- Hello ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Anime Theory, where today we take a look at Higurashi/When They Cry, and discover the dark secrets behind one of the show's most uncomfortable arcs.

The fucked up thing is that the author gives explicit hints for this theory to be true in the novels.

I partially agree with this theory. It's heavily implied even in the manga and novels that there was some sort of sexual abuse involved. In the VN, there's a specific TIP from his POV in which he thinks about how Satoko looked a lot like her mother, who was a real beauty and that even though she couldn't satisfy him sexually, he could make her "wash his back in the bath" or something.
But Teppei's main motive wasn't just to victimize Satoko. As you see in Kai, he actually came to blackmail Satoko into revealing where her stepfather's inheritance was, since he was all out of money. He'd become bored of Satoko a couple of days into living with her and decided to leave once he had the money, but only after "completely destroying her."

Teppei's a sadistic bastard alright and he enjoys the sense of power he gets when he's abusing someone weaker, but his goal was the bankbook, not taking Satoko captive forever. He plans to leave after he's squeezed out all the "entertainment" he can out of her.
The TIPS also contain a record of Satako's abuse. I don't remember the exact amount, but there was a confirmed percentage of sexual abuse.
read the vn again, he specifically says he's waiting for a few years before he would look at her sexually. he's not attracted to small kids

If may be so bold as to add on my two cents to your theory, specifically to the "wanting her body" portion while yes all the points you brought up are valid and make sense, I feel like you might have skipped out on a crucial detail. The detail is the subtle hint that satakuo was had her body used by her uncle. In one of the episodes in arc 3 or 7(it's been a while but I still have vivid memory of this series) there is a scene in which satakuo was being strangely quiet at lunch and when the MC touches her shoulder, she flips outs, head to the deepest corner of the classroom screaming her head off about not wanting to touched only for her to vomit shortly after. This scene I think was a huge red flag that her uncle had moved his timetable of the gromming her into be his "wife" *shudder*

You're just overthinking it. Satoko's issues are mixed in with the fact she's a Level 5 Hinamizawa Syndrome patient. To put it more simply, the reaction she had to Keiichi is the same reaction she had to her parents,and her parents didn't exactly mistreat her or anything (she pushed them down a cliff for apparently no reason other than hallucinations born from extreme levels of stress). The sound novels confirm that Teppei did plan on making Satoko into his "girl", but that it was in the future as he had no interests in "brats". That's how he literally says it in a scene where we are privy to his internal thoughts.

Igneel Seishouki- Yes, I tend to agree. What you have pointed out (to anyone who may be unsure) is that this "dark secret" theory that we are apparently not aware of... Is indeed already pointed out with actual reactions & facts throughout the series.

I watched all of Higurashi (including all the OVAs) this Halloween and I felt really bad for Sakoto. The part where the whole town went to save her was heartwarming as hell. I know Teppei got his ass kicked by Keiichi and Rena in the first season, but I kinda hoped he'd get another on screen death in Kai for all the on-screen abuse he gave Sakoto.
I understand that Higurashi isn't really well known for its deep stories and plots. But I agree with this theory. The series is known for having awful things happen to every character. I never understood the hate Satako got. She was a young girl who was the town's pariah because of her parents' support of the dam. It's also shown that she was the one who killed her parents (by pushing them off a cliff in a state of sickness). She has no brother, as he's gone. So, no one is left to support her.
As someone who has seen how small towns are... less than stellar to outsiders, I can only imagine how it is in 1980s Japan, a country that is well known for the importance it places on reputation.
Not to mention, the girl is very young herself. She has lost everyone close to her before she hit the double digits. Her only friends are people at school who turn on her, or vanish every arc.
Hell, when she is being stabbed over and over again by Shion/Mion, she takes it because she feels she DESERVES it for being such a burden on everyone.
Combine this unstable mind with a slimy uncle, the girl's going to be a wreck. I believe that he would probably start pimping her out once he realized he could.
We've seen how gross and perverse some of the men are in Higurashi (comedy aside, we've seen how... dark things can get, especially if you read the manga like I did). So this isn't too far a stretch.
The Hojos are the town's blame for everything, Sataoko is all that's left.
This girl had a dark furture ahead if the rest of the cast didn't get involved.
@Jonathan Holland Well, to be this person, the VN does certainly expand upon the background and motives of all of the characters much better than the anime. Of course it took me about 150 hours to get through the VN... That said the anime does a good job at getting the essential background and motives of the characters, albeit a bit rushed. Personally I do not recall what is or is not in the anime as I read the VN arc then watched the anime anime arc. The anime is quick, a single "day" in the VN took the same amount of time as a full anime arc, lol. Honestly the VN does a great job at getting into Rena's head in the 6th arc and lays out extensively Tanoko's lore of the virus via Rena's POV.
I also learned a lot about Japanese perspectives on WWII that I have not seen elsewhere, and it actually has lore that is at least decent in its biological feasibility (not everything is sensible, but decent amount actually makes sense from current understandings of evolutionary theory).
And this is why I feel people don't really understand Gou/Sotsu but mainly Gou/Meguri. Satoko's been through hell and then her closest friend leaves her behind. I completely understand why Satoko got so depressed and angry. It's like after everything she's been through, Rika leaving is just more salt in the wound.
And this is why I loved that moment when Keiichi kills Teppei. He was shoutting for it. I totally wanted him dead and for once, the main character, although under the effects of the Himanizawa Syndrome, did it right. Well, kind of it. Anyway, I wanted Satoko's uncle dead, and what we got was a brutal death with a metal bat. When I saw that scene, I have to say that it was beautyful as hell.
Basically, for this and many other reasosns, Higurashi series are one of my very favourite animes.
it's way longer, way better executed, and way more brutal in the light novel. I'd say to try and find it, if you can, because keiichi killing teppei was long as fuck, awkward, but very, very real. Ryukishi is a damn good writer
@Jonathan Holland What I'm saying is, did YOU pay attention? All the events before the main character's deaths are the same in each world. The only difference is how they die, and who goes crazy and kills who. In this world, it was already destined to fail. It just so happened that Keiichi took it upon himself to kill her uncle. But notice how it did not happen in the other worlds. It's all different. I honestly don't think It has anything to do with morals because like I said, Rika had been dealing with this shit for hundreds upon hundreds of years. It's about Rika finding the perfect world where her and her friends survive, not about morals mate.

