The fish time I caught a Longnose gar I had taken your advice on catching catfish with live bream. I caught a four and a half foot gar instead. To say he thrashed and fought is an understatement. Now I'm hooked.
Reminds me of catching Long Nose Gar in the Red River in Texas when I was a kid. We would cut them up and use them for bait on our Flathead trot lines.
I swear watching RGTFM reminds me of the days when Roland Martin and Bill Dance was on every Saturday morning. I used to sit on the couch with my zebco 33 like I was on the boat with them trying to catch a hog of a bass.

Just used your set up today in a local creek hole and caught a 46" longnose today! I only had a 2/0 gama hook. But it flat out nailed him. Thanks for the tips, this was some fun fishing. He tore a hole in my net though. :(
I came across gar fishing accidentally, fishing back waters/stagnet waters back in high school. They’d be sitting on top and they’d strike at your cork/float when you reeled it by them. So I tied on a top water bait and would cast past them and bring it by them. It was a ball! Most of them got off when you got them to the bank. Later, a buddy and I would drift crappie jigs in the back water (in winter) behind a large reservoir for crappie and whites when they were running water through the dam. Besides the many crappie and whites we’d catch a lot of gar. He’d complain about the gar…. “another trash fish” he’d say. My response was “who cares! …We’re catching 2-3ft+ fish on light tackle in the middle of winter”! They were fun to catch and put up a fight….especially since many would be not hooked in the mouth.
