- Caterham Seven 170R POV Drive
Hello guys, welcome back to Car Obsession, and welcome to another POV drive. This time I have gracefully squeezed my way in to the new Caterham Seven 170R. You may think what's new about a car that has technology dating back to the 50s, but bear with me on this one.
For starters, it's the lightest car the British sportscar marque has ever produced, which is no mean feat considering your average Seven is about 500 kilos or so. The new 170 tips the scales at a featherweight 440kg, meaning you'll likely need a paperweight whenever you park the car up to make sure it doesn't blow away!
The Caterham Seven 170R is also the smallest Seven in the current range, which should come as no surprise given the fact it's the same weight as cat. This means it doesn't need a big, thirsty engine to propel it down your favourite B-Road. In fact, it's a diddy three cylinder engine lifted from a Suzuki Kei car.
More specifically, it's a 660cc turbocharged unit that produces 'only' 85hp along with 116Nm of torque. That may sound pitiful, but the 170R is still able to 60mph in 7.0 seconds, before topping out at 105mph. Here's the clinger, though, it's GREENER than a 1.5 litre Yaris hybrid, meaning you can have your fun in the knowledge you're not strangling polar bears with every smile-induced mile you cover.
A full review is coming soon, so be sure to look out for that.

I've been longing for someone to do a POV video on this new 170 so thanks v much indeed! ☺ Love that 3 cylinder noise
No probs, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching 👍🏽.
Ever since I first saw a Caterham I just can’t get over the personality of this car and watch every video I can find. I will import one to the states someday.
sames happens to me, i hope someday i can have enought money to buy at least the cheapest one and import it to Chile
I would absolutely love something like this super light and a small turbo engine you can really push without getting into too much trouble. I love the turbo noises but what would concern me is long term reliability of such a small engined turbo car especially if it's driven hard
I wouldn't be too concerned, as the Japanese build those engines for many years (see Suzuki Cappuchino, Honda S660).
Your back might brake before the engine in this mighty little racecar :D
50cc bikes must last 50 miles with that mindset
Sorry to see you go your the best no nonsense car guy on UA-cam
Thank you Michael, that's a very nice comment 👍🏽
Ah yes, glorious Goodwood, I used to speed along those same roads wearing those same gloves, except I was on my racing bicycle 🤣 keep up the vids young chap 👍🏼
Hi Richard, thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment! They're good roads, aren't they?
loving the Turbo noises :) one day I'll get to give a Caterham a good thrashing around some B roads!
Even if i had a 485, i would love to buy a 170. A small car you can take without questioning yourself
Hi Victor, thanks for watching and thanks for the comment 👍🏽.
Just magic 🤩💕!!
Glad you enjoyed the new Caterham 170R! My first Caterham was the 160 with Ford sigma 1.6, with a rover K series 5 spd gearbox .My present car was a 1.6 (Academy spec) which I have upgraded to 270R and use only on track and racing. It would be interesting if you could drive the 1,6 and see how they compare . The LSD and Turbo make for better performance,
Can't wait to try one , but sadly the budget wont stretch to buying one!!
Hi Lydia, thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. I wish I could have a Caterham in my garage!
Wow engine sound Is amazing. Looks really fun despite low power
Thanks for watching Mario!
looks pretty fast considering that tiny engine, i drove some 2.0 or 1.8 liters and have basiclly the same performance in straight line, but man in the corners at least in my point of view looks faster than a miata. good video very informative, grettings from Chile
I just wrote "Caterham pov" in the search bar and this show up... thank u I guess haahha
Ah, the beauty of tags, they worked! Thanks for watching 👍🏽.
That diff wine !!!!!
Just adds to the experience if you ask me! Thanks for watching.
Shame the 170 is not exported too or sold in the USA
Custom paint is now a £2K option! Caterham substantially increased the price of options earlier this year. Can’t imagine what that particular example would cost to spec In today’s prices.
How did you find the performance? I notice you kept strictly within the speed limits during filming. Do you feel it had enough power?
Hi Simon, thanks for watching. The performance is better than you'd think for a car that has 'just' 85hp. In regard to the speed limit, I have to stick to it as you can see the speedo at all times 😅.
Mpg like that and performance it would be the best Uber eats car ever lol
no power steering, bit of a workout parking in and out but man, what a dream job that would be :D
i think it is cheap then normal car if not dam becuse i love it soon as i seen it on top gear
I know that you have decided not to talk much but i would’ve actually appreciated more live input from you on how the car is driving, handling, etc. Otherwise, what’s the point really? 🤔
It's a difficult balancing act, some people complain I talk to much, whereas others say i don't enough - no matter what I do with POVs I'm never going to win to be honest. Thanks for watching.
Maybe a Super Charger .....hummm
