I bought a light coloured sofa for a formal living room. Never again. I'm too scared to use the sofa in case in gets stained. We end up spending all our time on the big, squishy, navy blue family room sofa with washable cushions. I might go for a nice two tone look for the light coloured sofa now.
Good advice. My favorite sofa colors are Brown, Gray or Green. I like Black sofas as well, but it's just very hard to design the room around :) Green is of course a bit more bold as well. Personally im not a fan of white sofas. Maybe that's more of an american thing.
I went with a well saturated taupe coloured sofa that has removable cushion covers. Hides everything and the microfibre material cleans well. I had a patterned sofa before with greyed out but dark to medium tone colours and it was fabulous - it hid everything and the canvas wore extremely well. I would still have that but it was too large for the home I moved into.
Yes, futons are out of fashion, but I love my oak craftsman's style futon in my living room. I have two covers for it, one solid light colored and one a dark pattern. I live in Michigan and the dark one is cozier in winter. The light one is summery. Both go well with the painting above the futon. The covers can can be washed in the machine and line dried. And, of course, guests can sleep on it when needed.
WOW! I had not seen this video! You guys answered MY question. Thank you VERY much for the advise. I am sorry I cannot post a photograph of my final decision. I bought a not so dark sofa, it's kinda between grey and mocha, but the cushions have a fine color mix, but they are overall light; which is a very good combination, similar to your final suggestion on the video; which I think it might be a bit unusual, but it does work!!! I appreciate the time you spent to answer my question, and congratulations on your youtube channel. You guys are doing an amazing job! XXXOOO

Great information! Terrible photo used to show a custom two tone idea. It was a white chair that looked like someone just grabbed a cushion from a dark piece of furniture. Come on! You can do better than that.

what if the sofa is in a room not well lit?

Hey! I have a question. I'm living in a dorm room, with all white walls AND furniture. How could I bring colour into this without drastic changes like painting?
Vanya Boon Use colorful textiles/fabrics, art and knicknacks. As a renter my apartments always had white walls but my place was always very colorful because I invested in colorful rugs, drapes, pillows, art and other accessories.
Colored throw pillows, wall decals, removable wallpaper, art!
