My First Gibson: Billy Duffy of The Cult
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 гру 2021
- Growing up in England in the early 70s, Billy Duffy recounts his first time seeing a Gibson - a TV Yellow Les Paul™ Junior played by punk guitarist Johnny Thunders. In this episode of My First Gibson, he tells us how that experience led him to his first Gibson, a 70s Melody Maker™ in Raw Tobacco Sunburst.
Originally from Manchester, Billy first started playing guitar at the age of fourteen and, by the mid 1970s, was swept up in the punk movement. Before joining Death Cult with Ian Astbury, he played in numerous bands, including the Nosebleeds with future The Smith’s singer Morrissey, Studio Sweethearts, and Theatre of Hate. In 1984 Billy and Ian shortened the band name to The Cult, and the rest is history.

Billy Duffy is a beast. So under rated as a guitarist.
I saw him play a few years back and I think the monitors weren't working. He was getting pissed because he couldn't hear himself (Tulsa, OK). He sounded amazing and hit everything perfectly in spite of the technical issues.
I went and saw him (The Cult) with my girlfriend in 1991 (Sonic Temple Tour) on prom night instead of going to prom (Kansas City) no regrets! Amazing guitarist, one of the reasons I always wanted a Les Paul too!
everyone is under rated. that's the most cliched comment ever.
Whom are these under raters you speak of?
Dont worry mate, those in the know realize how awesome he is🤘🤘🤘
Don't think anyone really underrated him...
Billy is one of my guitar idols - his style seems simple, but he controls sonic chaos like few others. He’s one of the undercelebrated greats across 4 decades!!
I love Billy man. Criminally underrated guitarist. The Cult is in my top 5 of all time.
I could listen to Billy talk all day. He’s so interesting, and he tells great stories.
Fantastic player. The Cult are a fantastic live band. He gets a great sound from his Les Paul's and the White Falcon.
Somehow, as a teenager in the mid-80s, I'd missed hearing/ hearing of Billy. I distinctly remember the feeling of hearing those first few notes from "Fire Woman" and I was hooked. Down the rabbit hole.
Billy Duffy is still one of my favorite guitarists/ musicians.
Thanks! 🙏
Electric completely stands out as unusual for the times during which it was released and hasn't aged a day.
This man is my absolute guitar idol.
Billy Duffy is a legend!
Genius idea! I'm putting my name and details on paper inside ALL my guitars - especially my 2 Gibsons!
Genius!
My first memory as a kid was seing the sonic temple cover with the guy holding a LP custom and from that day forward had to have one, my first new guitar was a custom that i sadly sold in hard times to purchase my 1st house, 30yrs later ive owned 4 and currently have 3 thatl stay in my stable for life, this man changed my life and started my love of that guitar, great to see this clip....
I've been a fan of Billy Duffy from his days in Theatre of Hate - Death Cult - The Cult. To me Billy will always be associated with his Gretsch White Falcon. But, you cannot deny the sound he yields with his Gibson Les Paul (Give a listen to their albums "Electric and Sonic Temple). Plus he has a real cool Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Junior single cut in TV yellow made specifically for him among his collection of guitars. “This one goes back to an offshoot of the Camp Freddy band and we played a party at on a stage in the parking lot of the Gibson Guitar Custom Shop in Nashville, Tennessee. It was a bunch of friends having fun, making music including guitar players Billy Morrison, Jerry Cantrell and me plus Franky Perez singing. Gibson flew us out there and we played a bunch of cover songs and we each got to pick a guitar that Gibson would make for us in the Custom Shop. I chose the TV Yellow Les Paul Junior and the guy who actually made it handed it to me and I played it in the gig there and then.
Cool Guy!!
Years ago (mid/late 90s) The Cult played at HOB / Nola. Me & my gf (at that time) hung out at bar after the show. Low & behold Billy came up at the end of the bar & he ordered a drink & I told the bartender “hey what he ordered it’s on me”. We raised each other’s drink & that was the coolest thing EVER!!!
Never got to meet him close up :(
Seems like such a genuine cool dude. Love the stories. The Cult wrote some fantastic shit.
I could pretty much listen him to tell these stories all day.
Saw him with the cult back in late 80's early 90's at the Boston Garden. They rocked it for sure. Great show, Awesome guitarist, Legendary guitars!
I was at that gig! It was early 1990, with Dangerous Toys and Bonham opening. I’ve seen The Cult many times since, but that was probably the best show of theirs I’ve ever seen. Ian especially, was really 𝘰𝘯 that night.
@@Guido.Fawkes.1 you know it’s a good show when you remember how good it was 30+ years later!
I have had the pleasure of being front row, right side for the Cult and going face to face with his stage rig. It's an experience.
I think it’s time we got a Duffy signature Les Paul Custom!!
That would be cool to see, but he's currently with Gretsch and his famous White Falcon model. He's played that guitar on everything.
PLEASE PLEASE Gibson give this man a signature guitar. I would love to see Billy Duffy have a natural top Les Paul Custom. Billy Duffy is such a fantastic guitar player. The Cult rocks!
PLEASE, do a Riff Lords with this MASTER! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
(And also with Slash
Altringham can have that effect on you ☺ You can't go wrong with a Les Paul Custom 😎
Great musician. Wow, first Gibson is a LP Custom. So cool. My first Gibson was a LP Special SL. $600 on eBay. Flat slab of wood...actually sounds pretty good with new pickups in it. I still have it.
I met him, he slapped my back as I said bye, nearly broke me spine.
Met him in a pub once. Such a gent. Sat with us for around 20mins or so.
Hi, Billy,
I can hear the song playing in the background! And l remember that was one of the songs that was Played at the Phoenix Toronto July 2012!!✨ I was upfront Dancing away and Staring at You and Your Beautiful Guitar!! WOW!! WHAT A FANTASTIC NIGHT!!

