Same here! It was on really late for some reason but we (me, my Mum) were always up watching it?! I remember having some sort of love - hate relationship with The Freak, she was horrible but somehow endearing.
Prisoner cell block H was like my guilty pleasure when I was younger, it was always on TV really late in the UK but I always stayed up to watch it, loved it.
Yes indeed it was Melbourne that made prisoner even more special..I genuinely also think if prisoner had been set in another Australian city it wouldn't of been as special..something about Melbourne at that particular time period that intertwined the city and Wentworth
This used to be shown really late at night in Sweden in the 90's, three episodes a week. Despite the time slot it gained quite a following. It was always a treat when it was time for a new episode. Good times, different times.
Mine and my Mum's go to show every week in the UK back in the 80's. But even more amazing was that each week, the lads at school would talk about it. Cell Block H was truly a universal get together, age, sex... it didn't matter... such an amazing show then and now. Who can forget Bea Smith, Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson and Vinegar Tits! Ah man... Lizzie! Thanks for making the difference. Pure Aussie Gold!
My Aunt passed a while ago and this song just gives me goosebumps we watched Cell Block H together . I'd give anything to spend one episode with her again some wounds never heal.Happy 2022 🌎 🌐 🤗
I used to watch prisoner with my beautiful mum who has sadly passed away we both loved this song and now my grandson who's 3 loves the song because I'd sing it to him when he was a baby to get him off to sleep and he still says sing roses which he calls the song
I can't believe this song is on youtube. I used to watch this series in the 80's here in the United States. My mother and I loved this song. I wish she were alive to hear it again.
I grew up listening to this theme tune, mum was a massive fan, I got into trouble myself in my younger years, was sat in my cell, "solitary due to bad behaviour," remember listening to the screws watching this on there tv, don't mind admitting I never cried as much as I did that night when the theme tune came on at the end.
I first started watching prisoner as a kid with mum...tvnz had a complete repeat of all episodes at 11pm each weekday night in the 1990s and I was hooked..I've literally seen every episode..for any young people that haven't seen it I fully recommend watching it from day one on a box set or off internet..awesome characters awesome acting and gripping storylines
I used to watch this in the early 90’s when I was young. I used to visit my grandparents on a Saturday and watch it with them as my grandad had ‘taped’ it off the t.v during the week. Listening to that theme tune has just taken me back to those wonderful times with the most amazing, caring, loving grandparents anyone could want or need ❤ I miss them both dearly and will forever cherish the wonderful memories of us watching this great program together 😊
I came here from the 1970 Incredible Hulk theme tune so I can't fully agree 100% this one is the saddest but I did come here straight afterwards lol. ❤️
Me and my brother used to watch this late night while I was 16 and he was 14. He used to sneak up to my room once my parents had gone to bed and we'd get stoned out of our minds while we watched it. Happy days! Loved the Freak, Lizzie and, of course, Top Dog Bea.
I love Prisoner Cell Block H. Years ago I went to see them for real in Liverpool. It was fantastic. I watch it on Freeview.I had to record the program as it was on late I had school the next day. My favourite program.
I remember watching this show in our den when I was in high school. It came on about 10 or 11 at nite. My girl would come over ( now my wife) to stay the nite with my sister and we'd sit up watching this show with my mom & dad. Then she'd sneak in my room later that nite! Loved high school!
bea Smith and the freck was my two favourite people love watching it with my mum wen I was a kid now I am watching it from the start on youtube from start to finish
I miss this show used to watch this every week day @4 ,The ending was kinda sad listening to the song as the cell block closed .I wonder if any replays were ever mad !?
@fairfax17 Fairfax It aired on US Televison from late 1979 to early 1981. And Due to controversial topics of a violent nature it aired late evenings 11:00-2:30 in the mornings. Also the major networks refused to carry the show. Instead it aired on the smaller networks.
My old mommy's favourite program ..used to pretend I liked it just to stay up late..I'm 43 now with 4 kids 2 grandchildren..but I did come to love it eventually..wat I wudnt give to have my old dad and mom back, and too be that innocent boy once again..blessing every from my era..who gone tru the same thing🙏
Our nan let us watch it in the late 80s. I was only about 4 when it first aired in 1987 on ITV! I remember watching it up and until the last episode in about 1998, when I was 15, so I basically grew up with it..
A Classic, just watched an old episode of Eastenders and noticed a dodgy staircase bannister, it brought me right back to the dodgy props in Cell block H. CLASSIC.
Anyone else reminiscing to a time before fooking Covid? The song takes me back to the early 90’s- i thought i was a mini gangster watching prisoner, listening to happy hardcore, ub40 and tracy chapman. Mis spent youth that some would say what a waste. I would go back tomorrow.
Man. Memories. My ethnic parents who had migrated to Australia from Greece, and us all kids all watching this together, my mum who hardly spoke English loved this show, and she would always sing this song when each episode ended. What an iconic tv series this was. Magnificent production that had us all completely captivated.
watching this now on thats uk tv 2 channel just started the whole series again the 3rd episode of series 1 tonight ❤ love it i watched it as a kid and then in my 20s and now in my 40s
It ended because someone smuggled a pair of kitchen scissors into the prison and they were able to cut a big hole in the wall and have a mass break out
Thinking of watching this , just my mum and I.....love my mama bear....her name is Veronica, she's struggled her whole life with people...she's an amazing woman, has been terribly ill with Multiple Sclerosis since 17, she's now in her 60,s and has lung cancer and dementia.....God please look after her 💔 xxxxxxxxxxx
Wow! That brings back so many memories. I can remember those wobbly walls & keys being rattled in make-shift locks. The father-in-law used to call it 'good rubbish'. You knew it was crap but you had to tune in to the next episode to find out what had happened.
RIP to my dearest mother, she used to looove this show.. watching it with her, is a memory I'll cherish forever.

