→ Four Buttons: You can button just the top of the working buttons, you can button both or just the bottom, or if you have a square or rectangular button shape.
Traditionally, a double-breasted suit with peak lapels was more formal and all buttons were buttoned at all times. Only when you would sit would you unbutton the bottom one.
→ Six Buttons: Basically two rows of buttons that are parallel with the top pair being spaced further apart. It creates a nice v-shape that accentuates the male attractive silhouette. Traditionally, you’d button both of the bottom buttons for a very classic look.
If you want to sit comfortably, you probably have to undo the bottom button, however, just like with any other double-breasted coat, you never unbutton it completely.

In double breasted you can in some cases, and in even fewer you can only button just the bottom one, but only if the fabric is suitable.

​@@joncook7510you can wear them unbuttoned. It's just that it looks odd. It does makes them less versatile. The main reason you'd want to wear them unbuttoned is to show your waistcoat. However, today it makes no sense to have a waistcoat under a DB jacket as most interiors are heated and you can just wear an overcoat for warmth while outdoors
