Having been to both Riomaggiore and Vernazza recently I personally preferred the first over the second. Would like to return to visit the other villages some day.
Vernazza was easily our favorite of all the towns we saw in Italy. We went at shoulder season and our AirBnb host met us right as we got off the train. She told us about Sarah who we could arrange a boat ride with when our original plans fell thru. The boat had a meat and cheese board and wine, absolutely perfect. Our host also booked us a reservation at a great restaurant on the Mediterranean that did not disappoint… our charming waiter came out in a variety of hats and sang to our tables. Very memorable.
I can say without doubt that cinque terre is definitely one of my favourite places in this entire world. It’s absolutely stunning and the people i met there were super nice. I’d recommend anyone who visits Italy , to definitely check these towns out !! :)
Lexie how can you mix up the currency value of the euro having traveled so much around europe? By the way, 40 euros is an amount I would not spend for a 20-30 Min. boat ride, but that's just me!
Great one! I did enjoy your speech here the most so far, feels like this location has an exceptional place in your heart. :-) thank you for sharing all of the exciting stuff Lexie. xo
lexie your content has genuinely inspired me so much! in a few days i’m going to portugal and thanks to you i have a whole new perspective of what travel means so thank you
Shoulder season confined: stayed in Monterosso last week in May 2018, left just as hundreds of tourists arrived with their wheeled suitcases. Shoulder season it has a very ‘sleepy fishing village’ vibe with mainly locals and just a few ‘in the know’ tourists. Great for hiking, walking, swimming (little cold in May but endurable) and soaking in the clear blue waters ❤️😍❤️
If you choose the right timing it’s super good! I went in the lower season and got to swim in cold as water ahahah but still was super warm and enjoyable. 40! Is pretty pricey! Definitely good to do the hikes but dress appropriately, it’s not easy! I suggest to stay in La Spezia and just get the train ober way cheaper
I think if more people were to remember that anytime any of us travel somewhere, we are all tourists, no matter what label anyone chooses to give themselves or how any of us choose to spend the time ….& that everyone has as much right to be there as the next person. If we all made the most of enjoying the experience with the people around us, it would be a lot less stressful. Nobody can go to somewhere popular and expect to have it to themselves. We should all be more prepared to embrace the company & maybe even make some friends. ( as an introvert, this is something I am working on )
I actually hiked from Vernazza to Monterosso Al Mare and then hung out on the beach, but next time I go back I think I'll do the boat ride to get a different perspective of the coast, but the hike was amazing and you get some amazing views as well. And I agree, I went during the summer and it was blazing hot and packed, but still worth it IMO too. Thanks for another great video!
The transportation boats are a lot cheaper and the ticket can be used all day if you get a day pass, but yes, you will have more crowds. 20 dollars from one town to the next is a little steep
Although the boat ride is nice, you can also take the Cinque Terre Express that goes from Monterosso up until Riomaggiore. You can take it paying through Omio or at the train station (5eur one way). For The boats there's also a whole day boat for 32eur (reduced for kids). It can get super busy in monterosso but there's also some free beaches. During the morning is great, and for cocktails at the beach you can get a whole bucket for 15eur. Of course the prices are inflated because of tourists. If you want to be more aventurous trekking is great. From Levanto you can hike to Monterosso (12k hike)
I went in October and it was perfect weather, not too hot or too cold, and there weren't many crowds. I could even swim in the sea so I would definitely recommend travelling in this month.
I really want to visit Cinque Terre, in 2018 as a spur of the moment replacement day trip visiting Rome, my travel buddy and I visited Sorrento - we both said when we got married (to others) in Sorrento was a must-have on our honeymoons - we've since grown apart as friends, but Sorrento will always be a must-go whenever I return to Italy, and maybe it's time to try out Cinque Terre too!
I’m from Liguria and there are many beautiful fishing coloured villages along the cost like Camogli, Sestri Levante, the capital Genoa, Noli, Varazze. There’s not just Cinque Terre even if all goes there.
I went in the begging of November and it was perfect weather for hiking and basically there were almost no tourists. If you want to hike there is the permit for hiking that also contains unlimited train rides between the villages plus free wifi in the train stations plus free access to the bathrooms.
Thanks Lexie. If all goes well, I will be there with my partner in mid-September. Already booked a guesthouse in Monterosso so hopefully won't be sleeping on the street.
Only €40 !!! train is a bargain :-) And the shoulder season is better not only because less crowds, but because it really get's too hot in the summer. I would stay at the towns at either end of 5T and get a train in and out each day. I had to do that as we were on a road trip of Italy and it was the only option to have secure car parking.
The Cinque Terre is one of the places in Italy I really want to travel to. I have heard so many great things about it, and I'm glad that it is worth all the hype! Thanks for all the tips! I agree that shoulder season would be best - nice weather and not as much crowds. Hopefully too many people don't catch on though, lol!
She is a tourist, so coming here is not an issue at any time. The key is finding a true local guide who can take you around & teach you about Cinque Terre. The history of this place will amaze you. Do Not Take a day trip here. You are being ripped off by coming from Firenze for the day. The train ride is 3 hours up & 3 hours back. plus you are one of these big tours she is talking about. Staying in one of the villages makes your stay much more desirable & the tours leave at 7 pm. There is a Cinque Terre park pass for E 18.20 that will give you Train, village bus, trail, wi-fi, & bathrooms from 4:30 am till Midnight. (1, 2, & 3 day passes available) Try looking for Trekguyd in Riomaggiore can point you in the right direction.
After a month in Italy, Cinque Terre was my favourite. I wouldn't take a 40€ ferry ahaha the train is like 5€. I think the best places are when you go on top of the mountains when hiking. Hiking is the real gem to me. Didn't care at all abt the cities. It's also lonely at the top, no tourists! Or maybe that was because it was mid-May.
I really like Italy and I have the dream to travel to Rome, Milan, Mattera, etc. But places like this (Cinque Terre) also exist in my home country (Portugal), althought nobody comes bc it isn't too famous, what makes me sad
I’m not sure about cinque Terre, but in a similar tourist town called Portofino, many of the windows are fake and just painted onto flat walls. It’s really hard to tell on camera but it’s extremely obvious irl
just 3 seconds ago you made a video saying that your surprise trip there with thomas was the best trip of your life or something, and now it's nowhere to be mentioned in this video. i'm confused.

Monterroso October 2021 was niceeeee, so few people!
I love Cinque Terre. I used to spend my childhood nearby, close to La Spezia, so the whole Riviera Ligure holds a special spot in my heart.
La Bottega del Frito was our favorite spot to eat. Luca the owner was so Friendly and the seafood was to die for.

She later said that the boat ride cost $20USD - could have just been an honest mistake
We walked from Monterosso to Vernazza, in may 2014 .beautiful view of Vernazza as you approach it!!!
Agreed. The train is only 5 euro.
why you’re that mad bro?
She meant 20 per person talking in plural previously, they went to two.

I did Monterosso and Vernazza as well. Train is cheaper as another option.
Lexie, you’re amazing! I learn so much from your content. Need to visit Italy 🇮🇹
You can also buy a cinque terre card for the trains. It can save some money if you’re planning to hop around a lot :)
