  • Hey Agent this is how I became involved in the technology of Software Defined Radio (SDR). You will see the many things that inspire others to learn and grow with SDR. If this inspired or reminded you of how you got into radio, electronics or computers.. share it with someone. Pass along the inspiration.
I need your help. What I've discovered and need help with is shared here. Use the comments to ask questions or to help and engage others.
If you want to help support the mission and be a part of helping figure this out, you can further support by getting "The Right Tools for the Job" (see below) or support via Patreon or Kofi.
    / tunedsignal

You can get most of the SDR and Radio gear I mention from these Amazon Affiliate links.
Amazon will give me a commission (at no cost to you) and I'll be able to get more tools to continue the mission.
    Thanks for your help.
I put considerable effort to try and create engaging, helpful and fine tuned content for you. - if you would like to support me on that mission then consider subscribing to the channel - I would truly appreciate it.
Viewers have requested links for this video. See below for other links.
Tune lower frequencies with the RTLSDR - amzn.to/4ezNFNk
If you have an HackRF get a metal case - amzn.to/4exMnT1
TXCO for the HackRF makes the HackRF signal more stable
    amzn.to/45BYlqH
This is the best deal for a HackRF kit.. you get the metal case, a TXCO, antenna and some VERY useful connectors - amzn.to/3VBxabf
HackRF only (in plastic case) - amzn.to/4ca8rlg
The Right Tools for the Job
If you are new to the mission.. Start with this SDR.
I have many of these in my tool collection.
    amzn.to/3MnQJAv
Or get the latest version here if it is unavailable (Note the v4 is black unlike the silver one in this video. This unit has some advantages at lower frequencies with minor decrease in signal. I have one also.. it works nicely))
    amzn.to/3GYp05Q
This budget SDR has a great antenna
    amzn.to/3Ms0FJo
Already have an SDR but you want an antenna kit?
    amzn.to/44LfaOd
If you are accomplished or have other "needs", this SDR is very.... helpful.
This is how I usually acquire signals.

If you are seeing noise with your SDR these can help eliminate some types of noise

Am using an RSPdx with an active loop antenna in my back yard. Excellent performance. I was SWL as a teen in the 1960s. But SDR is a new level!

I am actually looking into loop antennas. In this "inspirational/ aspirational" video I was using a long wire for HF.
A loop is my next antenna. Do you have any recommendations?
      Thanks!

You kind of missed on different types of antenna needed to enjoy for the Full RF spectrum. Making your own balance line feed and Antenna, stands on another level.

Thanks for you response. You are correct, I didn't speak to antennas in this video. I do have a video talking about antennas for CB radio and I have learned a lot since posting that video.

Why as I'm watching and listening to this does the phrase "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should" echo in my mind?

    • @tunedsignal
      @tunedsignal  27 днів тому

I am naturally curious. I often want to know why or how something works.
In fact.. I started thinking about data transmission at low frequencies and the limitations due to the wavelength.
I'm still amazed that the wavelengths in HF can be 100 meters. That's simply fascinating. Then I think... "Oh one is passing by right now..."
So, I guess my perspective is.. If you now know something and find it interesting, why not learn more.

It could be. The RTL-SDR V4 is a good and inexpensive way to start. However you will want to look into an SDR Play or similar in the future. They have amazing performance.

It's interesting that you should bring that up. In fact approximately 75 percent through the edit, I realized that I was really highlighting and showcasing the software and hardware that was instrumental in shaping my interest in software Defined radio. It did feel like I was promoting those products, but truly, I am promoting the mission of Tuned Signal, which is to share, inspire and excite interest in SDR, RF. and radio. Most importantly I want to demonstrate some of the unknown signals that are around us every day.
If anything. This is an advertisement for Tuned signal and SDR interests.
Thanks for putting words to thoughts that I too had noticed. I hope this video inspires you to dust off your SDR and follow along with us.

@@tunedsignal the Hermes lite 2 is a $350 sdr that is a 5w hf ham radio. The learning curve of software setup is rather steep but it is one of the most powerful ham radios on the market being totally software run. Direct sampling, 384khz at a time bandwidth, 0.5-30mhz direct sampling. Most people run it with Thetis on windows, I’m running pihpsdr on Linux it’s a mini super affordable version of an Apache labs or flex sdr.

Fantastic video. Probably the best SDR / HAM related video I’ve ever seen on UA-cam.
These SDR manufacturers should pay you to do their marketing videos. Most of them seem stuck making 90’s corporate training videos. 🙄
It’s really a shame that this hobby is hobbled by old inflexible types that have not and refuse to keep up with the technology. Just imagine if they were making cellphones and your phone worked the way SDR / HAM radios do and came with the software and instructions.
