    Thanks for this preview as always. You mentioned the Fujifilm XT4. I was considering picking one of those up for sports hybrid shooting. Now I am thinking the R7. I already have a few canon EF mount lenses that can be adapted to either camera. I sense either would be a great upgrade to my 5D4. Agree?

      As lovely as the X-T4 would be, I’d think the easier/smooth adapting scenario is to grab one of the Canons.
      But if somebody gave me a freebie X-T4, I wouldn’t say no haha

    Thanks for the review Ted. Lovely design and its nice to see some competition in the APS-C space. The Xt3/xt4 is great, but its my hope that these new canons will put some pressure on Fuji to up their AutoFocus game.

    While the R7 has good autofocus, SD cards fill up quickly and take longer for the buffer to clear. This can be an issue, especially for photographers looking for an APS-C camera for wildlife and BIF. The other issue is the 2.1M EVF, which makes me wonder if Canon has another mirrorless APS-C camera in the works that has a higher resolution EVF and the ability to use CF Express Type B cards or if Canon has decided that if photographers want a faster buffer and higher resolution EVF than the R7, the only Canon cameras with these improvements will be mirrorless FF.

      Excellent comment Mark! Get Pro Grsde, or Delkin UHS-II and that helps, of course the actual buffer of the Camera will be what determines the outcome.
      I gotta say, canon is either stupid, or cheap, or both. This camera should have had a better EVF. It would not hav affected sales of any of their other cameras. Of course it is APS-C, so they couldn’t use one of the FF cams, and developing a better one for the R7 would have cost them money. No, Canon is not stupid, just cheap, like the stupid plastic trays they put in the camera boxes now!
      This IS coming from what once was a supreme Canon FanBoi, i.e. moi. Not so much anymore. Anyhoo, YMMV, as they say. Peace!

      I have the R7 and in real world conditions I have had no issues with the EVF. I also have an R6 and can't really tell much difference between viewfinders. I have been shooting C-Raw at high speed (15 fps) electronic shutter on skiddish flying and perched birds. I have found 15 fps plenty fast to get amazing action shots. I have not hit the buffer once, nor had any issues with buffer clearing. As for rolling shutter, the only time I have noticed any issue at all is in a few shots taken while panning. Most shots have been fine. The autofocus has been fast and accurate. I think people sometimes freak out over specifications when real world results is all that matters. The camera you want would likely have been at or more than $2,500.00. Not really sure that there is a market in 2023 for a $2,500.00-$3,000.00 APS-C camera. To me, it has the right features at the right price. This camera makes a nice upgrade from either the 7d ii or 90d.

    There is no free lunch. You get more depth of field with the same intensity but as the sensor is smaller the total amount of light is less. In practice this shows so that you cannot raise the ISO as much.

    Great overview as always. I definitely think that having a shared mount is important.... I use a full frame Sony system and my wife much prefers the size of APS-C. It's nice to be able to share lenses between the systems.... especially the primes and long zooms. For the most part it comes down to "how big a camera do I want to carry around with me". I will say that I am surprised with the performance of that R7.... looks like a very compelling option (but obviously a bit bigger than the Sony APS-C). Shame the lenses start at 18mm though.... 29mm equivalent FF really is quite a compromise. I am honestly surprised that they effectively released a compelling vlogging camera without a wide angle option that would work with it. They should have released a ~15mm F2 prime.... that would be SWEET.

    • @JohnDrummondPhoto
      @JohnDrummondPhoto 2 роки тому +1

      There is the EF-S 10-18 F/4.5-5.6. Since I have the EF/RF adapter already, I pre-ordered the R7 and will buy that lens. It's stabilized so it should work well for vlogging.

    • @MeAMuse
      @MeAMuse 2 роки тому +1

      @@JohnDrummondPhoto I am sure that will work... but having been in the Sony system since 2014.... adapters are a bit naff. The big frustration is always how big / unbalanced they make a lens... and then the lenses are typically designed for older autofocus. Sure its going to work for a bit... but you will want a native lens at some point. I just feel they missed an opportunity.

    • @JohnDrummondPhoto
      @JohnDrummondPhoto 2 роки тому

      @@MeAMuse I can say from experience that the EF/RF adapter works great on EF mount lenses, Canon for sure but even the Tamrons and Sigmas I used to own. Those, I sold because the RF versions are much sharper and focus faster. My EF 16-35 F/4L still works great adapted.
      I don't shoot Sony so I can't speak on their adapted lenses. But it sounds like you adapted lenses that were made for a non-Sony mount like Canon EF or Nikon F, with a non-Sony adapter like a Metabones or MC-11. That introduces a whole 'nother set of engineering challenges that the Canon EF/RF adapter doesn't face.

