      Correct, and this performance looks like an early 70's video when Whitney was way young. I love both but Dolly's version is a more intimate and personal sharing experience, especially when she whispers the lyrics. It tugs at my heart. Whitney's version is like an anthem of a woman in love.

    Dolly wrote this son in 1974 as a way to tell Porter Wagoner that she needs to leave the show when he would not let her out of her contract after 7 years. Elvis wanted to record it but his manager wanted half the publishing rights and Dolly said no. Smartest move she made. A number of other artists covered the song including Linda Ronstadt as did Whitney for the movie "The Bodyguard" Dolly is an iconic American treasure. Not only has she been producing number 1 country hits for 30+ years, but she has been producing number 1 hits for multiple artists for just as long.
    You should really look into her as she is just as good a person as she is a songwriter. She set up the Imagination Library which gives free books to children (over 100M free books so far) as well as hoped people in Tennessee after the hurricanes and wildfires ravaged the area. She has been awarded with the National Medal of the Arts (th highest honor the US Government gives for the arts), inducted into the Country Hall of Fame, 11 Grammy awards, written over 3000 songs, and most recently donated over $1M towards COVID vaccine research development. I look forward to watching you discover her talent.

    Dolly's version is much better. It really conveys the sadness and sentiment of the lyrics. Whitney's version was good, but overproduced. I think Whitney's would have been much greater if she sang the entire song the way she started it...in an accapella leading into a soft voice with the music way underneath. To me, that first verse of the Whitney version is the best part of the record.

    Dolly’s is sweet and intimate, a tender end to a relationship in which there is still love but their destinies do not lie together.
    Whitney’s sounds like she’s blasting it out across an airport terminal for everyone to hear, a last-ditch public declaration before her lover flies away.
    I much much prefer Dolly’s rendition, even though Whitney’s is also incredible.

    This is copied from the Wiki article for this song:
    When the 1974 recording of the song reached number one on the country charts, Elvis Presley indicated that he wanted to cover the song. Parton was interested until Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, told her that it was standard procedure for the songwriter to sign over half of the publishing rights to any song Elvis recorded. Parton refused. She recalls:
    I said, 'I'm really sorry,' and I cried all night. I mean, it was like the worst thing. You know, it's like, Oh, my God… Elvis Presley.' And other people were saying, 'You're nuts. It's Elvis Presley.' …I said, 'I can't do that. Something in my heart says, 'Don't do that. And I just didn't do it… He would have killed it. But anyway, so he didn't. Then when Whitney [Houston's version] came out, I made enough money to buy Graceland.

      Dolly Parton was associated with Porter Wagner for quite awhile. In addition to his musical career, he hosted a syndicated music/variety television program (remember those?) "The Porter Wagner Show" from 1960 - 1981 with 5 different female singers for most of it's run. Dolly Parton was his co-star during 1967 - 1974. As a tween/teen/twenty-something I was more into pop/rock at the time, but my Dad liked it and I vaguely remember the program. Although he was eventually eclipsed as Dolly rose to superstar status, he continued to record, tour, and produce the remainder of his life; releasing his final album in 2007, about 4-1/2 months before his death from lung cancer. It has been reported that Dolly was there with his family when he went on to 'The Great Gig in the Sky'. His funeral was held at The Grand Ole Opry House.

The song was a hit with Dolly, years later, Whitney made it a hit again, Dolly actually thanked Whitney for making her more money on her song, lol.

    Supposedly, Whitney didn't want to sing this song. It was Kevin Costner who suggested it for the movie. Dolly wrote this tune for Porter Wagoner, because she was leaving his show, not Houston. The original was released in 1974. Dolly has written over 3,000 songs.
    Elvis Presley wanted to record it too. But his greedy manager wouldn't let him unless he owned at least 60% of the royalties, and Dolly wasn't going for that. She was flattered though that Elvis was interested in one of her songs...

    • @Deborahtunes
      @Deborahtunes 2 роки тому

      @@wnsafford1854 ~ Thanks. Reason I said 60% is because that's usually what Parker demanded for songs Elvis recorded.
      I'm thinking maybe it was dropped to 50% for Dolly's track to try and "seal the deal". But of course we know it still didn't happen...

    • @wnsafford1854
      @wnsafford1854 2 роки тому

      @@Deborahtunes Yeah, Parker was "special." Dolly said, she was thrilled Elvis was going to do it & had invited a bunch of family in from out of town, to watch Elvis record it, which Parker knew. Dolly said Parker called her the night before recording (!), demanding 50% (probably figuring she'd be pressured into accepting) & that had it been a song that wasn't so personal to her & that hadn't already been a #1 (Country), she probably would have done it. She said she didn't blame Elvis & doesn't even know if he ever knew why the deal fell through. Also, that years later, Priscilla told Dolly how much Elvis loved the song, how disappointed he was not to be able to record it & that he'd even sung a few lines of it, in Priscilla's ear, as they were exiting the court house following their divorce.

    There is never a need to require that someone choose a version of any song they like best. We are all free to like as many versions of any given song that exists. Some songs are so great that any version is wonderful. I think this is just such a song. I've always loved Dolly's original. Whitney's is very good too. I see no reason to choose one over the other. I like them both very much. With music it doesn't have to be either/or, this one/ that one. With music it can be both/and. For me, that is usually the case.

