While you’re at this point, fill the cabin with smoke, pressurise it and check for rust around the front & rear screens. The water drain points weren’t great on these & a common for needing attention. Have seen some nightmares uncovered here in Perth, Western Australia when guys have done all the other repairs & not pulled the screens to check. You’re down this far, just take it a little further & go the whole hog.
@@ableusermcz the vehicle in question came from a small town on the coast of Japan. When the young bloke that bought it picked it up from the quarantine yard it looked like it had recently been painted. Less than 3 months into ownership while getting ready for compliance and registration inspections they put it on a lift & the body filler cracked at the top of the windscreen and rear window seals. When they pressurised the cabin after filling with fog it escaped around most of the front & rear windows. They popped both screens out to find a nightmare. The end result after media blasting the entire car back to metal: new windscreen frame, new roof skin, new upper firewall, 1 new A pillar, front upper chassis rails, strut towers, new rear parcel shelf & rear window frame. The underside wasn’t much better. New floor pans, rear subframe, boot floor & 2 rear quarters. In the end the total cost after the initial $15k purchase ended up being close to $80k. The car is now 100% bog & rust free with factory colour reapplied & the complete interior & driveline brought back to factory spec. It’s getting real hard to get anything other than stock relicensed here unless the vehicle gets engineer approval documents.
@@pratt1bp I will see if I can find someone who can do this cabin smoke stuff near me on my S13, I have paid to have the trunk rust fixed and had the engine bay resprayed and battery tray removed (common rust spot) but finding people in South Florida who will even touch a rusty car is extremely rare, it's a dying art you dudes in Australia are keeping alive, respect. @@Nick._.kucera_ Did you not watch the video or.....? the underbody was very, VERY obviously covered up and a solid 2 minute inspection would've caught that lol, same with the jank strut tower patch panels.
If you have big balls and finesse you can unpick bulk spotwelds with just a drill, partial pilot hole then something around same size as the spot, helps if you have a brass block for the occasional blow through
OMG! that ending was adorable... glad youre going the extra mile on the project, def worth it in the long run. im sure once you have that RB30 running itll be a keeper. plus that engine bay is going to look fantastic all fresh and repainted!
Like I commented in the last video. Japanese cars surface rust means what's under is rusty. So if there's a touch of rust on parts of the frame. There's usually rot hidden behind it. Kalvin mali's videos show it in depth with his r32.
Man I hope Spoon is paid well enough to never have to think about leaving. You see other youtubers have "assistants" and they never last. Jimmy and Spoon need to stay together. Id love to see them work on a car for spoon too
Jimmy of The Oaks finally hit 500k!! Let's keep this awesome channel growing Gang! Hit that like button! This is the best channel on UA-cam and is so slept on.
I honestly wouldn't have cut anything apart until I had the new parts in hand. Also important to take some X measurements to locate the strut towers and rad support. Not all new parts are 100% to the original and you can get burned when lining stuff up. Tram gauge would be best but yolo. Spoon and Brian will get you through it.
I was anxiously waiting for this video to come. Bc I have to do this same thing to one of my projects and I'm dreading it. But yall made it look easy enough. Can't wait for the install video!!!
Yo Jimmy have you noticed that before u got the 964 NOBODY was doing anything or saying anything about Porsche's all and now all of a sudden after u got yours everyone else has to talk about or get one just to copy you homie ! Dustin Williams just got a 911 SC and its probably all because of you man !
A lot of great info. Thank you guys for teaching people how to do this. Wild how much these old rust buckets cost, but with a little pain these cars will last a lot longer. You rock!
You should try a die grinder with a carbide bur. I would recommend a quality double cut oval or egg shaped bur. The burs from McMaster Carr are a good mix of price to performance. With a good powerful die grinder and a little bit of practice you can be cutting out spot welds in 3 to 4 seconds. A low degree wedge started on one end to apply a little pressure, and then just rip through the top layer. Once you have cut through the top layer the wedge will pop the top panel for you, move the wedge and cut the next one. Fast and easy once you get the hang of it. Good luck!

Just a quick bit of advise when you do add the seam sealer dont block the drains on the strut towers in the wheel well. If you do then water gets trapped and rusts inside out
Jimmy I know you’ve got connections. But LNC in California Vladimir Solo has UA-cam channel called LNC Collision it’s family ran. He uses that saying: What happened; nothing happened with final repairs are complete.👍
I know the rust sucks donkey balls, but I'm enjoying watching the process. This is something a lot of carguys go through (probably not on a Skyline, but maybe on a shitty old volkswagen) and the way you guys explain it, makes it a lot less scary! Great work.
