    Phil
    Much love for the shout-out for Jack and me over at Blues Lawyer Confessional.
    We've both been watching KYG for years and love not just what you do and the knowledge you impart, but also the community that you foster.
    One correction: I'm the lawyer, he's the guy with the band experience. I've used been noodling on my own for years.
    Again, your shout out is wonderful and an honor. Now it's on us two to step up our game and keep pushing out content.
    Love to you all and try to stay frosty in Phoenix.

    I bought a Victory Amp and my choice was heavily influenced by comments made on a YT channel I trusted (I think now that maybe I was maybe a bit dumb to do so). There should have been full open disclosure in my view. I agree with the findings of the Advertising Standards Authority in the UK.

      There used to be a time in the UK, where a printer had to disclose that they were the printer of record for a book or document, as well as a comma who was the writer of the printed document. Failure to do so good result in jail time. This transparency is especially relevant in an era of artificial intelligence and, the reality that it may be impossible or extremely different cold to know whether what you were looking at is real and who created it.

      Who owns the factory that sold it has no effect on the product. It is either good or not by the quality of design, materials and construction. Anytime someone owns the business that sells a product, anyone knows that the salesman is for profit. That is no secret. If a bloke works for free, how can he pay the taxes and make a living?

    • @BlazertronGames
      @BlazertronGames 7 місяців тому

      It should have been disclosed, but it's obvious why he kept it quiet. He had full confidence in victory, and probably didn't want them to be seen like harley benton is to thomann. He didn't want it to look like a stores cheap in-house brand. And of course, anyone associated with a company is going to be biased towards that company, even subconsciously. Even if Lee wasn't a co-owner of victory, he's friends with the amp designer, so would probably be biased either way. And that goes for anyone even slightly associated with any company. Doesn't mean they're bullshitting you, though, but there's a bias.

    I think KDH was correct to raise the issue. I think Lee's response was so good that KDH came cross to me as a little unsatisfied because he couldn't get a better gotcha moment. Agree a net positive in the end.

      @poorbrokeguitarist 9 місяців тому +1

      I agree. KDH is a negatron which is why I stopped watching him. He pushes negativity hard. He is always looking for a way to "get" someone and he is quite smug about it IMO.

    • @1mihayes
      @1mihayes 9 місяців тому

      I agree, I really appreciated Anderson’s response even tho he was “caught.” But he did respond without losing his head. Channels like KDH do bother me as well. I understand the need for them. However, to me there’s always an issue when you’re making money, or in some way benefitting from, exposing the faults of others. It turns into a hypocritical cycle that spirals in on itself and changes the character of the person doing it IMHO. KDH should watch out for his own character. You can easily become the very thing you hate.

      Also, victory amps are amazing, and their customer service is even better.
      Real Story: I have a kraken preamp pedal where it was malfunctioning last year around Christmas. I emailed them my serial and told them what was going on. They asked if I could reseat the tubes and rest again, didn’t work, then they said “okay, let’s get some troubleshooting going. We’re going to send you a full set of tubes. When you get them, change them all out.” I did that and it fixed the issue. They never made me return the old ones, and I thanked them for sending them to me in the states.
      Their 5 warranty AND 2 year tube warranty is flat out incredible and they’ve been a peach to deal with so much so that I email them directly for random questions all the time, and they ALWAYS answer them.
      I could care less if lee anderton is a co owner. Other people in their space know this and it’s not a big deal at all. They aren’t twisting my arm to buy them; I don’t live in the UK, so I don’t shop at Andertons.

    The Lee-Victory… thing was handled pretty well by everyone involved. It is something that should be disclosed and it wasn’t but Lee addressed this about as well as anyone should expect

    • @Birkguitars
      @Birkguitars 9 місяців тому +6

      Agreed. I think it was done with honesty and respect on each side. The law in the UK is that anyone in Lee Anderton's position MUST disclose any personal interest in a product being mentioned. Lee explained why initially a decision was made to be low profile on the involvement in Victory and I get why there were worries about the information being publicly available but ultimately he had to change his approach. As he mentioned in his response video the Advertising Standards Agency got in touch and that shows that KDH was absolutely right to raise the issue. But Lee did not counter attack. He acknowledged the point and addressed it. To me it was an exemplary piece of work all round to identify a problem and solve it. If only more people in the industry, perhaps even some close to Andertons, did the same....

