"The Gift of Fear" brought me here.

SO glad I found this online! I just read about this letter-writer guy in the book "The Gift Of Fear" by Gavin DeBecker, and the show handled this potentially dangerous stalker in a PERFECTLY genteel and whimsical way!

I don't really think he was dangerous or anything. Wouldn't anyone of that time period dream of this? Some people just have more persistence than others.

I'm in the middle of the Gift of Fear right now and I had to look this up immediately. It's such a strange and interesting story.

@@thedailyreportchannel68 writing over 800 letters, while being told repeatedly no? That's a stalker.

I'm not saying he wasn't a stalker, I'm just saying I don't think he was dangerous.

Sad to hear. He gave me a phone call not long after I posted this just to thank me for posting it, as he'd never gotten to see it. We chatted for about 30 minutes. He's a very nice fellow, and that was one of the highlights of his life. He was so grateful to Johnny and Ed.

Such sad news...& to read the other post he had NEVER seen a tape of this until it was posted to You Tube! That's terrible! So, so glad he got to see it before he past on, far too young. May he be resting well...& smiling.

Searing was a salesman, actor, pilot and inventor. He never got violent or threatened harm to anyone when persistently asking to go on Johnny Carson.

Got recommended this video, and I don't even remember this particular episode, but that was really cool. After watching this video I read about some of the back story on this and he had written The Tonight Show over 800 times just to introduce Johnny on the show in Ed's place. His obit said that one single appearance opened up many doors of opportunity in acting for him. Talk about the power of persistence! RIP John.

Just saw this episode on Antenna TV. What a sweet gesture on behalf of Johnny and the show.

I would imagine that some people thought that all Ed did was announce the show, throw out a few 'Heyoos' and laugh at Johnny's jokes, thinking that they could do that too. However, there was a lot more to it than that. Ed was a showman in his own right, and knew what it took to make good television and made Johnny's star shine ever more brighter.

This Has to Be One of the Coolest Moments Ever on the Tonight Show! I Just Recently Saw that Show on an Oldies Channel.I Was Very Impressed with the Performance that the Man Gave and I Was Happy for Him that He Got to Finally Realize His Lifetime Dream! So Sorry to Have Heard of His Passing.

Searing was no where near a "Potentially dangerous stalker". He always wrote professional correspondence, used his first and last name, identified what he did for a living, where his office was, etc. Just a guy who knew that if you were going to do business, you had to make the contacts yourself. NO ONE EVER thought he was a danger. This was back "when" people knew how to behave and still be "entrepreneurially aggressive". :)
Further, DeBecker is good at what he does, which is to "make the sale" to show business people who "think" they need too much protection. DeBecker is not the "profiler" he thinks he is.
