Am 72 , grew up in Sth. Wales with valley coal / passenger trains part of my boyhood. We had 2 pits within spitting distance of our house . My grandad and me used to borrow coal from the NCB at night. Perhaps 1958/1962 . Naughty but nice . Mainline systems were totally remote from my end of the World branch , were men where men and sheep were afraid ! . My Grandfathers forebears were from Radstock so your programe is spot on. Thanks and regards steamnuts . Dave .

I have this video but nothing to play it on so this is great. I grew up in Radstock and remember the line well.

It's good that there's a road near Green Park that's named after Ivo Peters! I remember the '60s (born '61), but don't recall seeing people standing on the railway lines. Do remember seeing a steam train pull into Newbury Station around '67, and my Mum's comment that they were being phased out and that it was a shame. Great video - thanks.

Peter Smith drove 9f 92220 on the last Pines Express. They were best friends for many years until Donald's passing. The most respected engine and driver combination on the S&D in its final years.

Erm ... there was a lot more to the S&D than those two, who I used to see and talk with when they were trapped at the buffers at Bath GP. More than 70 men working from Bath GP, including the real gritty stuff with small hours goods trains and ongoing shunting; another 40+ based at Templecombe, who had whole S&D route knowlege ie to Bath, Bournemouth, and Highbridge. The five Branksome crews incl. D&P had the 'glamour' job ie the Pines to/from Bath.

Beechings remit from Marples was only financial.
There was no consideration for social effects or cost value analysis.
If we still had the great Central then that could have taken freight, with a few new junctions it would have avoided the horrendous costs and environmental impact of HS2.
The S and D would have become a tourist attraction.