    In 1966 or 67, Dolly became a regular performer on The Porter Wagner Show. They fought like cats and dogs (Dolly's words). When her contract was up, Dolly was ready to move on. Porter wanted her to stay, even going so far as to tell her she owed it to him. She wrote this song in one night hoping it would explain how she felt and how grateful she was to him. She sat him down and sang it for him. But he was just too angry. She left the show and went out on her own. Porter actually sued her for the rights to the songs she wrote while under contract with him. And he won the suit. Her songs were legally his. Years later, Porter was sick and broke and mostly forgotten, except in Nashville. He was selling all those songs that he had won. Dolly Parton bought all her songs back from him. Dolly has a beautiful heart full of compassion and forgiveness. She felt no sense of justice or revenge. After buying the songs from him, she gifted them back to him. Even though I loved this song first by Dolly Parton, I also really liked Whitney's version. Whitney Huston's mother, Cissy Huston was one of Elvis Presley's backup singers called "The Sweet Inspirations". Cissy Huston later had a stellar career as a gospel singer.

She said she couldn't remember if it was the same day, but she found this song and "Jolean" on the same tape, so she thinks they were written same time. Way too much talent in such a little country girl. LOL. In the same interview she talked about how disappointed she was Elvis didn't record I will always love you, but Col. Parker said Elvis didn't record what he didn't own, Dolly was well, to bad because she doesn't sell her songs. One of her first hits was "Dumb Blond" lmao, she isn't. That song alone has made her a millionaire xxxx When WH recorded it Dolly smiled all the way to the bank... I love Dolly so much for all those reasons, not only it she incredibly talented, Shes smart, funny, humble, loving and extremely giving, but I admire her most for knowing what she had and how to use it. She didn't let the "big boys" push her around, to look at her you wouldn't think it but she's one tough businesswoman it sparkly high heals! :)

    Like many have mentioned, Dolly wrote this song for herself WAY BEFORE Whitney was Whitney. What she did do decades later, is allow and champion Whitney to use it as a cover. I love both versions - but Dolly has my heart.

    I appreciate a good review, but this just makes me sad. I weep for the cultural, musical awareness. It’s not me. Here, let’s be clear. He’s respectful and understanding. Her interpretation makes me incredibly sad. Yes, Dolly is still performing. I can’t listen to ms. Girl’s reaction from a place of such ignorance. Some ignorance with a will to learn is one thing. She’s not it.

    Um, Whitney Houston was born August 9th, 1963. This song was written and performed in 1974., so , no, this song was not written for Whitney. A great song written by one of the greatest song writers ever!

    If you really want to cry listen to Tears In Heaven by Eric Clapton. It's so beautiful and it's a tribute to his deceased son Connor. And I cry every time I listen to When The Children Cry by White Lion.

    Your wife seemed extremely clueless, as to the time period of Dolly Parton in the video! But i am with you, Wilburn i hate comparisons to artist, especially when an original is covered by another artist, later down the road. This is also why i hate most drum solos from the past 30+ years! They practically all sound the same. I have some very unique and mostly unknown favorite drummers in my wheelhouse i listen too.

    Dolly sung the song from the heart because she sung it for one person in particular! She didn't want to sing it with a higher pitch because she wanted to make it heartfelt! Whitney sung it with power cords because it didn't have as much meaning for her! Dolly as humble and kind as she is told Whitney that Whitney sung it better than she did! Ps... Dolly wrote over 3000 songs throughout her career! Dolly didn't write this song for Whitney, she wrote it for Porter Wagner!

    Dolly did not write this for Whitney Houston, she wrote the song in in 1974 , when Whitney was only 11 years old, 18 years before the movie Bodyguard in 1992. The producers of the movie and Whitney ran with it when they did the movie. I think your intentions were honorable and good, but be careful, check your facts before making a statement out of rumored belief or hearsay. Two totally different singing styles and versions... standout song that fits many genres.

    She had call Elvis and tell him that he couldn't record it without her permission. She cried all night. His manager wanted Half he publishing rights. She couldn't bring herself to do it. She said it was a very personal song and she needed to protect it. She said she would have loved to hear Elvis make a record of it. She has made millions off of it. It is the song that put her on the map. She said when she had a hit with it she cried all the way to the BANK. She says when Whitney had a mega hit with it, she went and Bought the Bank! Funny Story!

    Dolly recorded this 1973, whitney was only 10 at the time. She did NOT write this hor Whitney. She wrote it to say how she felt about Porter Wagner. He had an entertainment show that she was a regular on. When she left she sang this song which is what you are watching. She is NOT related to Miley, she is her Godmother though.

    your girlfriend needs to realize , when she is barking up the wrong tree. i find it tasteless to bring a comparison to this song as this was whitneys biggest hit but she wouldn't have made it a hit at all if dolly wasn't nice enough to let her record dolly's song the begin with . so kudos to both ladies , i absolutely love them both. whitney made a huger hit for i main reason... pop music carries a much broader spectrum... alot bigger audience and dolly made a great deal on this song and gave alot if not all of it to charity to the Appalachian poor people.

    She did try to give it to Elvis, but his manager wanted all the rights to her composition- so Dolly smartly walked away. Whitney picked it up and made Dolly millions.
    Top composer and producer, David Foster completely rearranged it for Whitney with that dramatic key change mid-song. This was Twenty five years after Dolly wrote the song as a farewell to her employer, Porter Waggoner.
    You can’t compare for these reasons.
    Dolly is in her late 70’s and until Covid never stopped touring worldwide.
