes me cringe. the psychological stuff sticks with me, messes me up, makes it so I can't sleep. it's great! And I can get my fiance to cuddle me if I am too messed up by the psychological horror
Lady Death I think that if you have a lot of jump-scares and no psychological horror then it's unbalanced but if you add in a lot of psychological scares with that then it's no longer a problem because it balances it out but that can't be said the other way if it's too far the other way it won't be scary either the same with the gore I think if they're going to have a lot of one thing they have to balance it out let's see if they're going to have a lot of Gore they could add in a lot of jump-scares combined with a lot of psychological scares because like you said before if you add psychological scares I can make the jump scare stick out more and stick in your mind same with the Gore too so if you have a lot of Gore and a lot of jump-scares and a lot of psychological scares me do it right it'll actually end up working that's a promise lot of modern-day movies they just don't jump scares and nothing else or they just have a lot of Gore and nothing or are they just decide to make it all psychological look at the butterfly effect it's not a horror movie but they put a lot of psychological stuff in there to the point where it actually ended up hurting the movie and not making any sense in my opinion but Higurashi has a balance it balances everything that's what makes it great and to top it all off they add comedy and cute stuff in there to throw off the audience because they're so caught off guard because of how cute it is their brain is naturally thinking this is a sweet anime and then your brain is caught off guard because the opposite happens something horrifying happens any just get naturally surprised and terrified even more all these fears in the enemy hits you like a ton of bricks so all the psychological and all types of fears hits you out of nowhere so it ends up being more like a roller coaster of fear and that's why I love this anime I still cannot get Rika killing yourself out of my head to me that was the most messed up point in Higurashi and it was also one of the most brilliant if it wasn't messed up I wouldn't have watched it because if I can't be horrified what's the point in watching a horror anime
I hate being a grammar police officer and not to be rude or anything, but when writing a long comment, please use COMMAS and PERIODS! Just a piece of advice. Almost lost my breath when reading it.
That's part of the reason why I loved it so much to be honest. I knew what it was, but the first 2 episodes threw me off. I actually wondered if I was watching the right show. XD
DuoReview when I watched season 2. I was confused by the first two or three, because it felt to much like a slice of life anime. But at the same time, it was a very smart move. because when it went dark or serious I wanted those moments back. Though the second season was a great sequel! It wrapped everything up into this beautiful bow but I still want more of it! Where is keiichi living now? What happened to Rena after the curse was lifted? What about Satako? Sure all these questions can be answered ourselves but I want to see it in an ova still. I want more of this beautiful anime!
I kept reading, knowing how confused I was... and I still am... that's part of why I love it. It continues to haunt you, and that IS what horror does.😁
Higurashi is the best and only good horror anime to be honest. I still remember my first time watching the Shion/Mion arc (my favourite in the first season), I was home alone that night and couldn't sleep because I was too paranoid. Good times. The last arc in the first season was to give a sense of hope in the series, that all the gruesome and tragic deaths weren't all for nothing. It was to build trust within the characters, to show it was possible to get through a 'bad ending'. That's why the 'Massacre arc' in the second season is my favourite. Good video, it's nice to see that people actually know what Higurashi is actually about, rather than thinking its just "shock value".
The 2nd/4th arc combine are one of the most interesting pieces of storytelling I've ever seen. This series has a lot to it, and this is only discussing the first season. =D
Kevin Nyaa I 100% agree with you it is actually the best anime of all time in my opinion oh my gosh I love Higurashi and you're Rena ryuugu profile is awesome
Same with me. Except I wasn't alone at home, but I still got pretty paranoid even though I was already 15 or 16 when I first saw it. My favourit chapter in regards to the horror is still the second. All the uncertainty was really unnerving. First getting teased with that Mion(=Shion)+Rika scene which never gets any resolution except that Rika apparently is dead (we never see her body). The unclear identity behind the twins - which starts of innocently as some love story plot device. Well and the fact that people just keep disappearing until we hear in the end, that they might be dead. Oh yeah and the end - both twins gone, Mion missing and the apparently innocent Shion killed. The arc was really terrifying. And that is just one reason why Higurashi is still my favourit horror show to this day.
I just noticed something... do you remember at the end of the first arc when Keiichi asked "What are you going to do to me?" Mion said something along the lines of "What happened to Tomitake." She wasn't talking about KILLING him. She was talking about what they did to Tomitake on the visual novel, the punishment game where they just drew on his shirt with a marker... and the true sad thing is on the last arc when Keiichi remembers his sins, he realizes that what Mion was holding wasn't a syringe... IT WAS A MARKER.
by that logic ur telling me keiichi hallucinated all of those creepy stalker faces that rena and mion made in the first arc. Dang I wish the anime can show me what actually was going on in that arc from Rena's POV
@@poggsvandoops94 extremely late but yep, that's what happened. Keiichi is an unreliable narrator for the entire first arc because he's the one being paranoid about what's going on. You can also pick it up quick in the scene where Rena is outside his house mouthing, "I'm sorry" over and over. The thing about that scene, he keeps saying it to himself to the point of the detective not getting a response from him but clearly still being there.
havent seen the 2nd season so no spoilers pls, but if that was true then how do u explain him cutting his own neck after? Isnt the siringe something recurrent in this show? How many coincidental markers are there?
