Oh no! It looks bad to me. SO many forgeries! Being a Boer myself, :) I really want to start with a collection of the "old" South African states and provinces. :) Thanks, it was very interesting!
Darn forgeries! I fell for them myself as a collector, got myself very excited just to be let down. Boo!
Interesting and instructive myth! Thanks!
Thanks!
Very Interesting!!
Thanks for this very useful post, Andrew, though it didn't exactly cheer me up as I now suspect nearly all of my 15 Transvaal eagle/shield stamps are fakes. I'm not sure about my £5 as I didn't really understand what you said about how to check the perfs (I'm sure that's me being dim). Oh well, they seemed too good to be true. All the best, Ray
Really nice, never seen the 5 Pounds before. I have 3 stamps from the first set but I don´t know if they are genuine. You showed so many forgeries that I´m not overoptimistic. Without proper literature it is impossible to collect Transvaal. I do not have anything to look at. Michel catalogues are not good for most British areas except the UK specialized catalogue. Is there a good book for these South African old stamps what you can recommend? The later sets are not that complicated to get but I was not aware that there are also forgeries for the cheap issues. I think this is something for my next life. Like Helgoland, you can find more forgeries than genuine stamps.😂
Hi Oliver.Check out transvaalstudycircle.org and see what info they have, it's a fascinating area but like you say, filled with fakes! The 1900 £5 green with "V.R.I." overprint which we sold last year took over 3 years for us to obtain a certificate as the individual perforation combs have to be carefully identified but the history of Transvaal is great, the whole Boer expansion a study in human resilience, their resistance against the British, etc... well worth a try!
Thank you. A very interesting review of the early Transvaal issues. The KEVII £5.00 is a truly beautiful stamp but as you imply well-beyond most collector’s budget. Incidentally, what brand and type of stamp tweezers are you using? They look handier than my ‘shovels’!
Hi Phil. Contact Vincent through stamp@sandafayre.com and I'm sure he'll send you a pair.
