I know people nowadays may not like Doug Tenappel due to the controversy, but if you ask me, I still love his artworks. Stuff like Earthworm Jim, and The Neverhood are awesome.
+Gecko 1993 I totally agree! That's why I think separating art from artist is so important, this way people can enjoy Doug TenNapel's work without having to associate it with his personal views.
I love Doug and his work. I honestly do have different views than him personally, but I can see that this man is a caring, and loving soul, regardless of his personal views. I don't think he wishes ill on anyone. God bless Tennapel, and may he get his stories out there!
You know what? Making a comic is probably one of the most time- consuming and maddening things for me. Each panel needs to be drawn perfectly, and that's something I don't have the patience for. So respect for this guy (and all comic artists)
Cool video enjoyed it thoroughly. And remember turn off the lights, conserve energy - so there's resources left for using a gallon of water to clean a #3 brush.
His take on the emptiness of using digital tools instead of doing it traditionally is exactly where I'm at with game programming. I COULD use a commercial game engine to script gameplay and drag things in place to crap out a game. But there's more fun to programming the little things with a lower level framework that keep me wanting to do it.
man this was the most random happy accidently stumbled onto video i've seen on this subject and it's been seriously one of the most informative. i loved to see how he cleaned that brush. that was legit and honest. you can tell that he really has his heart in his work and in his tools. i'm currently (possibly in the next 10mins) going to order brushes to start learning to ink... bad part is i just bought that very same BAD ink like two days ago lol. btw... what's so bad about it??
This is the guy who did Earthworm Jim. Great video. Never seen anyone suck ink or paint out of a ferrule lol Hope it's not toxic. I've heard that ink kills those, & Winsor & Newton Series 7 expensive. That brush is $25. I ink with Copics but learned (from Todd McFarlene & now him) to use a brush for comics. I'm going to buy Sumi Ink & a that brush to try it. I've always wanted a 7 series anyway.
I suck at inking BUT i work on getting batter at it. I use to be just a pens guy Coz I am more of a penciler then any thing els BUT now its 95% brush and 5% pens for me. BUT i steal suck at inking AND you gave some good tips. I knew about some of the stuff BUT you shown me some new stuff i could do SO i have to say thank you. 5/5 man.
The odd thing is, I just watched a video recently with Doug TenNapel going through the steps on how he makes his comic books digitally anymore because it's faster, the video was from 2011. So if he wants to sell his pages he makes limited edition prints to sell at cons.
@wohoSG You have to practice a lot longer than 1 year to be good. Of course, It all just depends on what you think is "Good". If I thought that someone was my idol it doesn't mean that you think he's good. Practice all the time and eventually you'll be quite satisfied with your work. Good luck!
I feel the same way, I can ink pretty fast with the computer but it feels weird. I prefer real drawing and inking, heck, even coloring! Cool video sir!
its incredible how loose you pencils are, i cant ink black areas without penciling where i want the shadows (very tight, very controlled) but you just jump in and it jus blows me away, your incredible, do you have any work i can pic up from a book store that you would suggest i should check out?
I ask because soon as a professional cartoonist I also hope to launch my own "making comics" videos. And I notice that for the last few years this has been pretty much the only videos of this kind on UA-cam. At least the only kind with a focus on professionals.
Way cool! I'm looking to start a new hobby and I've always wanted to get into comic book making! Any suggestions on videos I should watch to get a good starting point on making these?? :)
you don't have to agree with someone's religious/political beliefs to enjoy their work. i'm religious but there are atheist artists that i love and don't feel guilty about whatsoever.

What controversy?
Exactly, what I was thinking? Because he writes for Breitbart? Big deal.
Angryathiest50 Basically he bashed on homsexuals due to his conservative christian beliefs
@@Angryathiest50 he's a far-right lunatic

Turlock for life! I hope to meet Doug Tennaple someday.

Awesome! Helped me a bunch! Thanks! more power to traditional comics!
That’s awesome work and your style, Doug

Doug Tennapel has some major talent. The Neverhood is a direct result of his genius.

How do you get page rates for your comic book pages before getting it published?...
@1212EricB Do you add color to your graphic novels?
Are you on another outlet. It looks like UA-cam kicked you off.

you don't have to agree with someone's religious/political beliefs to enjoy their work. i'm religious but there are atheist artists that i love and don't feel guilty about whatsoever.

Getting rid of excess ink on silhouette panels? I do that too!! :D
Once Doug was comic artist, suddenly, 2 months ago he became a popular Donald Trump apostle! Nice career.
Trump is still 100x better than Biden
how inspiring. one graphic novel per year. thats a good life.
You're not wasting electricity, but you're wasting so much water just to clean a tiny brush. Jebus!
