  • With David Hyman, professional tour guide. Jabbal Musa ( The Mountain of Moses) is located in the southern part of the Sinai peninsula, and is one of the summits of the granite rock masiffe called " The high mountain region". At the foot of the mountain early Christians have pointed out the site of the burning bush and the monastery of Saint Cathrine was built on this site. Two paths lead from the monastery up to the summit of Mount Sinai. Our video is about our climb to the top using the more moderate "Camel Trail". The other path is made of 3500 stone steps that were built by the monks from the monastery over the years. The steps are called the steps of repentance. at the time of our visit, we were told that this path is closed and therefore we returned by the way we climbed. The climb can be done on camelback but we decided to test our lungs and we climbed all the way up. Many coffee shops allow nice rest stops on the way up, and we stopped at them all for coffee and a chat with the bedouin owners. about halfway up we reached "Elijah's basin"' which is a small valley tucked within the mountains. This is where the monks located the cave of Elijah on Mount Horeb, as Mentioned in the Book of Kings. The final part of the hike is the 750 steps leading from Elijah's basin to the summit. We reached the top and were rewarded with the most amazing views of the desert all around is just the vast mountains of Sinai. On the summit are the ruins of the 6th-century basilica build in by emperor Justinian. The basilica was destroyed by earthquakes and from the old rocks, the modern chapel was built. Next to the chapel, where the bell is the locked door leads to the "Rock Cleft" where Moss stood when God passed by him in his Glory ( Exodus 22, 23). The Mosque was added in the 17th century as Moses is an important prophet in Islam. Under the mosque is a small cave that is the place Moses fasted for 40 days and nights while he was waiting to receive the Law ( The Torah).
The walk down takes about an hour and a half, depending on your pace. We walked slowly, enjoying the moment, contemplating the significance and talking about an important topic: The Law as the source of Authority, can it stand on it own or must it be granted by a supreme power such as God himself.
Many thanks to all the people who made our Journey to Mount Sinai so wonderful:
The Republic of Egypt for allowing Israelis to enter via Taba pass for 14 days without a Visa
Out Driver Muhammad for all his great insights and generosity
Out guide Mohamed for leading up as and down the mountain safely and for explaining the meanings of the sites and the places
Out hosts at Sheikh Musa Bedouin camp in the Village of Saint Catherine
All the wonderful Bedouin men from the Jebaliya tribe, My deepest respect to you all for preserving your ancient ways and traditions throughout so many centuries in this harsh land
And finally to my heart and soul, Shiri. You are the reason I do all these crazy things. Without you - I am nothing.

As a Muslim, I found immense tranquility and solace in that place.
In the Quran, it's depicted as the singular spot on Earth where Allah's presence is revealed.
    The mountain trembles in awe,
And the sight of His majesty causes it to crumble.

      You, too, David.
I'm happy that, so far, I've not seen you have to contend with scorpions, snakes or spiders.
My compliments to the inhabitants and tourists. I've never seen any litter on the streets of the cities or the ancient sites. Whereas, Cairo and Rome are filthy.
There is one exception. The site is a dug out meeting place with stairs used as seats and a baptismal. The lady said this is where James, the brother of Jesus, met with believers.
Unfortunately, tourists throw their food trash in it. No trash receptacles available?

David, I am having a problem, maybe you can help. Moses was sent into the desert and arrived at the base of mt. Sini. In exodus when he took gods people out of bondage he crossed the red sea. Just asking for clarity, Mt. Sini cannot be in Egypt but the bigger question is since moses arrived at Mt.Sini before the exodus when he spoke with the I Am he never crossed the sea. I am confused. I think Mt. Sini is actually in Saudia Arabia. According to biblical accounts. Can anyone help with this? I am still trying to learn.

Thank you, a very informative and visual experience of such a historical place. Two things (1) How long up and how long down (2) why would there be a mosque ? Is the mosque there because the muslim faith had not diverged at that point, and so was a holy place?

Hi. We walked in avery slow pace and made many stops. It took us three hours up and 1.5 hours down. The mountain is also holy for Islam, and therefore the Mosque.

    (04 October 2023, Wdnesday, 02:00 p.m. EST)
Unknown to the thousands who climb Mt. Sinai (Gebel Musa) in the dead of night to witness the sunrise, is that the ancient Egyptian myths understood that the golden orb of the sun, at Sunrise, was envisioned as being the birth of the Golden Calf.
Tomb art shows a small solar bark with an Egyptian standing at its tiller as a helmsman, seated before him is Horus, in human form with a hawk's head, standing on four legs, before Horus, is a hornless bull-calf. Hovering over the bull-calf's back is the sacred Polar Star.
Old Kingdom Pyramid Texts have Pharaoh Pepi, Dynasty 6, pleading, circa 2300 BC:
"O Horus, do not leave me boatless for I am a Golden Calf born of Heaven."
The rising sun was also envisioned to a resurrected dead Pharaoh in the form of a Golden Calf.
Pharaoh was also addressed in titles as "the strong bull," who overcomes Egypt's enemies.
At times Pharaoh has a bull's tail affixed to his lower back in a ritualized race.
Pharaoh Pepi says he is a Golden Calf born of heaven, that is to say heaven is conceived as being a female cow, at night this heavenly-sky-cow has stars on her body, in art work. Other times she has a golden colored body, her epithet being nub, meaning "the golden one."
She is the bovine goddess called Hat-Hor or Hathor, patroness of miners working copper mines in the south Sinai.
Annually, her devotees honor her with drunken, naked, loud, noisey song and dance, to thereby emulate her.
In drinking to excaess, wine and beer, to become drunk, her devotees, in effect become a drunk Hat-Hor, thus partaking of her spirit, rather like Christians partaking of Christ's body or Eucharist: the bread and wine being metaphysical substitutes for Jesus' flesh and blood. All this taking place in the southern Sinai at Gebel Serabit el Khadim, just a few miles north of Gebel Musa and Santa Catherina Greek Orthodox Monastery.
For more info google Mattfled Mt. Sinai, Golden Calf.

I appreciate this video for actually being centerd around the traditional Mt Sinai. A lot of content is about new theories/ conspiracy theories about the Mountain being in Saudi-Arabia. This Mountain is the one who has all the tradition. It has the monastry, all the christian pilgrimage stories etc.
This Mountain is a important piece of christian history and despite any theories deserves respect on it's own. I hope one day I can go there during a fun trip to sharm-el-sheikh.

This is definitely not the true Mt Sinai. the Bible says its in Arabia, in the locality where Midian was. Moses fled from Egypt to Midian. It was there he had the burning bush encounter in mt Horeb. The Lord told him it would be a sign to him that he would worship God in that same mountain which was located in Midian. Interestingly, God introduced the Commandments with the phrase, "I am the Lord who has brought you out of Egypt." How then could they have been in Egypt still, since this site is in Egyptian territory. The red sea crossing was their exit from Egypt into Arabia where Paul states that Horeb was. The true site is most likely Jabel Al Lawz in Arabia.
