It looks stunning. I have the BB58 but I'm really tempted to get the 54 as well. There are definitely enough differences between the two. I also tend to agree with those that believe the 54 looks more refined than the 58.
*UPDATE: After remeasuring the SECRET MEASUREMENT I believe it is 29mm even. Not 29.5mm* I use crystal press dies and sometimes they are not machined to the number showing on the die. off by a bit.
This is my opinion for this very cool subject: I have a family heirloom Rolex 6538 but will never wear it in the wild. As a matter of fact it is in a safe in a vault. I bought 5-digit sub back in 05-06 and still love it to this day and will always be in my rotation, but I also wanted to wear something vintage but there was nothing out there until the first Blackbay back in I guess 2010s some time. In hopes it would feel like the 6538, I found it was not and did not wear like it. 2018 comes around and the BB58 arrives. The BB58 wears almost exactly the same as a Rolex 6538. The BB58 is 39mm x 11.9mm in height x 47mm lug to lug and a lug width of 20mm. The crown is 6-6.5mm. The Rolex 6538 is 38mm x 15.2mm in height due to the doomed x 47mm lug to lug and a lug width of 20mm. The crown is I believe 8mm last I checked. I tried the BB54 and it was an awesome watch! Love the fit and feel but also did not fit like a 6538 at all which makes sense because it is a nod to an older vintage but even then it is it’s own thing as the vintage it is based off from 1954 it is based off is larger lug to lug and thickness. So the BB54 does not wear like a vintage but it wears very different in a good way. For me I wanted something like the 6538 and the BB58 is my preferred. Specifically, the Gilt dial. Lastly the lume on the BB54 is not as good as the BB58. I think depending on which vintage you like most would determine which you prefer. Another option is simply owning both the BB58 and 54. For me I am waiting for 2028. I have a feeling they will make some refinements with the original BB58. They will make changes with the gnarling on the bezel and crown and may shrink it down to 38mm. Now that is a watch worth waiting for in my opinion. But no one would be wrong to own that nice BB54.
Absolutely agree! I like the smaller sizes in anything. My only Rolex is a 1980s Date model the 34mm reference. The Black Bay 54 fits perfectly into a collection of 37mm and down models!
I have the BB54 and...wow. Rock solid movement (+0.5 sec/day), build quality, finishing and functionality. Suitable for more occasions than it isn't. GADA credentials with 20mm lug width and it'll likely hold good value. What more do you realistically need? Bravo Tudor
I have the BB58 and love it. I’m sure the 37mm watch on rubber is super comfortable, but the BB58 in 39mm is just a great size to display that beautiful dial, and very comfortable too. I switch from my Sub when I want a more casual wear(and no, they don’t really compare apples to apples). Nonetheless, a great watch on its own merit.
Can I switch out the swap for 58? I want the black strap for 58. You think it would feel unathentic because 58 doesn't have black strap and only made for stainless steel?
For once, this might be the only Swiss dive watch that I would love to have, besides all the Seiko's I have owned. I really like Tudor as a brand too, they do listen, unlike the other brand w/ the crown..... Great review btw!
Before watches and wonders I was going to the Tudor boutique on a weekly basis and complaining about how I just wanted a 6204 that I could wear at all times. I had them set a bb58 black aside for me and was about to pull the trigger when I thought that maybe I should wait for watches and wonders just in case, and low and behold
This is a great watch in every sense. But it’s crazy how the lume pip in the bezel is slightly misaligned in lots of the bb54s I see out there (mine included). Quality control not on point for a watch at this price point.
Thanks for the excellent review. Do you see the polished mirror case as being inevitably scratched? Does one have to resign oneself to such scratches to enjoy the Tudor Black Bay models for the long-term?
I think this is more of a dressy diver. I already have one scratch on mine. But only visible at some angles. During the 10 year service interval Rolex service center can restore it to looking new again. So just wear and enjoy.
I bought a new BB58 in blue last year and was very disappointed with the mass on my wrist. It is extremely thick and wore like a Rolex Deep Sea. I sold it after 3-4 times of wear for a considerable loss and bought a new no date Submariner as a replacement. The sub is a perfect watch. I also have a 2006 Daytona, 2023 rose gold date just on oyster and an identical datejust on jubilee. Of these the sub is the watch I pull from the case most often because it is the most satisfying to wear.