    From Leo: I have several EQ pedals, and the cheap little EQ from Danelectro is my favorite, Very low background noise, great range, and has a useable gain control. Plus it costs about 1/4th as much as the others that I don't use.

    I will say that in my current financial situation, I can't justify doling out the cash to buy a new guitar or swap pickups, but experimenting with picks and strings has indeed scratched that itch. The shops here in Japan dont necessarily have the same stuff or things I'm used to for the same price and it has thus forced me to try new gear which has been fun.

    I like KDH (fellow Dub) and the niche he is trying to build for himself. He was not wrong to bring up this topic as it was clear that Lee, Rob, Rabea etc., were neck deep in that company as Victory Amps dominated the Andertons channel overnight. Lee’s response was outstanding and sadly, that left KDH with nowhere to go, but he did get his point across and I guess got the win.

    I agree with Phillip on PAF output/style pickups. I also have a soft spot in my heart for the DiMarzio Super Distortion, but besides that pickup, I can't really find much use for high output pickups since so many amps have all the gain most players will ever need. I like vintage to medium output pickups. I love the DiMarzio PAF Pro and their 36th Anniversary pups. I also dig Duncan's Pearly Gates and Saturday Night Special and Custom. Besides that, I can't really work with higher output pups. I need clarity and I like a bit of that PAF smokiness. You push a good PAF with a high gain amp and you get a great sound with a lot of clarity, and clarity comes before distortion in my book. I expect PAF style pickups to continue to grow in popularity.

    Great EQ pedals are Source Audio, MXR an Boss, for both bass and guitar.
    For fighting the noise issue: learn about graphic eq, because it’s very much/ the very same as using overdrive and distortion: boosting them will also boosting unwanted noice.
    So, it’s very simple: try to cut certain frequencies instead of boosting others.
    This works!
    EQ-pedals (graphic) are the best, for both bass and guitar!
    Once you know a lot more about eq, you can also use a parametric eq, wich is slightly nicer but harder to use.

    KDH merely pointed out that Lee Anderton was breaking the law with regards to advertising standards. Same as when UA-camrs don't let people know they are being paid to carry out a review. Lee accepted his failure and realised that he must now inform his viewers when he has a personal financial interest in an item he is pushing......like he didn't know he was breaking the advertising standards already...hmmm

  • @DanielBobke
    @DanielBobke 9 місяців тому +3

    While KDH certainly likes to stir the pot, I agree with him that if you are going to shill a product on your UA-cam channel for your store that sells the product, it is important that you make EXPLICITLY clear when you have an ownership interest in the product. We all have biases, and clearly if you have an ownership interest in a product you are biased towards selling more of that product. The consumer needs to know that in order to make a fully informed decision. In addition, the UK has a specific law about this subject and that agency found that Lee Anderton did violate the law and needed to be more explicit about his ownership interest in Victory. It was a good outcome all around - Lee got a hand-slap and will now be more transparent and other UA-camrs are on notice to make sure they be transparent.

    Chicken Picks
    Gravity Picks, but they click and

    The Taylor Jazz size Thermex Pro picks
    My absolute favorite Plectrums are the Blue Chip XL Jazz 50 & the Blue Chip TP 60 😎

    Hey Phil, I just woke up in the middle of the night (it's 3:15 here in Germany now) and at least I have your podcast to keep me entertained now.
    I got a question. I'm only working on my own guitars most of the time, I have to cut nuts like twice a year and always found some workaround. But finally I want to get a set of nut files. Ibanez, Hosco or Music Nomad are in the pool to pick from, Stew Mac is out because they ship from the US and I'm too lazy to deal with customs.
    Would you rather get a set of 9-42 and work a bit to get 10-46 if needed (I use 10-46 more often, but need 9-42 every now and then), get a set of 10-46 and use them for 9-42 as well or get all (which I find quite a lot of money for how rarely I need them) or do you have a better idea?
    Also I think when I get them I might use them more often initially, because every plastic nut in any of my guitars will be replaced...

      He did say that the reason he kept his part ownership (don't remember if he said there were 9 or 11 owners) was because he was worried that if his involvement in the brand was public knowledge that other retailers wouldn't stock the brand. So it's understandable that he would want as many places selling the product as possible based on it's merits rather than who happens to own it. Also imo it's a little unfair that the other part owners of the brand get penalized by reduced sales just because Lee happens to one of them.

