Met Billy a few times, such a classy dude. Everyone loves the 80s Cult as they should, but don't sleep on Choice of Weapon and Hidden City, both are epic.
Agreed 100% Huge influence on my playing and he absolutely is the kind of guy/player you want in the band. Serves the song and still leaves a very distinct mark.
The Cult's "Love" album was a HUGE influence for me. Such a unique sound and production. Recently spent a stupid sum on an original, sealed vinyl pressing from 1985. The I cracked it open, and played it. So good. Thanks Dave, Marc, and Mr. Duffy for the great discussion.
I saw the Cult open for Idol’s Whiplash Smile tour.. went to show to see Steve Stevens.. went bonkers and bought scalpers tickets and was second row floor…. All I knew of the Cult was She Sells Sanctuary.. thought it would be interesting but didn’t really care. Lights go out. And BOOM… the sound was unbelievable. It was like getting hit by a truck but in a good way. My buddy and I looked at each other and then proceeded to head bang and foot stomp for the entire set. It was a different band. We both actually came away from the show as huge Cult fans. One of the best opening bands I had ever seen. Thanks Billy!
...Friedman Amps, & Billy Duffy! A great combination isn't it. Billy's tone definitely lends itself to the favor of the Gritty Hard Rocking growl of Dave's Friedman Amps! Great interview, I love hearing from Billy as he did write, & record one of my top favorite albums of ALL TIME! "Electric" was a mainstay on my turntable from the time I started High School till several years after & I had dropper out of collage.the Albums seriously full of some true Bangers!" That albums amazing, start to finish!
Saw them open for metallica July 1999 Worcester Centrum and they blew my mind. Saw them again 6 months later as they headlined the Boston Garden Sonic Temple tours. 🤘🤘
Been a Cult/Duffy fan since early days, the best Cult album is the one I'm in the mood to hear. Love playing along with them. Also love the remixes on the box set. Last saw the band in '18 in Charlotte, Billy if you see this I was the guy basically to your back left all night trying to learn stuff Rock on😎!
Till this day The Cult was the best concert i have ever seen. They were playing a stadium in Lisbon (maybe with Metallica and Suicidal tendencies I believe), and the night before or after, they played a small club (Gartejo). It was such a crazy concert!!! I remember Billy broke his head coming from backstage to do the encore!!!! A small club in warm Lisbon, everyone jumping....sound just in your face rock n roll!!! Fu****g Amazing!!!! I played the previous day on that club!! Great times!! Love Billy....and you can see he is a great guy!!! Good job Marc and Dave!!
I missed this. I going to watch this today. Met Mr Duffy in 2017 while on tour in NZ. Amazing humble rock star. Great tone, great songwriter, player of taste and legend...my favourite Cult track live...Rise...it’s a banger 🔥
I realised a little while ago that I listened to The Cult waaaay more than I listened to G'n'R back in the day. Not knocking Appetite in any way (dearly love it and aw 'em on their first UK tour) but I spun Sonic Temple and Electric more often, and nowadays it's no different. What a great band and Billy is a great guy. Check out The Pursuit of Tone that Ernie Ball made a while back for an hour of pure Duffyness.
What a great conversation! Thanks Billy, David and Marc! I got my first Marshall JCM 800 50W and matching cab in ‘89. I remember playing a B/A chord and thinking “Wild Flower”! Have a good weekend guys :)
Great interview with Billy Duffy. Great to hear him go into detail on a lot of the Cult's recordings, his guitars and sounds. I agree with him on Boss pedals -- ubiquitous, dependable, working-class sound and tone machines. It's difficult to not be able to get a decent tone using a Boss pedal, although some have a bit more width than others.
Can’t say enough of how much I enjoy and appreciate this show. So much info, fun and inspiration, keep doing what you’re doing guys! 🤘🏻 Looking forward to the next few shows too!
I just went and listened to 'Love' and 'Electric' back to back. Had no idea Rick Ruben was behind Electric, what an album. Love the tight, loud drums in the mix.
A huge influence on me. Both in gear and style, a textured riffing monster. To this day, I blend single-ended Class A amps (Matchless, Vox) with roaring Marshalls and a Les Paul, with a few effects. BD, Dean Deleo and Jerry Cantrell - all guys who play for the SONG.
LOL - I've NOT seen Bill play live four times. First time, I had tickets for the Cult in '85, didn't fancy it, gave the tickets away. Second and third time, a mate's band was touring the UK at the end of '99, Bill was playing in the support band... I was late for the gigs, missed the support band (though, on the second night I was stood at the back of the hall watching, him and Mike Peters came in and Bill asked me for a light). Fourth time was a Dead Men Walking gig in '03, he didn't play for some reason (think he was ill) and a mate of mine stood in for him. Met him backstage on the mate's tour. Nice bloke. Seems we used to go in all the same guitar shops way back (in Manchester).
Many thanks Guys, great interview. As a teenager in London in the eighties The Cult were a rare band. Headbangers 🤟, indie, goths, new romantics, everyone thought they were cool,
Fantastic guys. Another great tone talk. The holy trinity. 3 of my favourite things. Left handed guitars, Friedman Amps and The Cult. My band played a gig at Liverpool Uni in the mid 80s, Love had just come out, we played a cover of Rain and it went down an absolute storm, I remember it like it was yesterday. Thank You Billy!!
She Sells Sanctuary was boss in the film Layer Cake. Speaking of which going to watch the Cake disk after this video. Shapin up to be a good night it is.
Great episode guys. Billy Duffy is the definition of cool. Now regarding that 59, 10 grand was about right for the period (mid 80s) if I'm not mistaken, but yeah in hindsight Billy should have really kept it.
OMG Billy the man DUFFY. One of the greatest underrated players in the world. Billy you helped me lrean how to be me and not worry what people think GOD bless
The Cult was an odd one for me. I was a die-hard heavy metal fan, but I found them in 1989 with Sonic Temple. It had a bit of a 'coke' fueled sound that fit that era perfectly. To this day though, their sound brings back specific memories in a way other music often does not for me. Yet, the tone still seems fresh today - I wish the grunge scene had melded with other bands of that era instead of crushing them under it's weight.
I saw Death Cult and then the cult as they became, live in uk several times we would go whenever they got near Birmingham because that’s all we could afford😂 One of my favourite bands ever and I still anticipate every album to this day. I could not begin to describe just how fuckin cool the uk was back then music wise 🤘 Billy Duffy ian Asbury, Steve Jones sex pistol, the coolest lads to ever grace the stage Barr none. I have the gift of my own guitar playing to thank billy for!!
1:58:25 Exactly my approach! (I wish I was talking about arenas and three 4x12s, but I'm just taking the same approach with 1 combo lying at my feet next to my monitor in club capacities of 250 people max. I hear what I wanna hear and I trust the FOH to do his job.)
A long time ago, Paul Rivera was mentioned as a potential guest. Did he decline? Also I know there is not a lot of love on here for Boogie amps, but I THINK, Randal Smith would be a great guest.
Slayer's Reign in Blood and The Cult's Electric have that in common (I believe) that Rick Rubin squeezed the essence out of the band and made of every track a ball of pure rock'n'roll energy. Those are 2 of my fav albums EVER. The holy trinity of pure energy in r'n'r for me would be those 2 and Deep Purple In Rock. Cheers!
Guys, do your homework..the follow-up questions were pretty bad..you have someone like Duffy, ask some unique questions.. if it wasn't for his energy, this would of tanked..don't shoot the messenger
Met Billy a few times, such a classy dude. Everyone loves the 80s Cult as they should, but don't sleep on Choice of Weapon and Hidden City, both are epic.
Major influence. Killer guitarist. He’s the kind of guitarist you want in a band. Plays for the song. Great riffs. Great tone.