Higurashi wasn't just an amazing horror anime, it was an amazing story in general. Never thought the 'Endless Eight' structure idea could be used to create a carefully crafted story about friendship and fate (beyond all the gore of course)
If the Endless Eight actually "changed" anything in it's constant repetitions. But no, Endless Eight just made extremely minor changes and was basically about being trapped in a time loop yet doing the same sequence of events over and over and over. Also, Higurashi came first ( Higurashi's first novel came out in 2002, Haruhi's LN began serialization in 2003).
For some reason, Higurashi never scared or disturbed me like it has others. Instead, I see the positive things about the story: the value of friendships, the psychology, and the intriguing mystery blended with perfect pacing, that kept me wanting to come back for more and more. I'm also a sucker for isolated, small town settings in anime. It makes the characters more vulnerable, and it provides a reason for why they cannot seek help. Despite this, it feels cozy and pleasant to me. But I also enjoyed the gore, screaming, and maniacal character moments. I love Higurashi, and the way the characters take action and learn to work together. I asscoiate Higurashi with fun, reliable friendships, adventure, and hope. It's so much more than a horror anime to me. In my opinion, Higurashi is best approached for what it is- a PSYCHOLOGICAL horror anime.
yeahhhh saaaaaame A lot of people say that they're scarred by the show and can't watch on and things, but tbh I think this show is completely fine and amazing!!!!! Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is my all time favourite anime, and it's been my favourite for around 6 years now! :DDDDDD This show really taught me that trust and friendship is super important. You can't always go on to deal with things alone, even if you think you have the special abilities to do so. Having faith in the people around you and hope that the situation will turn better is key to breaking out of a seemingly never ending cycle of despair and misery. :) I also really like the way how it took so long for the main character to understand the value of trust and friendship, cuz I think this reflects a lot of people in real life. Humans aren't just suddenly convinced that they should seek help from others through only one event, there needs to be many, many of them to really change a human.
higurashi was so similar to the zero escape games imo, i really liked it cuz it felt like a detective mystery, and im genunely puzzled by somethings most mystery anime makes it too easy to guess
I just finished the 1st season and my starting the 2nd but I’m confused. When does the 2nd take place. Did the time restart again or is the 2nd season before the incident with Rena planning to bomb the school.
This anime is freaking scary. Honestly my sister had to stop watching because she was terrified. I'm crazy enough to continue witching this nightmare fuel.
But why do so many people find it scary? Is it because if the initial impact of sudden change of atmosphere or just gruesome murders? I've watched it knowing it's gory, so I didn't get horrified even a little
Иван Иванов it’s cuz after all the “happy happy rainbow sunshine life is nothing but cotton candy” act the anime just fucking turned on me... Srsly y such an innocent face on such a dreadful thing...
Just a simple person.. with simple needs.. I see higurashi.. and i.... Die, come back to life, forget what happens, and still press the like of the video.
Idk i do find most people at least know what Higurashi is.. but don't talk about it much. I was trying to rewatch it.. Yet i just couldn't get the same feeling as i did back then. It was really good the first time watching it.. But the 2nd time.. idk.. when you know everything that is going to happen.. just lessens the effect drastically.
I wish i could say the same.. but i think it was only because i was rewatching Season 1 but didn't watch season 2. It was one of my favorite horror animes for the longest of time.
Kinda important since it shows Rika as someone who knows what's going on! About them being in some kind of a loop! The part when she said she knows she's going to die, but wants to live, is the saddest ending of an arc!
Imagine if someone makes a live action movie of higurashi. I wonder if it would be as scary, because human pupils in real life cannot dilate like that...
They actually made a live action drama series in 2016. It was six episodes long, then had a sequel mini-series four episodes long. It's a lot better than the movies and I definitely recommend checking it out!
Lucky me, i was introduced to this anime at a young age, not being melded by society into wanting cheap scares and now this has melded me into wanting lasting horror, not sure whether it good or bad
Then watch 'monster' in which there are no supernatural powers and it is one of the most realistic anime. This anime shows the dark side of people and what can people achieve which is worse than monster.
I started watching Monster a long time ago, but stopped and started months ago again just to stop again...its a really slow going boring anime, even if it has a charm it just is bad
@@Burago2k grt yu dropped monster just bcoz u felt it is boring😐. It has one of the best storytelling and character development in anime history. It gets better and better slowly ep by ep. U won't understand until u watch it. And u dont have the right to call it bad without even watching it.
So in your mind, you have to finish a anime to say anything?NO, i watched 9 episodes and the anime IS boring, and i have an opinion.Wont change it, the anime is a prefect way to go to sleep, just like samurai jack
I saw them all and read the mangas (thoroughly recommend those - there's a twist with the twins that was left out of the anime). One thing I could never get is why nobody, not even any of the villagers, ever asks Hanyuu WHY SHE HAS BLOODY HORNS!
I just finished the 1st season and my starting the 2nd but I’m confused. When does the 2nd take place. Did the time restart again or is the 2nd season before the incident with Rena planning to bomb the school.