That really surprised me to be honest. Makes you think that even most irredeemable POS can change doesn't it? Yeah i know he hasn't completely changed and he was still an overbearing person to his niece... But honestly that was 100 times better than before.

I don't remember Higurashi well, and my memories between what was in the anime and what was in the games are kind of blurry but this is something I'm pretty sure is accepted as facts tho?

In the manga during the end of the Curse Killing Arc everyone in hinamizawa are killed and of course Keiichi is the only one to survive for now. But Satoko is confirmed to be missing which could be implied she was captured by the Wild Dogs and tortured by Takano which she said in the Massacre arc of Kai. Which makes this theory even more dark and sad

@@AR-cf9di its heavily implied in Matsuribayashi that Takano was going to experiment on satoko's brain in Tokyo if she didn't recover from Hinamizawa Syndrome that's why she's gone at the end of Tataragoroshi (Satoshi is implied to be experimented on in every single world that the Great Hinamizawa Disaster happens because Irie isn't there to help him)

When I was I think 12, I watched this, Elfen Lied, and Corpse party because my friend told me to. (I don't really remember the situation since it happened almost 3 years ago but whatever) I was downright traumatized, I legit am somewhat scared of scissors and nails. O_O

While it does make sense, take also in mind that Satoko has reported several times to have been abused (highlight the word "abused" here) in the past by her stepfather/s. If you've read the VN, you'd know her mother was kind of...well, let's only say she dated with a lot of guys, which angered Satoko because she didn't want to fake a smile to each of them. Also, the guy who fell off with her mother was actually pretty kind to her, yet she despised him because of her mother. Obviously, all these attempts weren't true at all, so she lost credibility with the parental care guys.
That's an important point there too,since that's why Hinamizawa is invading their offices.

I've always thought from her depth of depression and despair that that was the case...
It would explain why Satoko puked after Keiichi gives her a headpat. If he abused her, she would feel disgusted if another man put his hands on her. I might have some events mixed up though, since I've seen it over 5 years ago.

I'm the kind of moron to pick a favorite candy that's only available one month out of the year: robin eggs!
I just played through all of the Higurashi VN's last month, and I can confirm that this isn't a theory - it's true. In one of the last VN's, I believe it was a small segment in the seventh VN, we get insight into the mindset of Teppei. It explains that he's waiting for Satoko to reach a more 'mature' age in order to start making moves on her. I didn't really see anyone mention this in the comment section here, which surprised me, so I thought I'd mention this fact now. I realise this video is some years old, but it's better late than never, lol. The seventh VN goes into detail about the nature of abuse, particularly in children, at pretty decent length, with this theory being confirmed as truth when the VN chose to analyse Teppei's thoughts.
But I will say one thing:
I'm in the middle of rewatching the Higurashi anime (original), and in my humble opinion, it doesn't hold up very well. Due to time restraints, lack of information and certain plot alterations/deviations, this isn't the best way to enjoy the series. I've only read the VN's so far, but I can safely say this is easily the better choice of the two, even though I admit it's nice to be able to hear the character's being voiced (maybe the Switch version of the VN's monopolise on this fact - I wouldn't know because I played the original VN's). There's only been few, mostly unimportant instances where I believe the changes the anime made have been improvements. Other than that, it really isn't as good. Still, I do think it's enjoyable, just not the optimal way to consume the series.

