- Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band formed in The Hague in 1967. They had a number of psychedelic rock hits throughout the counterculture movement during the 1960s and early 1970s, including "Send Me a Postcard", "Love Buzz", and "Venus," the last of which became their biggest hit and reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and many other countries during 1969 and 1970. The band sold 13.5 million records by 1973 but disbanded in 1974. The Shocking Blue were founded in 1967 by The Motions guitarist Robbie van Leeuwen. Other members of the group at this time were Fred de Wilde, Klaasje van der Wal (1 February 1949 - 12 February 2018) and Cor van der Beek (9 June 1949 - 2 April 1998). They had a minor hit in 1968 with "Lucy Brown is Back in Town". De Wilde left in 1968 after joining the Dutch army, and van Leeuwen was introduced to Mariska Veres, singing at that time with a club band. He persuaded her to take over the vocals, and the group recorded a worldwide hit with the song "Venus" which peaked at number three in the Netherlands in autumn 1969. The song was released in the United States and the United Kingdom at the end of the year and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1970. It subsequently sold 350,000 copies in Germany and topped the U.S. chart for three weeks, the first song from the Netherlands to do so. It sold over one million copies there by January 1970 and received a gold record awarded by the Recording Industry Association of America. Global sales exceeded five million copiesMaria Elisabeth Ender, better known as Mariska Veres (1 October 1947 - 2 December 2006), was a Dutch singer who was best known as the lead singer of the rock group Shocking Blue. Described as being similar to a young Cher, she was known for her sultry voice, eccentric performances, and her striking appearance which featured kohl-rimmed eyes, high cheekbones, and long jet black hair, which was actually a wig. The group had many other hits before they split up in 1975. In 1979 a reunion attempt was made, but it lasted only two years. Shocking Blue was resurrected in a new line-up in 1993 with Mariska Veres, but without Robbie van Leeuwen. This formation continued until the death of Mariska Veres in December 2006. This performance was part of the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the AVRO in a Toppop tv special presented by Ad Visser in 1998.

I first heard this song back in 1970 .The 70 s 60 s 80 s were the best years for music and was 14 when this song came out
I wonder if the people dancing knew just how fortunate they were to be there. What I'd give to have seen Mariska & the boys in person. Thanks to this channel, at least we have the videos.
I met her once in the artist room during a performance in the netherlands. I happened to be there because a friend of mine also had to perform there, she was very cordial and approachable.