I love how the Sonozaki Family is supposed to be this omnipresent, all-seeing, ruthlessly violent clan, so you'd think their heir would be the most violent of all. Yet of all the characters, Mion is the only who never actually hurts anyone (as far as the first season) and I'm not sure why but I thought that was brilliant.
mion is actually the younger twin-her and shion switched places for the day and that day the heir was tattooed-forcing them to switch their places permanently
Yay. One of my all time favorite anime was finally covered. Now all we need is Shiki, Shinsekai Yori, Psycho Pass, and Steins Gate. I loved your video by the way
Palmfire Productions Oh my seeing people who watched Shinsekai yori is rare ( this Anime was so amazing!! It's probably one of the most similar to Higurashi )
I can't watch "regular horror" but Higurashi was great. I loved going through all the arcs trying to piece together what was real and what was not. Was there actually a ghost that haunted the village? Were the Sonozaki's the bad guys and behind the ghost stuff? What happened to the photographer and his girlfriend every arc? etc. It was so good.
Regular horror us boring right? Like paranormal... I never find I scary, but all my friends called it scary haha seriously it's just supernatural stuff. When I was a very young boy, I use to be very very scared of horror movies. I was so scared to go out from the middle of the night to use the bathroom. So I piss in the garbage can in my room. I remember the feeling something watching me from in the dark, boy I do miss being scared. I know I can truly be scared if I'm actually in the horror movie or a horror game with VR
I can't help but agree with you. Higurashi has some disturbing scenes that do scar you for life. For example the door scene, the needle scene, satirist torture, and last but not least, what is in the right? Does the curse actually exist? Is there an actual killer? And I also agree that some movies don't add this kind of genre. However I do have two good movies that might scare you or might interest you, Pan's Labyrinth And Oculus Also, I really like your content! Keep up the good work! Brb gonna sub ya!
If you liked the anime then you should definitely consider reading the manga. I really enjoyed reading the manga a few years ago and I remember it being pretty long, but it does go into more detail than the anime, shows more deaths, and the art style of the manga helps to enhance the gore with its more realistic look. I haven't watched the anime, but based on the explanation of the arcs explained in this anime theory video, I didn't hear anything about if the anime talks about Miyo Tankono's past which is elaborated about in the manga, and also includes more very gruesome deaths. The explanation of Tankano's past in the the first book. In Tankono's arc in the manga, there are some deaths not shown in the anime for example, in her arc, (spoilers) she ends up killing the main characters (ex. mion, shion, rika, rina, satoko, etc...) then she fakes her death, and ends up killing of the entire town in the end, with the help of a gang she knows (whom she kills after using them), by using poison gas on them and shooting them. Finally, the manga gets strait to the point when near the start of the first book Tankano's parents die in a train crash as well hundreds of civilians and she is soon sent to a horrible orphanage.
I actually kept it to the first season. I'll eventually make a video about the 2nd season, but it gets into some crazy territory that doesn't necessarily always focus on horror.
DuoReview Oh cool. I didn't know that there was a second season, so I was a little unsure if the anime left out some of the details that the manga included.
Terra O'Rourke It does the suspense better than the anime. For example, in the first arc when Rena was chasing Keiichi, the anime didn't really have a chase at all.
@@greyghost8705 I don't know what paid site you would find it on, but you can watch anime for free on kissanime (with no ads interrupting the videos themselves). kissanime.nz/Anime/Higurashi-no-Naku-Koro-ni.82315/ This is the first season, the second is Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, this third is Higurashi Rei. :D
Nice analysis but I would just mention that you're mixing up the terms Horror and Terror. Horror is more unnatural something like monsters under the bed, giant spiders, things grabbing you in the night etc. Terror is something that creates the feeling of unease the stays with you when you're alone, it's when you feel like something isn't right even though nothing seems wrong at first. Higurashi is more into Terror than Horror
Actually the definition you gave for terror is the definition of dread. Terror is the overwhelming desire to flee from a seen or unseen threat or danger
Aside from the gore and violence This anime so much more, its about friendship and trust to one another its so beautiful to find these group of friends are still standing together strong......
Probably my fourth favorite anime. Too bad Umineko decided to drop everything great about Higurashi. In all honesty, I hate bloodbath horror (kind of a catchall term) because I find it ridiculous. They all seem to think the human body contains several gallons of blood set to explode at any moment. Provokes a disgust reaction instead of a scared one in me. Main reason I absolutely love Lovecraftian horror: barely a drop of blood to be found anywhere. Actually, Disney used to use some pretty good horror now that I think about it.
You hit all the (finger)nails with your theory! I'm scared af about everything horror related, but even I won't get much from most of the horror films those days, they bore me as heck. Higurashi was a lovely surprise, and I'm actually surprised how much it messed with me and how much I liked it. In fact, I think it's one of my favorite animes now!
Honestly, I hate the 'horror' that I've been watching my whole life. Then, I found Higurashi. OH MY GOSH THIS WAS AMAZING. My mind was literally fizzled after the first arc. I had no clue what was going on. It was perfect. I still need to watch the second season, but I've heard it's just as good.
Odd, this anime didn't screw with me mentally that much. Sad though, wish it did. I read a lot of screwy IRL messed up shit so this one didn't make the cut.
For me I already saw the thing 3 times or so so I forgot my first experience of this anime, good thing I watched this video which reminded me of when I saw a scene or 2 out of context on youtube and was terrified, confused, and intrigued beyond measure.
