It’s fun to clown Mark for his shameless plugs of these books, but I’ve legit learned A LOT about writing and storytelling from this guy. I realize now that Vegeta is practically universally loved as a character because he goes through what very much appears to be a negative change arc up until he meets his son, and then becomes a positive change once he is given something more important than himself to really care about: a family. He goes to pretty extreme lengths to reject this after realizing that it also gives him a weakness, but ultimately decides it matters more to him that he has a wife and son he loves, and even cares about the man who keeps one-upping him. Even now, there’s no real limit to how much Vegeta can continue to develop as a dad, a husband, and a dude who can just lighten up and have fun in general. If I showed a person who hasn’t seen Dragonball 1 minute of Scouter Vegeta, then 1 minute of Vegeta trying to convince Whis to train him, their head would explode.
Zamasu started off as a God who viewed Mortals as lower beings that were a danger to themselves and hoped his hand could guide them to be better if Gowasu allowed him. After his fight and investigation into Goku (Watching the video of the fight where Goku had some bits of dialouge referring to 'not being the God's pawns' to Hit), he became a God who viewed Mortals as lower beings that were a danger to everything around them and took it as his duty to protect the world by any means necessary. By the end of the arc, he stood alone and his justice was rejected by the world, by the Gods and by the Mortals that now stood on even ground with him. And he couldn't handle the idea that he had gone to such extremes only to be wrong and let his entire mind deteriorate.
Gowasu’s response really reminds me of yoda’s “”therapy”” to anakin in revenge of the sith. A mentor gives a non-solution to a mental issue, ultimately ending in radicalization and destruction. Update: I gave a hell of a lot of thought to the yoda therapy scene, and I realized I was dead wrong. Yoda was entirely right. He gave anakin the truth. What else could he have said? Lied to him and told him he could stop death like palpatine did?
Bartek Kubica yoda failed multiple times in the prequels. Hell, he even failed once in the original trilogy. Revenge of the sith was really a turning point for him. He learned from that failure and became a much better Jedi, in isolation. away from a dogmatic order.

@@TotallyNotMark lol I’m two years late to this cuz I forgot I even made this comment, but uh, probably not. I think Zamasu was strongest at the beginning of the future trunks arc. As the story went on though, both it and he just kinda got weaker.
I still think it would have been better had the "Present" Zamasu actually seen the light and become a good guy, keep the evil Zamasu who took gokus body in an alternate future and the other alternate Zamasu he teamed up with, be keep the present one around so that he can see what his "utopia" would mean doing, let him see all the suffering he'd cause and just how far gone his other counterparts are, have him be the one to offer his potara to Goku and Vegeta. And heck, bring him to Universe seven so he can see a better example of mortals, earth may not be perfect but it certainly would have been a better example then that barbarian planet.

I feel like you keep glossing over the part I feel most people hated the most about the Goku Black arc: Zeno. While you do have a point, I feel the biggest thing that people hated about the Goku Black arc was that it kept escalating and escalating till suddenly in one fell swoop, everything became meaningless and we needed an infuriating deus ex machina to solve the problem. I feel that had they ended Zamasu and the arc at the point Trunks wins, we wouldn't all be so bitter.
Your videos are always well-crafted, intelligent, thorough and well-written. Hell, I still rewatch a lot of your old video essays and they helped me get into Dragon Ball, which I hadn’t watched in years before the Goku analysis video came out. You’re very good at this, keep it up!
Listening to you break down characters, arcs, and everything else in this series has greatly improved my intentionality and direction when writing. Thank you so much 🙏🏾. This was the best way for me to come to understand the basic elements of writing
Honestly I'm not big on most reviews of shows, but your channel is so amazing, you go in depth enough to be interested, but not enough to lose your train of thought, and out of all your videos this is my favorite, you put so much effort into this, and it's so evident, idk if you'll even see this, but just if you do, know you did such a good fucking job
So, really the problem that I have with Zamasu is that once he actually becomes a villain, he suddenly turns really preachy about how perfect he is and how he's preventing destruction...despite having just wiped out the majority of all life across all universes in his timeline. It's just handled really gracelessly. By contrast, Goku Black is clearly a distinct character who is actively shown to be degrading into that which he hates - he has the body of a mortal, the blood of a Saiyan, and he clearly gets just as much of a thrill out of a good fight as Goku does, the more he taps into Goku's power. He shadows Goku really well, taking the idea that "Goku likes to fight" to its logical extreme: "Goku Black likes to destroy." By contrast...Zamasu keeps talking about how he's fixing everything by destroying all mortal life, which completely goes against his viewpoint that life needs to be safeguarded in a more direct way, with the Kais taking direct measures in teaching life to be peaceful, utilizing both reward and punishment. The difference is that Goku Black clearly doesn't hold this viewpoint any more, where Zamasu seems to still hang onto it.
I think that you were missing a bit about the dynamic between trunks and zamasu. Trunks being the struggler that is the farthest thing from a god in the story at that point in time. The lie that zamasu believed was simply that he didn’t believe in anything but himself which is what trunks as a character opposes. He’s been forced to be alone and realizes that it’s the furthest thing from what is ideal. That’s why he is always reaching out for help even though he is emotionally distraught as shown from him attacking goku at the beginning.
Bro I have seen your videos popped but never took a gander at them until yesterday. Your analysis on cell & frieza were amazing and I have to say the intro for zamasu where you said "This...is zamasu" I got goosebumps man your work is amazing keep it up!