Coming back to this theory 5 years later. Yeah, this theory is probably true... No wonder even if Teppei became a wholesome uncle in the Gou and Sotsu series to Satoko, Satoko still brutally killed him... People might think that Satoko did it to messed with Rika but I do think she used this messed up loops with Teppei and motivation to exact her revenge towards Teppei and then trapping Rika in the loops forever
Speaking of dark, I just thought of something crazy. What if Ghost in the Shell takes place in a world in which the Axis Powers were victorious?
Despite the high japanese population, I heard that the city in which it takes place is modeled after Hong Kong.
It would also explain a lot of the worlds issues like imperialism not being so frowned upon as it is in our world (America actually becoming a fully fledged empire) and the advances in technology and human augmentation that could be due to human experimentation remaining legal for a longer time.
I'm not saying that they remained in power, perhaps governmental collapses or reforms happened eventually, but that world still feels its effects.
But America is not imperialistic. When has the US ever invaded a country and then annexed it? As very well made fun of in A Mouse that Roared, when they defeat a country in a war, the US goes and gives them lots of money and other forms of help. A company going multinational is just a company creating business opportunities in other countries and American companies are far from alone in that. Also, in GitS, we have the UN and other such organizations. A better example is The Man in the High Castle, by Philip K. Dick, where he shows such a situation would doom the Axis regime to downfall, as fascist government are, in the long run, unable to sustain themselves both politically and economically.
I'm pretty sure this is actually canon. In the original games, there's a Tips section going over the child abuse in Hinamizawa and as the statistics for sexual abuse cases in Hinamizawa are read, a picture of a defeated-looking Satoko comes up, along with an ominous noise.
Higurashi is definitely one of my most memorable anime seen, and that's out of over 1,000 I've seen to completion. Wait, before you judge, I was bedridden for years and couldn't do much. I'd say it ranks in the top 10. I have this thing where if I start watching an anime, I MUST finish it (with the exception of hentai, I don't care for that, and some romance-only anime which bore me). Higurashi left me with that "Wait, what the... how did? Did I black out? What?" feeling in the first season. Second season was my favorite.
As for her uncle, I'd sever his limbs without killing him, leave him locked up and make sure he couldn't kill himself, then torture him every other day at random times. This way he would suffer more than just dying. You mess with a kid, and I'm around, I don't care what the law says, I won't kill a person, but I'll make sure you never touch a child again. That's my trigger. That's the only thing that makes me become violent. Sure, I'll defend myself or protect my family and friends, but as far as being flat out cruel, only that would trigger me. The rest of the time I'm just a happy person who has never hurt people (well, other than defending myself when I was growing up since so many people were bigger than myself, as I am 5' 2". Go ahead and make jokes, I find them funny. I'm literally a red-headed step-child.)
If you don't watch the other seasons, you don't realize what's going on in this series. One more edit. Who is to say he didn't already start doing... that? Across from my neighborhood there are 16 child molesters just out and free.

Probably one of the greatest mystery anime since it gives us the chance to play the detective and solve the mystery.
All hints are provided in the first season itself, second season is just for checking if our answer is true.

This was the first anime I watched as an actual anime fan and not a kid watching "cartoons" on toonami in the early 2000s before I knew what anime actually was, I'm happy I'm not the only one who watched this as my first "anime" ;p

Insightful theory! I honestly believe that's exactly what Ryukishi_07 intended to imply. Remember that in _Tsumiboroshi-hen,_ while Rena is eavesdropping on he and Rina's conversation, Rina jokes that maybe she should dump Teppei and really marry Mr. Ryuuguu, because the latter spoils her with expensive gifts so often. Teppei responds, "Whatever, idiot. Your body can't be satisfied by anyone but me." You can tell that, even though he's playing it cool, the jab cut a little deeper than Rina intended. I think that he does want to ensure a tight rein on his sexual slave, whoever and however it may be. (After all, their "badger game" _is_ an indirect pimping of Rina, if combined with a con.)
By the way, my favorite candy is Milky Way Midnight Dark (referred to as "Mars Bar Dark" in the UK).

You should make a theory on Fuurude Rika and Hanyuu
I played the Higurashi VN after playing Umineko, so the timeloops weren't confusing for me. Umineko had 3 witches which were the alter egos of Takano (Lambdadelta), Rika(Bernkastel) and Hanyuu(Feathrine), that's what connects both the stories.
So i played Higurashi to find about their origin and past which was pretty emotional and sad.
Basically her uncle has little man syndrome to the extreme. He hates strong women and so he goes after young women and girls that are weak and easy to break emotionally. My aunt Allison had a husband like that and he was the worst . So basically this guy is my aunt’s ex husband in anime way.