Your review was great, as usual. I love the secret measurement part. This is a great release, but I tried on the rubber strap version (super comfy) and it ended up looking like a toy in the distance shots (full length mirror). It does wear bigger than one might think for 37mm, but it was still ultimately too small. I do think it was a bit small on your wrist in the distance shot, but not massively as on mine. My favorite of the more compact Tudors is the Pelagos 39, which I feel gives that vintage (39mm vintage, not early '50s vintage) Sub feel. Having tried on a vintage Sub, it felt eerily similar, with a much better build quality, naturally. I'm not afraid of smaller watches. I did just pick up a used SPB159 Alpinist on Seiko bracelet (like the bracelet on the SPB155), and at 38mm that is great on my wrist, even in the distance shots. That's about as small as I tend to want to go though. I was able to try on a lot of 36mm watches at the recent Chicago Windup Watch Fair. While the CW C63 36mm wore bigger than expected due to the bracelet and the Nodus Unity 36.5mm looked bigger than expected, it wasn't quite there for me. Both were very nice watches by the way. For average or smaller people, those may work great on wrist.
the secret measurement was wrong in the video it is actually 29mm even. Anyways, that is all just personal preference, but I think it looks perfect on my wrist from far. BTW my wrist size is now 6.65inch. It grew as I just check recently. Been working out alot! Soon I will be able to wear my dream the Seiko turtle!
@@EscapementWatch Ah, that makes sense on the secret measurement. I checked my new Alpinist and it was barely bigger than the one in this video. That was surprising due to the smaller size and the dive bezel. 29 makes more sense. That's cool that your wrist size went up. I lost just a little bit of weight and mine went from 7.25 to 7 inches! I was shocked as my wrist looks skinny anyway.
Authorized dealer in my opinion is the way to go, I’m glad I waited. I was considering the Rolex explorer until I notice the black bay 54, it’s my perfect everyday watch. Love the vintage vibe, fits my collection perfectly which include a Cartier dress watch, Longines sold gold piece, omega deville on a jubilee bracelet, vintage timex, Casio and lastly a gshock. No need for me to purchase another watch…I also on an Oris on a leather strap.
Thanks for the brief introduction of this beautiful watch, well done. Perfect for my wrist which is exactly as yours. I also prefer the rubber band, looks great. One thing about the luminescence - in the comparison to the Seiko it seemed to fade very quick, but in this video you talked quite positive about it. Any experience in the meantime how long it lasts at with good visibility?
Yes on these lume shots I only view it for 20-30s initial burst. I thought it was good until I tried the Seiko. The seiko vs tudor video was shot over 45min you can see the seiko minute timing the whole lume battle. First 2-5min of the tudor will be bright like in this video.
buy strap then bracelet after from AD. I've heard when you buy the strap after you have to reuse the endlinks on the bracelet. The clasps are not the same.
Seem to be readily available on the rubber. Great watch as it wears bigger than its dimensions. Tudors movements are well regulated my bb58 runs +1second per day.
Very nice. I'm coming around to Tutor. I prefer rubber to bracelets, but I do not like the fitted Tutor metal end links like on the one and the Pelagos. I'm sure it would look great on other popular rubber/FKM straps such as a tropic or rally.
I've seen it on a strap and the gap from the case to the lug holes looks off to me. Too much open space. A nato would negate this tho. This one is proper Rubber not silicone fyi. Feels better then my fkm tropics. I dunno what rolex/tudor use.
$3600 is steep for a not really inouse movement. At that price COSC is a must for a simple 3 hand movement. Meanwhile the Longines Zulu Time is a more complicated, a true GMT that ALSO meets COSC for only $3k. Longines as a brand has an extra 150 years on Tudor, and that's heritage as one of the few brands that were building their own Chronographs including the famous flyback. Seems the more of this around rhe clock attention Tudor gets the more I realize how Rolex got so big with such a scant history of innovation. They knew how to maximize marketing and media to the limit. What bugs me about this homage to a vintage watch in particular is that because Rolex calls the shots all Black Bay models can ONLY have snow flake hands and they cant use Mercedes hands nor the Submariner name despite both of these things being a long standing part of Tudor history. That seems like a forced hierarchy to upsell to Rolex Submariners at a wildly inflated premium now. You used to be able to buy Rolex Submariners (even adjusting for inflation) for what you can only get a Tudor for now. Yet is Rolex delivering a five times better 3 hand diver over the 54? Not remotely the case. Btw, in my opinion the best value proposition between Rolex and Tudor is the Black Bay chronograph. Its a bit more money than the 3 hand BBs but at least your getting a more complicated movement on a panda dial which is timeless. Rolex prices are just beyond absurd for a brand that doesn't make a grand complication and has no heritage as an inhouse movement maker. But you cant argue with the masses. I just hope they dont start looking at Grand Seiko HiBeat GMT, Longines Heritage tuxedo Chrono and Zenith Pilot Auto and drive their prices up.
