brutal legend is probably the most underrated game I've ever played
Agreed
+Timmo yep, alot of games on this list really deserved more ..
+Timmo it is, loved that game
+Timmo Totally. Gameplay is good, story is funny, and that freakin soundtrack!
+Denomic creamer that was a fucking awesome game \M/
tim schafer is the master of good games that flop
+Tchitchouan Inouane & a making a down right Ass of himself
JayDee284
lol so true
Tchitchouan Inouane
Well history is filled with artist whose art was better then they where did u know John Lennon was a wife beater :P
JayDee284
yup the world is filled with underappreciated artists and really ?? john used to beat his wife
Tchitchouan Inouane
Yeah I was shocked when I found too but it had more to with his Drug problems but still
2:00 I loved Brutal legend best $5 I ever spent on a pre-owned game.
Indeed
I agree also. Psychonauts is an incredible game was well. Pretty much anything Tim gets involved with is probably going to be good and a failure
I don't know how brutal legend flopped it was one of the best games in recent memory and had a great soundtrack.
+Jack Marsh I loved Brutal Legend. The story could have been more fleshed out, the controls could have been more responsive and the stage battles could have flowed better but the story suitably epic, the setting was awesome and the soundtrack is the best in the history of gaming.
For other games with awesome soundtracks and metal inspired themes check out the Guilty Gear games.
+Jack Marsh Excellent game, but the RTS portion left something to be desired. Almost all of the later battles came down to upgrading troops, build large army, then swarm the other stage.
What about Destiny?
+Adan Rayner It did not bombed. It was a major success.
+GamingBolt If 325million out of 500million is a success...also they changed the leveling system cause it was a glaring fail. Destiny belongs on this list. Maybe you don't belong on UA-cam.
+Cali Nuts maybe you don't either the game was a major success in first launch sales and pre-orders if this was a list about the most amount of money to fix a game maybe it would be here
just because someone dosent add a game thats bad dosent mean they shouldent be on youtune
+GamingBolt A major success you said? Just in term of sells yes we can say that was a success but when a game cost half a billion dollars gamers expect the game to have some contents at launch. Instead the dev decided to split the game into pieces they called DLCs, changed the base story completely, cut crutial content and it took them a lot of money and efforts to make it an acceptable game. Yes graphically it a really beautyful game but it was an empty shell at launch and that's why it should had been on the list. Even today as we speek Destiny still hasn't made any profit. No wonder the dev are counting on the microtransactions to cover their losses.
Destiny is a respectable game now but at launch it was a mess and as i said earlier it was an empty shell. What is not acceptable however is the dev charging extra money for the DLCs while that content was supposed to be in the original release. They decided at the last minute to split the game and remove content.
Personally I loved Brütal Legend. Great sense of humor, good voice acting by Jack Black, guest appearances from Ozzy Osbourne and a great heavy metal soundtrack. I highly recommend it to anyone who's into...video games.
...and heavy metal!
+Jimmy Darmody I would not recommend it to any one looking for fun.
i would recommend it too it was awesome
Fucking Brutal Legend wasn't anything like a Guitar Hero game, save for some metal music.
Also, its Id Software not "I.D." I swear you didn't even play half of these.
I remember wasting £40 on Defiance, it was like the shit version of destiny, if that's even possible
I'd rather play defiance than destiny. Destiny was awful in my experience. And saying that Defiance is better than something is not very easy for me to say.
i dont know whats all the hate of destiny did u people even play it its a realy good game to my experience on the ps4
+Mahdi Adib Destiny was a fuck up really... The DLC is horrible and if you don't cough up the money to pay for them there's nothing to do at all...
Wasn't Defiance offered up for free on Xbox Live Gold?
+BlackKatDemon its 2$ fr a disc or ftp digital now
Poor Tim Schafer. Master of cult classics
+Kolburta and of shitty savegame mechanics.
I really like Brutal Legend, too bad it wasn't a hit because I really think that it deserved it :/
same
I will forever yearn for a sequel lol
Í FUCKING love it so much
Its a cult classic that deserves a fucking sequel.
Loved playing the Tainted Coil in multiplayer and the game turned me on to other awesome bands
Brutal Legend was an amazing game. I'm still hoping for the day a sequel comes. If psychonauts is getting one, anything's possible.