    • @MeAMuse
      @MeAMuse 2 роки тому

      @@JohnDrummondPhoto Sounds like your experience is the same... less sharp, not as good AF and not worth the extra bulk (but definitely workable). I am hearing the same from a friend that just switched to the R5 (bulk, and just not the same level of performance as RF). Obviously when its mixing brands it is worse :) Well hopefully they release something wide soon :)

    • @JohnDrummondPhoto
      @JohnDrummondPhoto 2 роки тому

      @@MeAMuse the RF lens designs are pretty brilliant across the board. The RF L lenses outperform their EF predecessors. Even the cheapo 16mm and 35mm lenses that I own are pretty good.
      That said, there are gaps in the lineup, especially at the wide end and in the affordable price range. Few can afford all L glass. The EF-S 10-18 that I mentioned before is very small, as is the EF/RF adapter. So bulk won't be an issue for that R7 combo. I would like to see for FF a 20mm and 24mm RF prime. Neither needs to be L class.

If the lens has a physical switch and the body has a physical switch, it seems like the user interface is ripe for confusion and frustration. For example, the lens switch is thrown into AF, but the camera remains in MF because the body switch is still set to MF.

    The R10 shoots 10 bit 422 in HDR PQ. Yes, it's not LOG, but still quite serviceable if you want 10 bit. Personally, I prefer to set up a prolost flat profile and just shoot 8 bit h.264, which is totally fine for a large number of videos. Canon Log is nice, but not totally necessary.

    Good video. For the full review, I would appreciate seeing more on the noise/ISO issue and the effect of high pixel density on final image quality. It seems that a crop body with pixel density 4 times as great as a FF body may show pixel peepers issues with noise and sharpness when we look at every pixel but when the final print is made (lets say 20x30") the greater number of pixels would offset some of the issues compared to the camera with fewer but larger pixels. How this actually works out is a question. I have been satisfied with ISO 12,800 on my RP but want the crop for distant birds so the R7 is a specific camera for a specific job rather than a do-all end-all. I will keep the RP for landscapes and studio where IBIS and autofocus are not of use. I would appreciate your investigating how all this works out in the real world. The interesting statistic might just be how many of the first wave of R7's delivered on July 1 are available for resale on August 1 or January 1. I regret not having the new toy until summer is half gone but past experiences suggest committing to a pre-order before cameras exist may not be wise. I'll buy one if and when sellers can ship when my payment clears (milliseconds?) rather than at some unspecified date. Subscribed.

      It's just not as good as the 8 year old 7D mk2. Weather sealing is poor, you hit the buffer in 1 second and takes 12-15 seconds to clear. Coupled with the old sensor from the 90D. It's really not that great unless you are looking for a very average video camera.

      @@doghouseriley4732 This has been proven incorrect. While it's not sold as completely weather proof, it does have weather sealing, and plenty of people have taken it out in the rain without issue already. The buffer is dependent on how fast your card is. If you're around 250+/MB second write, you will get around 3+ seconds of buffer at 30fps, and if you go mechanical at 15fps, it's almost endless. If you feather the button, you will have no issue with either mode. The buffer clears incredibly quick and you don't have to wait to keep shooting, it will give you chunks of 5 or so images at a time to use. For me, it takes about 5 seconds to clear the buffer entirely. The autofocus has been proven as nothing short of "insane". It's really, really, REALLY good. I am finding it almost impossible to have a blurry image. Even the rolling shutter concerns are being put to bed with professional wildlife photographers not having an issue, with maybe one or two images, out of dozens, showing any warping. I went from the 7D mk2 to the R7 and it's a revelation. I believe in a year or so, after initial thoughts like the one above have been proven incorrect, it will be regarded as the true successor to the 7D mk2. It does everything, and way, way more. An absolutely amazing camera, IMO.

    Unfortunately camera sales are way down, I blame overpricing and slow advancements from model to model. Remember when they said APSC was dead , full frame was the new format but low and behold thats not the case. If only the camera developers had advanced as quick as the cell phone guys did . My phone is always there super quick response time and video to die for. I was a camera guy but lost interest. The average consumer has caught on and its left to the professionals like yourself and others to continue to pick up the pieces.

    I am very excited about the R7, maybe this will light a fire under other manufacturers. being a Sony shooter it is frustrating for the last five years we have been askingFor a high-end APSC camera and we're still getting the A6xxx little toys with a recycled sensor . I love my A1, but I would love to be able to have a good APSC body I could trust with a good battery life and good ergonomics.