Yes the sides don't seem to be finished at all or well. But I will say this, the way I film makes every flaw magnified. Monta finishes their hands much better and of course Rolex as well. If Tudor started to do that the difference between the two brand would be much less. My blackbay 58 hands were worse btw.
How is the lume? I've heard reports of dark spots on the hour hand, as well as it not lasting as long as other Tudor models like the BB36 or the Pelagos.
Love mine so much but on the bracelet (to get more presence on my 7' wrist). Almost perfect watch. However, I tend to disagree with you on one point: the lume is a little bit feeble ( and it is for me the only drawback).
nice! Yeah I thought the lume was weak when I first got it. Then did testing and realized this is pretty good. I tested it against a sub(5 digit) and some micro brands known for super lume 15-20 layers and the 54 did amazing. The small lume plots did trick me at first tho. We will see how it stacks up against the new 62mas for final verdict.
and Monta's hands are better then Ginault even. Haha. yes tudor seems to not finish the sides of the hands at all. And the way I shoot it really highlights the edges and makes them stand out more.
@@EscapementWatch how are the Monta’s better? I’ve looked at both closely and can’t tell a difference. Of course at double the price they should be, I just can’t see it. Can you point out the difference?
@@EscapementWatch I watched it but I don’t see under macro it looking nicer. Notwithstanding a French term, in practice, what makes it nicer? It doesn’t appear any better polished or smooth under macro. In fact when I zoom in the Ginault’s hands actually look better done. How do they both compare to the Omega Seamaster?
Montas hands are nicer because the edges and sides are smoothed out and rounded. Not sharp where you can see the tooling marks of where the hands were cut. I noticed this easily while filming both for hours. If you don't see it then that is a good thing! and I have never had a seamaster under macro so I have no clue.
While I love this watch, I just now realized what bugs me about it. In your macro shots you can see the pressed/stamped nature of all the hands with unfinished, fuzzy edges all around. Probably can’t see them during real world use, but knowing it’s there bugs me. A shame that at this price they don’t bother to finish them a bit nicer. Still, an amazing watch and great review.
Yes the hands do bug me but you can't see it in person. My seiko marinemaster 200 new gen has perfectly done hands on the sides and top! but the seiko dial has badly finished markers. seems like there is no perfect watch! I'm trying to trade my bb54 now for a 62mas SJE093 right now.
@@EscapementWatch oooo that’s a great alternative. Good luck. I would also recommend the Grand Seiko SBGA467. A favorite in my collection and perfect finishing. Not a dive, but 🤷
Do you / anyone have any info about the 600 vickers hardening of the alloy bezel? I never heard of this before and am wondering if it s true or a bit of dealer sales waffle? Very good review too :-)
Well aluminum anodizing hardness depends on the quality of the process. It an vary widely. Here you can read from CL Hann industries stating anodized aluminum can be as hard as DIAMOND! clhann.com/what-is-anodizing/ the 600 Vickers is just an average of anodized aluminum for watch industry.
Got ya. I bought mine from a grey dealer and am receiving it today. Didn't know if I could do something like that at home? I have a 7inch wrist. @@EscapementWatch
yes you can do it at home just with a sharp scissor. In the video you will see the 3 cut off points labelled when I talk about straps. Cut straight down that line and it cuts the snowflake in half.
@@EscapementWatch thank you. I don't have many tools do hardest part might be detaching the clasp. Idk. That might not be hard. And dude thanks for much for replying. Crazy talking with you after watching so many of your videos.
I have the old bb36 actually. So I most likely will when I get some free time. It is an old watch and not sure how many people are still interested in it.
my wrist is being pushed up against my other arm making it wider on the thumbnail shot probably. And I just remeasured as of now it is 6.7inch. It does swell in the summer heat? or it could just be bigger due to workouts. But I measure every couple months.
It is perfect - design, size, tech, materials..but..it is just toо pretty to be dipped in either Sea or pool. A great diver/beater but for millionaires. I'd be happy enough with a Baltic Aquascaphe.
This will never happen. Rolex will never allow Tudor to use the Submariner logo on their watches because it will immediately damage the Rolex Submariner sales. Common sence
its not that bad....but yea its weak compared to the Seiko I just reviewed. Kinda sucks when spending so much. When I compared it to a microbrand with 15 layers of bgw9 the tudor did decent....But against the SJE093 its like 50% as powerful. bummer.
Tried it on the wrist at AD, didnt like it (was too small for me)…great for smaller wrist. Also I dont care for gilt dials. Hanging on to my blue 58 for now.
Looks stupid with the silver on the bezel insert and guilt everything on the dial. Why didn’t they do the bezel insert guilt like the BB58? Horrible looking mismatch.

