Simon, there are literally more than 100 things I could say about your work here that impressed me. From the shocks, to the camera work, the diagnosing...you even repaired the tape stuck in the radio ffs. 99% of people would chunk that tape, ya know. I mean you Macgyvered the shit out of the caliper sensor! Thank you for all your hard work you put into your cars and your filming. It's truly one the most immersive restoration channels I can think of.
I always think about whether I'm watching a short film or a tutorial. The short film is about a love-hate relationship with the 528, the tutorial is a first-class repair guide. Great mix of both, with a few new camera angles. Turned out very well, thank you very much!
Nearly as impressive as your ingenuity in repairing things that would have totally flumoxed me, is your camera work. Your videography style, with those incredible close-ups, lighting and interesting angles, are just incredible. This stuff is not easy. And a huge amount of work. My respect to you, and thank you!
I saw a guy do that once, the spring shot out across the shop and destroyed the side of a late model Cadillac, luckily no one was hurt. But I've heard people died doing it like the first way you tried, luck was on your side big time. I almost had a heart attack watching when you undid the strut nut while weight of car was still on the spring. We always dumped the oil out of the strut body, it was only there because the original strut was not a cartridge, the strut body was the outer reservoir for the strut. Plus our strut compressor was wall mounted, so the whole thing had to be removed from the car no matter what. You could compress the spring put in place drop the strut cartridge in from the top, I've done them that way before. On the overhead control, I've soldered small guitar pedal wire from point to point to fix a screwed trace many times. Mouser electronics has the correct lamps for these too. Get some electronics rosin or flux core solder too, the solder you are using is acid core, bad for electronics. The euro bumpers really make these look better in my opinion. Glad to see you taking an intrest in one of the better cars out there.
Simon, your videos are so relaxing. I am really stressed out lately. I look forward to your videos. I watch them before bed. They help me get relaxed and get to bed sooner. Please don’t stop. You’re one of my favorite UA-camrs now.
easily one of the best built 5 series ever put out. certianly have their quirks and do wear out, regular failures as do any car but to drive a well kept/nicely fresh one is really special. thanks
There is nothing better then a car driving smoothly, if you keep it well maintained. I personally always have my car at the top, ready for a ride in first class😁
Ugh, at 4:40 I can see the thing that's been the bane of my existence in my 80s Mercedes: factory undercoating / seam sealer failure. It gets a lill crack, and holds moisture against the metal until it turns into a giant rust hole. Attack those areas while you still can. Grind off the undercoat and seam sealer while there's still metal, treat, paint, and re-cover. If it's non structural, fiberglass mat makes a good water tight seal. Paint the area, stick the fiberglass into the wet paint, then spray more paint into the fiberglass. Add layers. This will keep water out of the interior and the floors from rotting out....
The last of the great 5 series...so worth keeping if you can..Your GF must love it....Young man, you are never beaten, and to imagine doing this in any automotive shop would be astronomical in labor never mind the parts mark ups. All of this without a word, no gimmicky BS...just doing it, old school....Truly a pleasure to watch.
Be aware: if traces on a board are burning out, it indicates that there is excessive current in the circuit. Make sure the values for the fuses are correct; anything higher than stated, bring them back to stock. If it continues blowing fuses, or if burnouts continue on the circuit, further investigation is needed. It could indicate a short, such as a wire rubbing through.
Your technical abilities and care for your projects is so so insanely impressive!!! Thank you for sharing your gifts with us and the hard work does not go unnoticed.
I like the transmission range selector indicator repair the most. I bought a rather pricey conductive silver paint pen that comes in handy for (very, very carefully) touching up circuit board traces without using solder and heat.
Thank you very much Simon. I think it is better to service similar parts at once rather than in batches. For example, the suspension, alignment and brakes together.
When I was in high school my father brought this car back as a loaner while his 320i got fixed. It’s difficult to articulate how shockingly nice these 5 cars were. I drove it around thinking I was hot shit. (There weren’t a lot of bmws in Wyoming in the 80s… it was “exotic”). Unfortunate this is a prndl car.
Well, I would have to agree that Blondie would be the appropriate test cassette for this vintage of audio system. Although I might have gone with Also Sprach Zarathustra for the test of the new antenna.
