Written by Dolly Pardon as a farewell to her business partner & mentor Porter Wagoner, expressing her decision to pursue a solo career. The song was covered by Linda Rodstadt with a lyric change. Elvis’ people not only wanted Elvis to sing it but buy the rights to it. Dolly refused. In 1992, Dolly agreed to let Whitney do the cover for the movie The Bodyguard. And .. it was Kevin Costner’s idea to have Whitney sing the intro in a cappella. Brilliant! Dolly commented later that she made over $10 million on Whitney’s version, then bought a mansion!! 😍💰

Although Elvis was not a song writer he was given co-writing credit and publishing rights on several of his songs because that’s the agreement that his manager would make with the original song writer. The song writers probably agreed with this arrangement because they figured Elvis would make it a hit which meant more money for them. Dolly would not go along with this which tiurned out to be a very smart move.

This song went number one on the country charts in 1976. When the film “The best little whorehouse in Texas” came out it hit number one again. In the 90’s Dolly teamed up with Vince Gill and the song hit the top 10. And then of course Whitney recorded the song in 90’s and took it everywhere. A good song never dies.

Dolly Parton has a charm to this. Bitter sweet 😃
She wrote this in the same session as she wrote Jolene.
Suggested videos 📹: 1 Jolene. 2 Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers sing Islands 🏝 in the Stream.

So gentle and sweet ,Dolly wrote this beautiful song when she left her former singing partner ,Porter Wagoner and went solo for her career . Great move Dolly ! I love that you are branching out listening to all kinds of music it is a very smart move to educate and appreciate what all music has to offer ! My I suggest Chris Stapleton singing “ Tennessee “Whiskey “ ,just amazing ! Good luck with your channel .

There is a video of her singing the song on Porter Waggoner’s show probably right before she left. I actually think that’s even a better performance.

Dolly's version was a love letter to her boss. She had been on the Porter Wagoner TV show for 5 years & when her contract expired she wanted to leave & go solo. Porter was not happy & tried to convince her to stay & wouldn't listen to her. So she went home & wrote this snog, came back & said sit down & listen to how I feel. Whitney's was a 'Diva' performance to fit the big star in the movie. Dolly is still performing this & it is even better. She has 'practiced' it by singing it for 50 years so it is still sweet, but more polished. This video is her very first performance of the song.

This is a fine example of a songwriter sharing a piece of their heart through their craft. Dolly is so masterful because it's so easy for her. Straight from her heart. Very few have this kind of talent to touch us so deeply.

This song was written from the hart when she was partying ways with her long time business partner and mentor. She wanted to go out on her own after a five year stint with a show she was doing!

Both versions were exceptional. Different genres, different approaches, same level of beauty. To me the difference is with Dolly's version if feels like she is singing directly to the person she wrote the song about, were with Whitney if felt like she was singing to everyone but maybe hoped/knew the person she was singing about would be listening.

I heard Dolly tell a story that she was driving when this song came on the radio. For a minute there she didn’t recognize the song. But when she did she had to pull over and listen to Whitney sing. She then went on to say that Whitney Houston took her little old song and made it BIG.

I knew that Dolly Parton was the writer and original singer but did not actually hear her version until several years ago. It has a whole different feel to it. Whitney of course did an amazing job but I also like Dolly’s softer, gentle more personal approach.
Not a surprise that this song is a cover as Whitney wasn’t really a song writer. There are videos called Songs You Didn’t Know Where Covers. Quite a few in the videos were songs that Whitney did.

This song was known only by people who listened to Country and Western music, which back in the 1970's wasn't a whole lot of people (at least the people I KNEW!) ABBA, Aretha Franklin, Olivia Newton-John, Chicago, Carly Simon, Eric Clapton The Doobie Bros.....all had hits that year. Disco hadn't even arrived yet. Dolly got overlooked for a long time. Frankly, Dolly wasn't really on our radar until the movie "Nine to Five" was released in 1980. That's what brought her main stream. We KNEW of her, but knew nothing of her talent until that movie. It changed everybody's mind about her.
Many, many of us only knew the Whitney Houston version for years because of the movie (The Bodyguard) and her version won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year (1994). All of us were shocked when we found out it was originally Dolly's. I found out when I heard a story on the radio that Whitney heard Dolly singing this and said, "Why is SHE singing MY song?!" I couldn't believe it.
(Turns out that was a false story - Whitney actually spoke with Rolling Stone Magazine in 1993 & told them she had spoken to Dolly & told her it was a beautiful song)
Dolly has said that with this song, she was able to put money in the bank, but that Whitney's version enabled her to BUY the bank!
In reality, with the $10 million she earned from the royalties, she bought a complex for her offices in a Nashville neighborhood with black families and called it, "The house that Whitney built". She is still earning royalties on it.

I'm not sure, but I think this song with Dolly, hit the charts twice...when it first came out in 1974, and then again in 1976 when it was used in the movie Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. I was 11, when the song debuted, and 13 when it hit the charts due to the movie.
I'm not saying at all that Whitney's version is bad --.but I always thought that Dolly's voice was that of a crystal bell, clear, pristine, soft, higher pitch, and Whitney's that of a cow bell...a deeper tone, louder, thicker tone to it. I knew and loved the song for years and years before Whitney's version came out.
I'll always love Dolly's version better, to me it just feels more heart felt, and for her it was a personal good-bye to the man, Porter Wagner, who put her on his show and helped boost her career. She decided to leave his show, for a number of reasons and this song, was her good bye to him. Dolly has said a number of times she loved what Whitney did with her song. Both version are lovely.

Great reaction! It's nice when people can get introduced to the 'original artists' of some of the songs they love, but are actually covers. You should check out "The Way It Is' by Bruce Hornsby. I'll bet you recognize something about that song as well. 🙂

Several artist wanted to do this song but she only released the rights to Whitney. She said in an interview that she had to pull her car over to the side of the road when she first heard Whitney sing her song because it was so amazing. That is generosity and respect.

We all knew it was Dolly's song. Whitney's was a cover and less heartfelt than Dolly's, in my opinion.
