- After 20 years of watch collecting, why has perfection eluded me? I explain in a video titled, "State of the Broken Watch Collection."
My novel The Secret Life of Watch Addicts is on Amazon Kindle:

I am offended that no one has commended you for the heroic feat of setting the time on your entire collection just for this video!
McMahon, I like this style of video for a couple reasons: it's much more interesting than the default SOTC format, many of us have particular favorites in your collection (SLA055) and it's great to get that dopamine rush of seeing it again, and I love the authentic commentary about the wearing/ownership experience as time passes.
Man, I’m 61 and every video you put out hits home. I mean, come on, The Bowery Boys? 👊🏻
It doesn't matter how fancy a dive watch gets I'm always drawn to the 300m tuna aesthetic. It's the perfect size.
Off by 30 seconds a day is abysmal for a $1k+ watch. My King Turtle with the 4R movement is +5 sec/day on and off the wrist. Paid $398 new… man I love this watch! Most wrist time of any in my 10 watch collection.
I just bought the Uemura and I feel that I got that “one and done”, good quality, beautiful, versatile and accurate is all I need. Just deleted all my subscriptions to watch reviews channels and websites, theres too much temptations out there. You are the only survivor because I throughly enjoy your insights in this madness, could not unsubscribe xD. Cheers from Poland!
Awesome accomplishment. Best.
The quartz tuna is an amazing watch. I have a 1000 version. It is part 2 of my 2 watch lifestyle. My other watch is a Pelagos and whenever I strap on the Tuna I ask myself why I need or desire any other. The Tuna has it all. But still. Well. The Tudor. I. I. I …..
I think this guy likes seiko divers!
Jeff, your SLAs both look like one and dones. Especially on that $400 steel. They are pretty complete. Although I understand your problem. I just bought a titanium Dievas to justify another milestone in life. Whatever you gotta tell yourself I guess. I sold my Seikos but this is tempting me again. That tuna does look insane. I saw an EMT at work at an accident scene rocking that Tuna while in action. Looked even more insane.
I'm leaving Tudor slowly and getting into Seiko. Secured my Tuna SBBN049. Waiting to SLA051 to arrive. And thinking about blue MM300.
Your content speaks to my inner voice, solving watch issues and creating new ones.
This is great so thank you very much, Sir.
Tuna is the tastiest by far 🐟
In my humble opinion the two standout pieces are the Tuna and the Uemura. You seem to love them both and they are the best of both worlds. The Tuna is truly iconic, has all the benefits of a quartz watch (accuracy, grab-and-go and long-term reliability). The Uemura is a premium, limited edition mechanical timepiece that will always be desirable and it might be hard to find another if you sold it. I hope my tuppence worth is helpful…
Nice collection McMahon. Maybe it’s time to get out of your comfort zone and try something without a rotating bezel from a different part of the world.
Love the nostalgia!
Why not have them regulated? Sure, the 6R isn’t superlative, but it’s a tank and there is something to say for robustness
Stunning collection. Grrrrreat video. And i think i am in love with the Willard and 300MM.
These watches are starting to feel like old friends 😆
I sense that your continual purchase of Seikos, particularly those resembling the Rolex Submariner, is an attempt to fulfill a deeper desire. The subtle variations in style among your Seiko watches suggest that you’re not fully satisfied, perhaps because they don’t entirely capture what you're seeking. I believe there's a psychological barrier preventing you from pursuing higher-end brands, like a Roley
Seiko need to make solar quartz version's of their top designs like the SPB143.
They need to bring back the skx
Trust me, I’ve been through the same experience with Invictas. I accumulated more and more, switching from steel to gold-tone, from colored bezels to skeletonized designs, yet I was never completely satisfied. However, the day I acquired my Bluesy, the urge to buy another similar watch vanished entirely.
I’ve just sold my tuna 😂😂
I sold my mm300 blue last year and I’ve only 2 seikos left. Both skxs which are both going .
I’m also firmly in the Tudor bb club but I wouldn’t say no to a golden tuna.
I thought that when I moved up through the price tiers and finally got to the swiss watches that the madness would end, Nope!
I regulated my 6r35 movements and managed to get them within 5 seconds a day.
Naah, the SPB143 wears way better on the Divecore strap. My Joseph Bonnie Tropic just doesn’t work. Same for my SPB185. Only a BC 328 working for my 185. And this sucks as I want a Tropic to work. Could also be those stupid holes in the straps that doesn’t fit me perfect. Drives me crazy 😅
The 6R35 is frustrating. I want more watches but the 6R is keeping me from pulling the trigger. Is this the key to getting out of the cycle?
Sorry to be an enabler, but I was wondering if you have given any consideration to the purchase of a SBGX335, SBGX337, or SBGX339? I've gone down the rabbit hole of binge watching your videos, and I can't stop thinking that one of these might be right up your alley? 9F61 quartz offers dependability, just like your Tuna's 7C46. And just like the tuna, I think one of these would look right at home on your 8" wrist.
I've got a sickness for Seiko's as well, with the following in my collection: SLA021, SLA051, SLA071, SPB147, and SBGX337. So I can relate a lot to your struggles, haha! I wish however, that I had the control to keep my collection to 7 like yourself, as my current 24-piece collection can be a blessing and a curse.
Hopefully I have given you something to ponder, hehe. ;-)
I was tempted a few years ago but quartz at that price seems weird to me. 3-year battery life isn't great either.
Selling the tuna McMahon? You're just not happy until you're rebuying a watch. We all know you're a Tuna guy. The domed hard lex is stunning on the older model. I won't say anything if you rebuy it.
OK you have a nice collection of seikos
But your missing the best , a 62mas .its the best looking diver they do . Its up to you jeff . The spb143 etc are lookalikes , but they are just average . If you want a one and done then the 043 is the one.
Like sitting through the same comedy movie twice 😂😂
Can you swap the 6R movement for the 43r movement. Anyone out there try this ?
I think a Blue watch is suitable for people who don’t wear a black t shirt everyday
I beg to differ
Hi McMahon, what strap is that on the first Willard? I have an sbd053 on the way and I think that's the strap for me
Original gray Tropic
@JeffreyMcMahon thank you sir!
This is probably the wrong thing to comment on this video, but I recently visited a local AD to see if they could get ahold of an SLA023 and/or a S23633 (SBBN049) from Seiko Canada. 😅
To give this context, in recent years, I've been moving down the watch size spectrum, culminating in my purchase of a Rolex Explorer 124270, at retail, last August.
Then, almost on a whim, I purchased a pre-owned SPB183 a few months afterward and because of how well Seiko hides its dimensions on wrist, I find myself moving back up the size spectrum, becoming interested in the chunky, over-engineered Seiko divers
My system is two watches per season, the rest go in storage. Sounds sane, right? Fat chance. I wear my Summer watches and worry about my Fall watches, I wear my Fall watches and think of my Winter watches with fear and trembling. Today there is peace, sure, but watch chaos is always just over the horizon.
Jeff, your tropic straps wobble about too much. Have you got the wrong spring bars in there perchance? 🤔
Yes. 1.8. I wish they fit fat bars
I just wanted to comment and video deleted by McMan. Listen...
That Numara and SPB143 have to go. The Guild and Willard have to stay. You need to get SJE101.
Simple. Or..or...
SRQ uuuuuuu.
First!
Sell everything and buy a Submariner.