+Kahlil Collazo No, if Shenmue 3 is being made then anything is possible! That game is the epitome of an expensive doomed series coming back from the dead that didn't sell well. Honestly it was no fault of it's own, Dreamcast was doing poorly, so people needed to buy at least 2 copies for them to break even. Hell, even with Shenmue 2 going directly to Xbox with nobody having played the first one they didn't have a connection to the series enough for it to be successful on that system.
Shenmue didn't bomb. It WAS THE BOMB.
Wow, the most expensive great games such as Shenmue, Brutal Legend, and Psychonauts, I cannot believe that they have bombed just because they didn't sold very well! I wish games like Shenmue, Brutal Legend, Psychonauts, Okami, MadWorld, and Beyond Good & Evil to name a few sold very well, that way they could have gotten sequels.
***** Oh yeah I noticed! Plus, I know that Shenmue is getting the third one and Beyond Good & Evil is getting the sequel.
+MVA Agent This makes me happy
Psychonauts 2 confirmed boiiiii
yahir Lopez Yup, I do noticed! :)
+SuperSonicKazooie Anarchy Reigns is sorta tied to MadWorld in an odd way but it isn't a sequel but sort of the same world. Okami got Okamiden. And as you know Beyond Good & Evil have a sequel and will be Nintendo exclusive. And Psychonauts has a sequel in production as much as I don't care for Tim and didn't fund it I'm hoping that he doesn't screw this up because a lot of people are backing it and trust him to do right by it.
Just about everything listed has a second part to it in some way with the exception of Brutal Legend.
I can DEFINITELY believe Daikatana bombed.
i won't lie brutal legend was defiantly one of the best games i played when it came out i bought it at least 3 times and would defiantly love a sequel on next gen
Psychonauts really? That game was brilliant.
I cant believe you called brutal legend a RTS mixed with guitar hero. WTF? no it was just a good old hack and slash action game.
+skyler brown It had some RTS moments when you had the big concert battles. But I'd say overall it was more open world RPG
Brütal Legend was amazing! I completed it 3 times because it was so different from other games and a lot of fun.
+Hermann Schmitt at least its funnier then overlord
Yup, the amount of times I played it I cant remember however I sometimes jump back on for the AI stage fights :D
Darksiders is sooo damn underrated
I really don´t know how Tim Scchafer´s game could flop. They were fantastic back in the day, and they hold up so incredibly well even today.
Psychonauts! Trippy as hell and a real classic. Love the humour.
Tim Schafer is the master of making games that no one plays.
brutal legend was great.its not everyday that US metalheads get some attention in gaming
+João Vicente i swear if they dont ever revive it i will be an angry old man
brutal legend was a great game idk why it bombed so bad a hidden gem really
Just didn't look good.
So much Tim Shafer here. I'ts funny how his name is well-known in the industry, his games are considered masterpieces, and yet, flop after flop.
ET games being found in the landfill was actually a large reseller going bankrupt and dumping their stock in the landfill. There's a documentary on it showing on Netflix (Atari: Game Over). Also the many different things brought the video game crash including new games being pushed out on a near weekly basis along with a saturated market.
I saw Brutal Legend. I fuggin' love Brutal Legend.
just a note: APB is still online at this moment under the name APB:R (all points bulletin: reloaded), run by gamersfirst. It's free 2 play even and not that bad.
If you can get passed the pay2win mentality of the developers that is. It's worth checking out imo.
I played , loved and have platinum on Darksiders II. The game was so good. Too bad they had hit bankruptcy and sell their company.
+Abyss Conquerer Good news, Nordic owns them and there is potential for a sequel.
+warlockguy42 yep. There's that and they made a remaster for next gen to probably fund them for a sequel
+warlockguy42 Yeah, it's been a few years but from what I remember reading, they were in the hunt for a developer for Darksiders 3.
Dragunslayer83 I thought they got devs from the old team.
warlockguy42 From what I know, they were approaching the old devs about it, but they also had other dev teams approaching them about doing it as well.
Grim Fandango is a fantastic game, holds up today even with the old fashioned graphics, and better than many of the old 'classic' Lucasarts titles.
as I hear it, Shenmue actually had a significantly lower budget than that. Sega merely "fudged the numbers a bit" on it to make it sound more grand than it was. Though there was still a considerable amount of money on it.
Brutal legends and darksiders 2 are good games
Grim Fandango, Psychonauts, and Brutal Legend especially were and still are better/good games regardless of their sales.
I am so obscenely angry that Too Human didn't get its full trilogy. It's definitely one of my favorite games of all time.
