When you are living on Lake Como, sometimes you don’t even realize how lucky you are. Always in your everyday routine… But when you stop for a moment, taking some time for yourself, you always fall in love with this place.

i've travelled a reasonable amount across europe, Lake Como is without doubt the best place I've visited and certainly the best out of all the lakes (i've visited them all) - It's picturesque, charming, calm but also vibrant and atmospheric, diverse, I could go to Como every year for the rest of my life and never get bored!

I go to lake Como a lot and the number 1 mistake that visitors make in my opinion is staying by the lake for their entire trip. The most beauty is found by walking up on the old mule trails up in the woods behind the towns. These walks are incredible. You hike through the forest that is much cooler than the lake in summer, running into small abandoned villages and sometimes wild boar in the distance (they run a mile as soon as they see you, don't worry). And you can end up at a restaurant in the mountains with an incredible view.
Another tip I would say is to visit Bellagio briefly and then go find somewhere quieter. Varenna is a quieter alternative, but still quite busy. The smaller villages can be amazing. Rezzonico is gorgeous. Hardly any shops and only two restaurants, but it's gorgeous.

We were just there in early October and it was perfect, the weather, not crowded, everything was just lovely. We found hotels and restaurants to not be super expensive so we were pleasantly surprised. We did not take a wooden boat tour but you can still see beautiful views from the ferry so unless you have a couple hundred you want to spend on the boat ride, you can easily skip that. Also the best things to do around places like Varenna is visit all the gardens of the villas, those are the most beautiful (and photographed) spots, if you just stay around the city you will feel disappointed.

There are definitely budget friendly alternatives, even hostels, B&Bs and such. Also I reckon you had a relatively short time, but Lake Como and the surroundings, up to the Alps (1-2 hours by car) are much more than those few places. And every other place around here is stunning and beautiful like Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio (which are surely among the most tourist's known locations).

In Varenna I reccomend the Castello di Vezio which is a wonderful castel from where you can admire the first part of the two branches of Lake Como. It's the place where you can see the most wonderful view on Lake Como!

I like driving to Lake Como and at lake Como because usually hotel parking has been free (not everywhere), other parking is cheap, and in the heat it's comfortable to drive from one place to another. Just waking and taking the boat can take a lot of time and can be exhausting when doing that all day every day. Driving can get you places more efficiently = you see more in the same time. It's also easy to drive higher up in the cooler air off the tourist areas and snag a hotel room for a lower price. And it's always possible to simply leave your car parked.
For sure a car is not necessary when doing certain kinds of sight seeing and if traveling from afar without your own car.
Varenna is my favourite place to stay too (when I'm not splurging for a Grand Hotel by the water...), I find it to be the best balance between calm and things to see. So pretty and ideally located off the worst hustle and bustle. You do have to take the boat or drive (usually best to take the boat even when going by car)from there to the other areas of the lake though: not much to do or see in the area surrounding Varenna itself.

Good vid thanks foor the info. 390 Euro is very expensive for that boat ride but great to see you enjoyed it ! Very good point you make about not comparing - having little expectations. Good point - you don't hear very much of that in these types of vids people make.

I love Lake Como, but last time I visited it they were doing construction 🚧 around it which made it look super ugly 😭😭😭😭 but the other times I visited it I fell in love with the beauty of Como

I just bought a house in the northern part of the like, and it’s way cheaper than the central part ! Lots of campings and budget b’n b’s. And only a handful of km’s away from the tourist attractions

      Hi,
I’d be traveling next month here and would be super happy if I could hear your recommendations on camping and staying on a budget. I’m hoping to find off the beaten path experiences (on a budget)!

@@sahiljain748 Hi @Sahil Jain as I told you you have to take an accomodation on the north western part of the Lake in the towns of Dongo, Gravedona and Gera Lario, where you can find campings and either travel by rental car, public buses or public boats. From there you are just a stone throw away from th tourist attractions but you spend half of the money for the accomodations.

which month did you go? I'm surprised the water was warm in that area! Another question I have: is it possible to swim in the water without going on a boat trip? Is it safe?

What do you love about tourism, is it the archeology, the culture and the museums, the food, the beaches and islands, the markets, the nightclubs and the hustle and bustle?
Can every traveler mention their best tourist experience and why
