What is The Amp? First and foremost, it’s a 50W Guitar amplifier. The preamp is based around a single 12AX7 running at high voltage in a discrete Class A circuit. The tube preamp reacts with a guitar the same way any tube amplifier does: it generates harmonics and the sweet sounding high fidelity tone that tubes are known for. Along with tube EQ. there is on-board reverb and tremolo effects so that The Amp can be used as a grab and go amplifier. Foot switches for bypassing the effects are built in. A Class D power section delivers 50 watts into 8ohms, or 100 watts into 4ohms. The Speakon combination jack for speaker output takes either a standard 1/4” connection or a locking Speakon connector for extra security.
The Amp has an integrated headphone amplifier which sounds identical to the output from a speaker. This is perfect for practice, auditioning pedals, or for those times when noise is not appropriate. The Amp can operate with no speaker attached so it can live on a pedalboard and go wherever the pedals go. Speaking of travel, The Amp has a universal IEC power input. It can run from 100 to 260 VAC. No matter where it is on Earth, it can be plugged into a wall socket and used with no need for additional power accessories.
How about a compact studio quality tube preamp? The internal XLR output delivers a balanced line level output. There is no modeling or simulation involved, no menus or presets to give option anxiety. It is very straightforward and simple to get great tone from the tube preamp of The Amp and use it as the front end for a modeling system, recording setup, or for playing direct on stage.
The Amp also has “pedal level” output where it can be used as the front end of a pedal board or as an amp like effect on the back end of a pedal board. There is no substitute for the marriage between a magnetic guitar pickup and the first stage of a tube amplifier, and this is something that is missing with modern pedal board setups. Using The Amp in front of a pedal chain will add harmonics and tube musicality to the entire signal chain starting right where it matters most: between a guitar pickup and the grid of a tube.
Using The Amp further down the signal chain creates unique tonal possibilities. It plays well with pedals, and it can add extra EQ or reverb to an existing amplifier. The Amp can drive the input of an amplifier as an extra tube gain stage. It can be a backup for a vintage amp needing service, or used in place of anemic backline gear on your travel gig. At 2.5lbs, and with so many different uses, The Amp may be your new best friend.

dude thanks so much for beginning the demo with like whatever a G and C, it's getting rare !
that was exactly what I wanted to hear ahaha
This is the best demo of The
Amp on UA-cam!
thanks so much for the kind words.
Thanks for the great demo. I’ve got one ordered, and can’t wait to get it. I play acoustic 100% of the time at church, and using the session di straight into the system sounds huge. The idea of being able to go direct like that with my electric was one of many reasons I think I’ll love The Amp. Also, I’m hoping the “electric” guys will get jealous, and love it enough to snag one so I won’t permanently lose my hearing from the current stage volume. Thanks again for the demo. Great stuff!
Thanks for the kid words. I hope it does work for you well in that context, I know it works well for me in that same context.
Great overview!
thanks!
Super cool! Been waiting an a more in depth demo. I play a tele and a lap steel in a cover band. Perfect for all out gigs. Volume has been an issue of late.
thanks
How would you compare the quality and sound of this to a traditional tube amp such as a Fender Princeton, or a Dr Z Cure?
Hi Curtis,
This really is the best demo I have watched for The Amp. Thanks for such a great explanation.
I was wondering what are you thoughts on the headphone out? Does it sound good ('amp like") with the built-in cab sim?
I'm planning to buy The Amp 100.
it can sound fantastic with the headphone amp, you will probably have to lower the volume so you don't blow your ears though! ha
Can you still crank it and get it loud with no distortion?
Thanks, Curtis, great video. While the cab sounded great with the Amp, can you confirm that the sim cab was indeed enabled during you recording? Frankly, the simulated speaker tone sounded - to my experience - similar to a direct out without any cab attached.
Thank you & all the best!
100% confirmed cab sim was on.
@@KentToneworks Thank you!
Nice , can you do a demo with the speaker simulation?
Was the cab (speaker) simulation turned on?
Direct sounds meh, the cabinet sounded way better. How does it sound with old through the cab?
Yeah, I'm not big on the direct sound either. It reminds me of playing direct into a PA system or an electric guitar through an acoustic simulator pedal.
Question, can you go from the XLR output on this to say the mic input on a Scarlett audio interface?
I am not as familiar with the Scarlett but it was made to work well with soundboards and interfaces.
It’s a line level out, so going into the mic input on your interface would most likely clip and distort. You would have to turn the interface gain way down, which will add more noise in the signal. You’d want a XLR to 1/4” cable, which you would run into the 1/4” input jack on your Scarlett with the input switch set to Line, and you’re off to the races.
That’s if you want the cab sim. If you want to skip the cab sim, you can just run a regular 1/4” guitar cable from the Pedal Out into the 1/4” input on your Scarlett with the input switch set to Instrument. Now you have just the sound of the preamp.
David Peck Thanks so much for the reply and straight forward answers. One more question, can I still use XLR from The Amp to the Scarlett but turn off the cab sim switch? Could I still monitor from the headphone jack? Thanks
Oh cool that switch must be new. Wasn’t on it when I first was researching this amp. It’s easy to find pics of the back without it as well. So yes, you can switch that switch to turn off the cab sim, however it’s still a line level out. You would not want to run into the XLR jack on the Scarlett. Read up on the difference between Line Level and Mic Level. You would still want to use a XLR to 1/4” cable so you can go Line In to the Scarlett. What model of Scarlett do you have?
can you take the milkman 50 high gain?
Sounds great! When you say switchblade, do you mean Swiss Army Knife?
HA! YES!!! my bad.... thank you!
Curtis Kent Ha! All good. I was just curious.
Anyone reccomend a pair of headphones to use ?
it clips a lot
Horrible
What is and why?
@@sidownes Ahh what arrogant i were. Thanks for the demo. I think what i didint like was the direct sound. Not sure, may make sense to share the direct sound of it but its not good. Maybe trying it with more cabinets / guitars dont know. But its subjetive anywais, tastes are tastes.
@@sidownes I thik what actually triggered my comment was a feel of that (horrible) clipping i see on various demos. Maybe people like it but i hate that clipping mostly on clean sounds.