I’m currently rewatching the series for probably the 10th time, and I’m still getting freaked out and noticing new things. Thanks for the review. I used to not particularly like the final arc due to it feeling a bit out of place and seemingly having some possible pacing issues but upon this rewatch, I ended up coming to the conclusion that much of it was kind of a false apology for how the previous arc made the viewer feel (using your logic for the Eye Opener arc). It was amazing to be screwed with some more 😄
I feel u for the last part. Movies and series aren‘t to be actively watched and listened, they are to be consumed. That‘s sad but there‘s still many good stuff around. It‘s just a bit more in the background
Until end of season 1 when the "different timelines" aspect was revealed, to me the different seemingly unconnected arcs felt like the telling and re-tellings of a campfire style ghost story: "Did you hear the one about the small town of Hinamizawa?" That's how it felt to me, and seemed to fit with how the acts and characters would change with each "telling", but core idea was always the same. Kinda wish that had been the style they were going for instead of the multiple arcs.
I never forget this anime. I remember that i had pulled off an all nighter and super sleepy ready to sleep at anytime. My sleepiness was completely gone when i finished it's first episode. So i just finished it in one go... it was hella fun
Cant find an anime like higurashi. So glad they came back with GOU , but I've finished that and it wont come back till July. Now I dont know what anime will keep me on the edge of my seat like higurashi.
Higurashi was on point. This review was on point. Watched everything. I was so confused when I first watched it, not really scared to when I get nightmares but I was initially scared for like 1 whole week and couldn't sleep.
I initially watched it 12, 13 or maybe more years ago and never forgot about this series. Now it popped up on Netflix so I binged the entire season and appreciated it as much or maybe more than when I was a preteen. I think it speaks for itself. For over a decade whenever the topic of horror came up it was always Higurashi that I compared everything to, and nothing seemed to measure up
Higurashi is the only anime that ever scared me. I remember watching it in my dorm room late at night, while everyone was asleep, and always feeling like someone was behind me. It's definitely the sort of horror that sticks with you long after you watch it, and I love that. I actually found it while looking online for good horror anime, so I sort of knew what I was getting into. But you're right, the first episode threw me off a lot--enough, even, that I almost didn't watch anymore because I didn't expect it to get scary. Man, was I wrong! I ended up giving it another shot a couple days later, and couldn't stop. It's been my favorite anime for a couple years now, and I don't see that changing any time soon.
I just finished the 1st season and my starting the 2nd but I’m confused. When does the 2nd take place. Did the time restart again or is the 2nd season before the incident with Rena planning to bomb the school.
I absolutely agree with what you said ! I was 13 when I watched insidious and thought it was so scary. I rewatched it after a couple of years and I actually fell asleep during it. Higurashi is my favourite horror anime and in my top 5 overall. It still manages to creep me out even though I have seen it 3 times already.
I feel the same way kinda tired of cheap jump scares, I am horror fanatic and i love build up. The kind that keeps you up at nights and I'm always looking for horror animes but there just isn't any of this caliber anymore. The closest i can get to this is the yami shibai series which honestly isn't done well but i try to enjoy it nevertheless. (And no i didn't change my picture or name for this post in case you see the irony.)
Excellent video. I feel exactly the same way. Higurashi is one of my all time favorites. I watched Another because I heard it was similar but left that anime feeling like the people that recommended it didn't have the faintest idea was Higurashi was so great.
Not only can I not stand jump scares, I'm hyper sensitive to it. I have -really- good hearing, so I can't watch a "modern horror" movie without just tensing myself for the next jumpscare. That's why I loved higurashi, although I probably watched it way too early in my life. I'm 22. I watched that shit 10 years ago and I still can't forget it.
I completely agree that the horror in Higurashi is the definitive version. Higurashi, among a few other titles, was basically my introduction to the horror anime genre. I knew the basic barebones premise going into it, but no amount of warnings could have prepared me for how scary, unforgettable, and awesome it would really be. Since it was my intro to the genre, and I’m not one to usually watch horror, I had nothing to lose. I enjoyed the slower pacing and build up, and the atmosphere it set up and added onto with each new arc. I felt more attached to the characters, and felt immense empathy and sympathy when one was killed or tortured. Watching the show got me interested in playing the visual novel it’s based on, which takes even longer to set everything up, as each arc was originally presented as its own game. All of this added together made me fall in love with the show even more, while my friends, who watch horror regularly, thought otherwise and dismissed the show, thinking the pacing was too slow or bad. I love Higurashi a lot, and will always remember it fondly.
I love how that this show initially presents itself as a kind-hearted slice of life anime, but, as the series goes on, your expectations get thrown so far out of left field that they're on right field.
I took a break from Higurashi due to the intense nature. Just watching this theory tore open the scares that this anime left me. Enjoyed it a hell of a lot, both theory and anime.
I have to say that Higurashi is easily my favourite anime because of how well structured it is. The story is interesting enough to draw you in and the mystery keeps you there.
I love Higurashi! It's my favorite anime. I think it's really clever and I let out a small scream at one point, and that NEVER happens to me when I watch anime.
I just finished the 1st season and my starting the 2nd but I’m confused. When does the 2nd take place. Did the time restart again or is the 2nd season before the incident with Rena planning to bomb the school.
This series was utterly unnerving and terrifying. Psychological horror, in my opinion, is the type that will cause the most scares, rather than having jumpscares and gore. During the end arcs of Higurashi, things became more and more twisted and horrifying, especially Shion's arc. Her dive into absolute madness and the actions that she committed still make me uneasy.