My dad have this same exact car but it’s an ‘88 with a 5-speed. He has it in Dominican Republic 🇩🇴. I love watching videos like these as it ignites my passion for cars even more. Keep up the good work, cheers 👌🙏🏿
Great videos! If I may, be sure when you have all that dust from rust and/or brakes you have the right eye protection and breathing protection. 3M has good info on the right types of masks/ventilators depending on what you’re dealing with (types of fumes/dust etc…)
first time a saw a car like this was in the beginning of the '90' and i remember thinking " wow, what luxury " they were the high end of cars in Europe back then. They were buying them from Germany and bringing them to Eastern Europe, who had one was very rich back then!
Well done, curious are you using pluming solder? If you are, you want to switch to regular electrical solder , cheaper and easier to work with. Maybe consider buying a modern soldering iron like a TS100, easier to use, better temp control, and a variety of tips. Also, affordable
Am I the only one worried about pouring the oil into the strut housing, and then having trouble screwing down the retaining nut, leaving a lot of exposed thread? Looks to me like it's hydrolocked / needs the oil pouring out. Love the videos... will be sad when I hit the end of your video library!
i found your channel this month and im loving it, just fixing cars and no boring speaking. i wanted to know about your watch, i think its very beautiful. what watch is it?
Been meaning to ask, is that like a fluid film for rust preventative that you spray before reassembly? I know you're in a salt state, so I figured it was something like that. Thanks. These are really great.
I had a salmon silver ‘88 528e five speed from new to 147,000 in 4 years. I used it for work a lot then. Replaced with black ‘92 525i which got stolen. Great the you can master this obsolete(repairable) technology.
why not replace the outside casing around the Shock Absorbers!? It feels like a crime to go though all the pain and put brand new shocks into rusted casing!! But amazingly patient work on the rest. Hope she appreciated the work u put into this car.
These things are usually a factor of cost/parts availability. And as bad as the housing looked, they weren't about to rust through or anything. Still plenty thick, or else I definitely would've replaced.
Yes of course as of Benz type cars such of B M W also a well faascination and liked by the most of car drivers and the owners even I like the Renault type cars please.
After all, BMWs - avoid. I've had a 318i, which was a joke when it would go, and a 323i convertible, which was a faster joke, with seriously dubious build-quality issues. Both had the oil leaks and electrical gremlins. I honestly don't see the attraction.
Whats the ride height now with the Bilstein B4 shocks? Ive used them previously on other BMW models and there ride heights was always much higher. My e28 is due for damper replacement and worried Id have the same issue
I wouldn’t think replacing the shocks alone and not the springs would affect the ride height that much. I didn’t really notice much of a change, but maybe if your old shocks are totally blown out it’s inevitable that it’ll change the height a little bit.

Correct a true modern Mac Gyver! Really enjoyed how you tried to fix everything while keeping the maximum of original parts Simon !
Thank you. Macgyver was my favorite show growing up, so that helped.
i did not realise "Macgyver" is a verb now. lol
That head unit rescue was a win. It's hard watching other repair/restoration channels after watching this one.
Dude i am so glad i found your channel. Not only can you rehab cars, but you have a very cinematic eye as well. Great work.
Thank you!

Once again Simon your mechanical and artistic prowess are on full display! Thanks for sharing this with us.
2k subs and counting. That's a good bump. The algorithm is agreeable. Cheers!
SimonBmwman ... dropped socket tray pickup a nice touch ... I love your work!
Any mechanic that claims to have never scattered carefully-organised tools all over the place is a liar =)
easily one of the best built 5 series ever put out. certianly have their quirks and do wear out, regular failures as do any car but to drive a well kept/nicely fresh one is really special. thanks
Takto žádný servis neudělá poctivě práci jako zde Šimon on vše vždy i důkladně vyčistit pro maže olej vazelína atd .Je výborný mechanik❤❤❤
Es entspannt mich dermaßen das ich dir bei der Arbeit zuschauen darf. Ich liebe es. Mach weiter so.

Let’s go new Simon video just dropped 🔥
Half of my teenage years, I spent splicing cassette tape and reeling it back onto the spindles…
A No. 2 pencil is the preferred tool.