It looks stunning. I have the BB58 but I'm really tempted to get the 54 as well. There are definitely enough differences between the two. I also tend to agree with those that believe the 54 looks more refined than the 58.

The BB54 is the goat. I have a 7 ¼” wrist and I love the classic 37mm size.

Under macro, the Ginault really looks better finished, specifically the hands.
and Monta's hands are better then Ginault even. Haha. yes tudor seems to not finish the sides of the hands at all. And the way I shoot it really highlights the edges and makes them stand out more.
@@EscapementWatch how are the Monta’s better? I’ve looked at both closely and can’t tell a difference. Of course at double the price they should be, I just can’t see it. Can you point out the difference?
Monta uses feutrage finishing on the edges of the handset. I show it in my monta noble review. the rolex of microbrands.
Man, this does it, I gotta have the bb54! Thanks!!
Any time!
This watch is dead sexy.
Nice watch!
Thanks!
What do the rough finish hands under macro look like at distance in full length mirror?
Smooth as silk
Here you can read from CL Hann industries stating anodized aluminum can be as hard as DIAMOND! clhann.com/what-is-anodizing/ the 600 Vickers is just an average of anodized aluminum for watch industry.
the hands look like they've got rough edges?
yes the edges are not finished, but my filming exaggerates this.
did you have to cut the rubber, or was it out of the box a great fit for you?
AD cut off level 1 for me. Might try cutting off level 2 because on the smallest position, sometimes its a tad lose.
These are sweet. Hopefully I will get to try one on one day
Nice watch…. Enjoy.
Thanks 👍
It looks perfect on you.
Great video and congrats man 👏 #tudorbros
Appreciate it!!
Mine just got in at AD.
the all new two door Tudor lol
I like to say Two door at least once per tudor video
i hope you can review the old version of the bb36
I have the old bb36 actually. So I most likely will when I get some free time. It is an old watch and not sure how many people are still interested in it.
Should I add this to my Pelagos 39?
Rubber band or not?
Rubber and leather straps bro. This thing is vintage inspired. It need leather!
Your wrist looks bigger than 6.5 inches. Is that accurate?
my wrist is being pushed up against my other arm making it wider on the thumbnail shot probably. And I just remeasured as of now it is 6.7inch. It does swell in the summer heat? or it could just be bigger due to workouts. But I measure every couple months.
A two door 54
While owning the black Bay Blue
The blue is different color so I'd say our good to get both.
Awesome video! Do let us know why did you really go with the rubber instead of waiting for the bracelet? Many thanks.
It suits my personal style. I dress very casual/sporty and don't want something too blingly.
🖤 Love 🖤
Happy NWD👏
Thanks bro! It is a gem!
It is perfect - design, size, tech, materials..but..it is just toо pretty to be dipped in either Sea or pool. A great diver/beater but for millionaires. I'd be happy enough with a Baltic Aquascaphe.
i like
Until Tudor writes 'Submariner' in red text on the dial and drilled out lugs...I won't be buying one.
This will never happen. Rolex will never allow Tudor to use the Submariner logo on their watches because it will immediately damage the Rolex Submariner sales. Common sence
The lume on my bb54 is weak
its not that bad....but yea its weak compared to the Seiko I just reviewed. Kinda sucks when spending so much. When I compared it to a microbrand with 15 layers of bgw9 the tudor did decent....But against the SJE093 its like 50% as powerful. bummer.
Still find the 58 a more attractive watch.
Great looking tool watch.
It really is!
Love my 58 … I would have to see the 54 in hand the dimensions just seem to tiny
Ceramic bezel and I'm in. Come on Tudor!!!!
Cute little watch.
That bezel is off very slightly but definitely not lined up
No it is it's just the glass distortion.
Tried it on the wrist at AD, didnt like it (was too small for me)…great for smaller wrist. Also I dont care for gilt dials.
Hanging on to my blue 58 for now.
The submariner is the watch of my dreams and I have it
Its meeeh
All your bases are subjecting to us!
Ceramic bezel ❓
Looks stupid with the silver on the bezel insert and guilt everything on the dial. Why didn’t they do the bezel insert guilt like the BB58? Horrible looking mismatch.
SS preferably 👍👍👍
When will they change the ugly hour hand, it seems like the same design on repeat with Tudor
Something changed. They released the 54.
1:25 The hands look very poor quality. To be honest.
I would have much more preferred a glossy black dial.
The rest is perfect but that is not a detail to my eyes.
Without the red triangle, the 54 looks flat compared to 58.
I wish i could trade my 40mm sub no date for a 37mm sub no date