It's like an aphrodisiac jacket!!!!!!
Same. I’d just started playing drums when that came out. I still listen to it now. Often.
My fave guitarist!!! Have seen him and The Cult a million times. Also, my fave band.
Love his guitar playing!👍👍🎸😎

Sonic Temple was 1989.

Such a great guy Billy..could listen to him all day!
Awesome show. I'm a HUGE Cult fan and Billy is one of my favorite players. Thanks for getting him on the show. He's such a cool guy.
Billy is way more down to earth than I ever imagined. Great to listen to thank you.
FANTASTIC interview. For a huge Cult fan, this hit the spot. Thanks.

Some of the greatest albums of the 80’s early 90’s.
Killer live as well!
billy duffy is consistently the most intelligent and entertaining interview

great portrait of Billy's beginnings in the Morrissey biopic England Ss Mine

Iconic guitarist, definitely a massive part of making want to pick up the instrument
This was amazing!
The Love album is a classic start to finish. Top 5 all time for me. Thanks for this. Loved it.
I dunno, The Cult never were my thing, but Billy is such a great hang. Made me listen to my Sonic Temple CD again. Great talk!
Love into Electric into Sonic Temple
That’s a 3 album run as good as any band ever!!
And it didn't stop there

Have Billy Duffy and Larry Mullen Jr of U2 ever been seen in the same room together ?
Great interview.Thanks
Happy 60th Birthday Billy Duffy
I think he meant 'Planet Boy' by the Dolls. Great song, great band!
Marc I was hoping the whole time you would ask what guitars and amps on sonic temple and you totally came through!!! Your the man Marc! 👊
Awesome! I was curious also. Great album and the tone is killer

Been a fan of the cult since Columbia house sent me a sweet deal i couldnt resist back in 1990.
Great show guys , thank you ! Any chance of getting Ace Frehley some day ?
OMG Billy the man DUFFY. One of the greatest underrated players in the world. Billy you helped me lrean how to be me and not worry what people think GOD bless
Lovely natter with a good bloke! Billy's speaking voice is uncannily similar to Rob Halford's.
Best gear show. Did my third Egnater amp class and the whole class listens to this show. We need the Friedman Class!
What Friedman is Billy using he never said. Thanks Love the Show

I own several Gretsch only because I wanted to be Billy Duffy. Saw them on the Metallica tour in 1988 or 1989. Amazing.