Me too, but watched it late 80’s & round 10pm every Friday night
Same here, my wife now watches the remake
I watched this show when I was very young ... pleased to learn it was shot in my hometown of Melbourne. A true classic!

At one point it was on after Married with Children, in my area at least. Made an amazing late night double bill, along with a chinese.

I can't believe this song is on youtube. I used to watch this series in the 80's here in the United States. My mother and I loved this song. I wish she were alive to hear it again.
I cried at the end of every episode because of this song. As a child it was one of the only shows that every one in the house watched.
This song always makes me cry.
My mum showed me this intro as she loved prisoner cell block h and used to watch it every night with my great gran in our scotland home! nostalgic

Old vinegar with that smirk on her face when she had caused trouble between the prisoners. lol.

Watched this in the late 1970’s back in NZ - childhood memories 👍👍👍. Didn’t realize WENTWORTH on Netflix is a series based on the PRISONER .
I only came here for the song, but it was nice to see all the old inmates and screws.
Lovely song and wonderful program with such great characters my favourite was Rita the beater and Alice rock on Rita

Beautiful piece of music. Classic Aussie TV : )
Late Sunday or Monday night on ITV back in the late 80’s/early 90’s watching with my mum. Loved Bea & Vinegar Tits👌
I used to stay up late to watch this with my mum but it was the theme tune that got me into the show. Damn I miss the carefree days

I saw this on our PBS affiliate here in the States, and this show scared the shit out of me as a child, the lady guards in particular!
Oh the theme & the memories
I taught myself to play this on the piano when i was a teen.
I did too. What a beautiful song.
One of the best Australian tv shows. 👍👍
I was a bit too young when the show aired. It aired at 11PM in a local TV station in NYC. My older sister would stay up to watch it.
It ended because someone smuggled a pair of kitchen scissors into the prison and they were able to cut a big hole in the wall and have a mass break out
Only on youtube you can tell a joke that makes someone laugh 12 years later.
Brings back memories of being a kid at my uncles being aloud to stay up late and watch it
Love u uncle scobie

I just remembered how beautiful this song was.... Im surprised I recall the lyrics so well
Loved watching this with Grandma Malley.
I can still see Bea Smith, and Franky Doyle going at it!LOL!
everyone used to go on about the wonky sets, but the most unrealistic bit for me was the complete absence of lez ups.
"He use to give me roses, I wish he could again".
My mums favorite show, she even had the dvd's.
blazzingsaddles4 Do you know where you can get the DVDs?
+waivedwench on the internet

The pure fucking nostalgia of it all , sitting up late every night it was on . Good times 👌🏻
Wow! That brings back so many memories. I can remember those wobbly walls & keys being rattled in make-shift locks. The father-in-law used to call it 'good rubbish'. You knew it was crap but you had to tune in to the next episode to find out what had happened.
The only school nights my mum let me stay up late was to watch Prisoner, Mondays and Thursdays, ah memories !!!
