I randomly saw them open for Greg Kihn in Berkeley in 1978. Kihn was drunk and awful. The Knack rocked the night! On Monday in downtown SF (I worked for my Dad,) I was telling him about them, and BAM! There was lead singer, Doug Fieger, and the bass guy Prescott walking down Market Street outside our office! I ran outside and said loudly THE KNACK! lol.. they turned around and couldn't believe anyone knew them. They hadn't really come out with any songs yet I think. They came in and talked with my Dad and me. Gave me a pin/button that was black and said "Get The Knack," in pink writing. I'll never forget it. So cool.
Literally dropped what I was doing to watch this. Released a month before I turned 18, right outta High School, when this song hit. BIG. It was when Punk was morphing into New Wave. Such a catchy song. Pure Power Pop Rock. Thanks for doing this.
Just some side notes, Sharona was the lead singer's, Doug Feiger, old girlfriend from high school..she's now a real estate agent in California. He's from my home state of Michigan. Doug passed away from a brain tumor in 2010. Also, his brother is the controversial attorney, Geoff Feiger, who represented Jack 'Dr Death' Kevorkian.
Such a massive hit…and still sounds good more than 40 years later. My dad actually had the 8 track of this and played it all the time in our van when I was a kid.
There are some rock songs that just have that swagger, that attitude, the badness that embodies rock'n'roll. This is one of them, still holds up decades later. Not complex, but it rocks. Attitude!
Truth. This guitar solo is legendary. (Too bad he played the short version) Along with the song. It is the perfect pop masterpiece by a band at their tightest.
Berton was around before the Knack, I agree loved this leadwork since it came out. Quite skilled soloing in the long version for sure. I still have the CD.
When I saw this I kinda laughed a little. Brings back memories and how popular it was back in the day. Parents tapping their feet to it lol. Never listening to the words.
I was 15 and about to go into the 10th grade when this song came out… And you’re 100% right about it being a high school song… This was everywhere in mid to late 1979
This song was so huge when it was released and hit the airwaves. Precursor to new wave but one of the "new wave " of rock at the end of the classic rock era and the beginning of the new rock era
This takes me back to my bowling league years in the 80's. Love this song it was played all the time while we were bowling. Great memories for sure 👌 ❤
No bout a doubt it my friend, "Good Girls Don't" is a cool jam! However, a few lyrics in that song wouldn't fly today with all the sensitive silly-Sally's we have now in society. I'm just saying........ ++Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend++ 🤘😜🤘
You probably heard it both on the radio and in movies (and probably also in shops, bars etc). It was a huge hit when it was released and it became a classic.
Doug Fieger would absolutely love your reaction video if he was still with us. He passes maybe 10 or so years ago. I spent many hours with him at a few Stamos parties, I told him I saw him at the LA Forum with the black & white outfits here and all white stage lights…what a great show.
I was in college when the Knack put this out. Cover bands would play it and the floor was packed! This sound was called New Wave that evolved from punk. It's still rock n roll to me! 😅
Get the Knack was the first album I ever brought myself with my own money. I was 11 or 12 years old and it was $12.99 😂 Oh Tara is my favourite song off this album 💜🫶🏻🇦🇺
One of those songs I wrote off as a bit silly when I was younger but on repeat listens, knowing more about music, it bangs! '78-80 was an interesting moment in popular rock music. My mind goes from this to The Cars, so many good songs from those guys in this period! From 1977, Television's Marquee Moon album is a landmark in this general style too.
Another huge radio hit , driving drums and bass, great vocals and i agree that that lead singer looks like a very young Pete Townsand from The Who . Their energy was wild and I personally loved them :)
Bought the vinyl album back in the day. I may still have it in the closet. I could never figure out what they were talking about. 🤪 Thanks for your reaction.
Love your reactions and how much of each song you pay attention to. As someone else mentioned, you MUST listen to the guitar solo in the longer version. IMO one of the beat guitar solos of all time.
You have to listen to the longer version. I mean, you have to make an exception and listen again with the extended guitar solo because that solo is literally legendary. It's not just a little extra... it's monumental!
@@darbeerathbun Oh, yeah! Reminds me of some of the school boy tendencies we had sweatin' all the hot chicks in school we hoped to get with at the house party's on the weekend or under the gym & football field bleachers. There's way too many sensitive silly-Sally's today who would immediately being offered by some of the lyrics in the song instead of just enjoying the energy vibe in the tune. Just saying..... ++Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend++ 🤘😜🤘
This song is being used prominently in a recent TV commercial, probably where you heard it. In '79/'80 This song was every day radio play, and was a STAPLE for every aspiring garage band. The song is musically accessible to aspiring musicians of of all skill levels, simple, but hits hard with a great beat and catchy hook. It was over played so much that by '82 everyone was burned out with it LOL. The song was inspired by his girlfriend and written in 15 minutes, recorded in one take and mixed 15 minutes after that. Later, the final mix of the original recording for the album added the backing vocals, and a shortened version trimmed for the single. Pretty incredible!
I only knew this song because of the REAL MTV, ya know, the channel that actually played videos!!!! Otherwise I was playing Jethro Tull, ELP, Yes, etc. This was just fun.
I was hoping this version didn't have the edited guitar solo, but it does. Definitely recommend checking out the album version with the longer solo. Lead guitarist Berton Averre's playing always reminded me of The Car's guitarist Elliot Easton, because they both craft such perfect sounding solos that become an integral part of each song.
You should check out the '70's band TAVARES, especially their hit "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel". They also did a great cover of the BeeGee's "More Than a Woman".
I was 10 years old when this hit first dropped and, despite the catchy riff, thought it was a bit too repetitive. Yet somehow I appreciated it more listening to it along with your reaction. Thanks!
Nooo! The version with the chopped off guitar solo. This is one of the greatest guitar solos of all time. The Knack's catalog is all about teen angst and teen sex drive. They're very underrated.
It Was So Good, It Was A Chart Hit Twice Like George Jones,es "He Stopped Lpvin Her Today!" Which Won Country Song Of The Year , Two Straight Years!! ✌🤓

The Romantics ‘What I Like About You’ has the same energy!
Saw them open for Adam Ant in DC in maybe ‘87 or ‘88
Yes!
Exactly what I was thinking!
Oh my God YES!!!!!
Energy of the Kinks! "You Really got Me!"from early 60's!
There's the longer version with an extended guitar solo that is quite good. That's worth adding to your playlist.
Pretty sure that is exactly what he just watched.
@corey6393 ... the full length song is a minute longer.

Im a drummer and you don’t realize how hard this song is until you try to play it. It’s actually difficult! Amazing tune!!
The Knack are actually amazing musicians... all around.. I cover this on bass and it's a workout.

the Sharona this song was written about was very pretty
This song was huge - one of those songs so huge you start to hate on it, then over time come to re-love it.
Ahhhhhh high school memories
The full album version with the guitar solo is worth a re-listen. The guitarist has some real chops. Excellent album all around.
This was used in the soundtrack for the 1994 film “Reality Bites”.
1978! As an aspiring drummer fresh in the game, I loved that year. So much great music.
This entire album rocks, especially the drumming.
Holy crap this brings back memories of roller skating back in the day as a kid.
Great song the who energy reference was perfect! Another song you may like is “Drivers seat” sniff n the tears .. thanks

The scene in "Reality Bites" where this song comes on and the lead actors were dancing to it.