  • @henryIRL

    So you were able to put RF glass on these bodies without an adapter? But they also have dedicated APS-C ‘RF-S’ lenses?

    • @mattland3924
      @mattland3924 2 роки тому +4

      Yes I believe the RF-S is the same actual mount it just means the lens only covers an APS-C image circle. So you can use RF or RF-S lenses on the Canon R7 and R10 flawlessly.
      I think you could also do the opposite and use an RF-S lens on an RF mount if you use a crop mode on the camera.

    Although Canon said those were new sensors, I can't help it, I think that's BS.
    There is probably minor differences sure, but I really looks like the R10 has the same sensor as the M50/250D and the R10 has the same sensor as the M6II/90D. Minor changes being there to account for the change in the processor department.
    I guess we'll have to wait until we can review the RAW files, but the resolution is the same, the ISO range is the same. I hope I'm wrong but it seems like marketing BS again
    About the comparison with other camera systems : I would say that your whole system is as good as your lens lineup. You can have the best camera ever, if you can only mount trash lenses on it it's going to be a bad camera system. This is the exact reason why I think Fuji is still ahead of the game in the APS-C space, as they have very good lenses for pretty much every budget (budget zooms, mid range zooms, high end zooms, same thing for primes pretty much). Right now, the best option I would see for those new Canons (especially the R10) is to get old EF-S glass to go with it. RF glass is still way too expensive for people that buy that kind of camera (makes a bit more sense for the R7, but that's still a stretch to me). The system is overall just as bad as the Nikon APC-C line of cameras : two kit lenses that are "meh" and then expensive full frame glass, with the best option being older APS-C adapted glass from the DSLR era

    Good day, tell canon that they are spoiling the capacity of their dslr in terms of video specs and we dont like that. All their dslr/mirrorless top of the lines (1DX, 5D, 6D, 7D & 80D) were having .MOV high capacity for editing video footages, but now only the Canon R (because it introduced the new system), R5 and R3 that have great .MOV ALL-I high quality video footages from the box. The R6 IPB, 90D IPB, all M-Series IPB and mostly all of them MP4 format while MP4 is a finishing format not an editing format as most of us like to do some tweaking etc... AND NOW EVEN THE APSC TOP OF THE LINE R7 STILL IPB FORMAT, MAN WHAT NO SNESE IS THIS???

  • @billyoung9538
    @billyoung9538 2 роки тому

    I would also add from a video standpoint that APSC is closer to traditional cinema cameras from a sensor size standpoint, and that means lens aberrations and and depth of field will more accurately match that of more traditional theatrical movies. While one can decrease their aperture size with a full frame sensor to mimic much of the look some of the lens characteristics mentioned, most notably aberrations, will also change slightly. Also traditional cinema lenses will not cover a full frame sensor, so one would have to crop the sensor just to use them in the first place. Just things one should consider when figure out what they are using a camera for.

      Price, performance for size and FF is not all it's cracked up to be. YMMV and if you like FF, then stick with it. But, remember, most professional video cameras don't use FF sensors. They're either MFT or APS-C sized chips. And, if they're specialised cameras like iMax, they use MF sensors. Or, film.

    I strongly believe that the R7 is not a flagship apsc r camera.
    It's not a fully weather sealed body.
    It dosen't have the 3 pin remote connector
    It dosen't have gps
    It dosen't have 3 dial wheels.
    It dosen't have a full size or a mini hdmi
    It dosen't have wifi 6 support or an inbuilt wifi transmitter.
    Dosen't have a top info display screen like the R5
    It dosen't have an Ethernet port / it dosen't support the WFT battery grip even though it's the same battery.
    And it dosen't have a CF express card.
    No flash sinc port
    And it dosen't have high res view finder and a high res back screen even though Canon already dose it for the R5.
    This is a 90d successor and not a 7d mark 2 successor.
    I think canon will put it all these features in an other camera and call it a R9 and that it will come with a 2000$ price tag .

    As a life long Canon shooter I have absolutely NO INTEREST in the R7/R10. My Samsung phone shoots 8k video and 108 Mp . The FF RP is a better bargain. I have an Elan 7n film camera and a 40D APS-C DSLR for the infrequent times I need an ILCamera.

    • @truthseeker6804
      @truthseeker6804 2 роки тому

      your samsung 8k is crap compared to a 4k camera. many people have done such comparison. RP is the worse, unusable 4k without autofocus, lower fps, smaller battery, 30 minute record limit, 8bit video, no log, lower fps for photo, no 4k 60. these r7 and r10 destroy the rp easily. maybe except for portrait in lower light. 40d is a webcam.