Your technical abilities and care for your projects is so so insanely impressive!!! Thank you for sharing your gifts with us and the hard work does not go unnoticed.
That car needed a lot of love and you mastered everything keep it up
Отличное состояние кузова автомобиля!!! И отличная работа!!!
I like the transmission range selector indicator repair the most. I bought a rather pricey conductive silver paint pen that comes in handy for (very, very carefully) touching up circuit board traces without using solder and heat.

Механик по призванию! Смотреть одно удовольствие!
👍🇷🇺Привет из Костромы!!! Ты отличный механик!!! B
Автомобилях прошлого есть душа!!! Не то что современные!!!
Man even fixes cassette tapes. Love your videos. Keep it up. Your editing is brilliant.

Excelente trabajo, te felicito y agradezco mucho, también tengo un bmw e23 y aprendo mucho mirando tu video. Saludos desde Uruguay.
hands down my favorite asmr mechanical channel. fantastic artistic eye for composition. well done!
I’ve watched all of your videos . Just going through and liking them all. Since I watch them in different places
Hey, Simon. Your jobs are always the best. Hard job, big result. You are a crack, man 🎉🎉🎉🎉
So then, Minnesooota eh? Oh ya, you betcha! Thanks for the video. 👍👌
I get the whole minimalist thing. That's probably the enjoyment. Just imagine what you could do with a roomy shop and more improved tools.
My dad have this same exact car but it’s an ‘88 with a 5-speed. He has it in Dominican Republic 🇩🇴. I love watching videos like these as it ignites my passion for cars even more. Keep up the good work, cheers 👌🙏🏿
How is it same exact when 2 years newer?😂
@@nunyabuziness8421 this e28 chassis was made between 1982-1988, my dad has the last model year of this generation.
Started watching your videos cause we share the same name. I don’t regret it at all 😂 keep up the good work
how heartwarming, hahaha. thank you.
This guy can fix anything, amazing 👏
The apocalypse comes I'm heading to Minnesota for Simon lookout he's a freaking genius 👍👍
Great videos! If I may, be sure when you have all that dust from rust and/or brakes you have the right eye protection and breathing protection. 3M has good info on the right types of masks/ventilators depending on what you’re dealing with (types of fumes/dust etc…)
56:00 - this shot is money
headlights on, twilight sky, high-rise in the distance.
sick.
Excellent work man, devil is always in the details. Props for working on those circuit boards. Love the cassette tape fix as well.
Everytime I see the adjustable wrench come out, I think "somebody send this guy a set of proper wrenches"!
first time a saw a car like this was in the beginning of the '90' and i remember thinking " wow, what luxury " they were the high end of cars in Europe back then. They were buying them from Germany and bringing them to Eastern Europe, who had one was very rich back then!
Haha, that's really fun to imagine. Thanks for sharing.
Great video! I love the search for a solution to a problem. Great work!
Your channel makes me want to go out to work on my no existent corolla! Miss my old car. Now I have no garage space to work on anything.
Having the space is tough, I barely have room.
Greetings from Italy!
Excellent job!
Simon hello, i am trucking man one of your fan l am lover of what you do thanks Amigo for interssing Chanel.
A minnesota plate was the last thing I expected on this car, I daily a ‘94 Civic hatch here. See you on the road
Heck yea
Another excellent repair. Thank you man.
You are a great movie Maker bro, awesome work with the camera, light and your mechanics knowledge
I grew up with this identical car... I can't tell you how many times we broke that god damn auto antenna in a car wash.
Yea, thats exactly how it broke.
You fixed that cassette like a GenXer. Not bad, young man. lol
Great upload, i love how you repair all the electronics, it s really cool!
Your soldering iron is really tough!
You can almost use it to solder gutters.😂
Амортизаторы не прокачал перед установкой. Стойки стабилизатора с рваными пыльниками не заменил, хотя они дешевые.
This is therapy.
Very good job bro.we from Malaysian.