Too Human had a lot of potential. I hated it less for how bad the gameplay way, and more for the fact that they blew such cool ideas.
In my opinion Brutal Legend was an awesome game I had fun exploring and playing trough it and it wasn't that easy of a platinum trophy to get either
Advertising is the problem i haven't heard of most of these games. With budgets that big, people need to see advertising.
+Krevin Grard Brutal Legend, Darksiders II, Duke Nukem Forever and Too Human got an extreme amount of advertising.
Some of them had commercials on TV , ads in websites and magazines , etc. Marketing won't save everything
The problem with defiance was more due to Trion adding more than players wanted, and not fixing major issues with the content already existing. I played it a lot, but with every new addition, the bugs and connectivity issues just got worse and worse
i remember jack black was walking around as the main character for brutal legend
Psychonauts, Darksiders, and Shenmue are some of my favorite games ever. It's a pity Shenmue couldn't have been a PS2 title, it might have stood a chance, the game was ahead of it's time. Be nice if we can get some remasters for when Shenmue 3 drops.
Brutal Legend and Darksiders 2 are two of the best games I've ever played! They're so damn underrated... It disappoints me so much...
Bombed is a bit harsh for The Secret World. Being "not as popular as wow" is pretty much every non-moba online game, and The Secret World just hit its 4th year, so it must be doing something that makes money.
I loved Brutal Legend. It was such a unique video game. BUT IM S T I L L FUCKING STUCK ON THE BOSS BATTLE WITH OPHELIA LIKE THATS THE WORST. THE WORST. THE W O R S T
+Ainslie Hunter The key is to defeat the enemies attacking your stage, build a strong army that you hold at the bridge, and then build the ultimate troop (I believe it is called rock smasher). You can hop aboard it decimate the enemy forces on the bridge. Then, you need to use the rock smasher's special to destroy the two towers preventing the path going forward. It's a slow, painful battle, but easy once you figure this out.
+noisetank15 I COULD DO ALL OF IT EXCEPT AFTER I DESTROYED THE BRIDGE. AFTERWARDS IT WENT DOWNHILL AND IT WAS SO STRESSFUL (I'm not yelling at I'm yelling at game)
+Ainslie Hunter I recall it taking a few tries for me. The battle was anticlimatic, but HOLD all your troops (except rock smasher) on your side of the bridge. Keep using the special to clear the troops until they are gone or the rock smasher is destroyed. Use "bringin' down the house" song if you found it. Then rush Ophelia's stage.
+noisetank15 Okay, thanks!
I feel like this video is geared at digging into Tim Schafer and his underrated brilliance.
Didn't Destiny bomb or something? I knew it was bad, but expensive to make?
Destiny's budget is 500 million dollars but over time it made over 2 billion dollars
so it didn't flop but on the contrary it was very successful
Tchitchouan Inouane I kind of wished it floped. So many were disappointed
Simon The Digger
me too man the game sucks
+Simon The Digger many were angry/disappointed but a lot of people love that game so its not like that game was a total mess
+Simon The Digger no, they sold millions of copies on Bungie's name alone
Psychonaughts is still one of my favorite games. It's very fun and absolutely hilarious.
There was recently a documentary about how it wasn't just E.T. buried in the land fill. Many stores were getting over stock of all games due to the overall poor sales of video games at the time. It wasn't just E.T. that nearly destroyed the gaming industry either, it was a bunch of other games with, honestly, worse gameplay and programming. The guy who made it made the game in 6 weeks with old technology, its like being asked to make a 16 bit rpg in 6 weeks now a days. You could do it but it would be shit.
THANK YOU
Snolferd I know, people don't understand how hard it is to actually make a game, which is why you don't see actual game developers picking on ET. I've tried to make a game and I can't even think about how much harder it would have had to have been when they had much less user friendly programs. Let's just say there's a reason I'm going to school for it.
And there are definitely worse games. Download a rom of it and play it for yourself. It's bad, but it's good for a game that was made in 6 weeks with a very limited engine to work on (it wasn't high end, even at the time)
Those were actually games that originated from a cartridge manufacturing plant in El Paso, TX.... Just an hour outside of Alamogordo, NM - where the cartridges were buried. When the crash occurred, many factories closed up shop... And thus, these surplus games were buried as a result. The myth of the game being "SO BAD THEY HAD TO BURY THEM!" is just that, a myth. Atari had cut jobs in the thousands and manufacturing plants were forced to either shut down or re-organize their development strategy.