Billy is indeed an amazing guitarist and my favourite! Does anyone remember their song conquistador? So good !!!
One of the greatest! Duffy should be called a “Riff Lord”.
I learned how to play to the Electric album and got my own LP special TV single cut in the 90s. I've owned a lot guitars over the years and that 90s special beats them all (after I swapped the p100s for p90s of course).
A true, straight-talking, no-BS Northern English Gentleman. The best of the best.
His work on the song the river is amazing.
I just loved the way he did the solo on Eddie song.... That s one of the best respiro delay exceptional tone guitar solo ever ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great history, real living guitar hero.
Very cool story.
Billy!
We need a Duffy signature Les Paul Custom!
I thought Billy Duffy played a Gretsch White Falcon. I think he even has a signature Falcon. The first time I saw him he was playing a black Les Paul Custom. She Sells Sanctuary!
Legend
😎 Thanks Billy, GTV ⚓️
Billy always a fantastic interview but very interested in that piece of gear in the background.
Thunders... that's a good start!!
I remember the little guitar shop in Alty - I bought my first amp there, I think it was called a "Custom Sound Trucker", transistor combo. All I could afford at the time!
Great story. The Cult rocks too. My band plays Peace Dog.
💜THE CULT 💜
✨ FOREVER ✨
whats that Gibson amp in the background???
A Legend here !
Great story
Gibson , the best guitars ever !!!
I own a real USA Gibson LP. studio It won't stay in tune like a G & L ASAT does.
RIFF LORD
As if the guy couldn't get any cooler, he rocks up with Jack Nicholson vibes.
Billy Duffy has, for me, the most iconic pose with a Les Paul. Take a look at the Sonic Temple album cover, and you can just hear it.
He made me want a Les Paul more than any other player. Billy deserves a proper Les Paul Custom signature.
Was in the works at one point.
Cmon Gibson!!!!! Make it happen 🤘🏻🙏🏻
He's a brilliant guitarist.
Love them natural wood finish les pauls he had around sonic temple days in 89..wish gibson would do a signature model of them, heard they wanted to make it a mick ronson model instead of billy but even that got scrappeed
I used to live in Altrinham but was mostly out and about in Sale.
Billy is one of my favorties! Where is Ian? Where is the new album?
I really wish they'd can the background music in these interviews.
mine is my eb5 wine red changed the bridge to a hipshot bad ass bass guitar. !!!!!!!!!!!
But the Johnny Thunders LP was a doublecut I think :/
An Under rated giant
I worked with his dad.
In 1989 I used to have actual dreams about Reebok Pumps.
It’s far more lame, but i lusted just the same.
Fucking legend
Overall a nice bloke. Very approachable compared to Ian. He gave me his white signature pick after we talked about effects pedals. Johnny Thunders of NY Dolls gave him his pick when he met him as a teenager, so I think he was inspired to do the same to other younger guitarists.
Fun fact the white Gibson LP that Steve jones had actually belonged to Sylvain and was “ borrowed” by Malcom McLaren .
Big up the Alty!
👍
What amp is that!?
I saw him front row LA Lakers.
The cult is the greatest!
I just put my name, address and parents’ phone number on a piece of paper, in the selector switch cavity of my Les Paul
Billy “freaking” Duffy
Billy Duffy Riff Lords...please.
Agreed!

hi
Tone God
The dream time love albums r the Gretsch white falcon all the way
“ So anyway then I started playing Gretsch. “
I'm in total agreement that Billy is one of if not THE most underrated guitar players that were popular in that era, but what I remember from watching Cult videos is him playing a Gretsch. Hes literally the only player I grew up identifying with that brand besides Chet Atkins.
CSNY all played Gretsch guitars, esp. Neil Young and Stephen Stills.
@Austin Knowlton
I'm from Detroit (blow the reveille)!
Don't forget Eddie Cochrane/George Harrison/Brian Setzer/Malcomb Young/Billy Zoom/Poison Ivy.
All _'Gretch'ers'._
Peace. Stay Healthy!
- Dave B.
For a second I thought this was Jack Nicholson
Okay great guitarist with a great story. With that said, it’s a shame that the “owners” of Gibson have decided to monetize the Gibson brand and overprice everything. Seriously, stories like this and first experiences of new guitar players won’t begin with Gibson. Corporate greed is an ugly thing when it comes to music. Fender is still profitable and you can still get an American made Strat or Tele for around $1k. Sadly, a new USA Gibson is the price of a used car.
Imagine buying that cream LP and finding that note. You'd be made up
When are you guys gonna do a slash one,. Slash made so many kids wanna play gibson les paul,. Its the least you can do,. I mean you have these full lengh icons on jerry kirk and stuff,. Those guys have done nothing for gibson
idk why Gibson is still relevant. There was NOTHING innovative in decades and the quality is shit. I mean.... The headstock-snap is a running gag man