One of my favorite thing a story creator can do is World Building but doing it in a way that leaves you with questions even after some are answered. I'd say Higurashi does that pretty well. Awesome video by the way Duo!
Thanks dude! I agree with you as well: the world building is amazing because you barely even notice it. It's weirdly sly with it, but you learn a ton after just the first season. =D
The thing about messed me up about this anime is the nail pulling scene I still remember it very vivid to this day I don't think I'll ever forget about it it's planted in my brain
Friend, every praise that you have should be directed to the guy who wrote the VN (Ryukishi07) and his amazing foreshadowing and attention to detail that's used to temper with what the reader thinks as they go through his story. I HIGHLY recommend you look at Umineko no Naku Koro Ni (VISUAL NOVEL, not the anime as , unlike higurashi, it's not a good adaptation). It's written by the same guy after Higurashi and in the VN sphere it's even more famous that already highly acclaimed Higurashi. Without spoiling anything you can read the VN about 3 times and still figure out new amazing things about the story and the characters. Also the OST is 10/10
Me: **hears the OP in the background** **creates dance routine** **video ends** Me: wait what happened **replays video just to listen to the OP again**
Every arc in the show is made brilliantly, not just as a horror, but as a tragedy. The first arc is a brilliantly written and paced mystery/psychological horror, setting you on edge. The second arc is further mystery and more character drama, it sets up the tragic angle of later arcs. Then there's the third arc, a fucked up fever dream straight out of a drug induced nightmare. You understand so little about what is or isn't real that you're disoriented and nervous every bit as much as the characters themselves. The fourth arc is mostly buildup, then we get the fifth arc. The fifth arc not only serves as a fantastically macabre storyline, but it begins the tragedy shift in the second half with the twists and plot events it takes. I could gush about it for paragraphs (in fact, I'm writing an essay to do just that), but I think that sums it up well enough. The sixth arc takes a classical tragic approach, this one a fall from grace. Watching a character descend into paranoia from the perspective of their friends really is heart wrenching, and of course we get the "I remember" scene in episode 25 to really kick us in the chin. The seventh arc is about overcoming all that adversity only for it to be stolen away at the last second. And the eighth arc is a story of how being beaten down on by everything transformed a child into a monster, and it ultimately results in a much deserved happy ending. Every arc was perfectly crafted to fit the story, and it's what makes Higurashi such a brilliant masterpiece in my opinion (other than, you know, the fantastic character cast, the brilliant storylines, excellent storytelling, etc)
I really love how they made arcs for so many reasons....but I did get confused A LOT but my favorite arc was the fourth one and the last one but seriously I was often confused before I had figured it out around the third arc
Hirugashi scares me more then the horror movies I watched I watched annabelle at 7 or 8 years old and I wasn’t even scared but like HIRUGASHI SCARED ME ALOT LMAO
When They Cry series watch order: Higurashi no naku koro ni 2006 Higurashi no naku koro ni Kai Higurashi no naku koro ni Rei Higurashi no naku koro ni Kira (fan services) Higurashi no naku koro ni Outbreak (movie) Higurashi no naku koro ni Gou 2020 Higurashi no naku koro ni Sotsu (coming July 2021) Umineko no naku koro ni (don't watch the umineko anime! It's better you play the visual novel on steam or read the manga)
I love how I've known that Higurashi was gory for so many years due to social media, but I recently watched it, and all I can say is. I'm thrilled. It's dark, it's ominous and it's mysterious ❤️
I love how true this is I love this series, and also I absolutely hate jump scares there chep. I went into Higurashi not knowing it was horror (I just found it in my recommended) I watched the first few episodes and found it boring then I decided to keep watching not knowing what I was getting into (because of Madoka magica and the way it started I gave it a chance) and I loved it so now I make sure people watch at least 5 episodes of the show before they tell me what they thought
I just finished this anime for the first time yesterday after watching episode 1 of the 2020 version. And Rena telling Shino “Oyashiro-San watches you from above your head when your asleep until you admit your sins” that is still lingering in my head.
Hey guys, check out my 2nd channel. Got some cool UA-cam-related content there. =D

DuoReview My main reason why I still can't watch it at all is how much a mindfuck it is. Don't get me wrong I love real horror but not up to David Lynch levels get what im saying?
DuoReview thank you thank you so much this is my favorite anime of all time you will rock real you rock man
DuoReview can I be honest with you I don't agree with you when it comes to another yes there are some jump-scares in another but it also one of those anime that has a lot of psychological fear to it so it does have build up I don't agree with you on that but that's cool we all have different opinions cuz I'm only saying something cuz I saw it on the video is a example of things that have jump-scares but actually there's a lot of psychological fear in that anime if you pay attention to it in my opinion I think anime actually is the only thing that actually has true horror in it most animes are good at catching free old school horror like you used to seeing some horror movies shiki is also a anime that that reminded me of a true genuine horror because it played just like a traditional vampire movie and sometimes I wonder though if maybe if a person says about Higurashi that it's boring maybe they just don't understand anime something tells me they would watch any other thing but that I see a lot of people that are biased towards anime and it doesn't even have to be bad at all it just has to be anime I love anime it could play out just like a movie and I seen some people be like it's bad it's just cartoons that's for children so I think people that usually hate on anime are people that don't even really watch it so anyone hate on Higurashi I would ask them have you seen it I'm just saying I don't think anyone who can sit there and just go always boring probably don't even know because they probably don't even try to watch it no offense to anyone who thinks a show is boring but I don't think that a lot of those people are just people that went and not liking anime from the beginning and had it in their mind it's going to be stupid even though they didn't really check it out they just said it was because I just didn't want to find out but I could be wrong that's just my opinion on the fact
your video was good , it help Me understand the plot of this anime , but I was disappointed at the ending of season 1 , I guest you are right , I am already conditioned to see horror movies now days a lot of jump scares is more entertaining than a slow process horror it get's boring , I lost the old fashion horror feelings but what can I say every person has there taste .
