Nice to see the family on Camera! Mountain house is the king of prepping food, if one has the money it's a no brainer!
+Canadian Prepper they really do have a lot of great options. i love the fact that you can toss this in the back of your closet for 30 years and it's there if you need it. really great option.
Mountain house is also sold at wallmart ,and can be bought with food stamps. So can the 6 day pails and emergency ration bars.
Thanks for your time making this video.
+mike conley that's what i've heard. they make a very popular product.
Not at all Wally worlds. Mine doesn't. I could buy online and pick up. Nobody really preps big time around my area. Hate it for them.
melissa comer did you check in the hiking/ camping aisle?
All of them ive been to have at least a small variety with the hiking gear. They are under 5 bucks a package and only one serving but its better than nothing.
mike conley Yep, The wally world here sucks. I'm not a newbie. My third bedroom is my stockroom. Like I said, prepping is not big around here. Too bad for them.
How do i get food stamps?
Another reason to have freeze-dried food, or any type of dried food storage, is it can be stored at freezing temperatures without damage. If you live where there are freezing temperatures during winter and your electrical power goes out and a lot of your food storage is in the form of home-canned or commercially canned wet foods, you will have to find away to keep those foods from freezing or, when the wet food freezes and expands, jar lids will lose their air-tight seal and metal cans will bulge and can lose their air-tight seal. Freezing temperatures will not hurt bags or cans of freeze-dried and dehydrated foods or buckets of dry grains and dried beans. If most of your food storage is dry food, this means if the power goes out in winter, you can focus on keeping your family warm and the plumbing and your stored drinking water from freezing and not have to worry about canned food being damaged.
I like your honesty. You let us know when you're being sponsored and when you're not.
+Paul thanks! I get offers all the time to do product reviews but try and stick with the legit companies and be honest about my take on their products.
yeah that amazing about him
+ T- WORKS thanks, i appreciate the kind words :)
$285 ÷ 14 = $20.35 per day ÷ 3 meals per day = $6.78 per meal
Remember servings are not the same as a meal.
Huh, that was cheaper than what I was expecting. 7 dollars per meal is pretty expensive for everyday use, but for emergency supply it doesn't seem that bad.
Times how many in the family
$6.78 X 2 adults + 1(2 kids under 12)= $20.34 per meal
X 3 = $61.02 per day. $61.02 per day X 14 days = $ 854.28
I do own a bit of MH, but really, give me $800.00 and I'll feed you for longer than 14 days. :)
@@acerrubrum5749 I completely agree but that 30yr shelf life is hard to beat.
@@acerrubrum5749 id prob get their bulk freeze dry meats, then mix w. my own preps and spices
Your kids are soooo adorable!!! Thanks for the video.. I actually buy Numanna because I have lupus and they sell Gluten Free. but i have met a few preppers who buy Mountain House and they LOVE it.... !
+ Terri thanks for the kind words ;) Never heard of Numanna...have to check them out. I really enjoyed the food. I even keep them as backups when I'm too busy to cook.
Hey! I heard about Numanna from a UA-cam Channel I follow.I contacted Mountain House a while back but they don't do GF, which is why I started searching for an alternative. Numman is a family-based business and VERY competitive with their prices AND they have great customer service. I pass their name out all the time..Actually, right now,I think you can get 144 servings for a Family Pack (4 people) for $248.00 and the food is very high quality, in my opinion..I just subscribed to your channel a few days ago..! Informative...! Keep up the good work.. and KEEP PREPPING!
Mountain House has been a mainstay of our family's preps for a few years now. Kid's (in a staying at home, normal day-to-day scenario) don't always give a clear indication of how good things taste. Take them on a long hike together, or a day out exercising and playing physical games... then ask them how they like one specific meal. It makes all the difference. As a retired military guy... the food we got was always great. Why? Because it was food. The reason why Mountain House is a big part of our preps is their processes, the shelf-life, and (considerately) good value. Thanks for the awesome video! Keep up your good work!
+ Alan Williams great point. When you've gotten out and worked hard or gotten active, about anything will taste great.
How about a video on how to prep for our furry friends, food, first aid, harnesses, and so on
+The Way The World Ends yeh, i've got that in my queue to do a video on. they're so important. our dog is a therapy dog for our family.
