Signal Report: Delhi Ham Radio VHF Net

  • The world's most "hated and loved" Baofeng UV5R handy talkie has been put on a rigorous test by setting its RF power to 2-watt only just for prolonging its juice and most importantly, under Delhi - NCR's harsh heatwave climatic condition. On a single charge I was able to prolong the battery power for more than four days with daily checking into the Delhi VHF Net including brief ragchew. The UV5R has a maximum 4-watts of RF power. After connecting a homebrewed vertical dipole this cheap tiny radio has been favourably resonating signals thus, causing many ham owners of high-end rigs to blush:) Unlike in the US, this UV5R handy talkie does not have any issues with regards to spurious emissions and harmonics in India including several other countries globally. However, I am not sure if all the UV5R handy talkies performs like a charm as the one shown in the video since there are several vendors in that dragon country (China) manufacturing identical counterfeit HTs under the same brand - Baofeng, which is a real challenge to differentiate unless it is put on a real life test performance.
    Cheers!

Hi there, thank you for your query. It is a Vertical Dipole VHF antenna which I built with items that were mostly available in my house.
Following are the items used for this antenna:
      1) Two pieces of 19.35 inch electrical wire 8 gauge
      2) Two Grey plastic tubes with entire length slit from a children's animal description calendar
      3) End caps of the calendar slit tubes
      4) Piece of 1/2 inch PVC pipe
      5) Half inch PVC pipe 15cinch long
      6) Piece of wood to act as a wall bracket
The two pieces of 19.35 inch electrical wires are housed inside the Grey plastic tubes. Scrap off the end wires and use Lugs to connect it to the antenna feeder wire. Make five turns of the antenna wire of around seven inch diameter and tie is with a zip tie which will work as a BalUn (balance unbalance)
Pls note that the braid side of the antenna wire should be facing towards the bottom while the sleeve wire should be pointing vertically towards the sky.
Do watch again and freeze the video at 04:47 and 05:19 to get an idea how the antenna has been made like alphabe 'T' to hold it at the ventilator and also the BalUn. After completing it the entire PVC pipe including the Lugs have been weather proofed by applying hot glue gun
The other end of antenna feeder wire has been intentionally been connected to a BNC connector. Ensure that the UV5R has a SMA to BNC adapter and you are good to go. Personally, I prefer BNC since it is light weight when compared to the SO239 varieties as it reduces the strain and torgue pressure on the HT's internal circuitry
Here is a caveat: I have no means to measure the SWR but with trial and error adjusting the distance between the braid and sleeved antenna wires helped me to find a sweet spot when I got encouraging signal report from other hams
Trust this helps and hope you are able to replicate this Vertical Dipole homebrewed antenna. Additionally, do read in the description section of the video too
Further, this same Vertical dipole antenna can be made to use as a high-beam Yagi antenna by adding reflectors and director
      Cheers!

First of all to operate transceivers one has to have a licence from WPC, ministry of communication, Govt of India.
To be in this hobby and to own wireless transceivers the cost can vary from a few thousands to lakhs and crore. In fact, the sky is the limit