I found it scary the first time, enthralling the second time i watch it since i was finding out so many answers and everything fitting together, and so sad the third time.. especially when i played first arc of the game, this show is heartbreaking once you understand what's going on. :(
Like Rena sees he's getting under the weather and he's drifting away from her, so she goes out of her way to be really nice to him and make him food when his mom is out of town and other stuff only to be continually lied to and rejected in worse and worse ways... D: Ow..
Can we all agree, as a fanbase, that psychological horror is the best type of horror? Especially when mixed well with gore and the such.
I agree 100%. It's easily my favorite type of horror. =D
It's the only horror I can actually watch, because of my pointless gore aversion.
True that
YES
yep. Thats why the shining and higurashi are terrifying. And also why i hate most horror movies
I feel the same way, though I think gore, if combined with the psychological horror, can also work. =D
DuoReview I will give you that. if done correctly gore can be powerful, too often I see it done incorrectly
*cough* I'm 13 and I think gore is odly satisfying *cough* Is there something wrong with me? xD
I still twitch at the fingernail scene.
I know the feeling, trust me.
I have to skip it.
pussies
Anytime that scene is mentioned i feel tingles in my nails. Keep in mind i watched this once 5 years ago
I can never forget
I went into higurashi knowing it's nature but not much else and I have to say, I was still caught off guard and really enjoyed the series overall
That's part of the reason why I loved it so much to be honest. I knew what it was, but the first 2 episodes threw me off. I actually wondered if I was watching the right show. XD
Lily 100% agree with you man Higurashi was the best horror anime ever I loved it
DuoReview when I watched season 2.
Hans Wurst I think the most sadistic part in all Higurashi was Rika committing suicide and shion laughing about it
have you seen ghost hunt? that show is very good horror too :)
@@donteo508 ik he was gaining the levels of the hinimizawa syndrome and Rika was to dumb to figure this out... Wait...
YESSS
havent seen the 2nd season so no spoilers pls, but if that was true then how do u explain him cutting his own neck after?
Right? I’d always enjoy that tingly sensation of chills crawling down my spine whenever Mion did that insane laugh.
yeahhhh saaaaaame
A lot of people say that they're scarred by the show and can't watch on and things, but tbh I think this show is completely fine and amazing!!!!! Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is my all time favourite anime, and it's been my favourite for around 6 years now! :DDDDDD
This show really taught me that trust and friendship is super important. You can't always go on to deal with things alone, even if you think you have the special abilities to do so. Having faith in the people around you and hope that the situation will turn better is key to breaking out of a seemingly never ending cycle of despair and misery. :)
I also really like the way how it took so long for the main character to understand the value of trust and friendship, cuz I think this reflects a lot of people in real life. Humans aren't just suddenly convinced that they should seek help from others through only one event, there needs to be many, many of them to really change a human.
The second and third season weren't scary tho the 2nd season was arguably the best one
higurashi was so similar to the zero escape games imo, i really liked it cuz it felt like a detective mystery, and im genunely puzzled by somethings most mystery anime makes it too easy to guess
No wonder I can't sleep. When they cry kept me up all night.
But why do so many people find it scary? Is it because if the initial impact of sudden change of atmosphere or just gruesome murders? I've watched it knowing it's gory, so I didn't get horrified even a little
If you can read the visual novel even after watching the anime that thing scare the shit out of me
Pussy
Иван Иванов it’s cuz after all the “happy happy rainbow sunshine life is nothing but cotton candy” act the anime just fucking turned on me...
Srsly y such an innocent face on such a dreadful thing...
Just a simple person.. with simple needs.. I see higurashi.. and i.... Die, come back to life, forget what happens, and still press the like of the video.
I know the feeling. It's just sad that so few people talk about Higurashi to begin with now. XD
I actually loved watching it the second time surprisingly. =D
I wish i could say the same.. but i think it was only because i was rewatching Season 1 but didn't watch season 2.
It was one of my favorite horror animes for the longest of time.
Why do they come back to life?
Higurashi is fucked up and confusing but damn is it amazing. You have to stick with it though.
I agree 100%, but to be fair I was going to stick with it the moment things got creepy. =D
You skipped the Time Killing chapter that shows Rika when she was younger.
With the reporter guy who had a pregnant wife.
@@towelgirl21 akasaka
yes that's actually arc 4 as it's about rika. each of the beginning arcs are about somebody
Kinda important since it shows Rika as someone who knows what's going on! About them being in some kind of a loop! The part when she said she knows she's going to die, but wants to live, is the saddest ending of an arc!
@@androgynousmaggot9389 i just assumed that rika was just possessed by a demon and that the original rika didnt actually know anything
Imagine if someone makes a live action movie of higurashi. I wonder if it would be as scary, because human pupils in real life cannot dilate like that...