It's fairly easy to prep for furry family members. Do an online search for "pet first aid kits" and read the contents list. Get those together- most items can be purchased at the dollar stores (most items are the same as humans) and obtain books written for your particular pet's first aid. You can purchase specific items as you can afford. Other than that, food, water, treats, toys and blankets and you are all they really need. Leashes, tie-outs, harnesses (get the animal used to them- my cats are trained to leashes and harnesses), and you're set.
Tina Gallagher I suppose that can be said for any prep, do some research and you'd never have to watch these kind of videos. Simple suggestion for a video to bring to light something some may forget to do
My dog likes mountain house as much as I do. Problem solved.
They are better than the freeze dried stuff from years ago, pretty decent. I keep a few in each bug out bag as well as MREs if I want to eat but cant light a fire. All in all for survival I Keep a decent stash of them in my preps as well as normal canned goods and #10 cans of freeze dried stuff. It has its place thats for sure!
+Iridium242 i have the same setup in my bags: mountain house + MRE's for the same exact reasons. I'm gonna check out out their #10 cans here shortly...thanks for the feedback as always.
This was an awesome and honest review! Thanks for providing a great video for the whole family to watch.
+FullSpectrumSurvival thanks Brad. Congrats on your recent video hitting over 1.5 million. Is that your first viral video?
Yeah. Thankfully the UA-cam Nazi's permanently pulled ads from it. You know, my message was so threatening and all :)
+FullSpectrumSurvival dang man, sorry to hear that. it looks like Patreon is still good to you though, right?
We couldn't be more thankful in that regard. The news is only possible because of that. Kelley and I have really been enjoying your content brother. Keep it rolling!!!!
+FullSpectrumSurvival thanks for the kind words man, really appreciate. wish we weren't all spread so far apart from each other. keep up the great work...really enjoy your videos!
Aww Your kids are so cute!
+Asteria Sheria thanks ;) they were excited to be in the video.
Excellent review! I especially enjoyed all of the data towards the end. It was great having your kids provide unbiased feedback. Biscuits And Gravy for the win!
+TheUrbanPrepper thanks for the kind words and the tip to have my kids review the food. In a disaster I'm sure they'd gobble it down if that's all we had...probably give a higher review then :)
I HATE MOUNTAIN HOUSE,STARTING TO FREEZE DRY MY OWN WITH A WALMART BOUGHT PRESTO DEHYDRATOR...GREAT MACHINE..
My friend Shawn and I shared the expense of a Harvest Right freeze dryer. About 5k brand new.
2 years in, both of our families have a 4 year food supply that does not require power or heat, with a 25 year shelf life. Cost $2-2.37/meal, including electricity and machine maint. Saved us a considerable amount of money, and also allowed us to start helping friends and family get prepped.
Lol nice video with your kids! They were funny 😄
Thanks for sharing this video, definitely learned something.
Great video! I love Mountain House because they give food allergy information on their website. My child has anaphylactic food allergies to nuts, so I have to plan for safe foods in case of emergency. Mountain House's site (as of 2017) says their food is made in a facility that is peanut and tree nut free. Just purchased this kit.
Also, your channel is my favorite prepper channel!
I've had several types of Mountain House freeze dried food and they're generally pretty tasty. Their chicken and dumplings flavour (the actual chicken and dumplings, not biscuits and gravy - though that's also good) is my favourite.
I always keep some of these on hand.
Good stuff! I like the Mountain House over some others because you can prepare it in the bag. Some others you have to pour it into another container of some sort to make it. Great video!
we've tried most of their menu several times. we especially like their breakfast meals. we've experimented with "cook" time and water. we've found that a little less water - sometimes as much as 30% - helps flavor and consistency.
for example - we only use 1 cup of water in the biscuits and gravy, and let it "cook" for 8-9 minutes. our biscuits are always "too the tooth". the sausage flavor in the gravy comes through. yes, almost too much salt.
we like to put the biscuits with a package of scrambled eggs and bacon. only use a 3/4 cup water and cook for 8-9 minutes. we get a fluffy egg, that feels good. the bacon flavor and aroma comes through too.
the chicken teriyaki is sweet. almost too much sweet sauce. again, a little less water than called for and shorter cook time, the rice will still be firm.
Mountain House is probably the most expensive, but the flavors in all their meals is measurably better than the others we tried.
Kids are honest about what they think of food. I don't particularly care for Mountain House myself. Bland. The texture just hits me the wrong way.
+Tina Gallagher yeh, it was really funny to hear their responses :) brutally honest.
I found that their Breakfast Skillet is delicious and also has one of the best calorie-to-weight ratio of the food they offer.