ET is on every negative game list, poor little dude can't catch a break
Breaks my heart to see Darksiders 2 it was a good game so underrated
I love the concept of Brutal Legend as it's an adventure game based around how awesome heavy metal is but it had an open world with hardly anything to do in it and the weird RTS stages didn't do anything for me at all.
If it had been a Devil May Cry style hack n slash adventure game it would've been so much better.
It wasn't just E.T. cartridges that were found. 2600 consoles and copies of Pac-Man were found as well.
Defiance was never meant to be free to play. It was to be a one off payment game, I bought it and never got any form of refund when they made it free to play
Tim schaffer's name being involved in so many of these can't be a coincidence...
Shenmue, Psychonauts, and grim fandango are terribly underrated. All 3 are amazing.
You watch Funhaus? 😂
+Noah Spierings Nope.
+Noah Spierings Who's funhaus?
+Gaming4Dayz It's a group of youtubers, and they talk about all three of those, especially Shenmue and Psychonauts.
+Noah Spierings k, thanks
good news is grim fandango is suppose be getting a remastered version i think on psn. psychonauts and shenmue are getting sequels...thank you crowd funding.
What does it take to not be a bombing failure?
For example, if Darksiders 2 sold approximately 1.5 million copies at launch, even at just $40 dollars each (thought it was 50-60) doesn't that still give them a $10 million profit, not counting sales that aren't considered launch sales?
I kind of enjoyed the original APB and the customisation in it. It's kinda sad to see it turn into a p2w money laundry...
For me, the biggest loss from my pocket was purchasing 'The Crew' on PS4, it hasn't been played once since the first go.
For games that flopped a good number of these are actually pretty good
Damnit, how is Tim Schafer still underrated? He's awesome!
+Steve Stevenson Well it depends on who you are. But overall he's a bit poor with managing money and meeting deadlines. Reading some of the stuff that happened with BL and what happened with a previous crowdfunding project gives the impression that he comes up with a lot of ideas or do too much to the point time and money runs out.
Shenmue's $70 million budget was NOT for the one game. Yu Suzuki directly confirmed that the $70 million included the budget for Shenmue 2. Shenmue 1's budget by itself was in the $40 million range.
Gaming journalists just endlessly parrot incorrect info about Shenmue. They did it back then, and they're doing it worse than ever when it comes to Shenmue 3.
Dude. Grim Fandango and Psychonauts was the shiznit!!!
Wanna point out, Defiance was NOT la free to play game. It was a $60 purchase. It simply went free to play after it failed horribly, using microtransactions to try and survive.
+x\ Dokuujin /x Free to play in that it was an MMO that didn't require a subscription.
Brutal Legend was a pretty great game, I think poor advertisement was its biggest problem.
I loved Brutal Legend! I loved the game, graphics, music, and humour. They even had Ozzy and Lemmy in it which was awesome. This game gets so overlooked it's sad.
+BlackKatDemon Yeah, that sucks, but maybe there will be a sequel if everyone asked Double Fine for a sequel, but TBH when I first saw this game on the shelves I thought it was a casual guitar hero (ish) game so I didn't really bother looking at it, but a friend of mine showed gameplay and I thought it was cool, too bad many people probably thought the same thing.
I should dust off the ps2 and re play it. I didn't explore the world alot. Still haven't found everything yet.
BlackKatDemon It was on PS2? wow learn something every day.
Sorry. meant 360. I was thinking PS2/PS1 cause a buddy is messaging me about final fantasy 7. Bad thing is he's asking me which heroes I used, and my set up. I haven't played it in over 5 years.
BlackKatDemon lol, it happens.
Wanna know what really pisses me off? One of my favourite games Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain cost 120-150m and only sold 2-3m copies :'(
max payne 3 is the eleventh most expensive video game of all time and sold 500k copies in its first month
Brütal Legend is a great game, but missadverised. Ialways thought that it was a hack and slash, but is a rts...
Brutal Legend being described as an RTS/Guitar Hero hybrid is just fucking laughable, there was so much to that game and the "Guitar Hero" similarities are almost non existant.
Grim Fandango and Psychonauts are really good games actually
I worked at Funcom (The Secret World) as a programmer and it was a rough time. Funcom was an indie company published by EA... I heard from some highup that EA fucked us up because they were releasing an MMO of their own as well (star wars)....