Adrián Alonso Thanos’ plan never meant to make sense, you’re not supposed to agree with it. He is a genocidal maniac with a god complex. The reason he works is because: 1) His character is properly developed. He’s a madman who thinks his flawed outlook on the world is correct, and the movie explores that. 2) He reacts to stuff like a real person should. He shows actual emotion in his some of his scenes - he was surprised when Loki told him he had no problem with him torturing Thor, he was sad when he was forced to kill Gamora, he was happy when he finally completed his plan, etc.

They couldn't think of a better excuse to have him Wipe out half of all life in the universe in a "justified" Way? Come on
What I like about zamasu is that he didn't hate all mortals, he just wanted to help the universe like plucking weeds in a garden, but gowasu didn't help him to ease his concerns so he wants to kill all mortals, believing his own lie.
Zamasu did start as a villain, it just had to be brought out of him. His heart was full of hate for a long time, and he kept it bottled up. Then he formulated a calculated plan and acted it out. Even Beerus and Whis could sense something dark and ominous about him before he even began Zero Mortals or became Black.
I just realized, zamasu “final blow” in his initial fight with goku mimics the blow beerus gives goku to end their first battle when goku could only go up to ss3. It’s interesting that it shows it’s not just his power level increasing but his skill level.
I'm so glad you made a video on Zamasu! He is by far my favorite villain in DBS. I really hope he makes a return somehow, he was killed by b.s in the anime lol

Do you mean the different dubs or the different versions (DBZ, GT, Super)?
@@MattTheHuman9 Well, making version comparasion is pointless, GT one maybe was sad but at the same time almost written character out of entire story and Super was even worse. It was one of the worst fanservice moments in all of Super, Toei completly missed the fucking point of original scene from DBZ and simply rebooted it to give "a nice touch".

@@blaineishere3851 Yes:) I guess this is Yodas 'failure' (gasp)

I'm pretty sad that we couldn't seen a slower transition to him becoming evil .They could have made him the protagonist for a few episodes, maybe even make him likeable, and then really built him up. he could've been an even greater villain, and the story would've been so much more tragic.
Compared to the other antagonists in Dragon Ball, Zamasu is a breath of fresh air.
Would you say he's your fav?
That wouldn’t of worked since he’s probably join in he has the same beliefs as them this is right before he kills his mentor though maybe fused zamasu and the sword of hope works like stardust breaker and purifies him

Nah because it was always Xanadu’s soul in control. Black was just a vessel of power and a means to an end.

Yeah no fucking shit. You think Toriyama was bullshitting the whole story and only *now* are we are able to unveil the depth of his storytelling via this redcoat's appropriation of a book he read once?
Get over yourself, and recognize Mark for the shill he has become.
Mark could just have the book reference in the comments without 20% of the video being "according to someone else in this book, they have their conclusions. Cool huh?"
Read books about narritave and explore dragon balls narrative with those concepts. Making a video saying "hey this character is bad, and why they are bad is this book which explains a "bad character. Based on the books "bad character" this is a bad character. End of video.
Stop phoning it in Mark. Get off your ass and make a compelling and creative video that isn't riding on the coattails of an already established assessment of storytelling.

11:48 Zamasu’s cute spray in Overwatch
So, really the problem that I have with Zamasu is that once he actually becomes a villain, he suddenly turns really preachy about how perfect he is and how he's preventing destruction...despite having just wiped out the majority of all life across all universes in his timeline. It's just handled really gracelessly.
By contrast, Goku Black is clearly a distinct character who is actively shown to be degrading into that which he hates - he has the body of a mortal, the blood of a Saiyan, and he clearly gets just as much of a thrill out of a good fight as Goku does, the more he taps into Goku's power. He shadows Goku really well, taking the idea that "Goku likes to fight" to its logical extreme: "Goku Black likes to destroy."
By contrast...Zamasu keeps talking about how he's fixing everything by destroying all mortal life, which completely goes against his viewpoint that life needs to be safeguarded in a more direct way, with the Kais taking direct measures in teaching life to be peaceful, utilizing both reward and punishment.
Zamasu is ideologically driven. Just like the MCU Thanos. That’s what makes them such good villains.
Thanos’s plan (wiping out the inhabitants of the universe starting from scratch) is literally just Project Zero Mortals.

Adrián Alonso Thanos’ plan never meant to make sense, you’re not supposed to agree with it. He is a genocidal maniac with a god complex. The reason he works is because:
1) His character is properly developed.
@@jeremiahvaleska8464 ,
1)except that he is never refered as insane in the movie (which is very dumb considering his title is "the mad titan") and focused WAY too much into making him relatable, also, while he may have been off to a good start in IW (a dumb as hell villain but a good one) the very much dropped the ball in endgame were they Turned him into a generic destroy-everything villain, I guess it was suposed to be a Reveal of his true nature but it was handled quite poorly
2) oh no she killed the daughter that he had previously to infinity war shown no kind of affection, granted the scene was marvelous (as was the rest of the film really) but like thanoses ideology it felt ass-pulled, overpopulation, really?