They're great for ultralight camping too.
Great video! Cute family. Thnx.
I've been eating MH since the early 70's,,,its awesome and tastes great...just remember it needs water to prepare...if you are in a short water area you need to adjust your stash to allow for that...
+gandamack yup! we're in a desert area here in So Cal, so we have a lot of backup water.
Very good prepping info. I have been emergency prepping for around eight years, My daughter has a bread making machine and has got pretty good at making bread with it. So I asked her what ingredients she uses to make bread, I have been going to costco getting the 25 lb bags of bread flour and other things she will need to make it. I open the flour and put it in vacuum bags and seal it with my Food Saver then store it in plastic containers.
Some times Sam's Club has specials on their Augason Farms freeze dried food kits that come with around 70 #10 cans of all types of food, I have purchased a few of them over the last eight years and store them away, and these Mountain House single freeze dried food meals are pretty good to. I have a lot of them....
And why on earth do you live in Southern Calif? Same reason I do.....lol
Your kids are cute! Just my wife and I living in Los Angeles South Bay city. I have calculated we have enough food and water, without washing and personal hygiene, for about 90 days. I have a mixture of Mountain House and assorted MRE’s for food. I also have items for personal protection. I would like to store more especially since we will likely have to take in two more family members thus cutting our prep in half. But here’s the rub. If we have a catastrophic power grid failure of 6 months or more I figure we’re dead. Seriously, we can’t prep sufficiently to last 6 months or more and no way we can get out of here (15 million people and 100 miles to get where? Barstow?) So my thought is finding a network of like minded, preferably Christian, urban preppers in our area, say within 5 miles(?) we could get to know and plan for the worst. Any ideas?
I just tried 3 bags of Mountain House I bought in 2014 as part of a 12-packet sample pack - date code on the bags Sep 2019 (today is Aug 2018). While in my store, the bags have been kept in the dark within the range 5 to 23'C. Not ideal.
Spaghetti Bolognese: Upon opening the bag, the foul smell of gone off fat was the main odour. After rehydrating as per instructions, the food was inedible. I did not eat more than a couple of half spoonfuls as the taste of gone off fat (I guess the vegetable or animal fats) was pervasively foul.
Sweet and Sour Chicken: Pretty much the same as above. There was a slight increase in flavour from what the food was supposed to be. Inedible to all but a starving man (expect the runs from the gone off fats/oils).
Scrambled Egg, Ham and Potato: Not such a foul smell upon opening but not appealing. After hydration, largely inedible. Scrambled egg resembled sponge dunked in foulness, ham was kind of a bit like ham but not nice. If the potato cubes had been on their own then I probably could have eaten them without retching.
Next I tried an MRE from a different company (only a couple of years old so half the age of the above): Chilli con carne - in comparison to the above, it was Michelin star rating; delicious. All tastings were done by two people both with the same opinion each time. I will not be buying Mountain House ever again. It is possible that these Mountain House products were not poisonous (and therefore contained calories that the body could have used) but I was not prepared to eat enough to find out. I would have been very surprised if my digestive system would not have suffered in some way. It is also possible that they were actually ok soon after manufacture but they were simply inedible after 4yrs.
I appreciate good food, sure, but I am not fussy. I have eaten 5yr old army ration packs fine that have been subject to annual 50'C temperature cycling.
Ordered a case MREs from Meal Supply Kit last week (before this video and all the craziness in Las Vegas.) Going to add an MRE (along with water) to my get-home-bag.
I typically let Mountain House meals re-hydrate for about 20 minutes, even though their directions say you can eat them sooner. Seems like they absorb more water and are more palatable that way. Nice review! Good to see how your kids feel about the meals. My wife and daughter are also very picky and turn their noses up at anything freeze dried. LOL you guys, the Beef Stroganoff is one of my favorites. :)
The stuff at Walmart is single serve meals and here they are priced at $4.82 each. The selection is not that great as they have the Breakfast Skillet, Chillie Mac, and Beef Stroganoff (SP?). They are handy and decent tasting. I was thinking that they'd be easy to make by just letting a bottle of water heat up in the sun and using that. I like 'em.
I like Mountain House food. I eat it on backpacking trips and some time around the house. Love the breakfast skillets, chicken fajita wraps and chicken alaking.
The 14 day is well over 300.00 now. Wow! I love the tips you provided. Thank you!
I prefer Patriot Supply for their meals over Mountain House, as a #Canadian I'll pass on the biscuits and gravy.