Well done, curious are you using pluming solder? If you are, you want to switch to regular electrical solder , cheaper and easier to work with. Maybe consider buying a modern soldering iron like a TS100, easier to use, better temp control, and a variety of tips. Also, affordable
Keep up the good work, you’ll have a million subs in no time. Love your vids
Am I the only one worried about pouring the oil into the strut housing, and then having trouble screwing down the retaining nut, leaving a lot of exposed thread? Looks to me like it's hydrolocked / needs the oil pouring out.
Love the videos... will be sad when I hit the end of your video library!
That's the recommended procedure
I always loved that body! Good video
Really like that beamer. A sedan I would actually drive . Nice.
Thanks. It makes a great daily when it's working.
Analogue, cave man stuff - love it. This will grow as a trend of things to appreciate.
Good all round job mate 👍
love the camera work, keep it up
i know i'm late to the party, but Simon, put some rubbing alcohol on those q-tips to clean the cassette player heads
Excelente reparacion y buen gusto musical. Parallel Lines es lo mejor de Blondie
greetings from Russia, you have golden hands, keep doing repairs, you're doing well, good luck.
Hakkapelitta nokia good wintter tyres , you are rilly handyman ; )
Classic tape repair 😁👍
If you don't mind me asking what do you do for work are you a mechanic or do you do this in your spare time
Very well done clever man not a fan of the adjustable wrench or the head rounders anyway cheers
Yea, I should get out of the habit, but for most of this rusted stuff I work on, I'm not too concerned by it. On nicer vehicles I'm more careful.
Up 1k in subs in 11 days. Awesome growth. Cheers!
i found your channel this month and im loving it, just fixing cars and no boring speaking.
i wanted to know about your watch, i think its very beautiful. what watch is it?
Thanks for watching. I believe it's a seiko, although that's about all I know about it, was a gift.
12:03 lol. Favourite part
Nice work love the videos keep em coming 👍🏽
Been meaning to ask, is that like a fluid film for rust preventative that you spray before reassembly? I know you're in a salt state, so I figured it was something like that. Thanks. These are really great.
Excited for another upload! How much time do you think the camera work adds?
At most it probably doubles the time to do repairs, not in all instances though.
I had a salmon silver ‘88 528e five speed from new to 147,000 in 4 years. I used it for work a lot then. Replaced with black ‘92 525i which got stolen. Great the you can master this obsolete(repairable) technology.
Вітаю! Дуже вражений твоею працею над ремонтами авто, та як відео монтажера, це захоплює. Мої вітання котикам!
How are you so good at everything, where’d learn so much
why not replace the outside casing around the Shock Absorbers!? It feels like a crime to go though all the pain and put brand new shocks into rusted casing!! But amazingly patient work on the rest. Hope she appreciated the work u put into this car.
These things are usually a factor of cost/parts availability. And as bad as the housing looked, they weren't about to rust through or anything. Still plenty thick, or else I definitely would've replaced.
I really enjoy this channel. but did you intentionally hide the overall image of the car? it would be nice to look at the finished product as a whole
В порванный пыльник стойки стабилизатора набить смазку и ставить обратно-а что так можно было?
Я их менял всегда. Пыльник однозначно под замену.
13:22 something are lost on this ATE breaks. its important blocked dust and dirt on guides
Just wondering how you edited out your screams of terror and pleas for mercy when your socket set fell over 😂😂
Yes of course as of Benz type cars such of B M W also a well faascination and liked by the most of car drivers and the owners even I like the Renault type cars please.
very good job thanks you
One way or another...
Bmw - super !
After all, BMWs - avoid.
I've had a 318i, which was a joke when it would go, and a 323i convertible, which was a faster joke, with seriously dubious build-quality issues.
Both had the oil leaks and electrical gremlins.
I honestly don't see the attraction.
What watch do you have?
I know this is old but theres a good size nail or something in the one tire at 21 34 u can see it
Whats the ride height now with the Bilstein B4 shocks? Ive used them previously on other BMW models and there ride heights was always much higher. My e28 is due for damper replacement and worried Id have the same issue

I had a 525i once, and it had this wierd hydraulik brakeservo.
Rost style!
👍👍
It always saddens me to see good cars rusting out to nothing.
Simon…I would love to introduce you to my daughter..Major General Bryan Maxwell. USMC ( Retired )…🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
