    Having previously had a more powerful Caterham 7, I'm still tempted by this. They are so much fun at any speed, the sensations are all amplified, they respond instantly to the smallest input. To those who complain about the cost, the equipment levels or the straight line performance, all I can say is... just arrange a drive in one. You'll either 'get it' or you won't. They are just so different to any hot hatch, you won't care if it's as fast as a GTi, ST, VXR etc forvthe same money. You cannot compare a Caterham 7 to any normal car.

    The misting up is solved by partly unzipping the rear screen and putting the heater on full-bore. A gale of hot air emerges from under the dash and demists it just fine.

    I drove one of these 160's on a road test drive yesterday and although I've never drove any other Caterham, l have to admit that it was the most exhilarating drive that I've ever had. It ticked all of my boxes regarding my expectations but I have to say that the power was just enough to keep me smiling and I could see that you may become a little bored after some time behind the wheel. I agree it's probably not a track car, but you'll never need to worry about bending it on one. In short, if you have a spare £20 k and you have the time to play and the missus don't give you grief then this is the tool for you. I'm 5'9" and weigh about 17 stone ( I know, I know) and it is more about wearing a Caterham rather than driving one ! All in all a great little car which, looked after, should return a good resale.

    Sadly its just too slow for anything other than sunday afternoon road use. It's a hopeless track car, as you'll be by far the slowest thing out there. I even drove a 1.4 K series equipped version and found it a bit slow. I'll be looking for something in the 150bhp region!

    • @1999danie
      @1999danie 8 років тому

      1.4 k series also shares every mounting point and wiring harness as the 1.8 k series ... Turbo which is no slouch as I have one in my rover 25 and it's great fun wiping the smiles of people's faces when they can't overtake an old mans car!

    • @1061shrink1061
      @1061shrink1061 8 років тому

      I ended up with a 1.6 K series with SS. so around 135bhp, it was as low as I was willing to go power wise, but is great fun and puts a grin on my face. It was considerably quicker around Blyton park than the Suzuki powered 160. Although brakes and suspension likely help that situation.

    • @1999danie
      @1999danie 8 років тому

      +1061shrink1061 SS? And you can get a 160 vvc in them and get a kmaps remap up to about 172 hp with overrun sounds mint

    • @1061shrink1061
      @1061shrink1061 8 років тому

      VVC means new engine though, that's the 1.8 that has VVC. The 1.6 can be taken up to around the 200bhp area if you really wanted, but as this is just a car for a bit of fun, i'm not spending that kinda money :) if I get bored of it, i'll sell up and buy a newer 150bhp sigma.

      @@HRM.H That is a large motor compared to what is usually installed in a 7 type car...Why the LS3.... other than lots of power. What car would you consider for the is motor?
      There are a few companies in the US who supply parts to make a LOCOST 7.
      I have owned and wroked on over 100 cars and was in the auto biz for 25 yeras.. to include a BMC dealership.. that was my first interest in the 7.. back around 1968.
      I might consider a 7 style car but also am a devotee to the MGA and the MGB...and the T series MGs.. more creature comforts. : ) and room for my wife and big dog. If there was a way to make the 7 style, or similar more driver every day usage I would consider a "kit" car. . I wish I lived in England and had better access to used/vintage cars and parts. 2 CVs with gobs of power and brakes would interest me as well. Burton ?

    A complete rip off from Caterham, a lucky company that refuses to evolve and innovate from this recipe, albeit a unique and good recipe. Any other British car company would suffer the consequences. It's a good job this car won't cost the company much to produce because I doubt they will sell many. It'd be mind bogglingly bizarre for someone to pick one of these over a second hand more powerful variant.

      The whole point of this video is that you still don't need a caterham with massive engine. A bigger engine is going to cost you a lot more in fuel, insurance and servicing. Where as this you could afford to drive more with less worries and there for just be enjoying it more.
      It annoys me how expensive they are as I really want one, but then again they hold their value well so after you sell it, you wont loose that much!
      Do what ever you can to drive one, I have driven a few at tracks and they are so amazing, they are so sorted (as in the handling is great), where as you can drive other kit cars and they can be terrible.

      I think the engine size and power is fine for their entry level car. The price, however, is not. They do not need to change the recipee in terms of design, because, as Teggy pointed out, don't fix what isn't broken. But they need to change the recipee in terms of economic efficiency badly.

      I make custom kitcars for any size. I'm 6'3 and about 200lbs. My boss is 6'5 and about 210/220lbs i would guess. We tried Caterham , westfield and Tiger kitcars but to no prevail. So we developed our own custom chassis's.