The little kid says " Like Camping????" Meaning, dad we have never gone camping.
Good video, I have tried those 3 along with the Lasagna and Breakfast Skillet while hiking. All were tasty and I'll give them a 8.5
Good informative video. Great idea using your kids for taste testing! Kids will not eat what they don't like. It's a good idea to find out on this side of a crisis so changes can be made!
Same goes for me and husbaband. I would not want to be stuck eating something we don't really like. We make our own.
I like Mountain House. The breakfast items are good & so are the dinner items.
I have had to use more water than instructions & make sure you are careful & use hot water. They are more expensive but not gonna think about that if they are needed.
They taste pretty good & fills a holler spot.
I have not tried the other brand.
I have some Mountain House stored away. I first got into Mountain House about 8-9 years ago. Good video.
I love mountain house. The mac and cheese is excellent. Any more when I want some mac and cheese. I run to our local sport store and get a pack. I even had my family try some also. My cousin who thinks she is the mac and cheese expert got offended cause we did a taste test and mountain house won. great video.
I use these when I go "lazy" backpacking. The chili mac is the best by far.
Great video! Cute family. Thnx.
Great lightweight food. I put it in my Bobb and inch bags.
If you make advertisements call them advertisements!
just a reminder. in a shtf scenario, most people wouldn't give a shit about taste if they had nothing else to eat
Personally i just boil the food with rice in a pot. The rice tends to be undercooked for me.
good info.. I have mountain house products now..
Great work on the taste test. Next time, don't feed the kids for a day and then repeat the test. Just kidding of course.
Mountain house has extremely high sodium content.
THIS IS FANTASTIC for Americans,,,, nobody seems to be giving information for people living outside USA.
IS this because only USA is going to be attacked????
OR is it due to American exceptialism????
Buy food from USA or any other country to bring into Australia seem s to be impossible, either due to our import regulations or the fact that the weight make it fancially impossible????
Thanks for your ideas on this problem :)
Like you Aussies, we have diverse climates in the USA and maybe you've seen reports of a string of natural disasters here lately: Hurricanes, wildfires, freak snow storms, floods. We Yanks like to be self-sufficient just like you, so prepping makes sense. Sounds like you could use some do-it-yourself ideas for food preps [rather than ordering] - like a food hydrator that someone mentioned here 'Harvest Right'? Who knows Janina, you could be a trend setter and produce your own YT prepping videos for down under!
MH makes good food. But the only Downside is the need for CLEAN Hot Water. So I'd make sure that I would have a Safe Way to heat Water AND I have enough of it for the 14 days. But after the Hurricanes this year, if I could be assured of the Water Source, I'd probably have a 30 day Supply set aside. The "OLD" Rule of having enough Preparations for 3 Days seems to be a... "Little Inadequate". There are still Areas of Puerto Rico that have yet to see any Rescue Personnel on the Ground. Sometimes, Events are just Too Big. Take Care.
Ahead of the storm fill bath tubs with water or buy some sturdy BPA free water containers, and buy a good gravity fed water filter like Berkey or Alexapure. Well worth it in storm prone areas!
Their Beef Stew isn’t bad either. Thanks for sharing
I'm torn between this and MREs. MH uses 8-16 oz of water per package? In a shtf situation I'd be trying to conserve as much water as possible. The MRE heater uses only an ounce or 2 of water. Problem with MREs is the lower 3-5 yr shelf life. I did a taste comparison between the and I found the MRE superior in taste.
I had to conclude that my MH had gone off after 4yrs. Inedible.
I love their biscuits and gravy. I also bought Auguston Farms? 30 day supply for 1 person for $99 but haven't tasted it, has anyone. It comes in a 6 gallon bucket.
It's at SAMs Club
Did he just serve the kids with the same sppon that he was eating with??? Dude !
Buy Biscuits and Gravy! Thanks
Great video. Love you put your kids in the video honest opinions.
Breakfast skillet! Outstanding!
Great test you guys. Greetings from Andreas on Off Grid Sweden
Cool Video., Thanks for the info.
check out a product called Harvest right its a home freeze dry unit I LOVE mine . I can freeze dry my own meals. It does cost a lot but what you can do with it is amazing. My family love the fruits
+Seljane Reilly yeh have seen them. Would love to pick up one soon.
Looks like the dog gives her/his seal of approval!
Stroganoff is literally my favorite
Where were you when I was a young squady and had to carry all my gear?