I believe there is already a live action Higurashi, I don't remember it being that long through.
There are 2 live action movies. I think they adapt the first and the last arc of the 1st season.
There are live action movies, but... They're not all that great....
They actually made a live action drama series in 2016. It was six episodes long, then had a sequel mini-series four episodes long. It's a lot better than the movies and I definitely recommend checking it out!
What live action movies? Those are like the Umineko anime... *they don't exist*.
Lucky me, i was introduced to this anime at a young age, not being melded by society into wanting cheap scares and now this has melded me into wanting lasting horror, not sure whether it good or bad
Today's horror in anime only includes either people with super natural strength or monsters, which are everywhere...the real horror is with people...
Actual, the real horror is a genetic parasite and paranoia...
So in your mind, you have to finish a anime to say anything?NO, i watched 9 episodes and the anime IS boring, and i have an opinion.Wont change it, the anime is a prefect way to go to sleep, just like samurai jack
who else ACTUALLY watched the 2nd season and everything else
instead of just the 1st season... i need to watch this amazing anime again
JH Anime Piano i did
Where can u watch it
I saw them all and read the mangas (thoroughly recommend those - there's a twist with the twins that was left out of the anime). One thing I could never get is why nobody, not even any of the villagers, ever asks Hanyuu WHY SHE HAS BLOODY HORNS!
Watch season 1, then season 2 and then season 1 again. EVERYTHING WILL MAKE SENSE
I loved your video by the way
Man, that's a lot of anime to cover. XD
I'm glad you enjoyed the video though. =D
Palmfire Productions Oh my seeing people who watched Shinsekai yori is rare ( this Anime was so amazing!! It's probably one of the most similar to Higurashi )
Ooh, Shinsekai Yori is great too...
Wilhelm Dietz I thought it was boring as heck for the first 18 episodes then mediocre after that, why do you like it so much?
I can't watch "regular horror" but Higurashi was great. I loved going through all the arcs trying to piece together what was real and what was not. Was there actually a ghost that haunted the village? Were the Sonozaki's the bad guys and behind the ghost stuff? What happened to the photographer and his girlfriend every arc? etc. It was so good.
I agree with you completely. Higurashi's arcs aren't just fantastic in a horror way, but really do make the plot a whole lot more interesting. =D
It's difficult for movies to scare me, but this anime scared me a ton. XD
@@duoreview7492 same

How 'bout seven months later? :p
How about a year later?
How about now?
Hey give us an update!
However I do have two good movies that might scare you or might interest you,
Pan's Labyrinth
And
Oculus
Also, I really like your content! Keep up the good work!

Terra O'Rourke I agree. The manga is even better than the anime if that is even possible, lol. And the SN is the best version ofc.
The manga is genius, the drawings are soooo great.
And the SN is even more complete.
"... Is going to have nails through his fingers, that's enough to screw with the viewer."
Did anyone else notice the pun (sorta)?

Nice analysis but I would just mention that you're mixing up the terms Horror and Terror. Horror is more unnatural something like monsters under the bed, giant spiders, things grabbing you in the night etc. Terror is something that creates the feeling of unease the stays with you when you're alone, it's when you feel like something isn't right even though nothing seems wrong at first.
Higurashi is more into Terror than Horror
I was using the definitions of horror and terror as defined in the review of Another by Under the Scope. XD
Actually the definition you gave for terror is the definition of dread. Terror is the overwhelming desire to flee from a seen or unseen threat or danger
@@lucalinadreemur9448 Which still happens in the anime and that's the commenters point
“Why are horrors less like Higurashi and more like paranormal activity?”
Cuz good horror takes effort and executives want money NOW!
Aside from the gore and violence
This anime so much more, its about friendship and trust to one another its so beautiful to find these group of friends are still standing together strong......
By rena killing that guy in the last ark she simultaneously saved satoko and herself from a shity life
Probably my fourth favorite anime.
I strongly recommend you to read umineko's manga! Manga is great!
菲尔琦 and the VN
Umineko is supposed to be completely different to Higurashi. Why would you even compare the two?
The Umineko anime genuinely hurts my heart. Umineko is a beautiful successor to Higurashi. It's a damn shame the anime couldn't capsulate it's beauty
The soundtrack for Umineko is great though
I watched it for the soundtrack
You hit all the (finger)nails with your theory! I'm scared af about everything horror related, but even I won't get much from most of the horror films those days, they bore me as heck. Higurashi was a lovely surprise, and I'm actually surprised how much it messed with me and how much I liked it. In fact, I think it's one of my favorite animes now!
There's something about the opening 1 songs that really gives me an uneasy feeling, idk why but I love it
I remember wandering around the UA-cam as a small kid and seeing the compilation of all deaths in Higurashi, it has altered my brain chemistry
Please make an Assassination Classroom theory. There are endless possibilities.
Yeah I know there is. I intend on covering it soon (hopefully). =D
For me I already saw the thing 3 times or so so I forgot my first experience of this anime, good thing I watched this video which reminded me of when I saw a scene or 2 out of context on youtube and was terrified, confused, and intrigued beyond measure.
4 years on and Higurashi is still iconic for me
I don't like horror but Higurashi horror is a slow burner and just the type that I like
You missed Rika's arc! Maybe the most important? Definitely the saddest one!
It was amazing to be screwed with some more 😄
I was less interested in the horror and more fascinated in how in depth and elaborate the plot and development was
I feel u for the last part.
