  • The Gold Sparkle L-2 was introduced in late 1929 and was produced for only about a year and a half. It's a rare and legendary vintage flat-top model and is one of Gibson's most interesting guitars to study.

Gary again from England. I’m going through all your posts. They are thoroughly enjoyable, perfectly paced, and perfectly user friendly in terms of information! You are doing a great service to the vintage guitar community. (You’re to guitar what agadmator is to chess....... he’s created a wonderful community through his passion and manner and knowledge, and effort over the past few years).
Keep it up Mark! Because of your manner and obvious integrity I will be in touch with you at the shop hoping to do some business sometime!

The Jester inlay comes from an endearing time in Gibson’s history when Orville Gibson dressed like a Jester...there are pictures of him dressed this way online. There’s your answer.

Beautiful guitar. I would love a video on optimum neck angle, saddle height and how it changes how the top reacts and changes the feel. Or this ideas of the a Golden Ratio. Gibson all over the board through the years. It’s what makes Gibsons infuriating but also charming in there own way. They seemed to be always winging it. Makes no sense -what was going on? God love’ em.
Really enjoying these videos. This has been needed and you are filling this niche beautifully. 🙏
My Kel has that famous bulge behind the bridge, then the slight dive around sound hole. I was worried at first but it hasn’t worsened in the 15 years I’ve owned it. Going to try the gypsy jazz daddarios and John Pearse suggestions.

The headstock inlay looks like a tulip to me. Maybe nick lucas tiptoe through the tulips had something to do with that, a target market type thing.

i like the idea of calling the inlay "the jester" it does look like the silhouette of a jester. is there info about how certain inlays / dot marker became so widely used, some of the designs i see no reason for their popularity and i wonder why some that i find really boring have become so widespread, and others that work well (my fav is the advanced jumbo bracketed diamonds / diamonds and arrows) hardly ever get copied.
interesting take on strings too, there is a lot of mythology about "the best strings" and my advice is always, try everything, but to swap out the trebles from a set is a new idea to me, my 66 J45 feels really, really tight even with 12-54 and literally hurts to play, so i'm going for 10-52's next time round, which i think is what i used when i first got it in the 70's. i've been using 12-54 and got used to them, except on the j45, but maybe i need to experiment with the combinations too!

You should write a book about Gibson flattops
No one has written anything that has the details you bring to your videos

@@TheFolkwayMusic Mark- i am currently building four Gibson inspired acoustics. I have been thinking about the pros and cons of tucking or not tucking the braces that most builders feel necessary these days. I personally don't worry about untucked braces coming loose with Titebond, which I use. I have tucked braces for my builds so far but would really like to try feathering as earlier Gibsons had. Do you have a strong opinion, and would you have time to talk about this one day?

Mark, Can you please make a video explaining the difference between banner j45s vs post banner, and 1950-54s. In 55 when the straight bracing appears its a pretty clear reason to explain the difference in the tone but I dont really understand why I hear significant differences between 1942 to 54 other than the impact of neck mass. Thank you for sharing your wisdom

Mark, these are excellent insights. I've been playing since 1961, sans this kind of guidance. --What would you recommend for a maple Guild F30 that sounds ? It handles wonderfully for me (as compared to a very rich Martin HD28, that I handle poorly). I had it set up and it plays true and clean but there is an annoying "clang" in the strings. without other ideas, I will try at least the strings you mentioned here. But maybe you have found how to warm up, or remove the clang, on a guitar like mine?

Joe - Without assessing your guitar in person there's not much to offer, unfortunately. You're best bet is to bring it to a skilled repair person for an evaluation.