I have priced and checked the content of some of their products and don't know if they have low-sodium, low-carb, etc. varieties but even in a bug out scenario, not everyone will be able to eat the same.
Literally on a campout right now eating some :)
I've never tried the biscuits and gravy but the beef stroganoff is one of my favorites. I can't believe you didn't like it that much. I've tried around 10 different meals from mountain house and the only ones that went that great to me are the ones with eggs.
+sandman x that biscuit and gravy pack was the bomb!
Good to know. WTG Mountain House.
I've tried Mountain House, Wise and Legacy. Mountain House was my favorite. But i've only had biscuits and gravy.
BUG OUT BAG TIME=GREAT VIDEO
I want your puppy!
How many calories per meal?
I love Mountain House! Breakfast Hash, Chili Mac, and Chicken Fajita Bowl.
Pot Noodle......that is all.....;)
It's like having a future glimpse! I want to see how my (almost 2) son reacts to the Mountain House freeze dried food.
Thanks for the video!
Great video! My only issue with MH and others is the salt content. MH can also be a bit too spicy hot for me (chili!). I still keep some around. :)
What bag are you using in the video for you BOB? Thanks!
+Andrew Kenseth Eberlestock Backpack: amzn.to/1nhBxWg
Thanks so much for this video! I started using mountain house for my camping trips and now including them in my food storage!
I have 90 days mountain house food storage. Tested all flavours of before ordering. Great food
great stuff to have and easy to fix. Instant coffee falls into this catagory. I have been drinking it for a month, and it passes my test. Nescafe dark!
+Andrew Young yeh, i can handle instant coffee. not my first choice, but definitely not bad.
but not having coffee...can't do that. And I've looked into beans, and roasters and grinders...buy a few jars and be done.😂😂
A powdered creamer is good to keep on hand too. I am a tea drinker and every once in awhile put some "coffee mate" into it just to get accustomed to it. My mom and boyfriend keep the individual packets of instant coffee on hand for the same reason. Just to not have to stand in an hour line at the grocery store the day before a snow storm is due makes it worth it . TFS your ideas and ADORABLE kids with us :-)
They lost me at 250 bucks that has to be 6 cases of canned chef boyardee spaghetti and meatballs.
+snipervictim oh, sorry i didn't clarify that. there's quite a variety in the supply kit.
ahh ok
Not enough uk guys doing this. Nice video
+Baron Sprout thnx!
I'd love to see a taste test of Honeyville freeze dried.
+golf-n-guns gonna have to check them out.
You did a good job on the video :)
+Brenden Hickman thnx!
Are you thinking of purchasing a home freeze dryer in the future?
+ModernReformer bought one Thursday. Arrives in about 1 week. Can't wait! You?
I would love to and I've convinced my wife on the need for one, but I'm on a pretty limited budget for preps right now. We have a dehydrator we've used for years and when I have the funds I'm looking at that solar generator you did a review on as a higher priority. The Harvest Right line of freeze dryers looks very impressive though.
+ModernReformer it does look impressive. I have a dehydrator but haven't used it yet (going to soon). I'll start some videos probably by the end of the month on the freeze dryer.
didnt see the link to down load the list of ratings
+Daniel Hale sorry about that...forgot to put those in. just added them.
Awesome stuff, just got a chance to go over the taste ratings. I have been buying Patriot pantry and its not really for backpacking, due to the preparing instructions. I have tried mountain house and patriot, at the same time, its just that patriot pantry needs 4cups of water and it really doesn't work that well leaving it in the pouch. I do have to say that patriot Pantry does taste better than all the others but mountain house is a close second. when backing its mountain house if that's what I plan to eat. Thank You
Yet another reason to look forward to Fridays. Thanks for the video man
+Julius Johnson thanks for the kind words! really glad you enjoy them.
theres so much packaging and garbage thats produced from this
+JogBird they also have #10 cans. I might do a video about that in the future...helps cut down the waste.
JogBird in SHTF, packaging and garbage will probably be the least of our worries, lol.
Daisy exactly. When shtf you're not going to worry about separating the recyclables and what you daily carbon footprint looks like.
Unicorn Hunter yes, too true! I'm always amazed at how many people think that folks will be concerned about carbon footprint when all has gone to hell.
Daisy Yep, if I'm bugging in my priorities are pretty much going to be water, food, waste management (not talking packaging here), sterilization and fitness if I can afford the calories.