Tim Schaefer seems to pump out the interesting but unpopular games, doesn't he.
After playing Brutal Legend, twice, once on the hardest difficulty...
How did this game fail? It's so damn fun.
i liked the secret world and defiance . both games are fun to play.
Agreed.
Eh....the zombies ruined The Secret World for me, the trailer made it look more interesting and fun than it actually turned out to be, and I hate zombies, rather minor demons over freaking zombies.
Faylinn MystiqueRose zombies was first area mainly
plumpkitters There were zombies all over the second area too, and they were far more annoying than the ones in the first area, it's a big reason I stopped playing.
APB is love and life still to this day as APB: Reloaded :)
Brutal legend is so good, grim Fandango too, never played psychonaughts but gosh dang if i wanna
brutal legend is one of my favorite games of all time
Kingdoms of Amalur should have been on this list, given that it had to be bought out by the state it was developed in.
It's a shame because some of these games (namely Grim Fandango, Psychonauts) are fantastic
Awesome vid.
I think subscription based games should have been in a seperate category as the subscription costs can soon override production costs. Also speaking of MMO's what about WIldstar and The Old Republic? I also think that E.T. has been overexhagerated in it's failure, yes it was bad but compared to some modern day failures it almost isn't worth mentioning.
This Is Vegas didn't even release, so it shouldn't be on this list. A game has to release to be considered a flop.
Psychonauts 2 soon!! YES!!!
its a shame brutal legend didnt take off. i absolutely loved it
many games of this list are actually pretty good Grim Fandango, Psychonauts, Shemue, Brutal Legend it is hard to understand why they did not sell well at least they became cult classics and many people play them today
ET? I can't believe that bombed!
defiance and brutal legends are two good games i have played. both on PC. Defiance did have a bad storymode. but the raids and invasions were downright awesome. fighting so many enemies with a crapload of players was fun. brutal legends had its glitches on PC where the solo selection screen would malfunction by going haywire whilst selecting one, making it hard to pick a certain solo. for the rest it was enjoyable.
First 10 are cult classics and very popular among real gamers. I don't see how they flopped when everyone in my city was playing them.
seriously brutal legend, dark siders AND psychonaughts are on THIS LIST??? those games were great! I demand a re count
He never said they were bad, just they couldn't sell.
Except for E.T.
+AWildAdventurerAppeared UA-cam vids and such fair enough but still they sold well eventually right?
Wait, wait, wait. URU cost 12 million? I know the open source bit didn't happen until a while after it released but holy crap... that's a really really big budget for something that... yeah. 3d art is where it's at. Well, it's where it used to be at least.
Also I'm still surprised Brutal Legend failed, considering I bought it twice, once on release, and one again when I decided to grow up and play video games on the PC.
Man, I remember when The Secret World was announced and launched. It was pretty damn terrible.
I simmed to the point where James Harden retired from coaching.
Some of these games I never even heard of, maybe they didn't put enough into marketing
ok seriously how did darksiders 2 not turn a profit. if the game cost 50 million to make, and they sold 1.5 million copys. it's basic math man.they made over 100,000 dollars. now i am sure people say by turning a profit they meant 400 million. but that is just crazy.
+demonpride1975 Assuming every copy cost $60, that puts the sum at $90 million, or $40 million above cost to make/promote it. That assumes the $50 million in cost covers everything, including promotion and production of the game copies. You also have to subtract something for the retailers, as well as taxes.
Secret World did better after changing its model to pay to play rather than subscription. Probably would have been better if they did it at launch.
Money is not a substitute for good, simple gameplay.
brutal legend Great gamę.
polak autokorekta
well i was typing from phone, so yeah...
znam ten ból wyłącz sobie w ustawieniach
Darksiders 3.
Originally the 4 horsemen are War, Pestilence, Death and something else that isn't fury, but the main character would have become known as Fury because who wants to play a game about poisoning people rather than going through a rage.
I'm questioning if they should make a 3rd. I sat through a walkthrough of Dark Siders 2, and it was too, not dark.
I remember defiance. it was so hyped then wverybody forgot about it within 3 weeks
Psychonauts is fantastic. I love it so much.
+ChiefR96 agree i loved it to. very unique characters and levels.
There was a reason 3D Realms never released Duke Nukem Forever. It wasn't good. That is the reason it was in development hell for so damn long. They didn't want to release a shitty game. So, is it a fucking surprise that it was critically panned when it finally got released under another developer?
