The Opto sounds warm. The Vari-Mu sounds big (you can really hear the added harmonics when the drums hit), the FET sounds aggressive (sounds like the transients are getting a good squash because of the rather fast attack time) and the VCA sounds very balanced/transparent imo.

I've been needing this video for ten years! Finally I understand the difference between my plugin compressors. That's why VCA sounds so boring on guitars a lot of the time!

Great video as usual! Interesting how different the kick and snare sounds between the compressors. The snare sound of the 1176 is very recognizable from a lot of records, to my ears the kick lost a bit of the low end with the 1176 - is that a 'feature' of this compressor? I liked the kick in the Fairchild, it was round and big and at the same time held it together - hard to describe. I think the LA-2A was better than expected, it held the kick and snare together in a nice round way, perhaps suitable in a jazz setting, but not in 'in your face' rock?! Interesting to hear the SSL bus - the snare sound was similar to the FET, but not so aggressive perhaps. The kick had more low end than the 1176. My conclusion: By only using these 4 compressors and using them in different combinations, you can really get very different drum sounds! Thanks for sharing!

I agree, I was also surprised by how good the LA2A sounded, but it tends to work better with slower drums. As you mentioned, it is not something I would use on faster rock drums.
Vari Mu sounds great on that drums
Possible to have a VU of the input source alongside the given evaluation? Or pan the source left and compressor right? That would be cool

Don't worry...they are very fine and subtle differences and takes time to train ones ear to hear it. Also, it is sometimes more obvious when you listen to these kind of things on good speakers or headphones. Anyway, thanks for watching!
@@thomas_juthone thing I have to wonder, and this goes with a lot of audio plugins, if the differences are so subtle are the differences really meaningful enough to matter?

I mean it's definitely something a lot of people ask themselves. Having said that, I think it's the subtle things in audio that make all the difference in every part of music and sound. 🎚️
If you think about it, you know, whether the guitarist plays with these strings or those strings, or which kind of tubes you have in the amp, or what microphones are used-the subtle nuances between different preamps and all these subtle differences all the way from beginning to end in the audio chain all add up and eventually become a sound.
And I've always been a big believer in subtle colorations, but maybe not when you solo in on one of them. You might think it doesn't make any difference, but when you add them all up, it's usually what creates a sound. 🎛️
So even though I see your point, I still believe in nuances of colors and the smaller things in life that add up to become something significant in the big picture.
