Glad to see ya back! :)
Old servers are always interesting to look at because they quite frankly represent a good part of history, as they carried early networks and were essentially the ancestors of the backbone of what we take for granted these days. Thanks for getting these and showing them to the world. It is an interesting insight for me (born in 2004, had DSL/broadband my whole life, internet was v much integrated into society even then) to see how network I/O was handled in the earlier times.

Thanks for the reply! That's a great way to look at it! I always enjoy the history of the machines when I get them too. Pretty cool to think these were ordered new for someone at one point and now we have them 20 years plus later

Not to mention alot of old servers can see alot of at home use. Wouldn't recommend for photo storage but with enough Pies and stuff you can make a whole smart house kind of system. even for just regular security camera drives if your not recording in 4k-8k and just recording in 720? should work perfectly fine. Love this tech and being able to rescue it from the scrap yards to give it a new use in a new home.

These machines are a Master Class on how to build machines to work after the third wave of Alien invasion (24/7)^3

I love these old servers. They don’t seem that old to me though. When I was just starting to get into servers, networking, and programming in high school, these models were state of the art.

"so we are just on par with an Athlon 64 dual-core" - ah, late 90s, early 2000s progress.

Pretty much lol. You can even research now on the passmark site! The proliant gets 1200 cpu score! It would hold up against stuff from 5 or 6 years later which is still decent even relative to today.

though the memory bus is 64bits I wonder what a 32 bit operating system does with the memory.

I used to work for a web hosting company in the late 90's and I used to build web/sql servers on these old Compaq equipment. PL 1600,1850,5500, 30000

Did that server really show up with 2 tape drives and 3 cd-rom drives?

    • @dom80TA
      @dom80TA  2 роки тому +1

No lol. I added all those in! Fun fact the original CD-ROM that came with it didn't actually work

@@dom80TA I was wondering. It is funny to see how small companies would purchase $$$ worth of equipment and then cheap out in other spots. I thought that is what I was seeing. :)