    I absolutely love 7 gauge strings on strat style guitars. They seem to work better on 25.5 than they do on the shorter scale. I think they are a blast to play.... It's all about the attack. Take it easy on your pick attack, and you may find them way better to play. They really aren't good for fast metal or 80's metal, but for everything else sevens are great.

    Anyway, I kept it because I wanted a 7,25 inch radius like on my 1975 jazz bass.
    I guess it would have been better to wait, spare some money and get a « real » vintera…

    It's very weird that Lee was trying to make it seem like he was not involved with Victory. Makes me trust reviewers less overall. Glad he did the right thing in the end but this was a black mark that I'm not forgetting anytime soon.

      He is not a reviewer, nor he has ever claimed he is? A store cant do reviews as there is always bias, because they are trying to sell you the products.. they are demoing the stuff, which is different than reviewing the stuff.

      @@HellcatCustoms Yes there are Victory amps in the background, but so are other brands like marshalls, friedmans, fenders etc. Yes Victory DP40 is frequent visitor on the videos, but the reason is that Danish Pete is playing and it is his signature amplifier. Makes sense that he prefers to use his signature amp when testing other gear, right?

    I don’t think having a string directly over a pickup pole matters, because the magnetic field is so wide. Seymour Duncan explains that you can put a standard Gibson-spaced humbucker into any Stratocaster string-spaced guitar.
    Trembucker style are just to help OCD and for looks. I had a Gibson-spaced DiMarzio PAF in my old Japanese Kramer for years. Sounded cool.

    I disagree, but I may change later in life but I honestly doubt it. For me, the looks of the guitar is #1. What I mean is that it doesn't matter to me if an ugly guitar is amazing because I would never try it. So, how it looks determines if I'll try it or not. I mostly fall in love with strats unless it's some weird colour like "fiesta" red... but I enjoy other guitars too.
    1) Looks. If I like the look I'll consider;
    2) Price. If the price is within my range and I want the guitar enough I'll feel out the;
    3) Playability. If it feels nice to play then I'll try;
    4) Intonation and tuning stability. Then finally,;
    5) sound. Sound is usually not important because it's possible to change pickups and so on to get closer to the sound in my head...

      I have a Runt (slightly modded to be more like a Dirty Shirley) and think it does fine (to my ears). It has enough gain for me, but I still can use a boost in front if needed. IMHO, and if I were buying now, I would seriously consider the new Friedman JEL since Ch 1 is like a Plexi. With the Runt & JJ Jr, just not enough control over the clean channel so the JEL is more versatile.

    Regarding Guitar World supposedly not giving product a 1 or 2, I am aware of a number of highly regarded YT channels which state that if the product is a complete disaster their not going to review it. While I can see that logic, I also can see at least reviewing some of those 1 and 2’s, to let people be forewarned to steer clear.

    ??? Phil
    As I become a better player, my preferences develop and it’s now left me with a dilemma.
    I’m the kind of guy that only wants to own one guitar.
    So I have just one guitar that is expensive, making it hard to simply replace.
    I’ve decided that my 42mm nut is just a little too narrow for me. Otherwise the guitar is perfect. I love it - it’s my baby…
    So what should I do? Just continue to get used to a slightly narrow nut or go through the enduring process of finding one guitar, just as perfect as this one, but with a 43mm nut…?
    It’s a daunting dilemma.
    I’m also trying to replace the lil 59 in the neck slot, with a true single coil. So I can have both tones in just one guitar.
    I also want to add dedicated coil splitting. Right now position 2 and 4 only split on coil or the other, while always having the opposite humbucker engaged.
    For reference it’s a ML3 Bea Chapman.
    It was the best guitar in the whole store and it’s been with me ever since…

    Regarding Andertons: This is extremely unfortunate, as I always felt that Lee on his YT channel, was one of the more forthright “tell it like he see’s it” guitar gear channels and I highly respected him for that. He seemingly didn’t sugar coat shortcomings in products or features that were not to his liking.

    Re: Guitar reviews (or any for that matter). Society has moved to an all or nothing rating system. Look how many businesses and restaurants have 5 star reviews. There should be a standard distribution mandate where an individual or review system gets three 5*, 13 4*, 68 3*, 13 2*, and 3 1*. Then there is a true standard distribution of products.

    Heritage guitars are definitely better. I have three Les Pauls and I traded my Custom 24 35th Anniversary for a Custom Core H150 and it’s without a doubt the BEST guitar I’ve ever owned. I literally can go a month without playing it, take it out of the case, and it’s still in tune. Incredible guitar.