For over a decade whenever the topic of horror came up it was always Higurashi that I compared everything to, and nothing seemed to measure up
When They Cry is such an amazing series.
I watched this over a decade ago
And I still remember it
I just finished the 1st season and my starting the 2nd but I’m confused.
I remember watching this when I was a kid, could never remember the name but it always stuck with me as being super creepy
currently watching Higurashi:When They Cry GOU, thank you for this! (havent watched the og yet)
Neither have I but I'm going to start it tomorrow
the og is really good
Not only can I not stand jump scares, I'm hyper sensitive to it.
Did Higurashi got remastered? the quality in your Video is amazing!
Loli-Mecha Overlord from Egypt 2020 AND WE’RE FINALLY GETTING ONE
I'm a recent anime fan, and Higurashi is one of my favorite animes! And I enjoyed the slow beginning! I was honestly surprised it wasn't more popular.
your thought Higurashi the ultimate horror. You earned more subs XD
I love how that this show initially presents itself as a kind-hearted slice of life anime, but, as the series goes on, your expectations get thrown so far out of left field that they're on right field.
“It’s generally considered taboo” well that’s one way to put it.
You are so wise sir. It's refreshing to hear someone else go into the "instant gratification" territory. I agree with everything you are saying.
Oh god I still remember the scene where so-and-so got her nails torn off *shivers*
Ugh... That scene still messes with me. XD
I watched this anime about 4 years ago and the nail pulling scene still haunts me to this day.
I completely agree with you, i love this kind of horror, jumpscares and atmosphereless horror movies/series just feel hollow and boring to me.
I took a break from Higurashi due to the intense nature. Just watching this theory tore open the scares that this anime left me.
Enjoyed it a hell of a lot, both theory and anime.
2 topics in 1!!!! OOOOH i sure do like me a good bargain.
And unlike most stores, I didn't raise the price before doing it. ;)
2 for the price of 3 XD
Higurashi, Shiki, and Devilman are my top favorite horror anime of all time.
In short it's a masterpiece. Well planned, carefully thought anime. I wonder if students studying psychology would love this
Hmmm.....
That actually happens to me a lot to be honest. I'm easily excited if the anime is really good. =D
I just finished the 1st season and my starting the 2nd but I’m confused. When does the 2nd take place. Did the time restart again or is the 2nd season before the incident with Rena planning to bomb the school.
Ten years later and I still remember every episode...
When they cry is- just watch it it's amazing.
I'm done watching the original Higurashi and now I'm on the 2020 sequal of it, it's really good
I'm glad this is being remade! Hopefully it'll make more people get interested in it!
The Anime's title means: Kira wears it without Higurashi. Could this mean somthing?
This series was utterly unnerving and terrifying. Psychological horror, in my opinion, is the type that will cause the most scares, rather than having jumpscares and gore. During the end arcs of Higurashi, things became more and more twisted and horrifying, especially Shion's arc. Her dive into absolute madness and the actions that she committed still make me uneasy.
I remember watching the English dub of this, I never knew that this whole anime was a timeline kinda thing.
I remember the first episode I watched was her getting her nails ripped out then shion killing satoko
The thing about messed me up about this anime is the nail pulling scene I still remember it very vivid to this day I don't think I'll ever forget about it it's planted in my brain
yuki yuki yuki how I love my yuki he's mine alone until t
he end... (GUMMY Bear / future diary reference)
rick and morty why you brought Yuno Gasai in this Video? .-.
Also the OST is 10/10
At the end of the final arc didnt u all see the part of rika saying she gets to play this never ending june month again
these scare the heck out of me but i love them ❤ keep up the good work m8!
Me: **hears the OP in the background**
**creates dance routine**
**video ends**
Me: wait what happened
**replays video just to listen to the OP again**
Im glad that higurashi when they cry new was my first taste of horror and now im hooked on higurashi's horror methods
I have a theory about Rosario+vampire, that tsukune it's actually a monster
KevinplaysCoD Ghost how's he a monster
Spoiler
After the big fight where mako gives him her blood he dies become a ghoul afterwards
Nediojon then later on becomes a vampire
When you thinly you can handle anything after watching this anime. Then see ReZero or Madoka Magica.
I really love how they made arcs for so many reasons....but I did get confused A LOT but my favorite arc was the fourth one and the last one but seriously I was often confused before I had figured it out around the third arc
I loved it! I love horror. I read the manga for the second part. Lived it.
Yeah this is my favorite horror of all time still to this day. =D
Hirugashi scares me more then the horror movies I watched I watched annabelle at 7 or 8 years old and I wasn’t even scared but like HIRUGASHI SCARED ME ALOT LMAO
When They Cry series watch order:
Higurashi no naku koro ni 2006
Higurashi no naku koro ni Kai
Higurashi no naku koro ni Rei
Higurashi no naku koro ni Kira (fan services)
Higurashi no naku koro ni Outbreak (movie)
Higurashi no naku koro ni Gou 2020
Higurashi no naku koro ni Sotsu (coming July 2021)
Umineko no naku koro ni (don't watch the umineko anime! It's better you play the visual novel on steam or read the manga)
This guy felt the need to elaborate on why stabbing a small child is uncomfortable for the onlooker.
The one thing I learned from this anime was to always appreciate your fingernails
